for me 4 is still the better game the music was incredible, the story felt more fleshed out, and the sprite work I’d argue is the best on the PSX
but imo both games are still 10/10 so it’s not like you can go wrong with either

3 was better, if only for the fact I had a bug in 4 that kept me from playing the game past a certain point. I tried so hard back then, but at some point I gave up.

Breath of Fire 3 and 4 both excel in different areas. BoF3 is one of the greatest adventures where afterwards you truly feel like you went on a long journey with friends. BoF4 is a much better story but feels a little less personal and more on rails. I miss oldschool RPGs and especially this series.

Number 3 is important because it concludes the legacy that began in the first game, Number 4 happens in a alternative timeline and universe where Ryu is basically a God who was incorrectly summoned, leading to the happenings of the game, so both games are important.

I wouldn't say BoF4 is a better story. It has it's moments but BoF3 had a bigger awakening on the storytelling. BoF4 was kind of eh okay and I can see good elements in it. BoF 4 had a more Ghibli feeling to it.

BOF4 was an aesthetic masterpiece, I used to just sit and watch my brother play it all the time. The low-contrast visuals and less-chibi-than-usual sprites were just what I wanted to see at the time. With that said, I preferred to play BOF3!

BOF IV was my first BOF game. It made me fall in love with the series, but I know the superior game (Bof 3). What I liked about bof4 are Fou Lu….if you know, you know, the characters, the world, truly a gem. What I didn’t like was the map, the transformations, but most of all the CENSORSHIP. Breath of Fire IV was... tragic, from a behind-the-scenes perspective. It was planned to be the first game in a new trilogy. But then a new production team was put in charge of the next game and decided to 'take it in a different direction'. This 'new direction' resulted in them sinking the entire franchise.

I love 3 and 4. If I were to say one flaw about 4 is that the battle difficult always felt like it was set a tad too low until the last parts of the game. Like I had to actively avoid battles to keep the difficulty up at a satisfying level in my more recent playthroughs.

BoF 2 is a lot like 3, except you can feel that they were still trying to find their direction with this series and it is a bit hit or miss in places. BOF3 was my first PS1 RPG and the first RPG I ever played. I have a lot of love for that game. Nice graphics, great story and likable characters. I remember getting to the fight with Myria but I couldn't beat her, mostly due to my inexperience with this kind of game (Is she the final boss?). I remember picking this up on actual release day back in the day. I did enjoy it for a while, but ended up dropping it. Back then Squaresoft had the best JRPGs and BOF4 just seemed incredibly generic by comparison to anything Square was putting out at the time, so I ended up replaying Squaresoft games I had already beaten.

I think bof 4 is leagues better than 3, the story is more concise and darker, the characters are handled better, the overall flow of the game is smoother. While the dragon transformations were better in 3 I think 4 does everything else better than 3. Though I understand that the heavy eastern influences and the far jump from the more traditional high fantasy setting of the previous entries can be alienating to a lot of people. I really think 3 is more popular because it better fits people's idea of what they want from a jrpg than 4 did.

    • @veteran0121
      @veteran0121 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Leagues better? The game is a rushed mess and you can tell. People want to say Dragon Quarter killed the series but I say BOF4 killed it and Dragon Quarter was the excrement that was released from the dead corpse that was this IP.

Just beat this game. BoF4 was both a step up and a step down from BoF3 which I prefer.
The first thing that stood out to me was the atmosphere. It seems BoF4 has a strong East-Asian influence in its music, and architecture. It gives a very distinctive feel to the game. The Master system was an improvement in that you can learn their skills without being an apprentice to anyone, though you do have to fulfill certain requirements. My only major complaint is that the majority of the masters are not available until the latter half of the game instead of them being unlocked slowly throughout the story.
I liked the gameplay where you can swap characters during battle and the magic combo system is a great feature. However, I strongly disliked the fact that each character can only hold three pieces of equipment (weapon, armor, helmet/accessory). This is a huge let-down from the previous titles.
I was also unimpressed by the overworld design and the camera system like you said. BoF3 had the right approach as you can traverse an entire world map despite the overall world being somewhat linear. Despite being more expansive, BoF4 takes away the fun of seeing a "bigger picture" in its overworld design. Additionally, there were countless times when I tried to navigate tight corners and climb up/down ladders only to get stuck a few times. However, if I played the game more often, this shouldn't be a huge issue.
It seemed like Capcom wanted to cater this game to both new and experienced gamers. Novice RPG players would appreciate the simpler customization, overworld design and gameplay while more experienced players would have a hard time finding some of the best weapons and equipment.
Still, BoF4 is a great game, but is somewhat inferior to BoF3.

To me, 4 felt like a downgrade at the time(we are talking late 90s when it was released), though I played through the game twice because I convinced myself that the Yuna storyline had an ending where I could kill him and I made a mistake somewhere in the playthrough. The biggests demerits for me at the time were 1) the lack of visually different dragon transformations and 2)that the story didnt' feel like it really revolved around Ryu as much, but Nina and Cray(with Fou-lu on the other end). Ryu felt like a third wheel, and I didn't like that too much.

Lastly it exposed an entire community of gamers who claim to like the saga but won't accept changes to improve or sell an initiative. I wonder if capcom will decide to give breath of fire another chance, I dont care if they give them a different gameplay mechanic than turn based, or a different story/reboot. Not really I hated BOTH this one and the Previous 3rd game and that's only because the required MINI games that I found nearly IMPOSSIBLE For me to complete due to the timer where you barely have 1 to 2 minutes to complete those mini games.
That's why for Me the better games are the FIRST 2 but I still prefer the 1st game since Breath of Fire 2 takes TOO long to lv up the first game its too EASY to gain levels.

I played Breath of Fire IV back in the day, and while the story is "good", the characters are very memorable and the battle system is a LOT of fun ... there were also quite a few sour spots I definitely hated at the time (and even today still don't/can't appreciate), even if some of them are bit-part issues like the overly Eastern approach to its "dragon" creature design.
I have played bits of Breath of Fire III, and while it is quite charming the story seems a lot less clear, in ways both good and bad, and it isn't as mechanically polished as IV.

My vote goes to BoF3. I liked the characters better, you had more freedom to explore, the Dragon Gene system was awesome, the story made you ask several moral questions, it felt more like a true journey of discovery with loyal friends by your side, and I liked the fact that you went from childhood to adulthood, showing the characters growing and developing.
I have trouble liking BoF4. I don't like most of the characters, there is no freedom to explore, as everything is on the rails, the combo system, while cool, relies heavily on the characters' Agility to properly time them (plus it robs some staple elements like Lightning from the main magic list), the Dragon transformations are a letdown, the Master System is a bit more convoluted and complicated, there are too many mandatory minigames, the Fairy Village is bit of a downgrade, and the story isn't as thought-provoking as 3, feeling more like a "back to basics" kind of thing. The sprites and music are great, though, but a lot about it falls somewhat flat.
In my personal ranking, it ranks third, behind 3 and 2, who are first and second, respectively. 4 isn't bad per se, but I feel 3 far outstrips it.

BOF3 was better in every way. Can't really explain why. It just felt like more of an epic coming of age story/journey compared to BOF4. BOF4 felt rushed and the plot threads at the end are dark and ultimately anti-climactic. In other words, even though the game looks and plays good for the majority of the playtime it just ends up feeling unsatisfying by the end. I'm not saying BOF3's ending is that great, but I felt more satisfied when I finished that one.

Transformomg into a dragon was one of the core gameplay elements up until this game. I think that's why I didn't take to it the same as 1 2 or 3.
When you have a series going, and you strip out or water down a core element that gives a series its identity, you start losing me.
BoF3 will always be at the top of my list. BoF2 is a very close second place. I'd rank 4 down with 1. Not bad but not better.

its really a toss up to fans of whats better, 3 or 4. IMO 3 had better Dragon Transformations by miles, the actual transformations in 4 were kinda garbage but on the flipside, 4s combat with elemental field stacking and Dragon God breaths was pretty stellar. also 3 had a more likable cast of characters that each got their own real chance to shine. whereas 4's Antagonist Fou' lou was one of the coolest ever and being able to play the story from his perspective only added to the games depth. fishing was better in 3 but masters were better in 4. its really a toss up.

i prefer 4 due to its... vibe. I miss the gene system and the story was a bit unexplored lorewise. But aside from that BoF4 was just way more fun to me in nearly all other regards. I wish they did BoF7 in a similar way. get rid of the polygon models. keep it pixel art and make sure dragons are a core element of the story and not just obstacles you stumble upon.

Funny, Breath of Fire 4 is NOT among my favorite BoF games. I mean, I definitely prefer it over 5. But 1 and 4 are not games that I regard highly either.
2 and 3 are the best entries for me.
I still, thinkb4 it's a decent game, but I also hated the Fou-lu parts a lot, they bored me to tears, and I also hate Ryu's design is this game.
That said, I loved Nina's design, I still prefer Bof2 Nina, tho.
Most of the music in this game is also a hit or miss for me.

The only thing breath of fire 4 has over breath of fire 3 is it's story, and even then I prefer breath of fire 3's story since it more clearly fits in with story of the 2 prior games. Overall I think breath of fire 4 was a step down in the series with 3 being the highest point, of course 4 is still worth playing even dragon quarter is, point is why is breath of fire a dead franchise?
