Kevin Rooney was who Tyson dumped at the advice of Don King. Rooney knew that Robin Givens was a mistake and not what Mike needed at that time in his career. Mike didn't like that very much and fired Kevin. Biggest mistake of his career! Had he not fired Kevin Rooney, he probably would have avoided the Desiree Washington scandal and never lost to Buster Douglas.

He got older and his values changed. When we are young, certain things are more important to us. The headgear protects from artificial damage such as cuts and bruising to some extent. It doesn't protect in any other way and especially not from brain damage of any sort. And to add to that it diminishes the pain of punches somewhat.
