I’ve always felt like they had a lot of the right ideas in place for the Ghost Rider movies. A lot of the action scenes in them can actually be pretty exhilarating. The main problem was that the creators couldn’t decide whether the movies were supposed to be cartoonish or serious. They should’ve either made it dark and/or featuring black deadpan comedy (think Deadpool without the meta humor) or exaggeratedly over the top like in “The Mask.” It failed when it couldn’t find the right balance between the two tones. And yes, I totally agree that Nick Cage wasn’t the right fit for the title role. He just came off as awkward and unsure of what exactly he was supposed to be doing.

There was a video of Cage yelling at a producer at a European nightclub, likely about his pay or involvement in the film that was posted online. Not sure if it’s still around, but looking back, it seemed that Cage was getting short handed while working on the film which is why he passed on wanting to do a sequel, and possibly, passed on appearing in Deadpool and Wolverine. This is an extremely important take in today's superhero movie pandemic. Not everyone needs to be the star of the show. You need secondary characters. There is a reason why some heroes are a lot more popular than others, other than marketing.
The mcu was a lot more organized when you had iron man, Thor and captain America at the front, with black widow, hawkeye, hulk etc taking a backseat. Sure hulk can lead a movie (I think ghost rider too) but he doesn't need to. And you have to compromise and make choices that make something good entertainment and a good film.
Another example, maybe the wolverine was too big in the 2000s movies, but it's what worked for the story. Maybe rogue, storm, iceman etc should've been bigger but they work FINE in support.
Now they're making movies for every comic hero ever and wondering why it flops.

Ghost Rider is a character with immense cinematic potential, yet previous live-action adaptations have struggled to fully realize what makes him so compelling. While Nicolas Cage is a talented actor and a passionate fan of Ghost Rider, he wasn’t the right choice for Johnny Blaze. His age at the time, combined with an inconsistent Southern accent and over-the-top mannerisms, made his portrayal feel more like a quirky interpretation rather than the tormented antihero that fans know from the comics. Cage’s performance, while entertaining in its own way, ultimately contributed to the films’ identity crisis, as they failed to decide whether they wanted to be dark supernatural thrillers or campy action flicks.
That being said, the Ghost Rider films weren’t without merit. Spirit of Vengeance had moments of impressive visual flair, such as the sequence where Ghost Rider takes control of a massive land excavator, showcasing his supernatural abilities in an inventive way. The film also attempted to lean into darker, grittier horror elements, which fit the character far better than the overly polished and inconsistent tone of the first movie. However, both films suffered from a clash of tones-switching between horror, action, and even comedy-making it difficult for audiences to fully invest in the world of Ghost Rider. The character thrives in a setting that embraces supernatural horror with a heavy-metal edge, similar to The Crow or Blade. A proper Ghost Rider film should be R-rated, allowing for the full extent of the character’s vengeance-fueled brutality while maintaining a serious, atmospheric approach.
For a successful reboot, the film needs the right combination of an actor who can embody Johnny Blaze’s tortured yet rebellious nature and a director who is passionate about the character’s mythos. Some strong candidates for Johnny Blaze could include Norman Reedus, whose rugged, road-worn demeanor perfectly matches the character; Garrett Hedlund, who has the right mix of charm and intensity; Charlie Hunnam, who could bring both grit and emotional depth; or even Jensen Ackles, who has long been fan-cast for the role and could deliver the perfect mix of swagger and darkness.
As for directors, the ideal choice would be someone who understands horror-action filmmaking and can bring a strong visual style to the project. Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, Sinister) has a background in both horror and comic book films, making him an excellent fit. Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) could bring a more visceral, tension-driven approach. Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Planet Terror) could embrace the grindhouse aesthetic that suits Ghost Rider’s outlaw nature. Even Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, The Invisible Man) could craft a grounded yet intense take on the character.
Beyond Ghost Rider, studios should take more risks on lower-budget horror-driven projects in general. Films like The First Blade, Logan, and Joker have proven that superhero stories don’t always need massive budgets to be successful. A well-crafted Ghost Rider film doesn’t need excessive CGI or spectacle-it needs a compelling story, great direction, and a commitment to the supernatural horror elements that define the character. If handled correctly, Ghost Rider could finally get the movie franchise he deserves and become a standout figure in Marvel’s darker, more mature storytelling.

I'd love to see a modern take with the Ghost Rider. I think the character has so much potential for an exploration into themes of faith, guilt, and redemption. Combine those elements with supernatural horror and action. That's a winning combo by itself. I'd love to see Guillermo del Toro do a take. He finds humanity in every "monster" or outcast.
As for casting, my top choices would be Austin Butler, Jeremy Allen White, Christopher Abbott (a more seasoned Ghost Rider), and Charles Melton - all actors more than capable of portraying the pain of a curse while struggling to retaining their humanity. Hopefully, whatever creative team does bring another Ghost Rider adaptation to fruition continues to bring respect for the source material and goes all in for some solid horror action

Think the other big issue with Ghose Rider is that well he is overpowered, the moment he transforms he is immortal, can possess anything and instantly kill everyone and everything… pretty hard to make a feature length movie, let alone a standalone franchise on TV with that premise.

The first movie was just goofy for all the reasons outlined. Although it had its problems, I have a special place for Spirit of Vengeance because of the visuals, and because the premise of the story was a big improvement. Also, having the rider in your brain trying to get out is probably going to turn you into Nic Cage, so I didn't mind the performance.

Robbie Reyes getting the love he deserves over Nic Cage's version was not on my 2025 bingo card. Everyone gassing the 2000's era of super hero movies seriously needs to go back and watch how F tier they were. They had their moments, but they DO NOT HOLD UP. Nostalgia blindness is so weird for its hold over people who can't let go and enjoy the new.
