    After watching many reaction videos, i'm still amused by America's obsession with pads and helmets. I played rugby for 12 years, and not once did I wish I had a helmet or pads.

    • @letsgo8814
      @letsgo8814 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      😂What are those "helmet and pads"?

    • @bobbobskin
      @bobbobskin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@letsgo8814 agreed. the lack of "protection" means that tackles are made safely as it's skin on skin, bone on bone, muscle on muscle. The tackler and the person taking the tackle are both taking the impact on their own bodies, so it's managed and proportionate. Plus, yes, when we play (have played since I was a kid in school and still play sometimes today at unfit club level) we do all fight as hard as we can for the win, but the attitude of respect in the game is so ingrained ...
      I've always fully committed to take down bigger guys (I'm 6ft and about 70kg, 1kg = 2.2lb so that's close on a buck fifty in american) ... and 48 years old
      Rugby (and having been a civvy attach to the army) means that I can still run for an hour and a half, wearing a suit, to get to a meeting on time, when the motor broke down and I needed to get to a meeting (did that last week) pegging it all the way with my internal drill sgt yelling at me "kill the f*cker, keep pushing, don't slow up, push, push, stop slacking, you got somewhere to be son, show some bloody bottle, what, tiredness is a state of mind, don't stop now, you gotta push it harder, gotta fight when you get there, so push now" ...
      Rugby instills the same kind of spirit as military training - a spirit to push your body, to accept pain for the team, to commit to take the hit for your teams advantage and to be brave and to learn how to be couragous.
      I always respect, and always feel respected, by other players. We form a bond based on knowing that when you take to the field in a game of rugby, that you will put it all on the line during the game, and will fight for the win, but you see that your opponent, the man against you, has heart and soul, and is showing that same commitment for his team too.
      That's something we don't talk about enough. When a little guy goes for the tackle on the big bulldozer, because it has to be made, it's one of those moments like when an aircraft lands in bad conditions and the passengers clap the pilot, you say "that man has heart" and immediately you have respect for him on and off the field.
      The other thing which we dont talk about is the social levelling advantage especially in america, for young black men to get into Rugby at club level. This might sound cynical but America is a deeply racist and segregated nation. Playing Rugby is probably the fastest way for a young black male in the US to make connections with people with power, position and opportunity... why? because it's a game which in the USA has been played primarily by rich, university educated white dudes who went to universities with a rugby union programme ... and it's not "nfl" ...
      It's however ... once again like the army, a place where everyone is judged not on their background but on their heart and bravery and courage on the field, and trust me (and everyone else here who has played a game) it takes all of these to even catch the ball when it's passed to you and you know there are no blockers, and you have 15 men from the other side running straight towards you to tackle the sh!t out of you, if they can. That's when you realise that you'll take one for the team, you'll wait until they make contact with you, to take out as many defenders in the tackle as you can, before you pass off the ball to your team mate... to give your team the best chance of scoring. That takes bravery and it also earns you respect and a brotherhood for life from everyone who has ever played a game, and that respect is binding and forever.

      I only played Rugby at school and at that time there was very little regulation as to how to properly set a scrum, or even what body-types shouldn't be in a scrum
      I was a prop, on the left side. I say that because sometimes that meant I was loose-head, and sometimes tight-head... the two packs just came together however.
      We didn't know about scrum caps
      My ear was badly torn in a head clash with my opposite number.
      I'm glad that we now how SOME safety measures in the game.
      I'm more annoyed that my local team - the Parramatta "Two Blues" decided to ditch the local identity and become "Western Sydney" Two Blues. They are now a more generic name than associated with the city that had then for most of the 130 years of the teams existence (although they started out as "Cumberland")
      Some things should NOT change.

    Mama they don't have to slide it in like that they just need to place it down and have downward pressure, but sometimes the dive/slide makes it harder for them to be tackled while in the process of scoring and other times its just an early part of the celebration.

    they slide into the "end zone" because to score, the ball has to touch the ground. AFL you only have to cross the line. if i cross the line, the opposition can still stop me from scoring.

    Good on mama! Your son should go find his local rugby team ... they are all over the USA and they are the best "melting pot" to make connections.
    Rugby has a community. Fight hard on the field, but everyone has a meal afterwards together, and respects the ref, respects their opponents. We go to the pub with the other team when we finish a game. I am 48, now play occasionally It's a brilliant community, and the best way to get "connections".
    You are judged by ypur heart, not your background

  • @siyabulelamanona1438
    @siyabulelamanona1438 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    In the beginning: He jumped on the ground because one needs to have downward pressure on ball while touching it down in the 'endzone area' in order to secure points of 5 for try (which is touch down) and 2 for conversion (which is a field goal awarded only when a try has been scored).
    @6:45min It's called a scrum. It's when the other team has committed a minor foul and both teams then compete for chance to win the ball through physically pressuring each pack of forwards away/off the ball.

    • @siyabulelamanona1438
      @siyabulelamanona1438 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Last question.
      The conversation(field goal) is usually kicked parallel to touch line ('out bounds') at the position the ball touched the ground.
      Hence it can be in front of the polls or towards the side.
      That's why you may see players run towards the polls when in or close to try line/zone - it makes the kick for easier for the kicker

  • @ianarnett
    @ianarnett 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The hint is in the name of the video! They are The Springbok, that is South Africa national team and they are World Champions. Mind you similar videos exist of other teams, particularly the team in black, The All Blacks which is New Zealand. American Football is derived directly from rugby; up to the 1860s it was played extensively in your country, particularly the colleges but you considered it too rough and changed the rules. Over time you developed your game, but there are many harkbacks to rugby eg touchdown, although you don’t have to do so to score. Your game is a series of short plays to achieve defined aims eg 10 yards. Rugby is continuous with no stops apart from fouls or injuries. That is the main difference, not that you wear padding and we don’t. Professional players play until mid 30s and amateurs even up to 60s. Mind you the pitch is grass, not artificial! You’d do best to watch a video of the laws (not rules) and a game. Great to see your interest.

    To score a try (worth 5 points) you have to touch the ball down to the ground (under control), "on or over the try line". That is where American Football gets its 'touchdown' from originally (but they don't actually have to do it anymore). Players often dive or slide in to make it harder to tackle them and so they can keep hold of a slippery ball with both hands, but also, as shown here, to showboat their finish. Where the ball is initially touched down marks the point where the subsequent 'conversion kick' must be taken level with for the extra 2 points. A ball carrier will always try to get closer to the goal posts to make the kick easier, but only if it is safe to do so.

  • @xeno9671

      personally, I rather like End Zone as a term for the in goal area past the try line...
      I don't think we should get hung up as a community about using US friendly terms for our game...
      It's out of bounds or it's in touch... well, we know what both mean...
      It's important to educate the terms so people can understand the commentary ... but lets not allow terms to get in the way of people getting involved...

  • @silvertongue3003
    @silvertongue3003 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    They don’t have to jump and slide over the line they just have to touch the ball on the ground behind the line for it to count, but diving over the line at speed means there’s much less chance of someone stopping you.

      no... that's not the case... you slide in because it means it's more difficult to get "held up" in the goal area before you touch the ball down, as to score a "try" which is the term for a touch down, you have to touch the ball down on the ground. It's actually about making it more likely to score without the other side being able to stop you from scoring as just crossing the line isn't enough.

    You have just watched the highlights of the South African Springboks. They have just won their 4th World Cup, the most of any team in the world. Rugby is a fun rabbit whole and yes, there is the MRL in America which you can watch or play...

    The Springboks (Green) are the national team of South Africa... they just won the Rugby World Cup foe the 4th time.. only country to do it.
    New Zealand (AllBlacks) has always been considered the best team for decades and South Africa ( Springboks) are also considered on par as these two teams have the biggest sports rivalry of any sports... even American football. This rivalry is more than 100 years old.
    It's a pity that Americans have not embraced rugby and only finding out about it now..

    How come is it a hood soccer when they use hands? Football (the real football not the American one) doesn't allow you to use hands and tackle aggressively. This is a higher level of what you you Americans call football

    I am from south africa and played rugby for many years. best sport out there. also btw, you have to put the ball down on the otherside of the try line to score a try. you have to control the ball when you put it down. so diving down keeps control of the ball all the way, also while youre in the air, the opponents are not actually allowed to make a tackle on you if youre in the air. so Diving guarantees the try

    The roots of NFL is actually rugby. You are watching the Springboks, which is the South African National Rugby Team and four time World Cup Champions. Rugby itself is actually played across the USA, Canada and famous in South America. Unlike NFL it does not have downs, and is nonstop except for game infringements. And yeah, I am proudly South African!

    My generation played rugby 🏉.
    We started at age 5.
    I was playing in 1970 at for my school.
    You played in bare feet./no boots.
    In the frost or rain. As it’s winter sport.
    But the sports on offer now are so diverse.
    So it gives they have more opportunity other than Rugby or League.
    Other sport going professional.
    The football/soccer leagues.
    Basketball teams.
    Water sports etc.
    It’s a good thing to have a choice, we never really had.
    As a male in New Zealand 🇳🇿 you just played Rugby or Rugby League.

    the rugby world cup 2015 springboks South Africa 64-0 USA eagles. RWC 2023 Namibia South Africa beat USA and couldn't qualify USA in number 22ish position out of 140ish countries that play rugby. In world rugby rankings springboks number 1 again for umteenth time never slipping below number 4. there has been 10 tournaments since 1987 first RWC for web ellis trophy south Africa played 8/10 due to apartheid sanctions and won 4/8 times =50% strike rate and we about to go RWC 2027 in Australia back to back to back 3 times and changing the face of rugby forever. pls react to springboks vs France RWC 2023 QF as well as semis and finals against our all time rivals the all blacks. 2 teams that dominates the globe of fierce warriors welcome to the war games y'all's. America has a lot of catching up to do as a global power they are weeeeeeeeak. couldn't beat Namibia only has 2million citizens in entire country and beat the world super power usa. pity usa has such an inward looking glass perspective that it changed the rugby league into NFL with pads helmets boring game to watch NFL 🥱can't watch that sh.....t

    The kick where you asked how did he kick that is actually an easy kick considering it gets worse depending on where you put the ball down in the try line
