Social media didn't exist back then duh. Durán used to trash talk a lot and was disrespectful, if socials existed back then no doubt he'd talk a lot. Mike Tyson tried to kill his sparring partners on the daily, theres plenty videos of it, imagine if social media existed back then, we would have even more videos of that
If thats Gervonta, his fans gonna be saying he beat up Duran in sparring. Watched some old sparring from Kronk gym recently also. Very respectful, there to learn and put in work.
Duran makes it look so easy. Damn he was slick. Just dancing, purring the jab, and using his footwork and head movement. His hands were like bricks also
Roberto Duran the legendary super fighter 🥊 he was just moving around it was light work for the camera even playing around you can see how masterful he was
The fight that garnered my respect for Duran was his title fight against Barkley. Too old, to small, gave away everything, yet showed that he also had great skill, and skills pay the bills. That fight reminded me of Pacquiaos win over Thurman. Old figter past prime, schooling a young strong lion.
It’s amazing Duran fought in the 90’s when he’s close to his 50’s, yet beat great fighters that are young and in their prime despite his age and already reached Father Time.
Boxing fans this is boxing sparring. Not the social media BS you see where dudes try to play tough or "expose" boxers they don't like or care for. You see his subtle movements and ring movement today they would say, "Oh, that's running." It would be a running meme after the match if he did too much moving working the angles and setups. Good jab parrying/slipping in this one. He saw the turns where he could've got clipped or rocked. Files it away upstairs - muscle memory. Light work. But it goes into the fight night collective. Thus the quality we saw from him was far superior than what dudes call boxing nowadays. Who they use matters as partners. Tomorrow he may shift and work on other parts to what he used in the fight against Ray like working out clinches, just footwork or setting traps, etc. I love this stuff. It's like weightlifting leg day or chest day.
People just don’t realize how good he was, after having 70+ fights and a hall of fame career at lightweight and then move up an stay competitive against younger bigger men for many more years is mind boggling
Can’t wait to get home and study this. Turns, small yet frequent body shots in the grappling, disruptive feints, lateral movements with and without jabs… 🤓🤓
Sparring I’d like to see but apparently might not exist in any fashion was Marvin Hagler working with the Weaver triplets in 1987 (Palm Springs). Marvin was starting to slow and occasionally looked poor and off balance. Lee Samuels (Top Rank) and Richie Sandoval (speaking in between rounds here) both mentioned this after Marvin’s fight with SRL.
The same yr he fought srl for 3rd time, he beat barkley earlier that same year. Night and day difference over the Duran that upset barkley and the lackluster fighter that lost to srl !!
Duran was too old and too small for Leonard, Duran did well in the first fight because Leonard knew this and tried to fight Duran one on one. Once Leonard realize he could not beat Duran, it was on to the races and Duran was not fast enough to catch up or strong enough to hurt Leonard with one punch. Landing more than one punch at a time was impossible for Duran because Leonard was a great imitator of Seattle Slew.
I absolutely hate watching Duran spar. Its almost pointless to watch. Any video i see of him sparring he is moving, dodging and not really throwing shit. I cant learn anything off him because its like he be toying with them just playing cat and mouse. Ill never watch another one again.
Man to think at this time Duran went 15 rounds with hagler , i think beat iran barkley, best sugar in 1980 came up short to Hearns, what a fucking legend also moved up since i think 125?
Great Great footage, Do you have Mayweather sparring Eric morales at Top Rank Gym? Oscar de LA Hoya any sparring or training, Golden boy, Thank you in advance Top class ™️🇺🇲💜🥊
Duran was way out of shape. You can see that a mile away. He was weighing almost 200 pounds. That’s a lot of weight to lose to get to 147. Can you imagine how starving you have to be to get to 147 in 3 month? No way!
Unfortunately Duran had lost his legs Leonard just kept him at bay with movement. Duran could still beat good fighters as long as they were not movers. The sparring in the video is all wrong for Leonard as he’s standing in front of Duran instead of using movement.

Omg he is literally the greatest fighter I've ever seen!!!
you ever seen Muhammad Ali bro?
Yeah I saw what he did to a better welterweight version smashed him from corner to corner 👍
Men love to watch 3 things 1.) Documentaries (e.g. historical or nature.) 2.) bushcraft 3.) A man working on his craft
4) T&A, bouncing.
Duran is effortless with his fluid moves.
Now you need a whole team to clown the sparring partner to boosts the other guys confidence. This is real professional attitude
Always a treat to see the legendary fighters spar, even if it’s light sparring.
