Hands down the best. Capcom should really get on the ball with remaster. Look how much SE makes off of constantly reupdating/face-lifting all of it classics. They even did Chrono Cross. Capcom wont even give us a basic rerelease of Megaman Legends 1, 2, and Tron Bonne.

      2. Breath of Fire 2 or 4
      3. Breath of Fire 1
That's in my rating. Of course the gap isn't that large only between 1 and 2. Breath of Fire 2 has always been this incredible gem to me that I only saw on Nintendo Power as a kid until I was able to get the money to purchase it. Breath of Fire 4 was good on it's own right but didn't rival the epicness of BoF 3.

what ? the dialogue made this one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. The story in this game is positively beautiful, when you get to the end and realize the person standing there is teepo, man, the first time I played this my heart dropped. God I love this game I replay it once a year, with speed up, it’s 2022 you don’t need to play with slow text you choose to do that. also it’s pronounced “Ree-You” and “R-eye”

As someone who has only played the 2nd, it is one of my favorite rpgs of the era but I also feel that if you are not playing the game with a guide you’ll miss out on a lot of the content that makes it special and that can really hinder the overall exp jumping back and forth from games to guides.

BoF 3 is one of the few games that's perfect all the way thru for me, That includes the desert, So damn good.

Going into this game blind when I was younger, I so utterly blown away when you run into Rei again as an adult after the game had me convinced he was a temporary party member who died.
Still one of my favorite moments I've ever experienced in a JRPG, and glad I got to experience it spoiler free. And I personally really liked how long you remain as kid-Ryu in BoF3, it helped sell the epic shift when you turn into an adult and reach the main section of the game. It is also a big part of what sold the whole reveal that Rei was still alive to me. As that was quite a long time ago by this point in the game.

The dragon gene system in particular is super cool, and I was disappointed that it wasn't brought back for IV. One thing a want to say is at the start of the game they didn't want to kill Ryu, they wanted to recover the body to be studied since dragons were extinct, like finding a frozen Mammoth in current times, what they didn't know is that Ryu whas in stasis inside the chrysm thanks to Deys as explained later in the game.

Definitely my favorite of the series. There are some really funny parts in the kid section of the game, but also some pretty dark stuff like how the Nue Chimera died trying to protect its kids from you... not realizing that they were already dead from starvation. Or Peco's 'father' asking you to euthanize it. It's a savage setting, and Ryu arrives in it as a nude child before seeking to slowly make something of himself. There are a few annoying parts like the desert and having to train Beyd to fight Ziggy, but the majority is well-flavored JRPG fare.

The Things that stick out to me the most about BoF3 that I really liked was Ryu's Dragon Gene System, it was so much fun experimenting and finding the best combinations for the situation at hand. I think that was 1 of the Crowning achievements for BoF3.
The 2nd in my opinion was the Fairie Village, turning that humble shack into a thriving village is fun and fulfilling, plus your rewarded for it with some really good stuff.
The 3rd, I think that would have to be the Fishing mini game, if you commit to understanding/mastering this mini game you get some really good equipment.
The Things that I felt needed improvement, the 1st is the Master System, the master system had a flaw in it that I very much disliked and that was you get abilities after getting levels, so if you get to level 99 and you didn't find any masters (which I feel is extremely unlikely) or ignored them and changed your mind after getting to level 99 with every character your unable to learn anything from any master, BoF4 fixes this with you achieving certain goals for the masters to learn abilities.
The 2nd thing that I felt could be improved is making abilities learned from enemies more worthwhile, they just aren't all that useful, with some exceptions, it's more fun learning all of those moves then it is useful, especially in the end of the game.
I wanted to add a 3rd one but I just can't think of anything.
All this said, I love BoF3 so very much and everything that I didn't really care for didn't matter because of how well made this game is.

    Well doesn't that beat all!
    I love this game.
Edit: To elaborate, this game is just so solid overall. So many clever little additions, and nicely balanced. It may be a bit grindy in dungeons, but the overworld has no battling (plus that delightful fishing game). The individual characters' unique out-of-battle actions, and the camera rotation factor give a little something extra to exploration. The apprentice system is a stroke of genius; so great for character customization, and fun to discover. Each character has a neat backstory, and the overarching story is suitably grand; but the whole game has a really nice whimsy to the way it unfolds. The various towns are all unique and delightful. And the music---as strange as it is on the first play---is outstanding!
(I wish this was ported to Switch so I can play it again in comfort...)

I just beat BOF3 for the first time. The story and especially the gameplay were great and an improvement over the first two games. Unlike the first two titles, I didn't feel the need to grind that much save for the final dungeon. Though I was not a big fan of the overworld design being too linear, I did enjoy the skippable random battles. Even though I am OK with RPGs with high encounter rates, I think this design choice is a good idea especially for those new to the genre.
It seems like Capcom took some inspiration from FF6 which was released 3 years prior. For instance, the Master system in BOF3 was somewhat similar to the Espers in FF6; while you can simply switch between FF6 espers, you have to backtrack to the location of the BOF3 masters to gain stat bonuses upon leveling up.
As for the minigames, I actually enjoyed playing them a lot especially the fishing game where you can catch Manillos to purchase exquisite weapons and items.
I think the fact that certain dungeons that require you to have specific companions in your party is a big let down. Perhaps having some dialogue clues from NPCs would be helpful or make these sections optional for backtracking and exploration.
Another flaw that really annoyed me is when you have Garr in your party, he often gets stuck between people and in tight corners so many times because he is just so big. This makes me constantly switch party leaders just to get him back on screen.
The music in this game just rocks. It is definitely something I can listen to all day and not get bored. My only complaint is that the 1st overworld theme in BOF1 (Starting the Journey: th-cam.com/video/3IrsP6Kk1ts/w-d-xo.html) and the 2nd overworld theme in BOF2 (Breath of Fire: th-cam.com/video/d4c7f_4GuDo/w-d-xo.html), which are basically the same song, is not present in this game. Some might say that it may not be fitting or relevant for the story, but it could have been an opportunity for Capcom to introduce a very catchy and recognizable tune similar to Mario's World 1-1 and Zelda's Overworld Theme.
Overall, I thought Breath of Fire 3 is an amazing game and definitely one that I will be replaying many times in the future.

I've yet to play Breath of Fire 2 or 5 but of the Breath of Fire games I have Breath of Fire 3 is my favourite, Breath of Fire 4 is just a little bit too difficult and it genuinely disturbed me when I was young and that still echoes today and is the reason why bof4 isn't getting any uploads on my TH-cam channel rn despite it being a lets play I'm currently doing.

One of my favorite rpg’s of all time, except that desert…that I could do without. I remember playing without a guide and being lost in that damn desert for days strait. Imho it’s one of the best examples of sprite work in the history of gaming. They are so colorful and clean, not to mention expressive. 2 and 4 are wonderful too, but 3 will always be my favorite

This is definitely the best in the series. They finally got the dragon system somewhat balanced. In BOF1 it was way too overpowered and made the game easy. In BOF2 it was underpowered in an already difficult game. In BOF3 they tied the power of the dragon to how much AP it costs to transform and maintain. The system worked so well it carried over to BOF4.

You dang right its the best in the series. Best music, best COLORFUL sprite work (looking at you BoF4 with all your browns and muted tones). BoF3 has some hangups like Nina being borderline useless, heavy reliance on Momo being in party for unlocking a part of a dungeon that you wont find out about and have to redo it, Master system being hella aloof. But its the best and has the best fishing minigame in any JRPG (imo).

I cant decide between BoF2, or 3 or 4. All three of these are masterpieces, but I think BoF3 edges them out because it has the best aesthetics, world, and one of the BEST master and dragon Fusion systems. BoF2 shaman fusion was also amazing, but then BoF4 has Fou-Lu and Ursula so it gets tough again lol.

I saw the advertisement for this game in EGM and instantly became obsessed. I got it as my first RPG for the PlayStation and have been obsessed with the series sense. At this point Capcom has abandoned it and cares little for the fans. BOF6 was a cash grab that they could not be bothered to even bring to Western audiences before killing it's servers.

Fun game. Not my favorite RPG of all time, but still a solid good time to be had. I agree that the story dragged on at some parts of the game and it's a bit grindy at times, but that just makes it feel like it's part way between classic 2D RPGs and the modern ones with all the regular creature comforts that you've come to expect in a perfected formula. Kind of like a bridge in the gap between the two.
I get the music not being a hit with everyone. Some tracks are pretty forgettable to me, but there's still some good hits in there IMO.

My favorite ones in the series are 3 and 2, I think I prefer 2's story more, but I like 3's characters, gameplay, and music more. At the same time, my favorite incarnation of Nina (My favorite character in every Breath of Fire game) is the Nina from 2.
So, I have a hard time deciding which one I like more, maybe 3 just for a little bit.
I don't like the other BoF games much, tho.

  • @chaospoet

I only ever played this one (it's the only one I own) but I never finished it. I got up to (if I recall correctly) this part where you leave the Junk Yard area either while waiting for the boat or just after it and you have to do a fishing mini game. That was my problem with it. The annoying mini game/quest sections they shoehorned in. The worst being training Beyd. That almost made me quit right then and there. It takes way too long each time and brings the game to a grinding halt each time. I still have the game and my save file intact so I might pop it back in and finish it but we'll see. The sprite art however is phenomenal. That one boss enemy that's a giant eye was awesome.

Literally my favorite game of all time (followed by SotN and Chrono Trigger). I have lost count of how many times over the years I've played it all the way through. I love everything about it. The masters, learning enemy skills, the fishing, the faerie village, the music. All of it adds up to be my personal #1 game ever.
If only Capcom would pull their heads out and see the potential of the series if given to the right team. 3 was the pinnacle, and the franchise spiraled the toilet after it. 4 was a massive downgrade in just about every conceivable way. 5 was an unmitigated dumpster fire. And 6... Well, we don't speak of 6.

This was my goddamn childhood. I'm glad you enjoyed some parts of your review though I can't agree with everything you said. I do agree that Breath of Fire 3 was the Breath of Fire Magnum Opus, they're best game made. Breath of Fire 4 was nice and I never played Dragon Quarter they just didn't measure up to Breath of Fire 3. I found the dialogs pretty well done and entertaining. Not sure what you expected. The fact that it's more polished compared to the horrible translations from the previous installments also made it officially a better game.
It's sad that not many even know this game exists. It's a true hidden gem but it was ignored due to the Final Fantasy 7 hype. Breath of Fire series died sadly. I have been waiting for a Breath of Fire VI. And it's out... just some shitty mobile game.
They did a lot of amazing things after Breath of Fire 2. Masters, Dragon Gene system, Skill Examine Learning, Camping. Introduces many combat tactics to employ. Min/maxing etc. And don't get me started on that music. And the fishing was always iconic for Breath of Fire games, this was took fishing to the grand finale. The sprite animations and art was at it's peak at this time.

@@Xygor Another thing I forgot to mention the game is about 60+ hours of gameplay if you just go straight on it about over 90+ hours of gameplay if you want to do more and probably more than that if you want everything in the game. It was from a time where RPGs were demanded to have at least 60+ hours of gameplay and it truly delivered. That's not including the replayability you might do which I did multiple times. It's like a real adventure.
Best way to describe it was like it was a religious pilgrimage.

3 probably has the best battle system. the dungeons would have been fine if the game removed random battles. the music is overall good, but the game does have pacing issues (although 1 and 2 have some pretty bad pacing moments) and does have some annoying mini-games. the story does not feel so cohesive to the first 2 games as if there were plans to make it a sequel but ultimately was sidelined. it is supposed to be a sequel to 1, but its connection is very loose outside of the mural.

BoF2 was my first RPG. I would beat BoF 1 first tho, but BoF 3 for me is the best one. 4 comes close. Funny enough I got my first copy of BoF 3 because a Hollywood Video upon checking when I returned the game, found that it had already been returned. Game in hand and a poker face as best I could muster. I replied "Oh? Oh! Yeah, right, this must be a different game." and I just walked out thinking I had stolen a game lol
