Douglas Murray and Kevin Spacey: what Shakespeare can teach us about cancel culture | SpectatorTV

  • Douglas Murray introduces Kevin Spacey’s recital of a scene from William Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens. His performance was part of an annual series of free lectures in honour of Sir Roger Scruton, hosted in the Sheldonian Theatre at Oxford University.
'In an era of cancellation and defenestration we sometimes forget that we both cannot go on like this and that we have been here before. We know this because our greatest writers and artists have addressed this question in their own times. When Roger was going through his own battle with the shallows I often thought of Shakespeare's rarely performed but great play Timon of Athens. Timon has the whole world before him. He is surrounded by friends and admirers. He is generous to all. Yet he falls on hard times and when he does absolutely everybody deserts him. He is left with nothing and nobody, and risks being filled with despair and rage. It does not help that he is shadowed by the cynical philosopher Apemantus, who has warned him that just such a desertion might occur.'

I've spoken with a number of people about their thoughts on Mr. Spacey, and explained why I've moved past the accusations against him and come to appreciate his work again. They're honestly shocked by this, and don't care that he's been found not guilty in every trial. To them, he is guilty by reason of accusation, and that is sadly a state of mind I see with increasing frequency. As for me, I'm glad to see him again. I was always a huge fan of the man's work.

Well done, Douglas. I'm assuming that you were responsible for Mr. Spacey's appearance at this event and I thank you for that. Someone who has been acquitted at every public forum in which he's defended himself deserves an opportunity to re-enter society. Kevin Spacey did not run away from the mass of accusations and hugely noisy prurient media outrage, as he might have done, to the US or elsewhere. He chose to stay in the UK and go through due legal process. He did this with much dignity. Found innocent, he deserves to refound his career and be successful again.

Maybe you should more differentiate, hm?
Yes, cancelling someone based on accusations alone is wrong.
Being aware of structural racism and discrimination and fixing this (which being woke simply means) is not wrong. It is vital! But to those, who are not Women or Gay, Trans, Inter or simply Bi, to those who are not People of Colour or Asian, to those this is an effort, because they are not affected by discrimination or racism.
So if you are against being woke, you might want to look closer, because what hinders those with the stronger arm, to discriminate against old people soon? And then, one day it might be you, who is discriminated against.

Dear men: we live in an "Accusation" culture just as much as "Cancel" culture. I have been falsely accused by two women thus far (and I'm not even rich or famous) and both cases were dismissed without trial because of the overwhelming evidence in my favor (chat transcripts, videos, photos, contradictions by the accusers, etc.) and I have sued them both for false accusations, attempts to defame me and repeatedly lying to police. It's not easy being a man these days. That is why I always take Screenshots of conversations, Archive chats, even take photos/videos often when I am with women while they are leaving, just in case I am accused again and I need to show my phone to police.
This safe keeping of conversations/photos/videos saved my ass on more than a few occasions.
And to those fools who say "false accusations are a tiny percentage of majority of cases" I say: how the hell would you know? On what evidence do you base this on? On convictions? Convictions are not proofs of guilt. Mike Tyson was convicted of rape and sent to jail and I am convinced (although I cannot prove it) that Tsyon never raped anyone in his life.
"False accusations are a tiny percentage"
    Really?
    Ronaldo was falsely accused.
    Neymar was falsely accused.
    Justin Bieber was falsely accused.
    Johnny Depp was falsely accused.
Russell Brand has been falsely accused.
    Julien Assange was falsely accused.
    Donald Trump was falsely accused.
And the list goes on (and these are the famous cases. The vast majority of cases--such as my case--are unknown).
Why SHOULDN'T PEOPLE falsely accuse others, if the Penalties for falsely accusing someone are non-existent, barring a confession from the accuser?
There is plenty of incentive to falsely accuse someone and very little consequences to face if the case is dismissed and the accuser provably lies multiple times to police.
Most people believe it is a crime to lie to the police. Guess what? It isn't! I PROVED with physical hard evidence that my accusers LIED to the police. And so far, no consequences have been faced by either of them. But I am going to continue my battle to stop this from happening to other people! False Accusers need to receive SERIOUS penalties!
I am not ashamed to talk about this with people. Even girls I am dating. Yes it is taboo. Yes, even being accused, makes people automatically feel like "there must be some truth to it otherwise why would she accuse him...?"
Here's the answer: if the consequences of immoral behavior are minimal, why not continue?
If a false accuser does not suffer any consequences beyond a couple of police interviews, and uses an entire organized police and court apparatus to intimidate you for months and sometimes even years, and doesn't have to face consequences for lying or being misleading in her statements, WHY SHOULDN'T he or she falsely accuse you?
Most people are poorly educated on this topic because they falsely assume that these accusations are so rare, that when they do happen (as in public media circuses around celebrities or powerful famous people), people just assume there must be some truth to it.
Guess what? Women lie. Women cheat. Women manipulate. Women can be vindictive and hateful and vengeful. Just like men. They are not the "special sex" exempt from "lies and deceit."
And this is increasingly becoming weaponized against all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons.
A good friend of mine was jailed for 1.5 years because of a False Accuser. He is now constantly paranoid about it happening again because of the silliest reasons. If a woman rejects him he already is worried she will accuse him of something.
It's sad and disgusting that genuine victims of crimes have been overrun by the Accusation Brigade, just as genuine victims of racism or many other real social justice issues have been overrun by fake victims of invented crimes. Everyone is nowadays opressed and supposedly a victim of some as-yet-to-be-invented oppressor.
My experience with genuine victims of sexual and physical crimes is that the majority of real victims still don't report their experiences to the police.
It is a sad and alarming truth to tell you that if someone comes forward with an accusation against someone (especially if it is high profile), it is likely a falsehood.
Unfortunately, most real victims never come forward and don't even tell their friends/family about it.
And further, vindictive and spiteful people abuse the justice system to make a mockery of actual victims.

The inability to separate the Art from the Artist that so many have is just ridiculous. I don't care what someone does, is accused of doing, was acquitted of doing, convicted of doing. It has NOTHING to do with my enjoyment of their artistic output. Everyone makes shitty choices, does shitty things, hurts people in one way or another. If i had to choose my entertainment based on being a good human being AND I knew the true soul of each person - I'd probably not have a book, music, a painting or anything else I could enjoy. EVERYBODY SUCKS IN SOME WAY
