In this video I discuss the FOUR most important steps one would need to take in order to start writing their FIRST fanfic as well as how to find their niche audience and gain more readers! AO3 and Tumblr are the platforms I mainly use but you can also write fanfiction on Fanfiction.net, Wattpad, and many other platforms.

omg this came on my home page and you give really good advice for beginners! i've been writing fanfic for 4 years now and have amassed almost 200k reads on my latest fic so far. i personally never thought about people seeking out this sort of content because i began writing fanfic to prove that i could write better fics/explore a niche that the fics i was reading couldn't develop well.
outlining is super important for any kind of writing (fanfic included), so i would suggest new and experienced writers start by identifying the conflict of their story/protagonist and its resolution. this can work for ppl who want to build in-depth outlines (ahem me plotting out my next fic chapter-by-chapter) and ppl who prefer free-writing!
hope this wasn't too info-dumpy; i study creative writing in university (i fell in love with it through writing fanfic and i'm diversifying my work at the moment) so i've learned a lot about writing this past year.

One of my biggest problems is that I'm a people-pleaser. I love what I write, but after I finish a chapter, I get so self-conscious that I want to rewrite the whole thing to please others despite the nice comments I get. :(

I've written fics before, though with barely any traction I eventually lose interest and discontinue them. Your advice is things I know already but your Vibe is VIBING, love the feels
I do truly try to bring the vibe! It’s all fun and creativity is beautiful! Even I don’t feel like this all the time but I want to motivate everyone to just write. You literally never know how your story will affect someone into creating their own or even just make their day better!
Now the fact that you called my voice amazing is so surreal but I’m not even gonna get into that 😂

Some of my best characters were made after I wrote down a 'personal fic', one I didn't intend to show to anyone, then looked back on it and asked 'what would I need to change to make me willing to share this?'. I feel like the 'just write stuff down' and 'have fun' aspects are easier when you're only writing for *you*, and editing something is easier than editing nothing. For perfectionists who are too worried what people will think, starting with something that's just pure self-indulgence can get you past the 'its not good enough' concerns and get something written down to start with.

Glad to be the one to push you in the right direction! The key is to set aside a block of time (maybe 30 minutes to an hour every day) for your brainstorming and writing phases. This way you'll have the time to get it started. Go write that fic and share it with people! 💖
This showed up on my recommended. Never seen a guide for fanfiction specifically before, so I didn't know what to expect.
Pleasantly surprised to see such solid, grounded advice. Very concise, too. Granted, I knew all of this before watching, but going to keep this in mind if I ever find someone who wants to get into writing fanfiction.

I just recommend making the image smaller, that worked for me. The max size for a pfp is 100x100 pixels, I used photoshop to make it that small

(and Gain Readers ASAP) People will just start reading it - nothing to do but wait as it happens, right? Meanwhile
*posts fic* (3 years later) Omg, my first reader! No kudos, no comments, only that one view, and you start to wonder if they just clicked on it by accident and left. Maybe you don't have a reader after all. The online discourse among readers: Oh, yeah, so the best way to only read good fics is to only read new fics with a lot of views. If a fic is old or nobody reads it, you know it's going to be bad.
My question - how can you possibly know a fic is bad if no one ever bothers to read it. The book isn't getting judged by it's cover, here, it's getting judged by ... nothing, by a complete lack of anyone knowing what kind of story it is or whether it's actually good or anything.
Anyway, nothing in this video covers how to gain readers, ASAP or not. Just a thought, but maybe take that off the video title, then make a second video that does cover how to gain readers ASAP. This isn't a bad video at all. It's actually pretty good, but the fact of the matter is something got lost between the title and the video itself, and quite honestly could be added into a new video for twice the video, twice the 'content'

@@aprilsarchives_ And no, I wasn't offended. I wrote out some of what I've seen posted on Tumblr when writers get frustrated that no one is reading their fics. I'm sorry you took that as ME being personally offended.
I mean, how frustrated would you be if people who couldn't be asked to read your fic automatically started going off and painting you as a crappy writer?
Sure, I have a couple one shots with only 2 views, but I know why they have so few views. It's not that I'm bad at writing (as has been suggested to me by the same catty people that only read new fics with lots of views/kudos/comments) - it's that the 'fandom' for the book I based the OC in those fics on is a fandom of one, me. Tbf, I'm actually surprised they have 2 views, and even more surprised that they have any kudos at all.
My original fics and my fanfics for larger fandoms have quite a few more views and kudos. That's where tagging comes into play. Works tagged with popular fandoms or 'original work' tend to get more views, as those tend to be popular for searching. Works tagged with unpopular fandoms (like I did with those 2 one shots, which also happen to be the only two works posted mentioning the original published work of fiction my OC is based on) tend to get no/very few views, since no one is going to look up that tag. The views those get are most likely views from people that are reading them because they subscribed to you personally.
(For writers with very few views, please don't take the lack of views as if it were negative feedback. There's a world of difference between 'this writer is bad' and 'no one has heard of you *yet*'. Keep writing, but also pay close attention to how the most popular fics are tagged and take notes/update your own tags.)
