You're right photon, there is always something to learn from destructive testing. Always seems like those capacitors go first on those boards. So now we know, we just need better capacitors. Repeat the test and move on to the next problem component, and pretty soon we'll have indestructible electronics.

Hey, if you want to see a brush motor arcing you don't need to overvolt a nice motor, you only need the Constellation 867A Hoover vacuum cleaner: it arcs as 2:00 with normal 230V 50Hz.
It's not a problem related to brushes: the springs that pushes the brushes are to weak and unfortunately the motor spin in the direction that the brushes get further from the rotor. If the motor spins in the other direction brushes will stay close to the rotor but probably brushes will consume very fast.

MCU controlled stepper motor? Maybe a bit overkill but precise as hell and geared well quite good on torque. The drivers are not that tricky to construct and program specially with an Arduino and Stepper Shield.. Ive just made a DC based camera slider system and DC motors are a bit of a pain to control accurately.

With a scop that show you a FFT of the frequences, the motor rpm got higher with the time, I figured out that the frequency was about 5000 Hz when it broke. That's about 300.000 rpm (300 krpm). That's pretty much for larger motor like that!

I mean he (you, if you read this) knows all the wiring of input outputs of allmost anything.
