Stanley Bench Planes - the Y adjusting lever (or Yoke) and what to do about “Backlash”

  • This video covers the Y adjusting lever (or Yoke) on the Stanley bench plane - how to remove it, how it works, and how it takes its tea ☕️.
The video also covers BACKLASH (not to be confused with whiplash which is totally different but may annoy you in a similar fashion). Really it’s just a ploy to try n’ convince you to buy more plane parts!
Thanks for viewing! Thanks even more if you subscribe!

The most comprehensive assessment of y-levers and backlash causation I have ever seen. I was particularly interested in the Hock retrofit potentially contributing to backlash…..

Reed is making aftermarket hardware to help address backlash and thick blades. I don’t remember if I mentioned that in the video or not

I was about to say the same thing! That was hilarious! Regarding the hammer: you can also use a Bailey hammer, but your success will depend largely on both the year and the model.

    Hello, Michael;
Thank you for all you do & wishing you success.
I have a type 16 (I think) but it has a split yoke & a lot of backlash.
I 1st meet the plane over 50 yrs ago but I I didn't take to it till this year.
So I'm a newb & trying to learn.
Some great folks have already helped me get my #4 cutting.
It may not be 'right' yet but what do I know?
Its better than it was when I got it & I hope to tune it some.
I would *really* like to see some 'how to' videos, how to use it, tune it, etc.
I've got to review your entire channel & watch all your videos.
Because not too many folks seem to know planes like you do.
I'm more interested in green woodworking than regular, IYKWIM.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

We may be able to swap out that split yoke and replace the brass - that may tighten up some of that backlash

Great video and I appreciate the effort. I have a Miller's Falls (1970's?) with the laminated steel yoke. The hole is the yoke is much larger than the pin, so I put a bushing sleeve in to compensate for that slack. I cut a piece of aluminum foil from a serving tray (about .003" thick), then rolled it around the pin about 1-1/2 turns and super glued it to hold the cylindrical shape. Maybe I was lucky but after mangling the first bushing, I managed to assemble they yoke into the frog with the second bushing in place. I recorded it and plan to do a video. Thanks again for the great content.

Finding your channel gives me a little hope of maybe fixing up my grandfather's old type 3 Bedrock 608-C. I need to find a new frog though, since the upper corner of his is broken off and the lateral adjuster is missing as a result. Is that a part you might be able to find?
