So, I decided a couple weeks ago that I need to really dig deep into my Celtic roots and then you pop up on my you tube feed. There are a couple of wise women in Ireland that have channels here that I follow. When I was a child my daddy and his mom would speak Gaelic to each other from time to time. I was involved in Irish dancing and my daddy would play piano and sing some Irish songs and he would tell Irish jokes. My grandmothers parents came over right before she was born and are from Cork and Munster areas. I am so thrilled to have found you! I miss Lunenburg, but life is good here. you look wonderful.

Hi Kate. My name is Tatiana. I'm from Brazil. You inspired me so much with your words and tenderness. Sadly, I don't feel very connected with the folklore of my own land. I do prefer the tales and stories of the British islands. They fascinate me. I really enjoyed your advice about collecting stories... I'll try to write some of them and to make a little drawing of a symbol connected to the story. I just drew this healing bird in my sketchbook after listening the story of a man searching for an enchanted bird, and when one of its golden feathers fell from the sky into his hand, he had this deep, sacred feeling of having understood a greater truth about his own self. Thank you so much 💚🧚🏼‍♂☘

Tatiana, and now you have inspired me and all of us with your beautiful description of this story AND of your creative and heartfelt response to it: thank you! I'm so glad you're here. You have what I think of as "the Irish feeling" which is warmth and connectedness, an interest in people, and an openness. Thank you so much for your comment and for your kindness!

Both the story, and your sketch are so inspiring. Thank you for sharing this. I'm curious about your genetic heritage. My daughter is a genealogist and over the years, as she has explored our family roots, it's helped me feel connected. My mother's parents were German and my husband's mother was from Ireland. Both of our father's families came from Europe as far back as the early 1600's. Some with well documented stories. Others with simpler backgrounds, but equally valuable. Knowing their hardships and triumphs make me deeply grateful.

My husband is Native American, and they too have winter stories. They cannot retell them until after the first snowfall but because we live in a state that doesn’t always get snow, they may tell them if it’s freezing cold. I make beadwork and leather items for him, sew clothing for his cultural activities, skirts and dresses for my family and myself. He plays Native American flute, and other instruments

My Irish grandmother crocheted. Though she crossed over to the other side, I can still feel her presence when I crochet. She and her sisters crocheted beautiful works with thread, and yarn. They made dolls, afghans, doilies, table clothes, and clothing. I am currently making a diagonal granny stripe throw with yarn in the colors of berries and snow. The yarn feels like butter in my hands.

My Dad was adopted and therefore didn't grow up with his Irish heritage. I've found some cousins of his (Dad has passed), and they are proud Irish Americans with a deep and present culture. My Mom is Native American and was raised on our tribal reservation. That is the culture I am familiar with and the parallels are striking, especially the cultural emphasis on story telling. I have been telling and writing stories since I could talk or pick up a pen. I'm busy with career, family and working on a Doctorate but I still fit in some writing and you are very inspirational. Hi Kate. Thank you for your offering. I came across it this morning and have thoroughly enjoyed it the 3 videos I’ve seen so far. I’m a lifelong musician and as I neared my 60s I found I was very dissatisfied with the world of classical music. I was drawn to Irish traditional folk music and ultimately decided to retire and focus on Irish culture. My Irish lineage is quite distant but I can’t deny how much it speaks to me. I’m looking forward to spending more time painting this season and learning more tunes. Fiddling brings me more joy than I ever imagined. I’m looking forward to many more stories and proverbs.

Kate, I am so glad you turned up for me on You=Tube. Another first: on You-Tube, a huge auditorium of people singing out joyfully Leonard Cohen's "Aleluia" and -- well duh, I realized I used to sing. So I sang with them beautifully. Not a croak! I play piano and will be pursuing more of this. Tonight our hearts are breaking. I love Kamala. I know she is solid gold, world class. Anyway, you help me make a new solid path for myself. I have not written a poem in decades. Now it's a book about happy days in San Francisco. And the dolls want their dresses! I have Christmas embroidery and holiday songs to play. My family used to talk about being Irish. Very romantic, but I'm fairly sure we are from England. Too bad. Thank you! God bless!

This is just lovely. Thank you! I'm not within a course at this time; I just found this, delightfully, on youtube. But I have subscribed. Recently, I moved to Portland from my home, San Francisco. The weather in San Francisco is Mediterranean, but the weather in Portland sounds like Ireland! Half the year (May-October) summery, and half the year wintry. It's been hard to get used to, but this Irish perspective is helpful! In terms of creativity, I am teaching myself a simple version of "O Holy Night" on the piano for Christmas time, having played piano as a child, but not so much since then. (And I recently retired from teaching children.) I met a harp teacher recently, and have an opportunity to begin this; it's been a lifelong dream. We shall see. I love the idea of focusing on stories. I grew up with a Mother who was a great storyteller (not the epic kind but the ordinary kind, and with so much humor woven in) and our home was often full with storytelling, especially on Friday afternoons and evenings. Again thanks and blessings.

Two real life/death stories of my own. One a little sombre, one decidedly funny, both Samhain related.
In late 2019 my mother passed. She chose cremation and I received her ashes. My intention was to take the ashes to our ancestral Cornwall to inter them in an ancient burial chamber wherein my first daughter's ashes are intered and where, if someone would bother, I wish to be.
I grew up in Australia where my mother was and live in New Zealand now so not an easy undertaking (pun?) given the following couple of years.
Recently I decided that, given my mother had wanted to come to NZ but never made it, to take the ashes up to a mountain lake I have spent much time camping by.
The thing is I kept a small amount thinking that at some time I'll make it back to Cornwall.
Well, the night of this last October 30th I dreamt I was carrying a small case that I knew to contain bones. The case was swaying and straining from my hand of it's own volition. Pretty clear I'd say, huh? And the most "real" tangible sensation I recall dreaming. Suffice to say I wouldn't let this Samhain go by without finishing this. So down to a special beach place of mine and quite a lifting feeling it was.
A Samhain a couple of years ago I was sitting in the quiet dark of a graveyard nearby. Sounds odd, I know, but for one thing it is an old Victorian cemetery with beautiful angels and crumbling corners, with rambling roses and gnarly yews. Also I have no fear of such places. I enter respectfully, asking permission and giving thanks. On such evenings I might take a beer and tobacco to share with the old boys- have a laugh and shed a tear with them. I do believe they much appreciate my visits.
Anyway this Hallow eve I was sat down , back against a tree a ways down from the path and blow me a young couple came awalkin along. And of all the rows in this sprawling boneyard the young man declared, "I really need to go!" His girlfriend berated, "You can't pee there! Have respect. Go down to the tree."
You know which tree she meant. There was moment I could have slunk away but dry leaves all around would have made things worse. So there was nothing for it. As he neared I put on my deepest graveyard voice, and I can muster a pretty deep gravel, "WHO DARES WALK UPON MY GRAVE!?". Well, pure gold 😂.
He actually leapt into the air letting forth the appropriate expletives. I then stood up and quickly explained to him that I was in fact just having a quiet beer and, a little glossing lie, I have relatives here. And if you walk on there's some bushes you could use. His girlfriend was in hysterics of laughter by now and I could hear her giggling and making fun of him as they wandered away. They've a story to tell, "Remember that bloke in the graveyard? And you jumped out of your pants..."
    Pure gold.

Mer Cait, these are such lovely, cozy traditions. Storytelling by the fire, a season of connecting, bringing these practices back into our life is a wonderful idea. I’m still thinking on the Ulster woman, I will retell that story at some point. In the meantime, how exciting that you and playing your harp more, and writing! BTY where is that first novel?? 😊 I’ve been playing with my whistle lately, though because the cat seems very bothered by the noise, I ordered a Shush whistle. Have you heard of them? They are muted so practicing is not so shrill. I think anything accomplished “by a fire” takes on an enchanting quality. Go raibh maith agat mo chara

This really warms my heart and soul and inspires me with the wish to create, Kate. Thank you. Your presentation is so warm and intimate and so interesting. I have just had the result of my DNA test and found out I have Irish genes - 3 per cent! That's not enough to explain my love of Ireland and things Irish, it must be wrong. I look forward to more videos.

Hi Kate, my name is Lorraine O Brien I am Irish and I live in Co Wicklow. I am seventy two years old and over the past few years have been performing as a Seanachai. I have told stories on the Aran Island of Inis Mor, in schools, in the Theatres and at various events and in various locations including Scotland. My background is Theatre and Drama so when I retired I decided to become a traveling She - Seanachai. I have performed for many American visitors who are proud of their Irish Heritage and it brings tears to my eyes to see how moved they are by the stories. Delighted to have come across your channel as I work on my own I feel it and you can be a great support for me to encourage me to continue with being a Seanachai. If you are coming to Ireland in the future I would love to meet up. Blessings on the work.

I am right there with you and my little pet, self-doubt, but also my other little pet called "this is fun," and you said it perfectly: we move forward. Good luck and please keep me posted. I'm excited to meet another novelist planning a winter of writing!

Thank you so much for your inspiring words.I'm trying to spend more time learning to play the piano that my Mother played beautifully but that knowledge was never transmitted to me due to circonstances.. not easy to learn at 50,but I think if your heart tells you to do something, you've got to do it...transmission is so important...otherwise knowledge and skills Will disapear .taught my daughter to make her own pancake batter this morning, and that felt good and important...in a world where everything seems available with a click....one might Wonder where simple things , have gone?i would love to hear you play the harp one day😊

Oh, how wonderful that you are taking up the piano! BRAVO, friend! May I offer one piece of counsel that I share with all of my students? Simply touch the instrument every day. That might be that you play a little exercise or practice a piece or take 30 seconds and simply explore. But in that daily befriending, you'll begin to know that you are indeed a musician. I'm cheering you on!

Yes it has always been a more creative time but I had tied it to the approaching of my November 29 birthday. I carve and paint large screens which often take about a year to make. It’s a very involved process architecturally and in preparation. There are many stages from the drawing to the relief carving, the through carving and then the painting of the images. Thank you for asking. This series is called the illuminations inspired by the book of Kells. I have just completed returning to the garden. I wish we could show images on this format

When I was a child I desperately wants to collect stories from elders. I had a very mellow dog perfect for training to be a therapy dog. I wanted to have him train and certified and visit elderly homes to hear and take down stories of the then past century (now over century and a quarter). Unfortunately it would mean my mother giving up her free time to ferry me around and she refused so I was never able to have that dream. I do still have a dear love for hearing individuals stories rather than just generalized history from books. And it’s scary to think how much has been lost and people think less and less of those who they consider “old”/“not with the times” and what not.

Thank you so much, Katie, for your stories and sharing of the Irish history and lore. I was excited to hear that you are also a musician. Five years ago at the age of 70, a friend suggested I try my hand at writing songs. What a life change. I have 64 songs now and even am sharing them with the local Southern Oregon Songwriters Association. It began as quite painful as I am shy about being visible, but they are such a kind and supportive group of creative people. Now I look forward to our get togethers, several times a month. I hadn't been writing lately with all the gardening and hosting airbnb guests. But this past month I started up again, apparently pulled by the seasonal energy as you mention. I have one music video I put together with a friend. in case you'd like to see: Thank you again for your brilliance and passion for the creative side of life. Just found your channel. Thank you for this content! It's very timely and close to my heart. I have a small favor and related question to ask if you have the time. How do you write "the person who doesn't know how to speak, doesn't know how to listen" and "the person who doesn't know how to listen, doesn't know how to speak" in Irish Gaeilge? I've never heard that proverb, but I absolutely love it. I would love to write it out and hang it above my desk. And finally, any advice or resources/classes you would recommend for a 50+ American woman (I live in New England) who wants to learn Gaeilge? I'm rubbish at languages, but I would like very much to be at least conversational and also be able to compose the devotional poems I write for Brigid each Imbolc in Irish. Thank you.

I see shat u mean, but frustrates me the way many, Americans in particular think that we are some romantic mythlical land. We are, or were, a vibrant modern country...
Now we are a messand as you say very far removed from any of this romanticised stuff. Were we ever like this really?. Turbulent country for centuries. We are a nation of writers and artists and we wove a good fairytale😅😅

Thank you for being here and for your kindness. It's true that the folklore I share here - largely sourced in the 19th and early 20th centuries and often in the Irish language - does not represent Ireland today in all its complexity and modernity. But for me and for so many others, it offers us much inspiration and beauty. I believe that we can learn a lot from the past. And no matter the changes, we can still decide to be kind.

It depends on what social, regional and interest-based 'bubble' people chose to live in.
We live in a rural area of Ireland (thank God) mostly ignored by tourists, the Irish Midlands dominated by bogland.
While we may not host too many of the high-intellect, widely known scholars, creatives and such personalities (Manchán Magan aside), there are plenty real life storytellers.
One such person tells about the magic of the bogs, the old bog men he got stories from, whose life and wisdom he tells us about.
I work for a local newspaper and always look forward to his contributions.

@@folkmikedelaney yes, do: they will love it, and who knows what you may set in motion? A whole exchange of stories, maybe! As for my first novel, I haven’t sent it out yet so it’s “in the drawer” as they say. (After Mish I lost focus about that). But now I think it might help to have book 2 well under way anyway. Thank you for asking and I’ll keep you posted 🍀

Kate, this is so rich and beautiful. I'm wondering if there was a gender difference between the people who told stories and those who told lore? Are both oral traditions? If yes, then how were they transmitted (formally, informally, other?)? Thank you for sharing this wisdom with us!

    • @katechadbournebard
      @katechadbournebard  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you! This is such a good question and rather complex. One of the major scholars of Irish storytelling, James Delargy, believed that men were mainly the tellers of the "big" tales while women were more associated with the lore (seanchas). However, I have found that there's more diversity and that these divisions don't hold up all the time. I've discovered many men who excelled at fairylore and some women who were known for telling long, complex stories.

Im sorry slightly confused. Are you actually Irish? Your accent sounds Canadian?
Im born and bred in Connacht. Why are foreigners so desperate to be from Ireland?.
Im not actually being rude..im just fascinated, because I live in England now and I, along with my huge family, we always discuss what it is about our country you are all so completely obsessed.
Your knowledge is immense, impressive, yourd an Academic so it should be, but its not the real Ireland...its not the Ireland I know. Im 66 it was never what you talk about in my lifetime. Not in any way shape or form. History is important, but the way Americans and Canadians look at Ireland and Scotland...is like some fairytale.
    Why the obsession? Please explain
Before someone says my granny or 4th times removed granny was Irish. Thats NOT being Irish. You may be surprised to know it is a source of irritation to many. Plastic Paddys like Joe Biden.
Your channel is lovely but bears no resemblance to the island of Ireland North or South.
Myth and Legend have their place.
