No more two FREE stopovers. Now you have to pay 5k points each time. Same with US/Canada flights used to be 25k, but now it's up to 70k+ depending on the available seats and distance. Basically this new program is Air Canada's way of getting the customer to spend more points (money) for flights.
Thanks Ricky, really exciting news! With so many zone/distance based charts and dynamic pricing, it looks like it will take some efforts to find the sweet spots! I like the fact that they provide flexibility to add an one-way stopover for 5k, but it will cost more to do mini-RTW with multiple layovers.
Good overview of the new Aeroplan. Looking forward to your more detailed briefing on redemption 'sweet spots' and credit card strategies over the coming months. As always, appreciate PoT's expertise and clear explanations.
Me too! Since its COVID, credit cards are the main way of earning points for now. I have some videos on frequent flyer programs if you are interested, any support is appreciated.
The difference between the two CIBC Infinite cards will be interesting to see. I keep getting offered the higher card, but can't see the bonus in paying a higher card fee when I am getting basically the same miles/points. But a credit card that gives you the chance to earn Super Elite status just by using it for everyday purchases is very appealing as I use mine for work. At the end of the day the best thing about Aeroplan is using the points on other Star Alliance airlines.
As super elite member with AC i think we are getting screwed. I fly over 100K and i usually use my credit card and earn about another 200K aeroplan and that means 3 business class ticket to france from toronto with very little tax since i am Super elite but now for me to get that many points i must spend a lot more to get enough points to get 3 tickets. The new point system is good for people who travel less and now they have more seats available to them. Thank god there are more airlines beside AC.
Hi Ricky, wondering if you know Aeroplan did give ample notification about them suspending Star Alliance Upgrade Reward function until the end of 2021... and if you have heard it will cost more points to redeem.. Thank you!!
A flight from Toronto to the Maldives under the current program requires 100k points for a round trip. With the new program, it will cost at least 70k points for one way. If you're planning to do a trip it would probably make sense to reserve your seat prior to November 8 right?
Hey Ricky, really enjoy your videos! Is the reward chart that shows the 90% range only for DIRECT flights? Or if the distance between two destinations didn't have a direct flight between them, would the points required change with the addition of a necessary connection to get to the destination?
Yes, it's based on actual flown distance. if your actual flown distance brings you up to a higher distance threshold, then you'd need to pay the points for the actual distance you fly.
THANK YOU SO MUCH RICKY, Saved us a Lot of reading ! So this means we do not have to worry about putting 1 Aeroplan number down on all Family Credit cards now, it's like a pooled BA Account correct ?
It takes 37500 points to book an economy one way ticket from Vancouver to HK now. After Nov 8, it will take a minimum of 55,000 points assuming that they will not manipulate the seat availability. Your present points, after being carried over on Nov 8, will be worth 33% less. Now, you earn 3750 miles when you fly to HK. After Nov 8, you will earn 900 points since that's the average cost of the ticket. So, need to think about your should continue to fly on Air Canada internationally in the future because it will be very difficult to accumulate points based on flying unless you spend a lot on your credit card. I wonder whether this is a push for you to use your credit card more.
Hi Ricky, like many others have stated in the comments, Thanks for putting this together. We all appreciate the good work you do in breaking this information down. Just confirming one thing about the Flight Reward Chart. All points required are ONE WAY only correct? So return flights would be double the points shown for destinations listed?? Making sure I get this correct. Seems like quite a devaluation for most regions. Your thoughts please. Thanks.
Hi Laurie, yes all prices are one-way. It's a broad devaluation across the board with some new sweet spots sprinkled in. Here's what you should be booking before November 8: princeoftravel.com/blog/new-aeroplan-what-to-book-before-november-8/

So, book next summer now under current system, or wait until November to book? It’s sounding like a crap shoot. Thanks POT for video! I like your presentation style.
All depends on where you wanna go. Here's a comprehensive list of what to book before November: princeoftravel.com/blog/new-aeroplan-what-to-book-before-november-8/
TD's current rules state that you're eligible as long as you haven't opened an account in the past six months. CIBC has no terms. Amex terms say "once in a lifetime". None are consistent in enforcing these types of rules.
Thank you. I always found the system hard to follow. So I have Aeroplan points but they are not the same as my air Canada points. So how do I earn air Canada points as I never fly on paid flights. I always use my Aeroplan points for my bookings
What do you mean by “Air Canada points”? Do you mean status qualifying miles? If you never fly Air Canada then you wouldn’t need to worry about those, since they’re used for qualifying for status (which is only useful if you fly).
With the layover trips (say you want to stay two weeks at layover) do you have to book it over the phone and pay that additional fee? Or is there a way to book it online?
Yes, a stopover has to be booked online at the moment. Later in 2021 there will be an online functionality to book stopovers and more complex routings.
10,000 point signing bonus. Meh. Doesn't seem worth switching from RBC WestJet for me. I travel in Canada, the US and to the UK for vacations so WestJet works for me.
Yes, Aeroplan Diamond members will receive Aeroplan 25K status through 2021. If your original Aeroplan Diamond status were also valid into 2021, you’ll receive a bonus of 5,000 Aeroplan points.
HOW IS THIS NOT A RED FLAG!??!?! For someone who is Chinese and WE ALL KNOW LOADS of international students travel back to China during May - August, due to this demand, my aeroplan points for this period is practically worth nothing... Sounds like a massive devaluation and the only way to make most out of it now is to travel against high demand months/ location. Making vacation planning less flexible? Correct me if I am wrong..
i plan to go to turkey next year. for now, it would cost me $72.41 and 37500 points if my connecting flight is turkish airlines. so it appears to me that it is better for me to book before nov 8. after nov 8, it would cost me the flat $39 booking fee plus tax and fees and 40000 points. am i right ???

Long-haul North America flights are definitely being devalued. Here's the full post on what you should book before November 8: princeoftravel.com/blog/new-aeroplan-what-to-book-before-november-8/
I applied for the AeroplanPlus last December before Amex pulled it. You think it'll carry over to the new program? Or will it convert to the new base card?
Interesting... I really need to see the change to believe it. First , The system transition we had last year was simply put : HELL. And that was a change under the same name & everything else. I have very low expectations for the performance of this new transition. Web side of things was horrible and we had so many set backs at the contact center. Second. Your right, you can book right now and take advantage of what we had today, but again based on the previous transition, good luck making changes to your reservation later! It will indeed be possible but it will be difficult if we have to transition yet again to new systems. It doesn't handle schedule changes well neither. Last, availability. Previously even market fare didn't give you every seat, even doe some were still available, there was always a limit to where you could push it. So there will always be SOME form of capacity control, even if much less strict now going forward. I know they have been working on this for a few years but it still feels some what rushed. I wish they could have waited another year to perfect everything. ESPECIALLY the tech side of things, they promised EASY transfer to the new system last year and unfortunately, it wasn't the case... All I can do, is hope for the best. And I say this as an Aeroplan Employee.
Nice to hear from our Aeroplan employee in the house! Yes - if you book before November 8, you won't be able to make changes afterwards under the old rules. You'll be subject to the new charts, prices, fees, etc. I share your concerns about the tech side. I, too, will believe it when I see it - but I remain hopeful!
Really disappointed to see the disappearance of the fuel surcharge. It was one of the advanced features that made booking with Aeroplan so compelling as it scared away the FOTSG travellers who couldn't figure out all the hacks they needed to get rid of YQ leaving the award availability open for us in the know!
I stopped using aeroplan years ago, bought a few gift cards to use up the points. Aeroplan became so difficult to use it wasn;t worth the frustration, I have a CIBC Adventura card so I can fly any airline. Also the aeroplan staff were very rude and not helpful, the only reason Aeroplan is coming out with these changes is because they lost so many customers I still have the aeroplan card, but doubt I will ever use it again. .
I don’t know about this new rewards program. I got 500k miles and it sucks I can’t even use them before November 8th(COVID-19) otherwise I would use them all before then.
Susan, I don’t have to use them before November 8th but with the pandemic I won’t risk flying anywhere. After November 8th the new guidelines will come in effect and to me it’s not as good as we have them now. I’m just saying.
This new system will earn you less points and cost you more to book, Aeroplan was always a terrible program and that won't change, the whole thing will be too complicated and won't be user friendly, people shouldn't be fooled by this new program, same old, same old!!
100% correct. Right now I have the American Express Aeroplan Platinum Card. Now I will be switched over to the Amex Aeroplan Reserve card...and it will "only" cost me $100 more per year. On top of that, with the old Platinum Card, If you spend over $25,000, you would earn points at 1.25 : 1 and if you spent over $50,000 per year, you would earn points at 1.5 : 1. Now, you only earn points no matter what at 1:1. And to top it off, it looks like that flights will cost you more to book. So......let's see. The Card costs more, don't earn as many points and flights cost more points. What's the benefit again?
I forgot to mention, anything Air Canada and Aeroplan do is for them, they have always had the worst customer service You can count on this program being worse than the last. They gouge you anytime they can! No one is currently flying and the prices are still very high inside Canada, they are only competitive when they have to compete with carriers outside Canada. I say let the US carriers in, and watch A/C prices drop, by the way West Jet is no better.
Canuckistan has always been One-airline country, comrade. You don't need to fly on pigdog capitalist Westjet or use suspicious international partner, if you must, please donate to Party and don't forget to have United Aeroplan Revolutionary Card in pocket at all time during international travel. We want to know where you is and how you flying.
Don't know what I would do without ya, thanks RIcky!

Does it cost the same number of points to take 2 transfers (through the same Aeroplan booking) as it costs to take a direct Aeroplan flight?

Do you think it’s worth cancelling your credit card and resigning to have the bonuses they will be offering?
I think that strategy is more likely to help than hurt. As a current cardholder you definitely wouldn't be eligible for the new bonuses.

Thanks but your trip examples are one way only so Asia from Vancouver return is roughly 180,000 points for business class?

I forgot to mention, anything Air Canada and Aeroplan do is for them, they have always had the worst customer service
You can count on this program being worse than the last.
They gouge you anytime they can! No one is currently flying and the prices are still very high inside Canada, they are only competitive when they have to compete with carriers outside Canada. I say let the US carriers in, and watch A/C prices drop, by the way West Jet is no better.
First
Canuckistan has always been One-airline country, comrade. You don't need to fly on pigdog capitalist Westjet or use suspicious international partner, if you must, please donate to Party and don't forget to have United Aeroplan Revolutionary Card in pocket at all time during international travel. We want to know where you is and how you flying.
What?
