The thing about Breath of Fire 1 & 2 (only ones that I have played) that kept me interested was the art styles, the way the characters interacted with the world, the variations of character personalities, and the smooth way that the characters (for the most part) moved through the story. They were just really well done games and it makes me sad that they don't get talked about a whole lot.

@@onceuponarevenant9409 The problem with it is it wasn't a Breath of Fire game really. You get ONE dragon form in Dragon Quarter, and if you use it your timer for finishing the game goes down rapidly (which feels like a discouragement to use it). For me, Breath of Fire was the game where you got to turn into different kinds of dragons. Then there was the trap and bait system that Dragon Quarter introduced, which I found SO annoying. Finally, the time limit thing just sucked. I wound up not even finishing the game, and I finished every Breath of Fire game before Dragon Quarter.

My first and favorite Bof game is the Bof 2. I love it and played it multiple times. The story had always made me cry and gave me heartbreak as a child. It helped shape who I am, to give it a stretch. The tragedy, the intrigue, the friendships, the hardships, the challenge, and the branching endings made me love it and play it over and over, with my main motivation is first, saving Ganer, which I completed when I, as I quote from my childhood, "Took the hard path to get to the heaven I sought". Then my next motivation is to see Ryu's sister again, which sadly still confuses me now as to what really happened to her. Though I somewhat came to the conclusion that the bat-winged thief was her, I still couldn't accept that they couldn't be together in the end. It's just too sad that it's either Ryu had to be a dragon and replace his mother as the guardian of the Gate, or live a proper life but endanger the world. It makes me cry even now, and the graphics didn't need any improvements since it was great for the time and the purpose it served.

For me the first game holds special nostalgia place in my heart. Back in the beginning of 90's we just got back our independence being previously occupied by soviet russia - so allmost nobody had game consoles or any western electronic thingies at home. Only frw had those "dendy" or asian NES knockoff consoles. So at one point here and there were popping up places where you could play games at the spot and also rent them. Only one place in our city was "elite" enough to also have SNES consoles and games. Back then I was just a 13 year old kid so I watched as a bunch of like 16+ year old guys would play the first BOF and for some reason it felt really interesting even though I couldn't understand a thing. Sometime later I got my own SNES and could rent it etc.
Long story short the BOF1 was the game that got me into RPG's in first place. Now decades later I'm still a gamer and I usually play through the first game around once a year.
Maybe its just me but even being quite simplistic the first games feels the best, especially the music.
Second game felt a bit too hard at times - the enemy difficulty climb was too steep in certain places so you really had to level up. Also second game had some obtaimable skills that needed specific decisions and requirements and you were gonna miss 99% of time these unless you used a guide.
Third game - obviously on playstation so the 3D graphics etc. was awesome. Also the characters being really unique was also cool. Had mixed feelings about not having sama type of random encounters on world map but overall was fine. Didn't like the genes system or more specifically once you got more specific genes they didn't have enough explanation what effect some of them have. So when playing blind you just sort of mashed them together randomly trying ti figure stuff out. The apprentice system was also meh - you only got some good stuff when you allready knew. Fairy village was also sort of difficult and to really thrive needed specific knowledge.
Played the fourth game briefly - never completed. Wasn't too sure about the washed out visuals. But now I'm thinking that I should boot up the duckstation and give it a new try.
Have not played 5 and 6 since it seems they have really derived from the previous games.

BOF5's Scenario Overlay System changes the emphasis of the game from beating the final boss to acquiring the Dragon Quarter Rating. This is done by beating the game several times, and shepherding assets and experience points through a couple of playthroughs to expend on scoring enough points on final playthrough to get the Dragon Quarter Rating. This Game is LOGISTICAL! Strategy and Tactics are nice to have to win battles, but they don't get the Dragon Quarter Rating.

I mainly played BoF3 and i absolutely loved it. I can also still feel the dissapointment of Dragon Quarter if i think about it. What the $@%$ was that?! I remember trying to keep playing it in the hope the open world would come later... but it didn't. I also remember being allowed to transform into a dragon had a limited time for the entire game(!?). So if you used all your dragon powers/time in the beginning of the game, that was it for the rest of the game. Maybe i was too young to understand the system, but i remember hating the game for not being anything remotely like the previous games.

I started out with the franchise by renting BoF2 at a local rental store growing up. I have always been a fan of Dragons since I knew what they were. So whenever a game like Breath of Fire or DragonQuest comes out Im happy. Over time and playing them over and over again via emulation, my personal ranking for all games excluding 6 would be.... 3,4,2,1,5. When BoF3 was released I was at the end of my 10th grade year. The Gene splicing system sold me and was a big jump from the summon-like system of 2. To have so my Dragons at your disposal blew my mind. Along with the Master/Apprentice and the Skill sharing, there was a lot more room to plan and customize. I would put 4 at the top but it is an upgraded version of 3 but the difference from 2-3 was far more impressionable for me.

I only very recently heard of this franchise but took interest in it, I enjoy the artstyles and am curious to check out Capcoms premier RPG series (aside from the MegaMan ones lol). Playing through the first one right now and having a good time. Also watching a playthrough of 3 (wasn't aware it's on PSP will check that out too) the story was dragging a bit before timeskip but is getting interesting now.

What a nostalgic series for me. I remember being bored after finishing FFIV and Secret of Mana, and being interested in the Nintendo Power ads for this when it came out. The dialogue in the first game was AWFUL (not due to a mistranslation; the Japanese version reads just as wonky.) I really liked the exploration mechanics and grew really fond of the series as a whole; I own every installment besides BoFVI.
Funny story, I used to teach English in Japan, and I taught this pair of four year old friends…. The boy’s name was Ryu, and the Girl’s name was Yua. They made me think of BOFII when they were in my class.
My favorite game on first impression was BOFII. The way the story worked was so interesting to me at that age, and I thought the shaman system was fun.

Breath of Fire desperately needs a new, well made game or a remastered collection of all of them. Yes, even Dragon Quarter. But this is Capcom we are talking about: their track record is enough to prove they would mess it up.

3 is my favorite, the dragon system and it being the final entry in the original storyline are reasons enough but it's also the first one I played. It took me awhile to actually find a copy of the 4th one growing up that the 5th one was already being talked about in magazines. I only played the gba 1 & 2 an both are great too so beside 5 they're all masterpieces in my eyes. 5s not terrible looking back I can see now good things they were trying to do with it but it's still the weakest title (6 does not exist!)

Awesome, but just a side note, that Wild Arms 3 is a Ps2 game, but the first two were on PS1. All are great games though. As for BoF series, good job on the coverage. I started with second game and it's definitely deep in my nostalgia brain. The second one was BoF4 and then I went to play the rest. It's really hard to pick one since every game had something that I loved but I'll say that 4th one is my personal favorite. I absolutely hate that Capcom left this great series to be forgotten...

For me, a good JRPG has to be done partly in 2D. A transition to a full 3D means they're entering a different subgenre already, action RPG or western RPG. I stopped playing most modern JRPG because of this. It just doesn't feel the same anymore.
Fortunately the trend of making a JRPG with 2D character model in a 3D world is gaining favour. With gorgeous looking games like octopath, project triangle, and eiyuden chronicles, it gave me hope to play again. 👍

  • @TheCrescentKnight

Well it turns out Breath of Fire isn't entirely dead.... yet.
See for the past two years Capcom has a digital card game called Teppen that is available on mobile which features characters from some of their most popular franchises as heroes and cards. You have Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and more. However, next month a new expansion is coming out called Dragons of War which features characters from Monster Hunter Stories as well as introducing Breath of Fire to the game.
The Expansion is basically centered around Breath of Fire III with Myria waging her war against the Brood. While they haven't spoiled that many BoF cards yet, it looks like we will get Ryu, Nina, Deis, Garr, Peco, Momo, and Myria as possible units with Ryu most likely becoming a new hero (either a completely original Hero, or a skin for an existing Hero). Also, the trailer for the expansion uses a remix of Battle for Tomorrow, which is all kinds of nostalgia fodder.
It's not a new game, or even a collection, but hopefully it will drum up some interest in the series. And if BoF isn't your cup of tea, other forgotten Capcom properties in Teppen are Strider, Okami, and Sengoku Basara.

I think I am more fan of the games separately than as a franchise, I don't like them all, but those I like, I like a lot.
Ryu and Nina are my two favorite characters in every entry, Ryu looks very cool in BoF3 especially, one of o the best protagonist designs in gaming, and Nina of BoF2 is overall there in my top 3 of favorite characters in gaming along with Tifa Lockhart and Jill Valentine.
BoF1: I think is good for what it is, the first one, awesome soundtrack, but it's not a game that I replay much, the story bores me, and the cast of characters is not much of my liking, I think that besides the music it hasn't aged well.
BoF2: One of my favorite in the franchise, and overall, a game that I really like a lot, unfortunately I think the soundtrack is not as good as BoF1, but the story is way more amazing, the Nina of this game is my favorite design and character wise, so Bleu gets to stay in Hometown sleeping for almost all the game. A good cast, with some forgettable characters like Jean and Spar (still, they have cool transformations). Also, it has the best endings in the franchise, IMO, just the random battles can be too much at times.
BoF3: Another of my favorite ones, amazing story, amazing gameplay, amazing music, and my favorite cast of characters. Also it has the best Ryu design in the franchise, the Accession mechanic, and the Skills and Master systems were good additions. My second favorite Nina in the franchise too, and I like her spells a lot (and giving her Mind Sword too). The big flaw of the game is every Raphala section, thinking back on it, visiting Raphala is always USELESS (and boring for me).
BoF4: I didn't enjoy this game as much, I don't like Ryu's design here, the colors and setting of the game feel gloomy and boring for me. I didn't like the combat system. I wasn't a fan of the cast of characters here besides Nina and Ursula, that said, the Nina of this game is really good too. Not a fan of the overall story, I am very angry with Yuna's ending, and also while Fou-lu's concept is cool, his playable sections bored me to tears. Fishing is a chore in thid game and the music is mediocre, it has a couple of good tracks and that's the end of it. As a positive I have to say they improved the Master system.
BoF5: What did they do to Nina here?
They took a risk with this game, I admire that, but personally, I didn't like it, not even a little bit, also the designs of the characters are horrible, some of the worst I have ever seen. There's nothing I liked about the game, and really...? Punishing me for using the Dragon Form in a BoF game? Making Nina Mute? (And her design is horrible). Forgettable characters, boring story, not my favorite gameplay either.
BoF6: I am curious if someone really liked this game. IMO is a disservice to the franchise.
So, that's why I said I am not really fan of the franchise if I analyze it, I truly only liked a couple of games, 2 and 3, still, I replay them from time to time, are overall in my favorite catalog of RPGs, and their protagonists are some of my favorite in gaming overall too (especially Ryu BoF3 and Nina BoF2 and 3).

I think the story and art direction of BoF3 are the best, no battle transitions and all that, the sprites are priceless, the minigames (at least fishing) is way better than the next one, the music and map and feelings of that game are just good even for today's standard. I only wish the party system was a little easier to get around like on the fourth game, being able to change the party anywhere would be nice. XD
Also, after years of checking on Capcom's work, I know for sure that if it's not the cheapest blockbuster ever, they won't do it. Resident Evil 2 Remake did well, they rushed Re3 REmake knowing people would pay for it. Megaman Collection did well, they rushed the X collection knowing people would buy, even if it sucks hard. And then, they go around and say "Oh no, no one wants Megaman anymore, because Megaman X collection didn't sell well!", oh yeah, if you ever did your job right, didn't split the collections into two AND gave us the best versions of every single game and not the "Emulated ISO files" as you did, maybe people would like it better!
And now even Dino Crisis, they decided to create that horrible thing called ExoPrimal, made every single DC fan angry with the tease with a character that looks like Regina but its shallow as hell, and when the game goes wrong, the message they will learn is not "Hey there, People actually want Dino Crisis!", no, it'll be "Oh no, no one wants games with dinosaurs anymore". Because Capcom is like this.
Most of the good content coming from them besides Resident Evil, are Fan Games re-makes or new games such as Megaman X Corrupted.
