    Mark Ricciuto sounds like he’s part of the problem. ‘Look, it was four years ago [it doesn’t matter when it happened; it happened]. We’ve all moved on [it sounds like a sweep-under-the-carpet-of-time comment]. The Club’s moved on [ditto]. Hopefully Eddie’s moved on too [sounds like a ‘we’re sick of hearing about this - get over it’ comment]. Nowhere in that lip-service is deep or sincere regret expressed, let alone heard in his tone of voice. Just matter-of-fact, typical monotone Ricciuto drone. In his capacity at the club at the time, if Ricciuto knew nothing he had a very poor connection to the club. If he knew something, what did he do in his highly-paid, influential position? This whole sordid affair is not something clubs and ‘current players’ simply ‘move on’ from. This is deeply in the heart, soul and very fabric of Australia’s socioculture. Every time it happens, someone says ‘sorry’. The point is not ‘sorry’. The point is it happens…again and again! And it takes a complaint by the aggrieved to person to start the soul searching! The club didn’t have the moral fibre to address the incredibly low standard the Crows set themselves, or the fact that they failed to meet even that standard. It’s not just the Crows, to be ‘fair’ to all concerned. Where is the moral courage to confront what is a very divisive opinion? Where is the ‘leadership’? Leadership, of course, is extremely difficult to define…but patently obvious in its lacking. And it is lacking in Australia, even at the level of boys clubs like afl teams!

    Eddie has done the courageous thing, the difficult thing, and shown strong leadership in the process. His people look up to him as an Elder, he has not let them down. What I would like to know as a Crows supporter, is what the hell happened in that camp? I am one of the few Crows supporters who do not deny this camp ever happened, or that it has had a detrimental effect on my team. and that certain individuals have got to go, that includes, Mark Ricciuto.

    This is standard practice at most sporting clubs. Not the camp but nepotism, degrading of people, bullying and cliques, this is the reality of every day in any sporting club. I have had first hand experience of being removed from a coaching role after questioning why I was told not to pick certain children in an elite sporting organisation because the operations manager and his assistant had an issue with the parents so the children paid the penalty. I was threatened with violence and faced physical violence because of me questioning the inherent nepotism within the organisation. I am glad I have left and removed myself from such a cancerous organisation as it was extremely stressful and to difficult to change as the power of the entrenched clique is to great.

Every time he opens his mouth on issues of race he somehow finds a way to convince us he's even dumber than we thought. This is why you need outsiders (people who didn't grow up within the footy culture) to be in prominent positions to call out the bs that's taken for granted as normal behaviour and are able to objectively see things as they are. Hockey Canada (the governing body for ice hockey) is undergoing its own reckoning right now due to similar issues of problematic cultures.

    • @user-oi9to7ux7k
      @user-oi9to7ux7k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nonsense. It's the outsiders infesting AFL boards, high performance types, and the suits direct from the corporate world who are the problem. They try to justify their positions by creating a mess like this. They don't understand the sport or culture. It's football, not a Fortune 500 company.

    • @kiroolioneaver8532
      @kiroolioneaver8532 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-oi9to7ux7k Maybe I should've been more specific (you raise legitimate points). Outsiders can include fans/supporters as long as they are not people who grew up inside the culture of the sport. But too often, you get these good old boy cultures where things are done a certain way because that's the way it's always been done. There's no one to say why do you guys do this thing which is clearly stupid/not working/dumb. This goes for any and all industries (and even individual people to a certain extent). We all can't see past the end of our own noses and sometimes need outsiders to call us out on the things we do that we don't know why we do them.
      Edit: Caro's a perfect example. She grew up around the sport but obviously wasn't in the locker room as a player and didn't play as a pro so she's able to more viciously call out the sport on things that elicit eyerolls from the general public but the ex-players and ex-execs and such are more defensive on/try to somewhat rationalize or downplay.

    Two things come to mind about all this and firstly this happened 4 years ago with most of those involved now gone, yes there are still a few of the morons there but continuously dragging this up is not good and unfair to all the new staff and players at the crows. A big part of the hysteria from the media is about trying to get followers and to hurt the club, the main instigators in Wilson and McLure have a past record of attacking certain clubs.
    Secondly and most importantly is who in their right mind think crap like what went on in this camp is good and beneficial to anyone? Why is it a positive thing to make people feel crap and embarrassed about themselves! Anyone who resorts to this kind of negative behaviour for whatever reason they have should be prosecuted. The Crows have and still are copping so much flak for this which is deserving but the people that ran the camp have all been but forgotten, they copped some flak at the beginning but it has all been directed at the Crows for most of the time

    Can’t believe they are reheating this story again. I went on a terrible school camp in year 10. One night my tent collapsed and I spent the entire night in the rain. Another night, ‘survival night’, we slept ‘under the stars’ - which was really just a freezing cold night with no shelter. It was horrible. I got over it though after about 2 weeks.
