When 'Clean Eating' Becomes Unhealthy

  • The benefits of going to the gym are immense, but in this video we look at what can happen if things go too far.
    If I could have made one video to show my 14 year old self, this is that video.
    I actually made the first version of this video 4 years ago, but I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out, so put it off as it does make me look a moron.
    I’ve kind of danced around the topic in each video but if even 1 person can learn from my mistakes/ start following some of the channels mentioned then the video was 100% worth it.
    Its important to note that while this video is focused on the mistakes I made. I also did a lot right and I no longer think the way I did.
    The main point of this video is that I assumed getting lean and looking physically fit was the same as being healthy. My definition of health (as a naïve teenager) was way off and I did a lot of things for the wrong reasons.

      @@VIIStardust I’m 15 and I’ve been doing basketball and swimming for around 6 years. Decided to go to gym and in around 3+ months I got results which are around the same as his. I’m planning to keep it natural and cut out more unhealthy food to get better results. I’d recommend going to gym cause not only you look better, you’ll also look at life in different way

      Friend of mine in my judo club is strong as an ox, he has obvious muscle physique but he is a bit chubby, he is competing in heavy weight, very good guy but he is insanely insecure, never went to a beach with us, over summer he prefers hoodie and shorts because his legs are well defined but he has a belly. When we try to talk to him telling him he looks decent and theres nothing to worry about, he says "Teddy Riner is 100+ but all muscle" its sad that everyone knows at least 3-5 people whos lives are damaged by comparison to standards somebody pined for all of us..

      This dude looked better then 90+% of people, serisously. And he was into running - why the fuck would you need a massive Chest and Biceps for that? Legs as well - a dyclist needs to have some conciderable force to push trough elevations. A runner not so much.
      And being "skinny" certainly is better then being fat. He propably still had more muscle then the average guy who doesn't have a Six Pack, but rather a fucking barrel on the belly area.

    As a girl who recovered from anorexia in 2017, I was interested in watching this too see what a male perspective would look like. I was genuinely shocked at how similar our experiences were (with the exception of the goal as I misguidedly believed getting skinnier would make me a better cross country runner even though I was already very lean). It really drove home the idea that eating disorders are not gender specific and no one gender should feel like their experience is invalid. Thank you for sharing and I wish you the best in your health.

      @@whatever7338 still an eating disorder, which is actually pretty similar to anorexia: orthorexia, as stated in the video, is an eating disorder caused (quite ironically) by an unhealthy obsession with health, while anorexia is an eating disorder caused by a heavily distorted body image. Both, if not properly taken care of, can lead to very unhealthy eating habits that can have very serious concequences for your health. To the original commenter, I'm glad you were able to recover and I hope you're now living an healthy life. The sad thing is that body dysmorphia is recognised disquietingly often as exclusively a "female" problem, when it's just as bad and just as common for men, only that women usually aim to become unattainably skinny, while men usually aim to become unattainably muscular. Body dysmorphia really is a problem regardless of gender and I hope everyone affected can overcome it sooner rather than later.

    My brother got deep into bodybuilding and fitness when he was a teenager. That graduated into a full on eating disorder as he got more obsessed. That was back in the early 2000's, so that all happened without the overwhelming amount of shit on social media, I've not idea what would have happened to him if Instagram was around back then. I really sympathize with young guys and girls who get consumed by body image because I've seen where it can lead.

      I had a friend who also got deep into bodybuilding, like unhealthy deep into it. He use to have a really hard time concentrating and sleeping, he would routinely skip out on trips with us and group gatherings because he was cutting weight at the moment.

      As a female who got into fitness and diet I really relate to this and I can’t stress enough about this topic. I always tell people be extremely careful when you really get into fitness and diet because it will literally take over you and your life and ruin your perception of so many things. I’m 16 years old and I’ve been struggling with a similar disorder that Josh did since I was about 13 and let me be brutally honest here. The disorder truly never fully leaves you.

    Your 17-year-old body is my end-goal physique that I've been working on for 5 years now. I'm not even close to what you were at 17, though that really goes to show you that you were doing damn well. Media can really skew peoples views, even BUFF and cut 17 year olds thinking they don't look good enough. Glad you spread awareness using this video.

      @@wheal2825 Thats okay! I think accepting these things is the first step, irregardles of whether they are true or not. I recommend some form of exercise, doesn't have to be much at first. According to studies, exercise is one of the best ways to improve mood however it might take some time for it to "kick in", I've noticed. Most important thing is doing something you actually enjoy. Trying to keep up an exercise routine that consist purely of things you hate is impossible. So try to find something you actually, truly enjoy doing. And start small, less is more in the beginning.       Yeah, very athletic. Some muscle but not like a bodybuilder. Healthy and balanced physique with great posture.
      Currently, I'm working towards that. I used to play a lot of videogames and ate too little, so my posture is bad, I'm now at about the ideal weight tho, which is nice.

      @@xXmlgamingXx355 yeah dude, it sucks at the beggining, but as someone who's been overweight in the past, you just gotta have focus, dedication and information.
      Also, you are going to see some lean people at the gym and is possible to feel bad at the beggining, but its ok, everyone is in a different place in life, you have to concentrate only on yourself and your progress (if thats what you want).
      I truly believe that we got to be healthy, but as body image is concerned, i think we should do 1 of 2 things: accept our own bodies and learn to be happy with it, or work to change what we dont like with realistic expectations. The middle ground of beeing unhappy with our bodies and doing nothing to change is the worst possible place.
      There is this one guy at my gym who is really overweight, and i gotta tell you, its the guy i admire the most there! He's been going for quite some time and obtained some great progress! The first steps are the hardest to take and he is doing them with so much focus and frequency that i find really inspiring.
      A lot of people who i know and have great bodies where actually overweight and unhappy with their bodies, i guess that gives some kind of extra focus, i dont know.
      Whatever you decide to do, just dont be unhappy with yourself 🙃

    I'm a CBT therapist and I think this is such an important video. Unfortunately eating disorders aren't recognised enough within men, but orthorexia and "bigorexia" are a big issue among the young male population. Thanks for shedding light on the topic, and for being so honest about your experience. I'm glad you're in a better place now.

    really appreaciate this. Im a woman who struggled with EDs through my teenage and im glad there's awareness for the guy side of things . the male fitness world is dangerous in a unique way because we (teenage tumblr anorexics) knew not eating was deeply unhealthy but I've not seen someone call out the orthorexia dogma for also being damaging mentally and physically.

      Right? Throughout my school life I remember been shown so many videos discussing anorexia (mostly in women) but nothing discussing other EDs, whether that included overeating or undereating. More awareness about diet needs to be given to children, and they should also be taught how to maintain a healthy one.

    I've experienced this same thing, it's interesting to see it from a male perspective. I was always chasing being skinny and its only now thay I've discovered powerlifting and stopped comparing myself to insta models that I feel healthy and at peace with my body and am able to eat anything without guilt or binge eating. Hope is out there for anyone struggling. An amazing video. Thank you for shedding more light on this.

    Thank you for your vulnerability. I have so much respect for you and your mission to fight back against the many harmful and misleading aspects of the fitness industry.
    I recently began caring about my own fitness about two years ago, and since then have had to check myself several times to avoid these same pitfalls. Especially as someone of seemingly chronic low self-esteem, they're easier to fall into than one might think.

      I mean, I'm sure they do have their own workout routines. But the problem is that people think or are made to think from media that if they do just that and they will look like them, discounting the fact most of them are on PEDs and doing it for fame, money or to influence.
      This same TH-camr made a video about Hollywood that expressed that. Like seriously, would anyone like the age of The Rock will ever look like that with natural training alone?
      I'm not discounting hard work, and I'm sure they do. But we shouldn't be looking at Hollywood for role models because much of them appears more than it is.
      And it's becoming dangerous that younger generations wanting to look like that and are chasing recognition when they should be focusing on improving themselves and don't realize the consequences in the long run. Like MFs want to take PEDs to be a buff waiter or something lmao.
      Nowadays, a lot of fitness gurus or "influencers" that give wrong informations with their photoshopped images and PED bodies just to sell you some BS and make them look good.
      Like always, media hype things up all the time to take advantage of the gullible.

    I only train to get that good feeling after completing a workout. I don’t worry too much about what I eat, whether I’ve big muscles or not. I just enjoy the good feelings that come with exercise

    Sadly there are far too many victims of this mentality, and it’s seemingly only gotten worse with how many clearly unnatural people don’t disclose that fact, giving even more unrealistic standards to teens.       Comparing yourself to the you of yesterday can also be unhealthy. Everything has a healthy and unhealthy version of it, keep that in mind. Define goals and then focus on the now, that's the safest route for people dealing unhealthy behaviour and ego.

    This was a great video that I shared with my 13 year old daughter who plays lots of sports and is sometimes too focused , at her age and activity level, on trying to cut calories when I keep expressing to her that that should not be, and is not the healthiest, path for her at this stage in her growth and training. Sometimes they gotta here it from someon else. Especially since much of your journey was taken around her same age and energy output level. Also the reinforcement of not comparing yourself to others was a good reminder for her as well. Thanks dude.🙏🏼❤💪

I almost had physique like that too, but was working myself to the bone for it and now just accepted my genetics and just workout and eat relatively clean to be my best self.

      I think thats the problem with people taking gear in the beginning everybody wants to try and max out their naturally possible physique to maintain that after being on gear.. only Problem is that they don't think about how their goals will change.. for example someone uses test e and gains some pounds, but while gaining them he suddenly wishes to be a lot leaner at the same time and that thought doesnt go away till he decides to do the next cycle and so on.. the fitness industry is fucked up and except a handful of people who are truly natural most nattys are still fake nattys and will never admit it

Lmao when I started watching your CS content I was like 30lbs overweight and that dumb ass game was my life, even with a very sporty background I was just a lazy slouched mofo with no interest in getting fit/muscular.     I'm thankful for videos like these, I know it can be hard to talk about personal problems that you had during your life but this is definitely helpful for many people out there that might make the same mistake, the moral of the story is to never compare yourself to others and to value your well-being (both physical and mental) more than your body-shape, again thank you, you might not know it but this definitely makes a difference in a world full of people that don't know how many young men and women go through this phase (and many never get out of it).

    I like Tim Ferris’ slow-carb diet because it specifically says the cheat day is mandatory otherwise it’s unhealthy and can cause a lot of problems down the line.

      I've learnt that you shouldn't despise "feel good" foods, thinking it's taboo to touch a bit of chocolate or indulgent meals when you're trying to achieve health goals; it creates a terrible relationship with food and in the long run can do you more harm than good. So important to still enjoy your food, and give yourself a treat!

When I was a kid with my dad we always worked out and I can't believe I did 100 pushups 100 burpees 100 pullups, etc. The weird thing is I never thought about social pressures as a kid but I was antisocial, and I had a good group of friends. As I am 18 now I can see how what young kids think and do can really affect what they become in the future. Just make sure you have a good husband

    Thank you for talking about this! I feel like orthorexia isn't talked about as often as anorexia, perhaps because the sufferers are chasing "health". I almost developed orthorexia myself, and now that I've mended my relationship with food, it's just bonkers how much I see disordered eating patterns being advertised as healthy ways of eating, especially in the fitness space. Glad to hear you were able to pull through and find help and regain balance!

Losing water weight in muscle makes them look more defined, vascular, and “cut”. When you hold a natural amount of water in you look more bulky and less defined. Tons of actors and bodybuilders talk about how they’re forced to do so and they basically feel like they’re on the verge of dying. They don’t dehydrate while training they do it for when they need aesthetics like photos, movies, and competition

    Outstanding video! Man, At age 18, I weighed 98 lbs at a height of 6’1”. From age 21-22, I went through a series of gastrointestinal failures that resulted in 4 major surgeries that kept me looking like a skeleton. I didn’t even have a “normal” BMI until my mid 30’s. Basically the first three decades of my life, everyone was stronger than me. Everyone was bigger than me. Everyone was fitter than me. And comparisons like that are a really easy thought trap to fall into.
    Being grateful for what you are given > the grass on the other side of the hill.

    I have a tendency to look up everything I eat, I'll read into things too much and end up feeling like everything is bad for me. This video is really relatable and it helps a-lot with the intrusive fears that come with this disorder.

      I feel the same. Before two years I started to get pain in lower back area and since then it didn't stop hurt. Because of that, I start look up everything I eat and if I eat something that is unhealthy, my life is over.

    I’m very glad that I found this video, already started lifting weights at age 15 but I did notice I’m going a bit crazy with my health and the body type I really wanted a fantasy that I thought I can but warning me about it helps me realize that it can negatively affect me and my perspective on life. It’s a good thing I’m not alone and glad that you show what is good and what is not. It’s Ok to workout and do things but I do have to consider my mental health and how at the end of the day should be happy with the body I’m at rn.

    I'm glad that I didn't grow up in the age of Instagram influencers, when I was in high school it was just reality tv stars. They at least didn't pretend to be just normal people making insane transformations. I feel for the zoomers because that has got to take its toll on your developing self esteem

      I think I’m technically a zoomer and honestly it’s not that bad. Some people just can’t get in the mindset of not caring; caring may not be the right word here but you get the idea. Other than that our lives are pretty great and easy, we can be very social if we like, or literally never talk to anyone face to face. Just like every little ‘group’ of people in life there are always those outliers that make you wonder lol
      Oh and I think tik tok and Instagram reels are were most of the feeling bad about your body crap comes from. People get so absorbed into those apps and it’s kinda addicting not gonna lie

    Man your starting point was way better than mine, you had so much muscle definition for somone who didn't hit the gym.
    I started out skinier than you but with no muscle definition at all, I looked to be nothing but skin bone and a thin layer of fat over the bone.

      Remember that he had at that point already been doing push-ups and pull-ups and such, plus his extensive sports background. So, the 'starting' point he's showing is just from when he started getting really, really into strength training for size.

      Yeah, same here. I used to play a lot of tennis before I start weightlifting and I was literally just bone. I've been lifting for a year and I'm just getting to around where Josh's starting point was.

    I wish I have seen this video when I was younger. Coincidentally, I went through of all you did, at pretty much the same age, and everything you said was relatable. I had an extremely strict diet, life and an overwhelming gym routine, because of my orthorexia and the desperate desire to be healthy. Thankfully, I got rid of this cycle, and now I feel free to eat and to do whatever I want, I feel free to live. I'm glad I got over it. This video described part of my life.

    I started lifting when I was 15 cause I wanted to get stronger and hated looking skinny. I never lifted to impress girls but instead to stop getting bullied, be able to defend myself and to take my mind off of my terrible mental health and physical health. Luckily I spend a lot of time researching muscle gain in general and was able to avoid what was discussed in the video. It’s been exactly a year since I started lifting and I have so far put on 35 lbs of muscle and maintained 13 percent body fat. I have done this while eating 3,800 calories daily of whatever food I want while trying to include high protein and nutrient dense foods into my diet. I don’t want this video to discourage anyone into not taking lifting seriously as it has cured my mental health problems and taught me discipline.

      @@quandaledingle3262 if your trying to eat more I would track the amount of calories your trying to eat and slowly try to increase your daily calories. If your plateauing I would try to change your lifting routine until you find one that you see the most muscle gain through.

      @@liamjunier8624 Tracking calories is something I would be careful with as it could turn into a bad habit and can also lead to eating disorders. And if someone is 14 I would not worry too much about it if you are getting skinnier, because once you stop growing you will need less calories to maintain the weight.

    I was a lucky one. My mother was a world class rowing athlete, and her long time friend is a dietologist/physician that works for my country's national anti-doping organization. They would certainly know a bit about health and nutrition. I think I don't appreciate the luck I have to basically be born into an athlete's family, but this video gets me thinking about that. I should help my friends with this sort of thing, or at least guide them in the right direction.

      @@hassuntzu6523 she’s an old swedish rowing champion, won nationals a few times and eventually got in into the national team and competed in a world championship, didn’t win sadly. She had to cut her career short because of university though.

    I tend to become obsessed with things that I am really into. I really enjoy working out and having an overall healthy lifestyle. Although my mom is a trainer who promotes a genuinely balanced lifestyle and she always helps me stay on the right track, I sometimes feel that it isn't enough. So it's nice for my mental to have an occasional reminder of the cost of pushing too far. This kind of videos really help me stay conscious of how far I'm pushing. Thank you for sharing your story!

      He was cut for sure but a lot of skinny guys just want pure mass and for that you need to bulk. If you were skinny to begin with then cutting will come easy after you finish bulking. I used to be like this dude where I would try to cut calories wherever I could but I now realize the importance of carbs in addition to protein when it comes to building muscle and getting stronger.

      oy Hex, am autistic (aspergers) so my own communication skills were pretty bad too. what helped:
      -read a few etiquette books. helps to have basic idea of how to act in various situations
      -watch a few good tv shows/movies. don't become a tv head. just that it helps to understand cultural references and have something to talk about. KobraKai is pretty straight btw
      -read Bible. helps straighten out inside the head big time, which by itself puts you on better footing communication-wise
      keep at it; you'll do fine

    I started lifting after a bad breakup and got hooked. I saw progress the first few years but it’s slowed down as I’m natural and feel like I’m close to my genetic limit. It can feel overwhelming when you see so many people who look huge and shredded all over the internet because you want to get to their level. But you have to be realistic. SO many people use gear and edit their photos to look better. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished and only compare to yourself.

      Im built like a square and have always been naturally strong. As a 93kg south african ex rugby player at 16 i started gymming at 15 and only started seeing progress in muscle definition now but have seen my strength build. Ive wondered on cutting and going too 83 kg but never started

    I'm really glad I found this when I did (about 6 months ago). I started working out for sports too, and am now surrounded by guys that have lifted for 5x years, do all this program stuff(& cycles), and social media and its unrealistic expectations. It sometimes does nag on me, but this has helped me keep a healthy perspective about myself and my goals.

    Replace getting muscular, with getting skinny and you get the girl version. It's so weird that we did the exact same thing, we are told the same thing too, end up with the same bad habits, and feeling worse and worse...Hearing a guy's side of things is really nice. Like a breath of fresh air since women tend to talk about this sometimes (even if they go back with better restrictive skills lately, still, they did their best). The only thing is that you weren't starving yourself because you need to gain instead of losing. The rest is like...man. I did the same things, didn't electrocute myself, not that.
    But I did the rest and also, a few more great things: like convincing myself a glass of water and 30 g of a banana is a meal, feeling full after one spoon of anything is the result. Feeling sick and thinking: Nah, I ate is how down the drain I went. And I am trying to like my body more but if someone naturally looks better, just because that's how their body looks, I still feel like less of a human being even if I know it doesn't matter.
    If someone only likes me for my looks then I don't need that person anyway and we'll never be happy. So, what's the point? Who knows? We just want to be loved. And somehow it got to our head: you can't be loved if x and y. Connection is necessary for survival, or it used to be, but our brains are still old style. Life evolved, brain still reacts to triggers it reacted to 2000 years ago 'cause it worked. So, of course, nothing is enough when it comes to getting what kept humanity alive.
    And I really like skinny girls, I really do which is weird. I like feeling like I am floating but I just want to do something else with my life which is all that convinces my perfectionist brain from taking over, I will say: I am going to eat that piece of bread, yes. I want to do something else than stand there and look pretty. And I am still eating healthy and etc but I hope I will never care as much if I eat some pasta one day cause I was hungry for something filling.
    Thank you so much for making this vid, it takes guts and if any guy tells you: you didn't try hard enough, you're not manly, blah blah. Please, for the love of God, for all the girls who totally relate to you, don't listen to them. This vid alone makes you more humane than most and that 100 percent is lovable and respectable.

      Well, I think many of us start obsessive because we want to do it the perfect way. This will, however, take away the fun of the training. After a while I started to also eat the 'bad' food because I just challenged myself to do it and noticed that eating it once in a while doesn't affect my looks and progression.
      Nowadays I follow my training program and just track my calories (roughly, not obsessive) and protein. I don't care about the fat and carbs. Gymming and the life around it is what gives me a lot of energy.

    I truly appreciate that video, I see the majority of fitness TH-cam channels, Coaches on Facebook and other platforms promote the "perfect body shape" which is extreme and usually unattainable. Eventually leading to dysmorphia and depression and people both men and women feeling "not good enough". this is one of the few channels that really helps people getting bulk or lean while maintaining acceptance in the process without overvaluing masculine body.

    This breaks my heart to see because my fitness "journey" started the same way. My senior year of high school I started doing the same thing - attempting to find guidance from "influencers" who had no place providing nutrition advice, and worked out endlessly. All I wanted was to be skinny and as a result I started cutting all "bad" foods from my diet, which turned into orthorexia. I was so restrictive that I would either avoid social gatherings or binge when given access to a ton of food at such social events. It really took a toll on my physical and mental health and while I'm in a much better place now 5 years later, I still tend to struggle with the guilt of skipping the gym or eating foods that as a high schooler I deemed unacceptable.

    Thank you I needed this video so much I started working out because I was rejected and for a year I let it define me I lost 20 pounds over the summer while not changing my diet just through workout and then focused on muscle I had binge eating and felt bad about it afterwards I eventually also got orthorexia and now am doing better I have a more sustainable plan and am taking care of myself guys please don't go too far deep into this for whatever reason nothing is worth the pains of feeling hopeless because you ate 4 more bread rolls than you alloted yourself for the week. Take care of yourself and do it carefully nobody is worth you doing this to yourself do it because you want it

    Not only is it heartbreaking to see that someone can be so influenced by trends but I find it even more heartbreaking that so little people talk about eating disorders in men when they are just as common. I'm glad someone is speaking up to make sure that others don't go down the same path.

    As a 19 year old I can relate. I did a lot of the things you did. I'm just glad I realized it sooner. Teenagers have no business following extremely strict and budget unfriendly diets and workouts that will not achieve them their unrealistic goals. I only hope content like this becomes more mainstream.

      I’m kind of lucky bc I got my exercise from practical things like riding bikes and was thinking of cutting wood for the fire (cos it’s cold in Australia right now) I feel as if going to gym when I first took interest in exercise I would’ve developed an unhealthy routine. I’ve always been very routine heavy and consistent with it so going to the gym would’ve been a really bad introduction to my life. Can’t say for sure without actually going to gym.
      I feel bad for people like this bc I think it could’ve easily been me

    This story really hits home how important for us to recognize that there is no one standard for "fitness" and that our bodies are designed to adapt to whatever we need them to do. For example, someone whose lifestyle requires them to lift heavy objects is inevitably going to look much different than the person who runs marathons, and there's nothing wrong with that. We also need to learn to trust our bodies, especially when it tell us we need food. Above all, be kind to yourself; fitness should enrich our lives, never detract from it!

      I hate how people think Marathon Runners are “weak.” When in reality their slow twitch muscle fibers allows them to endure running far longer.

    The best advice I can give is find active things you enjoy (martial arts, dance, yoga, parkour) and then compliment that with a healthy diet. Have simple goals that are realistic (gain flexibility, loose weight, gain muscle) rather than chasing the perfect body. If it’s not enjoyable for you, you’re probably going to crash and feel shitty about yourself. Fitness should enhance your life not overtake it.

      I got to 90kg (169cm) and thought fuck this. Bought a mountain bike after realising treadmills and static bikes do nothing for me. Ride to work (17kms) twice a week and every second week do a lap of town (30km) and the side affect along with full body work out once to twice a week and a healthy diet is down 11 kg in 6 weeks. Find what you love is 100%

    I train at home, mainly because at home there is no ego, no mirrors and people to compare myself to. Home training keeps me humble and I don't have to worry about being judged

    People should watch videos like this one before beginning any fitness journey. The mental side is severely overlooked while being a serious risk of ruining so many aspects of your life. I really hope these topics get more attention. Very important video, great job!
