I never got that she lost her memory. She SAYS that she dosen’’t remember, but I doubt that. To protect herself she says: ”What if he wakes up and belives I did it to hurt him.” It’s a show about lies. Every member of the familiy lies and it is what destroyes them.
She doesn't remember. It's all about roles and the "I'd do anything for my son". Even with everyone having lied at some point. Jacob: Is the big enigma Father: Who despises his father for what he did and who he is, ends up letting crimes and lies pass just to keep his family together. Mother: Is the only character that shows regret and guilt. She can't live with the worry and even goes to check on the other kid's mother. If she did remember she'd try to kill her son again because she can't live with the question of if her son is a murderer or not. A question she'll never have answered. She did lose her memory, the thing is the father I'm pretty sure knows what really happened since he called her many times before the crash. And he doesn't tell her, letting her live without such knowledge. Chris' character is all about that, the same he did with the hitman he's doing it again with her wife. Shutting up and let it all be like before. Which in the end makes him closer to what his father is. (I'm fine with murder and attempted murder if it brings my family together)
Spookylicious The series leaves the burden on him, and her just going along with the lie...again. I thought if they had at least shown someone responsible for Ben’s murder, then the two of them being uncertain, and living in a lie would’ve been more tragic. I don’t mind when an adaptation changes the ending, but this one needed a better one, as it could’ve focused more on how everyone is so hard up for “justice,” that they don’t care about there not being enough evidence, or that there were multiple exculpatory loose ends, that needed tying before a 1st degree murder charge was justified. Regardless of Jacob’s guilt or innocence, the prosecutor just zoned in on one suspect, and disregards even looking at other suspects. This is where the criminal justice system is a failure, and it’s flaws often get innocent people convicted, or there lives ruined even if exonerated. The media’s detestable flip flopping, stating that the boy showed signs of a killer, no matter what one does. Then, as soon as he’s exonerated, they’re at the house yelling to “smile! You deserve it!” As if they care, and hadn’t been feeding off the tragedy, by making a spectacle, and no one truly gets justice in those scenarios.
Yes finally someone said it, along with this, stranger things and a very few series, I'm sick of seeing adults (25-30) acting as teenagers (13 reasons why, riverdale...) but do people seriously send nudes and do BJ at 14 in America cause that sounds weird but I won't not believe if it's true. (I'm 18 and my high school doesn't do these things, at least the majority that I know)
This series shot in my home town of Natick MA. The Ice Cream Parlor and Park Scene sometime in ep 6 I believe. I had met Chris Evans at a Dog park a year earlier. Super down to earth guy we had a great talk. I am visiting the set after school and he instantly recognizes me. We had a great talk about the Patriots and Marvel and other things and he actually stopped people from telling him to get ready to talk to me. Maybe the most genuine person I've ever met. He gave me his representatives contact info. I still have it in my phone to this day.
Thank you so much for sharing this experience... it's wonderful and oddly satisfying to know that the people you admire and love from afar are exactly how you imagine they are.
I was in this show. Did background work in it and it was awesome seeing the process. Very professional and the acting was superb. What an honor, oh yeah this was filming while endgame was out and Jesus Christ it was awesome to see captain America in the flesh while endgame was out. The whole time I wanted to yell out while in the courtroom scenes “hail hydra” awesome
I met Chris on the Set in Natick MA, super down to earth guy I had met him before at a dog park a year prior and when I went up to reintroduce myself he instantly recognized me. Had a great talk and gave me his representatives info. Where did you do the background work at?
>The whole time I wanted to yell out while in the courtroom scenes “hail hydra” awesome good thing you didn't, because hes just a regular guy trying to concentrate on his job. he'd have experienced that as very annoying and cringy.
i also loved the finale. the acting was amazing all the way through, but chris and michelle really did a great job at portraying broken down individuals over all the turmoil their family has been through in the last episode. i also liked that i was blind sided in that i expected answers from the last episode but didn't get any. it's kind of brilliant when writers leave things up to the audience's imagination, i'm sure that isn't easy to accomplish
i didn’t like the finale i like shows with closure and there really isn’t closure and the mom is a turd for trying to kill herself and jacob. like so much for saying even if you did it i will always love you……even if i’m gonna kill u now like bruh.
I also didn’t like the final episode, I would have much rather they stick with the original ending of the book which was basically the same events but with the opposite outcomes (~SPOILER~) the girl from the resort was actually found dead and Jacob passes away immediately from the crash and Laurie is in critical condition
When he said that JK Simmons shows up for some reason my brain had a malfunction and thought of OJ Simpson and I was wondering how is Chris Evans' father a black man.
Jeremy Alexander what are you on about? I was joking, I’m not angry, I just made that comment because in the video Chris made a spoiler warning about JK Simmons being in the show even though he put that fact in the description, defeating the purpose.
@@r0bz1985 Watch reviews after you've seen the thing seems like a waste of time. You watch the reviews to get their opinion on it to see if it might be something for you.
Jeremy Alexander I wouldn’t say it was a shit story myself I loved it tbf thought it depicted what a family would go through superbly although the ending was a bit mad to say the least. But on your point of being superb in a shit story, the first film I would say I didn’t like because of the story would be marriage story but Adam driver and Scarlett johanssons performances were unreal. You might disagree but this is why I love things like this were we can debate stuff like this.
No. It could've been, but there were no moral tales. The homicidal grandfather was protecting family regardless of the truth, the homicidal mother went full evil and was out to kill her son regardless of the truth, yet the only thing that should've mattered was the truth, which we never even got close to. Maybe the point of the show is how evil is all that happens when you act on feelings in the absence of demonstrable truth and how damaging that is to individuals and society, and that learning to accept uncertainty is one of life's hardest lessons; but they never really did anything with that either. In the end, it was just a waste of 8 episodes that ultimately achieved nothing, other than demonstrating that while Andy was worrying about protecting his son from the system, his grandfather and unhinged members of the community rushing to judgement while he pursued the truth, the only thing he really needed to protect him from was the cowardice & insanity of his own mother.
If the show ended with Jacob finally confessing to killing Ben when his mom was grilling him about it in the car.... Then the mom is so shocked and horrified she still runs into the tunnel to kill them both...Show would have been so freakin good. Just saying
This series had me in awe. I was shook. Every episode was so captivating. Cinematography is incredible. Lots of Prisoners vibes. I was blown away with this show. It’s incredible in every way. I hope Chris gets an Emmy nomination because he was brilliant
I really enjoyed the show, but felt the finale was quite predictable and then they threw in that lame ending.. can't help but leave me feeling a little cold. Still quite good tho. Also Chris! In anticipation of Dune coming in December (hopefully) can you please review Villeneuve's Incendies (2010) - would love to hear your thoughts!!
**Spoiler!!! In the book the mother tries to kill her self and Jacob at the end and Jacob dies but the mother lives. Also, in the book he kills the girl in Mexico confirming the mother’s thoughts about her son. *SPOILER*
Predicatable? I mean maybe after they found Hope, but prior to that I really thought he had killed her...I was at least surprised to see she wasn't dead.
how was lame? perhaps you read the book and high expectation, the ending wasn't something extraordinary but i loved it, i thought both of them died at the crash, and thought jacob was spmehow proved to have killed ben given the confidence of the DA
Honestly I loved the show! However on the last episode this is my theory I feel the mum was beyond breaking point and she obviously crashed the car on purpose due to the fact she was so torn and distraught by thinking her son did this. But truly I think the mom didn’t think they would of both survived the crash but when she realised she and her son were still alive she had then panicked and made up a cover story to tell her husband that it was an ‘accident’ so she would not be charged for trying to murder her son. Plus it kinda makes sense why she crashed the car because she had nothing to loose as she was already at breaking point thinking her son had killed Ben. Plus she probably did mean to kill her son due to the fact jacobs photo album was in the rubbish. But yeh I think the mum thought they would of both died from the crash but her plan had backfired so she made a cover story to save her self from attempted murder. Thanks for reading this lol x
Totally agree, she failed the murder-suicide attempt and then tried to save herself, and her marriage, after an act of impulsivity. The biological psychologist never told the family about the gene that the mother passed down to her son... which begs the question, maybe she and him are alike as murders who act on rage/impulsivity and then suffer from some memory loss after. Jacob did show a great lack of empathy after all.
I really enjoyed this series overall! Performances and tone were terrific! But, the changes they made from the book to the series for the final episode felt very weak to me. It feels like an attempt of a cash grab for a second season. SPOILERS AHEAD In the book, Hope is found dead and both Laurie and Jacob die in the car crash. You really understand how much stress Laurie was facing and the guilt she felt as a mother for basically having raised a potential serial killer. Feeling like she almost had a hand in the murders as well. It was a fitting ending to this mystery that was left for audience interpretation. The show’s ending was lazy and I hope they don’t potentially ruin this series because they will be working without the assistance of the source material that made it so great.
@@thetruth830 You could be right and that might be the correct move. But, that hasn't stopped other limited series like 'Big Little Lies' and others from renewing.
So if Hope died, was Jacob arrested? Clearly not since the Mom killed herself and Jacob. So who killed Hope? Or did the Mom kill Jacob in Mexico right after she found out hope died ?
Erin Hoyer Hope dies in the book and Laurie believes that Jacob is responsible because she finds a blood stain on his clothes. She starts to spiral, similar to how she does in the episode, and confronts Jacob in the car and crashes it. Only in the novel, Jacob dies instantaneously. Laurie survives. The book ends with Andy trying to imagine what Jacob would have become if he had lived
It was Jacob who killed Ben. In the court scene, a witness says he heard a boy say "Stop you're hurting me!" and in Jacob's story that he wrote, "Jason" says "Stop you're hurting me!" after "Brent" twists his arm back. This is all in episode 7, doubt it's a huge coincidence.
I like Chris Evans. He is kinda like Ryan Gosling in the same way he acts properly calm or totally douche. Would like to see him in a Big Short type of comedy or a Denis Villeneuve film.
I think he’s actually going to be the dentist in the new Little Shop of Horrors movie. It’s not Big Short or Denis Villeneuve (both of which I’d love to see), but it’s something different and its going to be interesting non the less lol
1) Making the t-shirt black not only pulls focus away from the t-shirt's design & draws attention to the subject matter & the reviewer of said subject matter, but it also leaves room for the subject's title to be displayed without overcrowding the thumbnail. Nothing wrong with it being in the video if it's not featured blatantly/prominently though. 2) If the design is in the thumbnail, chances are that it might be seen as an inadvertent advertisement for the manufacturer of the t-shirt, who may not want to have associations with the reviewer if they disagree with with them and/or the contents of their video. The video might also conflict with said manufacturer's brand &\and/or credo, as it might lead to situations like demonetization or even lawsuits. Better safe than sorry.
Will I reviewed the series too and I understand the disappointing ending - however I Wiki’d the book which is more conclusive. While that is not a part of the show it made me feel a lot better about what is heavily implied.
@Will read the book instead. I think that the ending is great - you don't know what will happen and it makes it even more ambiguous. The book ending has similar ambiguity but the thing you are probably referring to, that is spelled out
The last episode was probably the weakest not because of the ending but slightly due to the predictability and slow pace...I didn't mind the ending...the fact that it wasn't resolved made it less predictable. Great mini series B+/A- I reckon.
Me too. Actually any car scene in any movie makes me nervous cause I'm expecting a crash. Esp when they look away from the road. Just. A big loud scary crash. I also get nervous when they walk to their car cause something always happens when they do that
@@masolie the show depends on getting a good final season. Season two is having reveals that take a lot of mystery away.. as I said in June we will know. Best part about the show is that it's short, no reason for filler bs seasons like lost.
Would’ve been happier with the finale if either Jacob or his mom died, or both. Still, the ambiguous ending is way better than a solid answer. Telling us straight up who did it would’ve felt like an even bigger cop out and the ending is supposed to reveal more about Andy as a character rather than provide answers.
Agreed, I would've preferred someone died from the car crash...but I don't see an issue with not flat out saying if Jacob did it or not. Andy & Laurie will never really know and I think that's where they wanted the audience. Decide for yourself.
After reading how the book handled the ending, I am even more disappointed with the show. Part of me was hoping for a "Sharp Objects" final scene where we see exactly what happened, but I would have been fine with some ambiguity if the Mexico scenes had played out how they did in the book. You invest 7 hours in the show and you want an answer, but more than that I need Laurie's actions to be a little more believable. The book gave her more justification for doing what she did.
Goldberg Brian it’s not about solving a mystery. The reveal is intended to be unsatisfying, just as it is to the characters. Whether or not it was Jacob, if the murderer was revealed, either Jacob is charged or he’s exonerated and their family lives happily ever after. The whole journey would be pointless and cliche. The drama of the show comes from Lauries doubt and Andy’s bias unconditional faith in Jacob which are both put in question by the end.
I know it’s possible Jacob only said “okay I killed him” in the car because he thought it would make his mom slow down, but I think it was a genuine confession. Still it’s not certain he did it so I feel unsatisfied with the ending. Still an amazing and thrilling show! I hope we get a second season in the future, although it’s unlikely
The show ended the way that Chris Evans was left feeling, empty. In that sense the show succeeded. The show also shows that Chris Evans is able to be both a good man and a good father. He protected his wife and son in several ways until the end.
A M - TH-cam usually changes stuff in rollouts, where they bring it to one small set of users at first, then over time all the other accounts slowly get the update as well. For me, the shift to this (crappier) layout happened about 2 weeks ago.
I loved space force, the RT score is whack but then again it’s been unreliable for the past 3 years because most critics are too woke and don’t like good shows and movies and give other average films good reviews just because they are casting someone by race or sex. I really hope we get a season 2 of Space Force it was great
When the grandpa showed up for the first time to talk to Chris Evans, this is how I imagined the conversation going. - OK where are they? - Where' what? - The pictures! - What pictures. - Come on, don't play dumb with me. Spiderman's pictures. I'm sure you have some, you're working together on that Revengers thing or how you call it. You're Mr America, aren't you?
PLEASE do a review of the German television show “Dark,” which is on Netflix! It’s an incredible show that deals with time travel, and is a mix of “Broadchurch” and “Stranger Things.”
Chris, thank you for the Skillshare sponsor. I’m going to take the opportunity to keep honing my writing/dialogue skills with classes on there, thanks to you.
Funny how I’ve seen this just now, binge watched the whole thing and the last episode was the BEST THING that could’ve happened to the entire narrative. It was amazing and a very underestimated show. They did what the “The Undoing” tried but failed.
I actually liked that no one got killed. If somebody would have died that would have proved that Jacob is guilty. But I do not like the memory loss scene though.
Just want to point out that in the book Hope did show up dead which confirmed to Lourey that her son was in deed a murderer which of what led her to driving them into the wall.
Check out quicksand while you're on foreign netflix stuff... its a swedish hit show of a highschool shooting.. its not on who did it bcuz the main female lead does it but its on why n explores every characters perspective n situations n what led it to happen. The rich bf of hers on the show isn't even an actor but a popular singer here in sweden (felix sandman) whom I've also met at backstage getting ready fro a show. And for his he looks to fict orss
I did discussions on season 1 and 2 and planning to for season 3!😄 it truly is masterful and should be praised so so much more!!! Would appreciate any views and comments and subs! I love talking about this show!!
I don’t think that she tried to kill her son from anger primarily. I think maybe anger had a part to play in it but overall I think she tried to do it because of the amount of stress, anxiety and overwhelming uncertainty that had been building up throughout the series
The ending is like real life tho. You have that ambiguity in real situations. The main theme of the show is the tag line “family is unconditional”. Chris Evans unconditionally protected his family; both his son and finally his wife. But it’s a large weight to bare, as shown by the final shot.
Ehh, spoiler alert; show makes it clear that he did it and the mom remembers what she did. The show is about the lies we tell and the horrible things we do and ignore in order to keep our families together and how lies will eventually tear us apart.
SPOILERS The reason you liked the show but not the ending is because the producers changed it to allow for the possibility of a second season. In the book, Hope (the girl Jacob befriends in the end) actually turns up dead and Jacob's mother finds blood stains in his clothes, confirming for her that he is a killer. Then she actually kills him in the car crash. In the show, they kept the girl alive to make it more ambiguous, but now the result is that the whole Mexico trip sequence seems kind of pointless. And they kept Jacob alive as well, which of course made the ending less impactful.
Phenomenal show, after season 5 I binged breaking bad for the 3rd time; then watched El Camino.. I can’t wait until season 6, we all know Saul doesn’t know if Lalo is dead or not.. and, Kim isn’t mentioned in Breaking Bad.. so I’m really curious on what happens to her.
That's the best way to describe the finale. I felt no release. It was a non-ending. I felt like, there was more to be said. The dad never had his moment, like the mom did, and I think if I did get that, I would feel some kind of closure, but I feel like shit is still on the table. I think I heard this was a limited series, but episode 8 gave me the vibe that an episode 9 exists. Idk, it's just not finished. I still fucking loved it. It reminded me a lot of Gone Girl. Both visually, tonely and plotwise.
SPOILER ALERT FOR THE SERIES AND BOOK! They changed the ending of the book in the series, and it felt so underwhelming. Basically, when Hope went missing she later was found dead, and Laurie found blood on Jacob's bath suit and she was convinced that her son killed her and his classmate before, later she crashed the car killing Jacob. Idk why they changed it, maybe to surprise the book readers, and I was surprised and let down too, this ending is bland and it sucks.
I disagree. I think the decision to keep hope alive redirects the reader into thinking maybe Jacob IS innocent and maybe he didn’t kill Ben. This also sparks an interesting dynamic in Lauries mind. I also think that keeping Jacob alive creates potential for a 2nd season and builds excitement to wonderif Jacob remembers what happened and if he can tell somewhat what really happens in that car. I think bland is not a good way to describe an ending like this
SPOILERS I did review the book and yes, that part with Hope was changed. Idk if it would’ve made THAT much of a difference. Plus in the book, Jacob dies. That would’ve made it more meaningful than if he was still alive. Now he’s on life support, but still. I thought the show was very good, but they used the book as source material and the ending would have not changed much, making it very ambiguous like Chris said. Art wise, you could look into the themes about the movie which are the bigger point I guess. “B” is a fair review IMO.
Here are my 2 crazy theories 1-first theory, the mother is pretending to have lost memories of the accident and is trying to protect herself, and that Jacob did really kill Ben, and that the 'murder gene' was actually something he inherited from his mother, as the doctor said it was transferred from the mother's genes to the kid. The mother knews she had it in her so she wasn't able to live with the guilt of having brought her son to the world and decided to take both their lives 2- second theory, is that Jacob is innocent, the real killer is Ben's father, as Ben found out that he was having an affair with 'laura's best friend' (the one that abonned her), because we seen the father having a lot of weird emotional looks and sensation at trail and went crazy when Jacob was about to come clean. Also the last seen of the show showing Andy (knowing what his wife has done and lying about it and hiding it) was exactly like the one of Ben's father, to show that these two went through the same thing (lies, guilt..)
The lighting in this show was annoyingly dark, it took me out of it at times. Like courtrooms are normally pretty bright, but in this show it seemed like they held the trial sessions with the lights off.
It's probably just to further emphasize the sense of dread that you feel throughout the show, of what the family is going through and how they deal with this whole situation.
@@thetruth830 That's awesome that you do! I understand what they were going for, but I personally feel it was overdone in some places. Regardless, not everyone's going to agree and that's a-okay! :)
------SPOILER (kinda)------- I think Laurie is the killer of Ben. When they first introduce us to her, she is getting back from a run, she has this personality trait, but... Why? Doesn't come in the plot in any meaningful way, everything else does, why is this such a mundane thing that she just does? I think it's a clue. Ben is found in the park noticable for having people running there. I think Laurie knew that Ben bullied her son, set a meeting or ran into him at that same park to tell him to stop, things got out of hand, he shows a knife, Laurie freaks and tries to take the knife (she is a mother and work with kids, she is very responsible and would try to control situations of risk for the children) but the boy struggles and put up a fight. Maybe he kills himself with it, maybe she accidentally does, but you all know the outcome. There were three points of entry, so I think of two things: the least plausible is that the said fight was harder and messier, and turn out that way. The most likely is that she realized what had happened and forges a "killer" scenario, cause it's more difficult to trace the murder to her if it's an assassination than as if it was an accident. Get it? Good, let's talk about the character after that and why she was sure it was her son. That's a lie. More specifically, a dissociative disorder. She wants her son to confess and be guilty, because she did that for him. In a mess up way, it's his fault, that's why she doesn't stop to ask him in the car, she is desperate for absolcion, anything that takes the guilty. That's why she doesn't try to kill Jacob, she tries to kill herself. There are others hints, like the "murder gene" only coming from women and she wasn't tested. The unusual focus on her trough the series. She is the one who paints the grafitti, etc... I think she is the one and, if you read this long ass comment, feel free to tell me to fuck off or share if you think it too, cause I search and nobody seems to think like me :P maybe I'm just wrong, but I like to think that I'm not.
jacob did it and had his mother's murder gene..she knew there is something wrong with her and her son that's why she wanted to end her and son's life..don't tell me a sane mother does that!!
The most disgusting part is they didn't even tell you who did it. Not even a single clue on who did it. If the girl that disappeared would've stayed missing it would probably be a better ending
This show hit different cause in middle school I was accused of something horrible and I had to go through several interviews with law enforcement and of course the whole school knew so that wasn’t fun but they finally declared me innocent but couldn’t find the one who was guilt even tho I knew who it was they couldn’t prove it for some reason and everyone’s forgotten about it now which is good but back then it was traumatizing and it forever has impacted my life.
In the novel we’re also left without knowing if Jacob was really innocent, but it ends on a different note. I wish they would’ve stuck with the ending from the novel, but I guess they left it open for the possibility of a second season.
I thought the finale was pretty much perfect. The criminal trial was never really the point of the show; seeing Chris Evans’ character’s absolute certainty and his wife’s total lack of certainty, wondering how a life can be built on something you fundamentally can never know...that was fascinating. I loved that the ending was entirely unsatisfying. Hell, having Jacob and his mom die in a car accident would’ve been a cleaner way to wrap it up. But the fact that they survive and have to keep living their lives buried in doubt and deception - that’s a truly torturous finale.
The author of the book explained that the ending was supposed to be uncomfortable. He stated that you are supposed to feel the same as the mother. She was so frustrated that she would never know the truth that she decided to end things because she could not live with not knowing. I hated the ending too but when I heard this it made a lot more sense.
I wasn't really bothered by the finale, I knew something was going to happen, was just a little unsure of what or how and it left me suspended the entire final episode constantly making me feel unsettled, I loved the whole Mexico part, the last couple minutes of them back home after Mexico felt a little weird but I honestly felt like it didn't really matter. Whether or not the car crash happened, that family would have been a mess. I kind of wish there was a bit more of a confrontation of telling the son how Patz really died but honestly I feel like this is a show that would have been nearly impossible to wrap up super cleanly.
I didn't like ending. They should have shown evidence that jacob really did it. Im hoping for primal fear like ending But i think they are thinking of S02
as aware24 said: "The show ended the way that Chris Evans' character was left feeling, empty." (I'd add feeling lost and stuck). "In that sense, the show succeeded." The show also shows that Chris Evans's character is able to be both a good man (doing the right thing, protecting his wife) and a good father (defending his son). He protected his wife and son in several ways until the end.
The reason we didn’t know if he did or didn’t commit the murder is because it’s suppose to represent the same thing the book did, it’s suppose to leave the audience to assume by their own thoughts what they think about Jacob, neither the show or book reveal if he did or didn’t do it, I read the book and was excited when I heard there was going to be a show about it and had high expectations once I heard Chris Evans was starring in it. I thought the show was great, in my opinion
Chris, I think you would like little fires everywhere because it is so thrilling and it starts Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington and they pop lay polar opposites of each other and they are fantastic. I won't say anything but it is fantastic.
I think Laurie ending up having a mental breakdown and trying to commit a suicide-homicide was their attempt to point things back to the "murderer gene". If you can remember, the doctor said that it is actually passed down from the mother.
The things that happened in the final episode, that was in the book. Only difference is that in the book, Jacob did actually kill the girl on the beach, and Laurie killed Jacob. So while it would've been more fulfilling to have a more traditional win by the family at the end, they did follow the book for the most part.
The finale made it identical. I still curse the writers of that show for not given us whether he actually did it or not. Excellent performance by Riz Ahmed!
Defending Jacob is so much better than The Night Of. The Night Of started strong but ended up garbage because the transformation from meek to hardened criminal of the guy played by Riz Ahmed was beyond absurd.
@@fmkhan213 I think it's clear Jacob did the murder. My bigger questions are: does Jacob recover from the coma and does the dad get back together with the mom.
The way you talk about it reminds me of The Night Of. It's also a "did he or didn't he?" scenario and it's absolutely beautiful and powerful and haunting.
The show was so loyal to the book up until the last 30 minutes. Originally Hope the girl from the vacation did die and Jacob had blood on his swim trunks. The body wasn’t found for a few weeks but Jacob was the last one to be seen with her. That’s why Laurie did it because she knew at that point that he did it. And Jacob ended up dying in the end.
I never got that she lost her memory. She SAYS that she dosen’’t remember, but I doubt that. To protect herself she says: ”What if he wakes up and belives I did it to hurt him.” It’s a show about lies. Every member of the familiy lies and it is what destroyes them.
Yea, I was a little skeptical about it. I mean it's not impossible she lost her memory, but idk it seemed pretty convenient.
Ending was dumb
Pineapple Pioneer Very eloquently said.
She doesn't remember. It's all about roles and the "I'd do anything for my son". Even with everyone having lied at some point.
Jacob: Is the big enigma
Father: Who despises his father for what he did and who he is, ends up letting crimes and lies pass just to keep his family together.
Spookylicious
The series leaves the burden on him, and her just going along with the lie...again.
I thought if they had at least shown someone responsible for Ben’s murder, then the two of them being uncertain, and living in a lie would’ve been more tragic.

(I'm 18 and my high school doesn't do these things, at least the majority that I know)
Rayan animation i’m in middle school and my classmates have had their nudes leaked, sent nudes and wanted bjs maybe my school just fxcked up😂😭
This series shot in my home town of Natick MA.
Oh yeah I remember this! Natick Ma represent!
Thank you so much for sharing this experience... it's wonderful and oddly satisfying to know that the people you admire and love from afar are exactly how you imagine they are.
Wow
thats amazing
Chris Evans has come a long way in his acting career. I haven't seen this yet, but I know a lot of his recent roles have been pretty damn good.
Proving that he is more than Captain America.
@@mrsinister8978 The irony is that before he was Cap he was typecast playing "Bro" Douche characters and Cap was seen as Playing Against Type.

good thing you didn't, because hes just a regular guy trying to concentrate on his job. he'd have experienced that as very annoying and cringy.
I love the finale. The whole season for me was about Andy dealing with everything. In the end, he is broken with all the secrets
thank you
Yeah I agree. The "did he, didn't he?" was secondary to the family drama.
i also loved the finale. the acting was amazing all the way through, but chris and michelle really did a great job at portraying broken down individuals over all the turmoil their family has been through in the last episode. i also liked that i was blind sided in that i expected answers from the last episode but didn't get any. it's kind of brilliant when writers leave things up to the audience's imagination, i'm sure that isn't easy to accomplish
i didn’t like the finale i like shows with closure and there really isn’t closure and the mom is a turd for trying to kill herself and jacob. like so much for saying even if you did it i will always love you……even if i’m gonna kill u now like bruh.
I also didn’t like the final episode, I would have much rather they stick with the original ending of the book which was basically the same events but with the opposite outcomes (~SPOILER~) the girl from the resort was actually found dead and Jacob passes away immediately from the crash and Laurie is in critical condition
None are satisfying. I want real answers

He's amazing and so good looking. This is his peak
If he gets a nom it's only because not much else is out. Evans is terrible in this. Mark Ruffalo has this in the bag anyways.
@@thelema10 but he was amazing with this he acted beautifully
the show ended up being more about loyalty to family regardless of morality then solving the murder... i think? idk that's what i felt like
I felt the exact same as you
The author of the book (which this show based on) described it as a family drama _that involves murder_ so.. yeah they kinda left it hanging
Yeah i got this too. "Family is unconditional" is the show's headline, after all.
It's kinda like that show 'The Night Of'. Not really about solving the murder but showing its effects on the families involved.
If the show ended with Jacob finally confessing to killing Ben when his mom was grilling him about it in the car.... Then the mom is so shocked and horrified she still runs into the tunnel to kill them both...Show would have been so freakin good. Just saying
That was how the book ended.
This series had me in awe. I was shook. Every episode was so captivating. Cinematography is incredible. Lots of Prisoners vibes. I was blown away with this show. It’s incredible in every way. I hope Chris gets an Emmy nomination because he was brilliant

Predicatable? I mean maybe after they found Hope, but prior to that I really thought he had killed her...I was at least surprised to see she wasn't dead.

@@Ambrooks83 His lack of empathy came from his father's side. Maybe the impulsivity came from his mum

I really enjoyed this series overall! Performances and tone were terrific! But, the changes they made from the book to the series for the final episode felt very weak to me. It feels like an attempt of a cash grab for a second season.
SPOILERS AHEAD
In the book, Hope is found dead and both Laurie and Jacob die in the car crash.
It's a limited series though- that means there's only one season.
@@thetruth830 You could be right and that might be the correct move. But, that hasn't stopped other limited series like 'Big Little Lies' and others from renewing.
This ending was more suited.
So if Hope died, was Jacob arrested? Clearly not since the Mom killed herself and Jacob. So who killed Hope? Or did the Mom kill Jacob in Mexico right after she found out hope died ?
Well if Hope is dead then Jacob IS guilty
I don’t understand why the mini-series so faithful to the book expect for the ending! Book ending makes more sense! Overall great show!
how does the book end?
Exactly that reason: "expect for the ending."
Except
Erin Hoyer Hope dies in the book and Laurie believes that Jacob is responsible because she finds a blood stain on his clothes. She starts to spiral, similar to how she does in the episode, and confronts Jacob in the car and crashes it. Only in the novel, Jacob dies instantaneously. Laurie survives. The book ends with Andy trying to imagine what Jacob would have become if he had lived
Alison Faith thank u! They probably didn’t do it cause they’ll want to make another season.
Yea I think it’s obvious that Jacob did it.
I agree. The victim yelling "stop youre hurting me" was not public knowledge.
Not Another Teen Movie. Lololol
Anybody ever notice that Chris's shirt is almost always black in the thumbnails, but in the video he has the cool t-shirts?
There are many that you may not have to do with Fernando, there's nothing wrong with the rachel absolutely not, Fernando.

Will I reviewed the series too and I understand the disappointing ending - however I Wiki’d the book which is more conclusive. While that is not a part of the show it made me feel a lot better about what is heavily implied.
Will I actually loved the ending so much, I thought it was oddly fulfilling tbh. I might be in a minority.
Go watch THE NIGHT OF on HBO Max if you liked this show.
Ending was good
The show is not about if Jacob did or didn’t, it’s about the devastating effects that it has on this family. I loved it.

When his story was read in court, my whole viewpoint changed from innocent to guilty. I felt just like his mom did.
The drama of the show comes from Lauries doubt and Andy’s bias unconditional faith in Jacob which are both put in question by the end.
fong03 yes, I agree with you on the Mexico part as well
It’s a shame “Defending Jacob” didn’t get awards recognition in 2020
I know it’s possible Jacob only said “okay I killed him” in the car because he thought it would make his mom slow down, but I think it was a genuine confession. Still it’s not certain he did it so I feel unsatisfied with the ending. Still an amazing and thrilling show! I hope we get a second season in the future, although it’s unlikely

Nobody asked for your opinion.
I wonder if Chris would do a review of better call Saul, since he did breaking bad.

I think bland is not a good way to describe an ending like this
@@jacksauce3025 We dont always need a sequel or second season. Less can and often times is more
@@PantsaBear most of the people didn't know the book existed. I think making a series was the best decision.
SPOILERS
I did review the book and yes, that part with Hope was changed.
Here are my 2 crazy theories
1-first theory, the mother is pretending to have lost memories of the accident and is trying to protect herself, and that Jacob did really kill Ben, and that the 'murder gene' was actually something he inherited from his mother, as the doctor said it was transferred from the mother's genes to the kid. The mother knews she had it in her so she wasn't able to live with the guilt of having brought her son to the world and decided to take both their lives
2- second theory, is that Jacob is innocent, the real killer is Ben's father, as Ben found out that he was having an affair with 'laura's best friend' (the one that abonned her), because we seen the father having a lot of weird emotional looks and sensation at trail and went crazy when Jacob was about to come clean.
The last Tyler Perry movie did that, too, and it had this awful, drab-blue color pallet on top of that
It's probably just to further emphasize the sense of dread that you feel throughout the show, of what the family is going through and how they deal with this whole situation.
It's that filter they used with the blue grayish tint
Huh, I actually liked it, it fit the tone pretty well.
@@thetruth830 That's awesome that you do! I understand what they were going for, but I personally feel it was overdone in some places. Regardless, not everyone's going to agree and that's a-okay! :)
I loved Cherry Jones as Jacob's defense attorney. And Michelle Dockery's American accent is bang on!
HBO's 'The Night of' mini series is very much similar to this and it is way better than this one and also has good ending
So much easier to set something up (and complicate it) than resolve it. Resolving it masterfully is what takes something from good to truly great.
Mom: Jacob, honey, it’s time for dinner

------SPOILER (kinda)-------
I think Laurie is the killer of Ben.
Ya that definitely did not happen. It was obviously Jacob I just wish the show would have told us for certain
"Whatever it takes"
So happy you posted this review.
I did enjoy this roll out.
I was hooked after the first 3 episode binge.
The most disgusting part is they didn't even tell you who did it. Not even a single clue on who did it. If the girl that disappeared would've stayed missing it would probably be a better ending
She died in the book actually and that made it sort of obvious Jacob did it
This show hit different cause in middle school I was accused of something horrible and I had to go through several interviews with law enforcement and of course the whole school knew so that wasn’t fun but they finally declared me innocent but couldn’t find the one who was guilt even tho I knew who it was they couldn’t prove it for some reason and everyone’s forgotten about it now which is good but back then it was traumatizing and it forever has impacted my life.
As a survivor of a false sexual assault allegation, I can say that this show really does portray how a family can be destroyed.
Watch "The Hunt" if you haven't already, with Mads Mikkelson.
@@chili24137 fantastic movie and to Spencer I am so sorry to hear that hope you still can have a nice good life.
Yep the ending was good. It won't make the masses happy and I for one like that. I don't give a damn what most people want.
HoustonProductions1 Glad to see you here Houston!
Huh, I never thought about that. Great insight!
You are keeping us alive during Quarantine
Best T-shirt yet, Chris 😁❤
4:05 I was completely silent during this whole video until he dropped this (spoiler) bit of information, when I actually said NICE out loud lol

I think in the book, Jacob does kill that girl. Then the mom crashes the car and kills him.
I really enjoyed all the details and the story, it was captivating. Great acting too.
This show was phenomenal. Everyone’s great in it.
No.
Watched it all, still scratching my head about whether he was guilty or not.
I didn't like ending.
They should have shown evidence that jacob really did it.
Im hoping for primal fear like ending
But i think they are thinking of S02
as aware24 said: "The show ended the way that Chris Evans' character was left feeling, empty." (I'd add feeling lost and stuck). "In that sense, the show succeeded."
The show also shows that Chris Evans's character is able to be both a good man (doing the right thing, protecting his wife) and a good father (defending his son). He protected his wife and son in several ways until the end.
this show was shot in my area. pretty dope
Ayeee I'm from Worcester
The best season this year. Only Dark s3 and Fargo are going to be as good .
Finished the book today. Phenomenal. Binged the episodes today. Awesome!!
I love how you can tell what's Chris's opinion on the movie just by looking at the video thumbnail
Kerry Washington was a joke, so cringe. Reese was amazing though, good show overall
Kerry overacted just a tad bit but overall I agree it was a fantastic series.
That show is SO forgettable!
I think Laurie ending up having a mental breakdown and trying to commit a suicide-homicide was their attempt to point things back to the "murderer gene". If you can remember, the doctor said that it is actually passed down from the mother.
While in self-isolation, can u please review the remaining movies from ur book which u haven't reviewed yet?
The things that happened in the final episode, that was in the book. Only difference is that in the book, Jacob did actually kill the girl on the beach, and Laurie killed Jacob. So while it would've been more fulfilling to have a more traditional win by the family at the end, they did follow the book for the most part.
Sounds a bit like “The Night Of...” on HBO.
The finale made it identical. I still curse the writers of that show for not given us whether he actually did it or not. Excellent performance by Riz Ahmed!
Rather watch the night of again, not worth really watching.
Faran Khan they gave us that he didn’t...
Please review the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV Show!
Yes!!!
Man I was really hoping you'd review this, and I'm so glad you did!
"The worst reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes" that's getting a Hilariocity. He's reviewing Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever. Oooooh boy.
