There is an American tiktoker in Luxembourg that complained last year about the amount of ticket she got for speeding, that it should be illegal as the US do not have that. The amount of back lash she got ... the video was gone within 24h

The US free reffills are actually not free. Restaurants in Germany make most of their money from drinks. And if you don't get that money for the drinks you can't pay your waiters well. So people have to tip for the outcomme of the waiters. What you save on free refills you pay twice at the end with tipping.

I really love it, when Americans complain about having to pay for the public restrooms. They always make it sound as if you only have to do this in Germany.
The first thing I ever spent money on in the UK was for the loo at Victoria Station. For me as a German this was totally normal. But I really liked the coin machine at the entrance. It changed your paper money into coins so you could use the entrance gate. In Germany, if you don't have any coins, you're screwed...

They complain about 50 cents for a public bathroom, but gladly pay the wages of the waiter and call it tipping. The times I actually have to pay for a public restroom in Germany is when I drive on the Autobahn. In all other situations, I will go to a place where I can have a coffee or a beer and enjoy that. Just sitting there and enjoying life for 15-30 minutes.

    -We have "Five Guys";
-Supermarket: after/during the checkout process, I actually put everything back in the shopping cart and drive it to my car where I have my bags or baskets and I pack it up there, unless I only bought 3-4 things ( ..okay, if it rains, I'll pack up in the store)

I don't drive, but I have a shopping trolley to pull behind me I always fill up from the shopping cart. The only time I bag at the till is when I only have a handful things. And even then I feel annoyed by holding up everyone else trying to get it into bags.

Tax included: I love how US Americans tend to say ´it is difficult and complicated to include because of all the different tax stipulations´. And I say, that US Americans have been gaslit into believing this, because the USA is not about consumer rights and safety, but about backing exploitation by companies for profit. This they then call „good“ capitalism and economy.
However, the store owner or any other seller only has to know the tax stipulation for his products in his town/state. Nowadays there is no problem to enter the data into a computer program which helps you create the correct price tag as well as letting the chash register connect the barcode to the correct price and the receipt will can even show the different incl. Taxes, discounts etc.
Excluding taxes is a way to eyewash the customer, make something look cheaper than it is. Same play as with the package sizes and their actual content or getting less for same price.
Just imagine how US American grocery stores would start screaming, if they would have to label every product not only with the price incl. Tax per this package, but also show on the tag how much it is per liter or kilogram, so that the customer is able to compare prices without having to calculate himself the different packaging sizes etc.
Problem with US AMerica and not havin ´Blitzer`but Cops reinforcing speed limits: US America lacks with regard to car registration. To many people driving without plates, false plates, old plates etc. In addition US plates are not very readable in comparison to European plates.

Dwaynes tip about packing your items at the checkout is exactly how to do it and I'm used to do, but there are still people, they are blocking the checkout for a long time, because they begin the packing only after paying at the checkout and not first putting their stuff in the trolley and do it anywhere else.

There are shops in Germany where only net prices (i.e. those without tax) are available. But they are not for “normal” customers, but only for business people and dealers. You can only get bulk packs there. These stores are called METRO or SB-Union.

About the taxes and paying different prices. This is pretty standard in Europe as a continent. Just go for fuel. Or in Europe, go just over the border. Prices in the same store can very much be different. Even in the same country. But that is not the core issue. They still know what you need to pay when you checkout. So they KNOW what the price is including taxes. There are computers who can do this for you. I have done price calculations manually back in the day. And that was "How much should I charge". SO you have the price you buy it for, you add your profit, you add the taxes. Done.
The real reason is that way people have the idea to pay less. The same reason we see prices of 9.99 instead of 10.00

The respective sales taxes are usually shown on the purchase receipt.
Free drinks are usually only available at special events. *Included in the entrance fee.
I recently celebrated my birthday at a restaurant and the drinks were charged per opened bottle.
The management also reminded me to bring Tupperware/food boxes with me as a precaution for leftovers at the buffet and I also received the last opened bottles. Everything was paid for and otherwise would have had to be thrown away.

About those "Blitzers" or speed cameras: I wonder how well they would work with the many different and often very "fancy" car registration plates in the US. In Europe there is more or less a common standard when it comes to registration plates. Even though each country has its own system (of letters and numbers) the font is always very straightforward and machine-readable. Most countries in Europe use a special euro plate font (Din 1451), esp. developed for number plates, and according to Wikipedia varieties of this special font are also used in other parts of the world, apparently even in Cuba and many African or South American countries.

A camera lens doesn't care what an object looks like. Does it make a difference from continent to continent when you take photos? PC technology also helps with digitalization in recognition.
Such a trailer does nothing else - it measures the speed and photographs the license plate. No matter what the part looks like. It is clear that you cannot see license plates if you have “tampered” with them or are sitting in a place where you cannot see them. It's like holding a black bar in front of a person's face.
There are also suppliers who offer or prepare this trailer for the US market! Don't worry, it works there too... Only if you want it and can finance it...
As far as vanadilization is concerned - sensors, live images and alarms... The rest would then have to regulate the punishment for damaging "state property". Is it lax in the USA?

Ikea has free refills, because their restaurants are only for the convenience of the customers, not to make money. So Ikea don't bother with the costs of refills and don't want the costumers to go to the cashier for an extra softdrink, because this would need more cashiers (even more costs).

There used to be free refills in some branches of McDonalds. Afaik mainly ones not owned by local franchise holders, but directly by McDonalds Germany. But have not seen that in ages. Burger King also sometimes technically has that. They have a Soft Drink Machine in the Restaurant and when you buy a Menu you just get an empty paper cup and fill it as you wish.
There used to be "flatrate parties" in some clubs. You pay once and can drink as much alcohol as you want. But that has been banned for ages now... You can imagine why 😀

I think the US only shows net prices because the tax rate changes every 500 meters. Now, I can understand you don't want that little corner on a print magazine that gives prices in 10 countries to become a folding thing covering every little village... but supermarkets printing stickers? Restaurants? Amusement parks? How often do *those* change jurisdiction? That's just stupid.

Hi Dwayne, same here in DE as in UK: prices usually include everything, and refillable drinks are an exception by the same logic, stated otherwise.
And, about the packing in shops.. Here the same as in UK (but may be a bit faster here..). About 'blitzer', Blitz - the German word for a light flash, Blitzer is just the plural of this, this is not just a few coins, you may loose your driving license after a few times.

Well , if you are only slightly faster its not that expensive but the fine will go up every 5 - 10kmh and will be combined with a temporarily removal of your driver License if you are way to fast or earlier if they catch you twice in 26 weeks

Without people needed to register their place of living it would be very difficult to send the ticket. Or they would need to use the tax office information.
There are cars controlling the flowing traffic on the Autobahn, but they generally drive and measure and film cars which are noticeable. They are lead away from the highway and stopped then to do the ticket.

I always wonder why some people are complaining about paying for public restrooms... I don't care if I have to pay, the money is used for cleaning and maintaining these restrooms... Free restrooms are (in my experience) almost always run down and maintained once a month... Using free restrooms in stores/restaurants is always a good thing for some people...
I've been to a Subway restaurant for a few times in Leipzig, Germany. (the one in the main train station) - they stopped their "free refill" system because sometimes people walk in with their 0.5l cup, fill it up and walk back out. I totaly understand this decision...
In Germany there sometimes are cops at the "Autobahn" when there are distance checks or traffic safety checks... Otherwise there are traffic cameras even at the Autobahn, because it's more efficient - you can get 200 speeders when there's no cop chasing down everyone individualy. The problem about speed cameras in the US is that there are states where no license plate in the front is needed... In Germany it's neccesary to have license plates in the front and back.

Hi Dwayne. "Blitzers", from the German word for flash. The flash you see when the radar is working.
I think the US is the exception. Anywhere else you pay what you see on the price tag. The sales taxes are always included. And there are only three sales taxes: for example stamps don't have taxes included. Most foods are 7% and the rest 19%. It doesn't vary from state to state.

In germany they need a picture of the speed-offender (The Driver is fined not the owner, except the owner doesn't tell them who was the driver, then he has to pay). Before digital times they made the Black&White pictures with film-cameras and a flash (Blitz in German) was needed for the correct exposure. Therefore you see the Blitz when they get you speeding and therefore Blitzer.

Regarding the restroom topic: I rather pay a small amount for using a restroom to have a clean place. Public restrooms e.g. in stations used to be free many years ago. Using them you found extremely dirty and smelly places and drug addicts getting their next shot... This changed after they started to charge small fees and you have to pass a kind of barrier. On motorway rest stops you pay too but often get a token for the amount you paid which you can use to purchase something in the store

9:00 Well ... as a german, living in germany ....... well.
I have to structure my goods on the cashiers line in such a way, that i can pack it up most optimal in my trolley when i'm at the cash register...
You see, one _can_ manage to pull a full trolly of groceries and goods - just barely fast enough for german aldi cashiers - trough the cash register line, without accidents and losses.... But just BARELY!
You you actually have to plan how to stuff your good back into the trolly as fast, efficient and safe as possible .. because... Heck your time at the register is very short....
One can compare it to a pit stop in a Formula 1 race. ;)

Speed cameras instead of chasing down people and causing danger on streets sounds like a good idea, but there is an another problem, to have a license plate at the front of the car seems not to be mandatory there and taking a photo from the back, where the plate is, you wouldn't be able to capture the face of the driver for that. So, it would be necessary to do more than one changes and some people or authorities are struggling to change anything or don't like changes at all.

    - Adding the sales tax is not common sense, it's common law in the EU :)
    - Not giving away products the company has paid for, IS common sense however. Free refills are a terrible business decision and only make sense if you compensate for the loss elsewhere. At the end of the day, you paid for your refills.
    - I lived in the Denton/Fort Worth area in Texas for four years, visited Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, and Arizona and didn't see a single speed camera. I did see hundreds of state troopers, though, sitting along the interstates waiting for prey. The only advantage I see is that locals can't get used to the speed cameras, slow down for the cameras, just to speed up again. In the US, you really never know where the cops are hiding at any given time of the day.
    - You don't pay to use a bathroom in Germany. You pay your little part to keep the thing clean. Since you don't want to do it yourself, someone needs to be hired to clean up after you. And this person needs to be paid a liveable wage. As soon as we think things through, they don't seem that scary anymore, do they? :)

in the USA the speed is not estimated, the police have a radar gun to monitor the speed and to calm the lady down these are also available in Germany. as a resident of Munich I can say that there are also public restrooms but they are so dirty that you could vomit in addition to your "business", I prefer to pay 1€ before I catch any diseases. In restaurants or shops you can also have the tax printed out separately, but this is usually only used for business meals or for purchases that are taken abroad, at the border you can then have the VAT refunded, but firstly this is not applicable to foodstuffs and secondly it is no longer necessary within the EU as you no longer have to pay import duties.

For the "free refill" after all i heared meanwhile all you really get for free is "tab water" and no Coke, beer, whisky or whatever else you imagine. And i also heared that tab water in the US is often really horrible. I remember one video from Radical Living or Nalf where the german guy gives Nalf some wather and said its tab water and Nalf spits it out and ask if he wants to poion him.
So not really sure about that whole "free refill" thing, seems more like a card that americans just pull out to make at least something look better in their country.
Oh .. maybe if the Coke is normally already 80% ice/water and only 20% Coke, then you can also get some refills of that .. because with just one glass you only get 1/5th of what you paid for.

Or was it the Deposit for Bottles/cans? - These are often not included in the price because you get it back when returning the empty bottle.

I don't think so, because in 1986 there wasn't a deposit-system like nowadays in Germany. If I'm not wrong, the ordinance for that was comfirmed at 1998 and not before.

In Germany there are McDonald's and Bürger King restaurants where you can get refills for free, but not every restaurant of both offers it. In the USA, this is certainly one of the many reasons why people there are so fat.

This is what I praise about Austria:
    - the uniform toilet allowance is 50 cents; Except in big cities, where it's usually free in the big shopping centers
    - Most restaurants or food joints rely on drinking as their source of income; That's why it will never happen (unless it's American companies like Five Guys)
    - the new speed cameras (especially on the highway) are sometimes difficult to see and measure extremely accurately; because they use laser technology
    - most mobile speed cameras are announced on the radio wherever they can currently be found (it's not really legal, but it's common practice); usually every 15-30 minutes depending on the radio station (usually after the news)

I'm 55 and I only ever paid for the toilet in a motorway station at the Autobahn.

    • @DSP16569
      @DSP16569 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

And even at the Autobahn there are rest places (the ones without a gas station but a toilet) where you can do your business for free (ok they sometimes cost you your health because they are often dirty as hell).
Every bigger Restaurant (even Fast food restaurants) have a toilet where you do not need to pay (but you should at least invest in a coffee or a Hamburger).

Is there any other country in the world, that charges taxes (for teh consumer) on the prices at the check out?
Sometimes in US restaurant chains, you get a free refill.

"Not free to pee" is different here and there in Germany. I work on a big hardware store and in our store you can go to the toilet for free. But here comes the point. The toiletes sometimes look like shit

Sorry, but seltsam is not seldom but weird or strange. its a false friend word 😅 regarding not-included tax in price-tags: its simply prohibited by law to expect more money than written on it. An exception would only be markets where no end-users may buy, like the Metro.

I will never understand these complaints about paying for cleaned public Toilet or the tap water in a restaurant. You saved enough money on free refill and not payed waiters/waitresses and free shopping bags.

Don't forget you're talking about Americans. What do you think, how long will a speed camera survive in the US before it gets torn down by a lunatic? 1 day, 1 week?
P.S.: We call speed cameras Blitzer. A literal translation would be "Flashers".

It doesn't fit 100% to the topic, but somehow it also does, and since i just posted this collection in another thread, i also leave it hear for all the people who still have no clue about the real situation in the US. After that you will maybe understand why a lot people call the US "the richest third world country on the planet". And hell, even most third world countrys don't look lke that anymore these days.
