Hey bud, I feel the same way seeing those iconic guitars being sold.
I saw Jeff Beck years ago with SRV. Wow what a show! I've always loved his oxblood les Paul. I hope whoever bought it continues to make music with it. ✌👍🎸

Jeff took his soul when he left us so now we are left with only memories. His guitars have become relics of the past, icons of the future, trinkets for the rich and famous to buy the soul of a person that is no longer there.

A guitar is just a blank piece of canvas. It’s basically nothing until the artist picks it up and creates. Nostalgia gets really expensive.

As a guitar player , Jeff Beck's album 'Wired' on vinyl was something I couldn't stop listening to . . . To this day it's one of my most favorite albums that made me fall in love with jazz rock playing . . . And then I discovered Spyro Gyra and Larry Carlton and others . . . Other guys in bands thought I was weird for liking that stuff . . . But that music just says so much!
And then I saw Steve Vai and Satriani Live with Eric Johnson . . . I never touched my guitars for 2 weeks after seeing that . . . The whole thing makes me rethink the art of guitar playing . . . It was just wow!

    • @badbrad

"Joy of Playing Music" - Heck, he needed to earn a living on the road. • Those instruments were only tools, Brad - The sound and the spirit of those guitars live on in the recordings Jeff left us, thankfully. • People want to be close to their heroes - some will spend inordinate amounts of money to do so. I'm glad that these iconic tools have actually found new homes.

Indian folklore refers to certain possessions becoming' 'Power Objects'. The object can be stored or used in certain ways by either the owner or someone else for some spiritual or emotional purpose. While this may raise a debate about hoarding, it seems that the guitars of our beloved icons can be something deep to a new owner that is not necessarily a desire to imitate the style but to absorb a spiritual benefit. Maybe sorta like Grandma'a cookbook or utensils, family heirlooms bring a connection that cannot be denied. Getting back to Jeff Beck and Iconic guitar players, you are so right that no amount of money or estate ownerships will ever replicate the true Spirit of a Jeff Beck or EVH. Much respect to your homage to the greats.

Very nice tribute. I watched the Cristies live auction and watched as someone bought Jeff's Oxblood les paul for around 1 million dollars. Kinda made me sad but I hope that whatever rich dude bought it, that he plays it and doesn't just stick it in a vault somewhere.😋

Agreed, Beck kept evolving as a player. He really kept thinks interesting throughout for his fans, but it seems also for himself. That was pretty unique to him, never rested on his laurels. Frankly, the guitar didn't matter, Jeff was going to be great on any guitar and yeah he would've tinkered with it and made it 'right' for him.

I saw Jeff Beck's Yardbirds Esquire that he used for Shapes of Things back in 1992. Seymour Duncan got it in a trade for that parts T Caster with the dual humbuckers that he used a lot in the 70s that was at auction. That was Seymour's guitar. I saw it at the LA Guitar Show in 1992 at Ontario Fairgrounds. Seymour had a small booth and was custom winding pickups at the show. It was sitting next to him. I asked about it. He ended up sitting it up on the table so I could study it but I couldn't pick it up or anything. I was tripping out. I remember Seymour also gave him one of his convertible stack amps where it had modular tubes like pulling out a card on the back of a computer. I don't remember seeing him ever use it Live. But the swap was like early 70s for the Esquire. They were long time friends but Beck regretted trading his Yardbirds guitar. Seymour would never get it back to him.

Jeff Beck had no children... he was married twice... first wife was 1963-67, second wife was 2005 to his death 2023. He left his estate to Sandra Beck, his last wife. His will was signed in 2017... his 🎸 🎸 sold off first, sure his hot rod cars 🚗 will go to auction next... making sure he provides for his wife and any charitable giving he may have wanted to do privately.

My friend from UK dated Jeff Beck. She was sad when he passed. She said she would bring him dinner and he would not even take off his guitar! He always had it strapped around his neck, kind of like EVH did. Just a fun fact. RIP Jeff Beck

Jeff was just always improving. From his days with Yardbirds he showed incredible imagination and innovation with such great intros like Over Under Sideways Down and mimicking a Sitar on Heart Full of Soul just to name a few. He got better with age. Iam glad that you mentioned Greeny at least it went to the right hands

I guess these guitars have to go somewhere - I think what makes it sad is that many of the guitars will just go into a collection to be wrapped up, hung up, put in a case on the wall - whatever.... like the Gilmour collection and so on - and they won't be played. The soul of the guitars will fall silent 😞 Hopefully some will be played but it's like everything in life - art, classic cars, antiques.... they all stay while we move on

Can you buy the soul of a guitar legend? Absolutely not. But you sure as hell can buy their guitars for the right amount of money. I really don't think anyone thinks their soul is embedded in those pieces of wood and metal...this is just pure nostalgia and trying to recapture memories. I get it - but I think it is ridiculous to spend that amount of money on beat up guitars just because someone famous played them.
