  • Stephi bravely defends herself, but falls out of the nest. She was found dead at the bottom of the tree by one of the researchers who went out as soon as humanly possible to find out what had happened. WEB PAGE LINK www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/...

      That's cool. Every once in a while the unexpected happens. They're usually fairly similar in size, from the same family of raptors and both are vicious fighters who use their talons exceedingly well.

    They say Goshawks are bad ass but I never would have thought one would attack an eagle as large as Stephi. It doesn't look like she fell out of the nest. The hawk got a hold of her head and dragged her out. Amazing video of nature.

      I agree, she was pulled out because her talons were dragging the moss. plus you could almost see the goshawks claw for just a brief split second. Awwww I am broken hearted. She was so "beautiful", distinctive markings!!. But what I don't understand is, if it wanted her, why did it not take her after she was on the ground? I don't understand why God didn't make birfs like cats, always landing on their feet if they fall. Just breaks my heart.

    That's hilarious. She had big balls stepping up to the goshawk but it's pretty jokes that after all that she tripped herself out of the nest to fall to her death, probably 100ft and a broken neck. Long live the goshawk, and commiserations to Stephi the brave and big-balled eaglet.

    This eaglet didn't kill her siblling, it was the only kid in the nest. I watched it since it was an egg. Parents had to hunt very far from the nest and left Stephi alone. One time she managed to defend herself from the goshawk but two weeks later it returned and killed her.

      What about the goshawk? It doesn't need to eat or have chicks to feed? After all we are talking about birds here. For somebody to attach all kinds of emotions and feelings to a wild animal that they've never met I think is incredibly unhealthy and a little ridiculous. It's cool to like birds and admire them from afar. I like birds. They're definitely fascinating wildlife. But your comment kind of threw me off though with all the sappiness in it. Goshawks are accipitrids like eagles. I'm from the same family.
    In the forest they are unbeatable, no one can compete with them. They are dominant. A female goshawk is almost double the size of the male and this should be considered in fights with other birds of prey. A female goshawk calmly takes down a 6 kg hare. The world of birds of prey is this.

    Tragic, poor eagle..., but that`s wildlife - brutal. There are other videos where eagles kill a hawk. But what I don`t understand: There are so many videos where siblings are killed by other birds of prey. But parents know the danger, don`t they? Why can`t one part of the parents go hunting for the childs and sometimes for him-/herself while the other one keeps an eye on the siblings? And then they take turns... Can anyone explain this to me? Is it because of not enough experience as first time-parents? Or are they eating so much that the parents could not change?

    • @scyllabub
      @scyllabub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't explain it, Jo - it seems to me that the "intelligence" of raptors hasn't evolved beyond a certain level, and they perform as they have been programmed to, despite changing circumstances. But you do see variations of behaviour in the same species.
