Both Iphone and Android have an app for "The book of Psalms for Worship" that includes words only, words with music and also plays the tune for those of us who can't read music.

As a Southern Baptist I am so burnt out on the vapid contemporary music in our services every Sunday. I literally dread the first half of every Sunday morning because of it. Singing the Psalter would be so refreshing!

Singing and chanting the psalms is a huge part of Protestant worship both at home and at church. Everything from Confessional Lutheranism and Anglicanism to the Puritans and beyond- all of these camps used the psalms in their worship.
The psalter is better than any hymnal or “worship band”!

As an Orthodox Christian, who has psalm chanting as a core foundation of every worship service, I am glad to see psalmic prayer being taken up by various protestant traditions

I have a couple of Orthodox Psalters/Prayer Books. My favourite is the HTM edition - but they are all good!!

its more about reading and foremost singing the Psalms of David. Like Luther said, singing is twice as praying.

I recently went to a Woman's Retreat and part of the speakers focus was on singing Scripture and the importance of it. Happy to see this video.

Thanks for making this video and sharing this information. I've been interested in singing more of the Psalms and this is a way to sing all of them. I'm impressed.

I have a copy of the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal that has a lot of paraphrased psalms for singing. There's also a few from other hymnals I have that I like. A few are classic enough that you'll find them almost anywhere, like "The Lord's my shepherd, I'll not want" (Psalm 23, from the 1650 Scottish Psalter) and William Kethe's "All people that on earth do dwell" (the Old 100th). Isaac Watts did a bunch of more paraphrastic renderings; perhaps the most famous of these is, if you can believe it, "Joy to the World"! Another good one is "I'll praise my Maker while I've breath", based on Psalm 146, and written by Watts and revised by John Wesley - whose favorite hymn it was, set to the old psalm tune "Old 113th".

I recently purchased a copy of The Psalms Of David, translated from the Septuagint Greek by Donald Sheehan (WIPF and Stock Publishers). I'm really enjoying it as part of my daily devotional reading. I would recommend it.

Great video, Pastor Matt. In Reformed circles there seems to be a rediscovery of the Psalter but wider evangelicalism would do well to take up and sing! In addition to these fine products, there are several nice editions of the Scottish Psalter available. For those who like KJV English and don't know a lot of tunes, I believe all the psalms in this particular psalter are set in common meter, which means you could sing every one to the tune of Amazing Grace or other very familiar hymns.

TH-cam is great for looking up the tunes that go with a particular psalm...there are also psalter apps out there that play mp3 or MIDI files of common tunes.

I wish our church sung Psalms. I've never really don't it, and didn't even know that it was being sung by some churches until a couple of years ago.
But u must say, as a musician, I wish that they had their own music, and not borrowing from a different song.

These pslams are set to specific tunes to make it easier to pick up. Christian groups with an older musical tradition like the orthodox, roman catholics, and some anglicans, use chant to recite the psalter musically. Greek Orthodox Byzantine chant, of which you can find high quality english videos on youtube by Boston Byzantine Chorus, is particularly haunting

If one is not part of a psalm-singing congregation or even a hymn-singing congregation (for example, in the Book of Psalms for Worship, I wouldn't know what tune is meant by "ELLACOMBE CMD"), but wants to sing the psalms in private, what would you suggest for resources?

Clearly. The psalms have been sung since the time of King David 3000 years. It is disappointing that you do not mention the Reformation and the Reformers return to the use of the Psalter in the language of the congregation. Calvin translated the psalms into French around 1538. Well done for mentioning the regulative principal. Also. The text you quote about psalms hymns and spiritual psalms. These words all appear in the Psalms themselves in the Septuagint, therefore these words reference the psalter only. It was hundreds of years later that hymns were wrongly introduced into public worship probably in Italy. Also the old Scottish psalter is far better than those you cite. Love and best wishes in Christ. Andy

I'd like a bible with the regular psalms replaced with an end-rhyming psalter. But maybe that would be a desecration of God's word. So nevermind 😇
