I don't know if something has changed in 2022 with FCPx, Compressor, and or TH-cam, but I followed this exactly, and STILL, YT does not do the HDR. I am watching your video in HDR on my 16" MBP, yet all my tests are 4K only. No HDR. I've watched so many of these tutorials with no success. BLAST! (yours has been one of the more straight forward ones , though, thank you.)
@@BenVallack sooooo…..YT does do the HDR. It just takes….days. There’s no way to know when it will be full HDR. YT just does its thing and some days later. Your video is now HDR. :/
Hey great video! Appreciate you putting this together. I am currently trying to upload a video to TH-cam and it has processed the 4k but its still not showing any HDR options. Is it just a matter of time before the HDR is available? I don't see anything to say that TH-cam is working on processing the HDR format but this is all new to me. I used compressor in the HEVC 10 bit HLG format for what its worth. Appreciate any insight.
So I did all of that in the settings (not compressor) and when I upload to youtube I never get the HDR, I only get it up to the 4k. And I'm able to get the HDR viewing because I see other people's videos in HDR> The HDR label also doesn't appear in the setting options when viewing. Any thoughts as to what is missing? I have all the same settings you listed here in the video but seems youtube isn't recognizing it.
finally found comments on reddit that it took few days for HDR to come up on youtube (no processing indicator was visible). So I will try that, because it seems I did everything correctly according to this video and youtube's documentation on HDR video upload.
So I followed this a couple of times for HLG3 out of my Sony ZV E10 and the resulting video never shows as HDR, I cant work out what im doing wrong, should it work with 8 bit HLG3 from the ZVE10 ?
thanks for the video! but even though i've exported as master file, and the file looks fine when i watch the file with my computer video player, when i upload to youtube and change the settings to HDR under quality, i still get super over-exposed footage on my uploads, even when viewing on the same laptop and on chrome. any tips? Thank u
awesome video and thank you. a few questions if you don't mind. when I airdropped the video to my phone 12 pro max I noticed the temp and the tint was a bit off. the iPhone looked a little on the cyan side where my new Mac Pro is looking more on the magenta side which I intended. I have not calibrated my MacBook Pro display since I read that they come calibrated form apple and are pretty accurate. Not sure if this is true. I am wondering if this is a discrepancy between to colors of the iPhone and the MacBook Pro display or if colors for some reason shifted during the export process?
Thanks so much. I wonder, is there a way to duplicate that profile in Compressor but then downscale it to 1080p? I want the settings/profiles to create the HDR (HLG) video but without having to export to 4K.
Very concise and informative. Is there any way to do get the smaller file without Compressor? I can see an HEVC 10-bit (HLG with Dolby Vision 8.4) option in FCPX 10.6 - will that work? (prior test to TH-cam suggests not)
Hey thanks, That setting should work out of 10.6 although I haven't tested it yet. Fun fact - exports from Final Cut are generally faster than compressor. I don't understand the why behind it but it's definately true.
No problem, glad it could help. 10 bit 422 from 8 bit certainly doesn't hurt anything but it doesn't make it better either. It's kind of like putting a 30 fps video clip on a 60 fps timeline. Values just get duplicated.
You could, but it wouldn’t really offer any benefit. There is also an effect called hdr tools that lets you take an hdr clip and convert to an sdr timeline. This is much more common direction to go to mix with other sdr footage.
Thank you so much for the tutorial!!:D This was super informative, and I'll definitely look into HDR Video mastering in the future. Thank you again!!:)
Thank you for your teaching. my friend. I would like to ask you a question, why after I export the HDR video and upload it to YT, the video becomes gray and the saturation is insufficient. If I watch the original video on my mobile phone or computer, there is no problem. I did not use Masterfile, I tried the compressor
Thanks for watching and the question. So much of HDR depends on the playback device and player, that's playing it back. Some browsers (like safari) can't play HDR, heck I think safari still won't play 4k youtube. So while it's great to start to understand HDR workflow - it is still a very specific thing that needs you to control the playback device. iPhones are a great way to view HDR for most people.
When I use Rec 2020 HLG, the file I render that plays back in QuickTime has different values in the shadows than I see in Final cut. This is not a problem if I set it to Rec 2020. Is there any reason not to use Rec 2020? Am I doing something wrong to result in improper playback in QT? Thanks!
I would try to make sure your export setting from final cut is also 2020, this should set the gamma tag correctly to be read by QuickTime. Is it possible that the export is not set to 2020 HLG, even though your Final Cut Pro project is 2020?
Hey Jordan! I'm a big fan of yours from back in the camera store days. Thanks so much for watching. And I agree with you about not being super stoked on the new cinematic mode on the iPhone 13.
@@CreativeVideoTips hi there! quick question because i've tried this and my hdr videos still look blown out when i'm browsing on chrome via a macbook pro. Do you happen to know anyone that's run into the same issues? (video looks fine when i use safari on the same laptop) Thankss!
This is because chrome has a problem right now on most Mac monitors to not display it correctly. It’s a bummer because if you look at it like this you did it right. However the safari version I think you are seeing it is a 1080 version I think converted to sdr. The only easiest way I know for most people to watch hdr properly is an iPhone or compatible tv.
Thank you for sharing. I would like to ask you a question. I want to upload an HDR video to TH-cam, 30 minutes long. The master file exceeds 150G, and the Apple format(hevc 10bits) export is about 8G, but there is some loss in image quality. Is there any other way to export HDR video and upload it to TH-cam?
You're welcome - thanks for the question. I would just turn up the bit rate a little bit more and use the HEVC export to give to youtube. There is no need to ever really give youtube a 150GB file. HDR and youtube is still the wild west because of some lack of browser support outside of chrome. Hope this helps - but yeah you're on the right track there with HEVC 10 bit.
Hey Ben thanks for watching. The only 2 HDR screens I have are an LG OLED TV and an iPhone XS. I think it is going to be a big deal, in fact all your favorite new Netflix shows are coming out in HDR. There is just not universal support for all of it yet (like watching youtube in Chrome on a mac isn't recognized by my 2015 iMac display so it's incorrect there).
Funny how my a7iii can actually output an hdr-compatible footage and it’s only after 3 years since its launch that I discovered this lol. Thanks for this tutorial!
@@qtben17 I know what you mean, I'm learning new stuff with this "old" gear every day. It's fun to make things that aren't the newest more valuable with a little extra knowledge :)
Thanks for your video. What I am doing is not logical, but I am getting better results setting my project to Rec. 2020 PQ not Rec. 2020 HLG with my HLG 3 files. In FCP must view using HDR as tone mapped. A bit harder to grade, but looks best with the highlights on a proper device. Again thanks.
Thank you for this informative video! Very helpful. I just got an iPhone 12 and this HDR change has been a big surprise. Curious as to where you got your stylus? It looks like it connects and works very well with your mouse pad. I'm looking to buy one for work.
Great content ;) Regarding the export: have you heard of the method of exporting the large format HDR file and running it through QuickTime and exporting it from the app as a 4k or as 1080? It will reduce the size consistently, and it will take few minutes only.

Great video @CreativeVideoTips - is there a reason you don't select the Dolby Digital HVEC option in the compressor section?
So in my a7iii use rec709 or bt2020 as Color?

How did you make the screencast video HDR?
Thanks for the video! My question is that A7iii only shoots in 8-bit, does the 10-bit 422 setting hurt the quality? Any color banding?
