Brandon that’s a UK poster so the X was normal for the time! In the 50s and 60s, it was par for the course for monster movies, no matter how cheesy they may seem now, to get an X in UK. But it meant no one under 16 could go see it. The X was abolished and replaced with 18 certificate in ‘82 precisely because of the stigma porn placed on the X as a symbol. Great review as always though, man!
Precisely, The ratings started as U and A, then H was added, H was renamed to X after one year, then A got split in half to A and AA, so by 1982(pre-rename) the ratings were U, A, AA and X, they were renamed U(U), PG(A), 15(AA), 18(X)

In high school I found a book with the same name and read it. It was about going to Mars but it was the plant monster that was the intelligent life forms: all martians were different types of plants and that particular one was the enemy and it did try to eat one of the humans as it was from a carnivorous species but the human was rescued at the last minute. Then some disaster struck and they had to leave. They did try to bring one of the friendly plants back with them but it died due to the G forces of the lift off. It seemed to be a children's book as no humans died in it.
I'm shocked Colonel O'Bannon wasn't a better leader. After all , he's got experience voicing Reed Richards AND Green Lantern, so this planet shouldn't have come as a big surprise to him.
when I got this movie a few years ago, I was surprised and happy to see Gerald Mohr in the flesh for the first time. He did a lot of old time radio shows in the forties and fifties, and is probably best known as the voice of Philip Marlowe. Though he shows up a lot on The Whistler too, playing a variety of heels, heavies, murderers and the occasional good guy.
Does anyone know if there was a version of this done in normal color? Or maybe a remake? I swear I remember seeing that jelly monster in a movie when I was really young, but I don't remember it being all washed out and red. It's weird, I clearly remember the spinning eyeball and seeing the guy inside it after he gets eaten.

I've been watching your reviews for the last few years and this one has maybe my favorite post-credit clip so far!
I loved this film as a boy (and I mostly saw it in b&w, thus in half-Cinemagic!). Still, I was always SO psyched when it was on. It's a solid good time on Mars!
I like Iris a lot, I like Dr. Quest, I like the Jay Leno character, I only (even as a child) hated the Captain, who uses what I call "handsome acting", even though he's not all that! Still, it's a fun and atmospheric ride (great musical score as well).
