St. Brigit helps us cross the threshold & start again ☘️ #storytelling #inspiration #ireland #saint
Beannachtaí Lá ‘le Bríde! Happy St. Brigit's Day! Today I take you into an Irish farmhouse, circa 1850, to observe the beautiful custom of the threshold and then to listen into a story that was often told to explain why Brigit's feast day falls on the 1st of February. Brigit is a good friend to us as we practice the art of starting fresh and letting more joy and light through the door of our lives.
My question for you this week:
What do you want to LET IN? (Go down on your knees, open your eyes, and let Brigit in)
You might desire to let in light, friendship, freshness, plenty, kindness, renewal, or something else. Share with us in the comments and we'll cheer you on in opening that door!
I love your comments and read every one with appreciation and gratitude. Thank you!

Love this thank you for teaching me this so needed proverb I will share with others that need this encouragement
I enjoyed it very much! Thank you.
❤
Thank you for this story, Kate, I love everything you say about it, the many good lessons in it. I'm reminded of a story from a teen center where I once volunteered. The kids had tough stories in thrir lives. A group of them met regularly, and created new, happy endings to that changed everything. What a wise bunch they were; what hopeful, strong hearts.
I'm so glad I found you. Thanks very much for sharing your wisdom and skills. I'm beginning to start several new creative projects, and you are very helpful. Here's my new daily verse: "I am a generous host for my own creativity." Blessings.
"me conmueve" Kate, to listen to you, all the big truths you say of our heart... So many times in life i've been in front of "take a choice".... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yolanda, you are such a STAR. Thank you for your kindness and all those wonderful hearts! ❤
Thank you Kate for your valuable advice !!! I have been singing in choirs since I was 17 Now I ' m 68 and I still want to sing alone ; however, I don't dare to do so because I have a family of musicians and I have always thought I' m not so good as them Your words have touched my heart and perhaps...
I'm so glad you're going to sing. Please don't wait! This is the perfect time for singing, just as you are. And it doesn't matter about who is "good" and who is not. The most important thing about singing is enjoying it. When you do that, you are giving the world a great gift. I'm cheering you on, Singer! ❤
So true! 💖
Nothing is better!

I love these traditions for good health , especially whiskey and laughter. Can't wait to tell my brother, who'll be particularly glad to hear it.😅Every one of them good. And I love that recovering from some malady is "coming back to yourself." Thank you, Kate. More treasures from you. And the closeness of a cure to the pain one might encounter, too. Thank you for all!
You’re so welcome and I’m so glad they resonated with you - and that your brother will get a kick out of this, too. Here’s to cures we actually like! 😁
@katechadbournebard Yes! Cures that bring fun and joy into our lives. Thank you so much, Kate. Got out of bed for the first time as soon as I woke up. Marvelous dawn. Alert. Makes a world of difference.
@ Oh, that feels like hope and joy and eagerness. Wonderful, Judy!
Thank you do much I really do enjoy listening to you.
Thank you so much. You are kind to tell me! ❤️
I love Mother Mary...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I do, too ❤️
Thank you, Kate. 💚
You are so welcome! 😊
Couldn't agree more Kate! My mother used to say that! ❤
Oh, love hearing that! ❤️
That's so lovely. The doctor's book two best cures, and your mother's wisdom. ❤
I am a faith filled person but sometimes I falter ,my hope fades and I have doubts. On one occasion of this night of the soul, my friend asked me one little thing…” is God a liar?” It was like electro shock on the faltering heart of my belief. How easily said and it saved my heart.
That’s a wise and good friend you have!

Lucky for us, we're not too fussed about impressing the neighbors or anyone else. :) A wonderful pairing from ZNH and you - love and singing. Thank you!
Lovely to be in touch again! You are my Irish fairy, dying to learn from you,for my roots are in Clane Kildare but Daddy during 2nd W.W. joined the R.A.F and married in Italy and there I have been stuck although every summer we were travelling all around Erin cause we suffered so much being abroad. This is why you are my princess and I shall now introduce you yo my Irish friends in Rome! Slan go foill! Poilin💚
Póilín a stór dhil, I am ALWAYS glad to see you in Rome, in Ireland, anywhere! Thank you for sharing my videos and for your wonderful big heart. Sending you love today!
Very apropos for these times.
I agree! Small things add up to big things that change even bigger things.
If you please can I gather information of all videos you posted . In the past only travel aboard or looking for books to learn new information. Nowadays TH-cam channels as open universities for every one google is our library.
You’re right - TH-cam is an incredible resource and a new way to go to "school." I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos, and thank you for telling me!
Thank you for your wonderful cultural channel dr Kate . Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American TH-cam channels. We are as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level improve our English as well . I just read about Irish people lead longer and healthier lives than most Europeans. Eighty percent of Irish people reported being in good health. There are strong relationships with religion in Ireland and healthy traditions such as blessed objects , sacred sites , holy wells , holy water , prayer were documented as cures for various ailments . There was strong presence of healers individuals whom had specific cure in Irish society. Best wishes for you your dearest ones . I hope I can learn a lot from your knowledge.
I’m so glad you’re here and I appreciate your kind words. I'm sending you a thousand blessings and a heartfelt welcome!
You have such a bright lovely presence
Thank you for making my whole WEEK. I appreciate you!
🍃I am the one who thanks you, Kate. You have chosen a beautiful story to tell... Perhaps in it, given the twists and turns of life, by choosing kind characters, there is hope, if the person riding the wheel comes across stones on the way... Evil characters scare, cloud the view of the landscape and the perception of what is beneath our feet... If someone falls, someone will have to come to help. The wheel cannot move alone...🌱
Beautifully said: "the wheel cannot move alone." You are so right: we are in this together. Thank you for your wisdom, my friend, and so glad to have you here with us!
I grew up the oldest of 7 so I had a built in audience for my storytelling. Because I left home at 17, I always felt my story was about becoming a wanderer and choosing adventure over staying close to family. I recently changed that image when I learned from an astrologer that it is my nature to carry my home in my heart. I love exploring and making new friends. I would never have been happy to stay in one place.
That’s so powerful. What a freeing and kind re-imagining of your story! Thank you for your marvelous example!
Thanks a million!
You are so welcome! ❤️
What a lovely story! And wouldn't it be wonderful if we all could be like that with one another? Making sure everyone has a home, and friends? Thank you, Kate. I have indeed been laboring under an old story, and lately doing my best to unearth all of it, and find out how I can change it. You may have given me a key here--take one aspect...a character, or an idea, or anything else. Thank you! ❤
I am so happy to think this idea might help you loosen up the grip of an old story that doesn’t let you live as freely or joyfully as you can. Thank you for telling me and wishing you lightness and enjoyment in this story shaping. Always glad to see you, robincrow! ❤️
@@katechadbournebard Go raibh maith agat. 🙂
I thoroughly enjoy watching them in the background playing with each other. They are like little fairies running up and down the stairs.
Thank you, and I love your image of them as little fairies and totally agree! :)
Re: the nettle and the darkleaf? It’s kind of like over here of the coast of America….poison ivy, and Jewel weed. A lot of times, especially in wetter areas, you’ll find poison ivy and jewel weed growing together…. And jewel weed is a folk treatment for poison ivy rash.
That's so interesting, and in fact, I have a patch of jewel weed right next to a patch of poison ivy in my side yard. Thank you for that info!
You were just talking about just talking about getting sleep. I have horrible sleep problems. Wake up frequently in the night, etc. But I often have my phone just playing in the background so I can just quietly hear background noise. Some people sleep with the TV on the light of the TV bothers me… anyway, your voice is so calming. Have you ever thought of doing a playlist of Irish stories that could be used for sleep. That literally just go on for a while. It would take some time for you because obviously I’m talking about a couple hours worth. But that would be fantastic. Just because like I said, your voice is so calming.

What a cool idea - thank you for that! In the meantime, I hope that sleep will get easier for you. I went through a patch a few years ago when it was really hard to stay asleep. I was often tired and a little ragged, so I feel for you. One thing that is really helping right now is a set bedtime, but I know it's often more complex than that. But if I could, I would wave a magic wand and give you ten blissful hours of restful, marvelous sleep!
Beautiful! 💚
Thank you so so much!
Thank you for your wonderful cultural literary channel dr Kate . Iam Arabic lady subscriber to several British and American TH-cam channels. We are as foreigners subscribers as overseas students want to increase our cultural level improve our English as well , literature lovers too. Actually i studied English both language and literature till second year and I left college , it’s will of god not mine . I studied in drama two Irish plays ( riders to sea ) by John milingto Synge , genre tragedy about mother who lost six sons drowned at sea . Political play ( rising of the moon ) written by Augusta lady Gregory was founder of Abbey theatre. I read about Irish language known as Gaelic or Celtic language of indo European language family. Gaelic consists of 18 letters, doesn’t contain ( j , k , a , v , w , y , z . The Irish people believe in superstitions , holy wells unlucky omen , cures of well . Black Irish in 19 th and 20 th referred to Irish American. Irish folklore included banshees , fairies, leprechauns, other mythological creatures. I just found out that author of famous horror novel Dracula is Irish bram stoker , unfortunately he didn’t win any awards during his lifetime, however after his death bram stoker award was set up to honor his literary achievement in gothic horror tales . I just read right now about famous Irish fairy tale children of lir king of Ireland, his second wife who get rid of his kids to have throne for self . I hope I can learn a lot from your knowledge. My name is khatoon it’s Turkish origin name means Nobel lady as princess. My road rise up to meet you and your loved ones. ( howaya) . Iam so sorry to be little long but reading and writing both are great ways to improve our English as non native speakers.
This channel is fun, full of energy, and is really inspiring.
Linda, you have made my whole WEEK. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I _loved_ this story! Stories of kindness, fellowship and "paying it forward" are my favorites. I think this is the way Heaven is, and certainly, this is the way we should treat one another in this world.
Oh, that's my favorite sentence of the day: "I think is the way Heaven is." Thank you for that, and yes - let's make Heaven right here with kindness.
Does a storm have a special Irish meaning? Forecast is heavy storm, thought of you, because you're Irish. Best wishes. Hope you are feeling well. By us the weather forecast is often untrue, all kinds of alarms, but it is nothing. I do not know anything about it, just say: love you.
You are so lovely, floortje! Sending you love and hope you have tea and cozy blankets while you ride out the storm.
Animals and especially pets can be very amusing. They add to the videos, just like switching up your outfits or decor makes an interesting change. You can always include some bloopers at the end!
You're right - I love the way they add their own brand of magic to the videos.:)
I love this! Thank you, Kate, ever and always. The Tennyson excerpt speaks to me. Edna so funny to me! Good for her! I love the image of a crowd of poems as a motley crew. I love line by line, and writing by hand. I love your suggestions for memorizing, how intimately I'll come to know the poem and the poet. Beautiful the last Frost poem. Bits and snatches of Dorothy Parker, Yeats' Second Coming swim underwater in my mind. The first poem that came up for air, to find a few lines and memorize them, is Dylan Thomas' Winters Tale. Thank you so much!!
You are already a good friend of poetry, I see, and that's marvelous. I love hearing what you already carry in your mind and heart, and I'm inspired to hunt for Dylan's "Winters Tale." Thank you and here's to remembering more of these beautiful lines that we love!
@katechadbournebard Thank you, Dear Kate! I hope you are moved by A Winter's Tale, too. Thank you! It will be the last two stanzas I'll focus on, tho throughout the poem are, for me, images at once beautiful, poignant, and haunting. On the cusp of earth and heaven.
Yes, here's to remembering those beautiful lines we love!
@ DT’s poetic imagination is incredible. What a tour de force this poem is! So many wonderful moments. One of my favorites: the milkmaids Gentle in their clogs over the fallen sky. I’m keeping that! 😊
@katechadbournebard oh, Kate, thank you! I'm so glad we share this appreciation! "Gentle in their clogs over the fallen sky." Ah! For me, too, DT hits the ground running with, "And the snow blind twilight ferries over the lakes". So many.
Love this perspective! Such a great story❤️♾️❤️ Reasons I love oral tradition & storytelling, the dynamic vibrancy of a tale's evolution. Yes, rewriting the story!
Thank you so much, Cynthia. It's exciting to see that you truly get it! ☘️
Thanks for brightening my day Kate ❤
It is a joy for me, my friend!
"Step into who you want to be" 💗 This is so inspiring and so freeing! Thank you for sharing this!
I'm so glad this message resonated with you. Thank you for telling me! 💗
Dear kate, Listining to your Storys always gives me warm shivers, it always means it Touches something deep inside of me It so full of love and love for me is gods way to speak to us And god is never judging So the kindness of the characters makes this Story so beautiful Thank so much You dear Kate
I love what you say and agree with you with all my heart! Kindness makes every story beautiful. Thank you, my friend!
This story seems familiar to me. I love this version. There are a few stories that have haunted me. One is The Little Match Girl - a failure to make a critical leap of development due to having no caring/connected adult around. The other I don't recall much, but it's one of those captive stories (Bluebeard, Rumpelstiltskin, etc.) and the little girl has to empty the ocean by the spoonful into a bucket or/while being condemned to peeling potatoes for the king forever. (I'm probably mixing two tales together, but that's the memory.) Both of these are about helplessness and lack of agency. They've scared me since I was little. Often helpful animals help out with impossible tasks. Maybe a new ending would incorporate something with that. One other tale that really gets me is The Erl King. That is the predicament of growing up whole vs having your soul stolen. Chills.
Chills, indeed. Like you, I was transfixed by "The Little Match Girl" and how dreadfully unfair and unkind it seemed. Now I don't want to tolerate such a story. I want to write a new story in which we - you and me and all of us - NOTICE and HELP. Thank you for your thoughts here which are helpful and spark me, too.
I vaguely remember my Nair (grandmother) and my daddy telling this story, but it was much like the other version of the boastful haughty man. I like this version. It makes me look at the ego self and the spiritual self within where the ego beats up the mind with thoughts of pride or degradation of self, and the spiritual self has to remember to invite that ego in to sit a spell and be kind , to work together and realize that together always has a much better outcome. I think that is why we feel stuck. pulling ourself against itself. I know that sounds a bit schizophrenic...hahaha.
I think it sounds wise! It also sounds compassionate and freeing, and I absolutely love your reflection "together has a much better outcome." Thank you so much for your comment!
Thank you Kate! I like the reminder of charity with graciousness.
So glad it rang for you!
Mer Cait, I think you’re a mind reader! Yes, I have an old story that needs a rewrite! What an exceptional idea! I was searching for grace just this morning, go raibh maith agat, now I’m closer to finding it. You’re brilliant!
Go raibh maith agat a chara! Your message makes me so happy, and I absolutely love those moments of perfect divine timing. Here's to writing some new stories! ❤
❤
I love your stories and wisdom
Thank you so much!
What a lovely start to this day, to hear this story and your reflections. It calls to mind one of my favorite Carrie Newcomer songs ("Writing A Better Story") which I think I'll listen to again while painting my kitchen and thinking of stories~
Thank you for that - can't wait to listen, too!
