I was a developer on this game. I can say that the team really tried to make something great that lived up to the legendary ride given our resources. I have great memories during my time working on it (I was an environment artist, this was around 2002). Thanks for reviewing it! Some trivia: The xbox is definitely the best and most polished version - we had to nerf many features to make things work on the PS2. Also, there was a fully developed PC sku ready to ship that was never released. Maybe if enough fans made enough noise, whoever owns the rights now can ask HVS for the runtime and release it!
AHHH thanks so much for watching! Y’all did a fantastic job for what you were given and the amount of childhood memories I have playing this with my dad is insane. Thanks for the trivia too! I love learning about the development process! Crazy that a PC version was never released!
This was a great game that certainly lived up to the ride. Your team added stuff from the 2003 movie as well. Who was responsible for the awesome doombuggie Easter egg in the ballroom? You can see a 2d image of a doombuggie pass overhead just like the ride ^^ Thank you very much for the great work on such a fun gsme. I hope this game gets re released. One question… was Zeke originally supposed to the caretaker from the ride?
I forgot to mention. In the new haunted mansion movie that just came out I noticed how madam leotas seance room is in a hidden area that looks an awful lot like the hidden seance room in youre game.
@@rexrabbiteer I believe the people responsible for the the doombuggie easter egg were the designers Josh Bear and Sean Riley... AND it is actually a picture of them in the doombuggie haha! As far as Zeke, he was supposed to be the caretaker for the house.
@@rexrabbiteer Oh my gosh wow! I didn't know that! I am the one who created that level! (The Great Hall, that includes Madame Leotas secret seance area) I took a look at the featurettes on IMDB and they sure did use the same styling and color scheme I made, the bead curtains are the same, and the floor in the movie is exactly the same way I made it hahaha. Other rooms look very similar too! Although of course both the movie and our game drew from the same source, I think someone on the lookdev staff definitely played our game! I am really glad to see it revived in this way. Thanks for sharing that!
The Blue Reaper is definitely an unsettling enemy to fight, particularly when it chases you through the closet in the Children's Room. Then fighting it is tough, since it constantly teleports around and dishes out so much damage.
While the first encounter with the banshee was unsettling, what really scared me was the closet in the children's room where you're being chased by a reaper.
I have this game on the PS2 and I can beat this game in less than an hour but I’m trying to beat it without dying. I usually die once in the game because of the Trophy Room. When the fireballs aim and try to hit you but the shields protect you. I just rush, I don’t wait for the shields to protect me and whenever there’s a fireball coming at me, I just jump to avoid it but you gotta do it at the right time or else you get hit
This was a great review! Especially considering it's one from a modern eye rather than contemporaneous to the game's original release. I think you convinced me to check it out!
One of my all time favorite games on PS2! And yes the banshee scared me too when I first saw it. I wasn't expecting anything like that on a Disney video game.
Question of the Day: Would you volunteer to be the 1,000th Happy Haunt living in The Haunted Mansion? Let me know your answers down below! Thanks again for watching!!
Call this a weird take but I would be totally up for a remake of this game on UE4, fixing the combat, adding a new death certificate for the hat box ghosts you get it. Plus the game would have the potential to nail the rides artstyle and having a more memorable ost.
I agree, It has the potential to look gorgeous with updated graphics, maybe some new individual enemies for each room. And I want constance hatchway dammit, it felt like a cop out when she wasn't in the attic level. She would be a creepy boss to encounter in the dark, swinging her axe at you. Remake it Disney, you haven't done another movie but there's still hope for this.
Oh, this game! I remember seeing it at a Costco back when I was young. Although I never played the game fully, but I remember it's existence back when the film was relatively new. Outside of that bit of memory. It was a pretty good review you did, Lucina.
When I was younger, I beat this game like 5 times. Overall it's a lot of fun. As for the combat, you gotta quickflick that L-Trigger man, it makes the combat so much easier. Circle strafing is a mandatory as well.
These're some great tips! I'll definitely have to try them out on my next playthrough. Which should be soon since I make it a ritual to play this every year lol
I believe you can also keep pressed the R1 button to shoot. You should also try to jump at the right time to avoid the axe of the knights and the scythe of the masked monster.
Great review! I’m glad to see all this love for my favorite childhood game! I agree with most of your points, but I think having enemies spawn in the hallways and after you turn on the lights in a room was a great addition. It keeps it challenging and prevents parts of the game from turning stale.
I had this on the gamecube and as a kid I thought it was really hard so I never finished it. I did get pretty far though and those screaming maids scared me too!
I didnt mind the movie however when i was a kid this game did spook the absolute crap out of me but now im revisiting this game years later and does the game hold up well honestly not sure since its been ages since playing it back on the ps2
In summary: this game is luigi's mansion and Mario 64 slapped together and disney is splattered all over it and it's got the makings of greatness, it just needs a tune up
Just recently started playing this but pretty much gave up when it got to the upstairs hallway some of those levels are so hard (im looking at you museum room) and im pretty much soft locked by the lack of lives i have
0:28 that information Seems false, hear me out, according to the Nightmare Before Christmas 2-disc Special Edition DVD Haunted Mansion Fact Cards, one of the facts stated that The Haunted Mansion opened in 1962 NOT 1969. It was originally gonna open in 1961 but it had plans to move to next year.
This is only partially true. The outside facade of the mansion was finished long before the attraction ever opened mostly because the creative team behind the ride couldn’t decide on what direction to go in. So the mansion was just an empty shell for the near decade it was there at the park. Added onto the fact that Pirates of the Caribbean’s development and construction took priority and the untimely death of Walt Disney in 1966, Haunted Mansion was shelved and unshelved numerous times throughout its development. Numerous imagineers have confirmed as such including Rolly Crump who was an artistic developer on the ride with Claude Coates and countless others. So yes, it’s true that the mansion itself was built with plans to open sometime in the early 60’s, but numerous issues lead to it being delayed. Walt never lived to see either Pirates or Haunted Mansion open at the park.
Aha. Also yeah the banshee scared me too, especially when they ambush you in the hallway. (I love the ambience in the hallways too. If you listen carefully you can hear things breaking in the distance)

Totally understandable! Sorry if my vid brought back bad memories lol

The closet scene terrified me to my bones when I was a kid
