Ha! I've never felt so appreciated for my cinematography 😌♥️ had a smile on my face watching through this. Would love so much to have more than a day to recce the location and plan camera & lighting next time 😆 But a joy to work on and practically zero budget does make you innovate (though I would love to have a bit of a budget to work with one day!) Props to the tireless cast and background helpers 🙌🏼
It is one whole take. He’s talked about it several times in interviews and community and instagram posts. It took them hours and hours to keep running it until they got it.
Yes, he joked about his poor friends having to keep doing the whole thing over when just one thing wasn’t quite right. It was 1 whole continuous shoot, no splicing.
Also, I think that last shot, going from a lit interior to a dark exterior, it took a second for the camera to adjust to the new light level so it was dark for a second as the camera adjusted.
A Sam & Ren interview focused on the video's would totally be amazing. And I think something Ren would be quite up to probably, for him the video's are a big part of the art and going further into combining videography & music is what he's aspiring to (see Justin Hawkins & Knox Hill interviews with Ren)
@jonathanhiller_ Just a note, in case you try to set up an interview: The videographer on Animal Flow wasn't his usual camera boss (Samuel Perry-Falvey, who did Hi Ren, Sick Boi and lots of others) but his other Brighton-based videographer pal, Luke Flegg, who is obviously also a major talent. Ren just seems to attract massively talented people into his orbit.
@@Parula06 Ren said on a post the other day that Sam is heading to Canada for a visit, I'm sure they will have quite a brainstorming session, the way things are blowing up right now
It's a one take video. Ren is obsessed with the challenge of shooting them. He also ups the challenge by increasing the number of participants with each new video. This took from 7pm until 4am to get the final take.
The genius to all of this is in the DIY nature of REN. In everything he does. The practical nature of everything. He goes into real detail speaking about this particular video on his live stream and in interviews and stuff…this was a one take shot (Ren signature), this was filmed in one day from 7am until 4am…they used his friends apartment to film this…they cut down actual plants from around the neighborhood to decorate the apartment…everyone in the video is a friend or a friend of a friend. Ren is just a creative genius and won’t stop until his vision comes to life…and the way he does it is so unique and REAL.
I would love to see your reaction to Ren's "the Tales of Jenny and Screech (full)" if you haven't seen it yet! it's 3 one take videos, ren and his guitar.
Agreed, I think there's so much to be analyzed in these three videos about the camera choreography choices, and camera-as-storyteller. Would love to see an in depth look!
He even joked about how the headlights at the end were a total cop out because they didn’t have the budget for real lighting…I think it actually improves it…but imagine if he got a budget? He mentioned in the Just Hawkins interview that his ultimate goal was really to direct…specifically some kind of musical/horror series for one of them streamers. Let’s hope Amazon it Netflix or somebody else takes him up on it.
The initial 7 rules from Animal Farm are on the wall of the first room (and in the video description), the walking stick and costume are a nod to Clockwork Orange, the tricycle in the hall is a tribute to the Shining, and there are numerous other references to Animal Farm in the video even though Ren said it wasn't really planned until they started setting up the location. There's never a dull moment with Ren 😀
I was just about to mention all of this. So many good Easter eggs in this one. Another great one was in the first room when the camera turns around, there are the dogs playing poker which was a nod to the painting "A Friend in Need" by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. Just an incredibly executed video.
@@SolidSkow And the fact that they hunted down the exact lamp used in “dogs playing poker” added both the gorgeous red color to the shot & an attention to detail for those familiar with the painting. So fun! 💜
He stands beside room number 5, a discordian number. The girls in the background have strings on their fingers, like puppets come to life. He's also incorporating aspects of Willy Wonka. Watch your step or end up on the serving plate.
Ren commented about this and said it was a one shot, filmed in his friend's apartment, and friends in the masks. Ren also said the concept is an homage to George Orwell and Animal Farm, going as far as to incorporate the 7 Laws on the wall in the first few seconds of the video. He said the video took about 9 hours to shoot, because they had to keep starting over, but it is an amazing vision and a shining testament to Ren's creativity. His visual game is fire.
Another great reaction! As someone that messes around in photography I've always been fascinated by all the ways one can be creative with light. So I always find your comments on lighting to be most interesting. I'd love to see your reaction to Ren's song Crutch ft Bibi, as the lighting throughout the video seems simple but is so beautifully done.
thanks for the reaction! Ren said on his twitch stream that this was filmed over a year ago in his friend's apartment in one take. they started filming (if I remember correctly) at like 7pm and finished at 4am trying take after take :)
Very interesting to see the video from a filmmaker's point of view. I've seen psychothrapists, psychiatric nurses, voice coaches, rappers, producers, poets, metal singers, guitarists, an AI and even a pastor react to Ren's music videos. It's great!
Neat breakdown. I loved how you picked up on how the lighting affects things and used great movies to highlight your points. The fact that Ren and Sam shoot most of their videos as one takes is amazing, or with the appearance of being one takes is so cool.

This is a fantastic demonstration of a brilliant, interesting and stimulating video that has been done on a tiny budget. A lot of musicians who’ve been in the biz for a long time bemoan the fact that labels are rarely willing to budget big videos in the way they would in the early MTV days. This is an example of how you can today, with skilled technicians create stunning art without needing a helicopter, a mountain top and a million dollar + budget. It’s not the money that counts it’s the determination, creativity and talent that makes it happen.
No no no, mom is wagging her finger. Ren is known for, and has explained it also, this one is a one-take. I´am sure it cost him a few friendships 🤣, cause they had no idea what it would take to help Ren in this video. Nothing hidden there, just Rens brilliant ideas and ambitions to do his longest one-take-video. I love to see it through your eyes. Hugs 🥰 from Denmark. Lene61/🇩🇰

Great analysis - so insightful and fun.. it's great to watch again focussed on lighting, cause this one is so JAM PACKED full of creativity that I hadn't got much beyond swinging lights (gotta push those each time they stop and re-start) and the black/ white pattern made with lights in washers and none in dryers and how the blue really lights up one of the kitty's eyes.🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
👍👍👍
could you do a break down of the music video for the song "Middle Of The Night - Ryan Upchurch." there is some really intresting filming technics they used to get some of the shots, for exsample in couple of the shots they used a set piece that made it look like a split screen of two different shots but they were the same shot just with a wall in the middle. anyways i would love to here your break down and analys of the video.
