      why are you then providing information on fat LOSS, while according to to your video (th-cam.com/video/QD64IbRyNv0/w-d-xo.html) you've struggled with muscle GAIN. So you're probably way different from the people that want to lose fat, and so you might just be adding to the confusion :(

      Never dieted in my life though have done ketosis as it is a metabolic state & not a diet as I was instructed by my GP to do so for a time which the benefits were minor to modest.
      The One thing I always limited my consumption was sugar though I halved my starch consumption replacing it with fat, fibre & other food sources as I aged because I can't sustain what I once did as a child or young man.
      I think one of the leading causes for people weight gain & poor physique is one reason being 'sugar'.
      I never had a sweet tooth like most while my mother was the opposite which she mimicked my eating habits in time & lost multiple stones though she can't help but eat chocolate for hidden sugar she is far better off.
      My rule is the same as my Cockney elders which is ''waste not, want not'', ''you are what you eat'' & ''variety is the spice of life''
      What Most do is they think their is 1 super food & they waste so much in their pantry because they buy fruit & vegetables they pretend to eat fooling themselves.
      If it is quality grub & not the same thing every day then I eat it though I have no sweet tooth making my life easy.
      You have to break that sweet tooth as my brother is of the same genetics to me but is overweight.
      People tell of the health issues of smoking, alcohol etcetera but I'd argue excessive sugar is the real life ender.

      carnivore claims are based on actual physiological and biochemical processes of the human body, e.g. we shouldn't eat fiber because our cecum is basically non-existent; we shouldn't mix carbs and fats because it activates the Randle Cycle, slowing metabolism and leading to glucose pooling in the blood (diabetes); we shouldn't eat plants because we don't efficiently convert the nutrients to their bioavailable form, etc
      which would you say is more reliable and logical?

      I worked in cybersecurity and supported intelligence operations until July of this year. There were some interesting ups and downs over the years, but 2020 is when we saw the spike that never really went down.
      We had a perfect storm of a gradual drop in to the barrier to entry (technical skill set required), target rich environment (everyone is on social media all day long), and motivation to succeed (economy sucks).

    I lost 90 lbs last year and people always ask me how I did it. All I tell them is that I found lower calorie, more satiating foods that I enjoyed and made them the cornerstone of my diet. I didn't exclude anything but I always made myself aware of nutrition facts of something before I ate it.

    All the people I know who are still active and healthy in their 90s, eat everything in moderation! Being active, being social, being interested in something, have a passion in life is the key.

      @@cincin4515same here my grandmother lived until 111. Her diet was very simple she ate toast with butter in the morning and ate red meat in the afternoon with rice - she used seed oils to cook. I think the reason why both of our grandmothers lived long was because of the fasting my grandmother was a devout Christian always praying

      Vegetarianism is also technically a diet but it can be extremely versatile with hundreds of traditional cuisines falling under this category. Even saying that "don't follow diets that can be named with one word" is a bit too much of a generalization imo.

    i lost 50 pounds in about 4 months by eating more satiating food that's high in protein and healthy fats, and 2 years later haven't gained any of it back and don't feel like i'm dieting at all. if your diet is not comfortable for you it will never last.

    Something that bugs me being more towards plant based (meat and dairy appears to set off certain unpleasant gut issues), is this big snobbery against tinned pulses and frozen veg. Sometimes practicality strikes higher than idealism. And I cannot afford to make everything 100% fresh and from scratch 100% of the time.
    Sometimes "good enough" is simply "good enough".

    When I was a teen girl I read that women shouldn't eat more than 1200 kcal a day, it ended in the hospital for me, I had less than 80 pounds on a 5'11 frame. Years after I was still in a cycle of sports bulimia and binge eating, I tried veganism, was scared of "unnatural" food. In my 30s now I've given up on the idea that I'll ever fully recover and be able to eat normally, I still count calories but manage to stay at around the same weight although I'm vulnerable to phases stress eating or subsisting for coffee for days. The mental and physical damage is immense, my mother was already going through a cycle of endless juice fasts during my childhood, did I even have a chance?

      I grew up in the 60's & 70's. We starved ourselves while drinking low calorie alcohol like mother and entered the 80's with dreadful eating disorders.
      I still don't know what I'm supposed to eat and binge often.

      @@cincin4515yes this is true. Diet culture was absolutely horrible in the 80’s. I remember watching my mother develop binge eating disorder after she joined weight watchers in the early 80’s. It deeply and negatively affected my perception of food and healthy/disordered eating. She’s still very obese and has disordered eating at almost 80 years old.

      After 30 years in the gym & 20+ years as a fitness professional working with hundreds of clients in that time, I’d say I’m pretty well versed in these things. Never thought I’d meet someone who thought getting more educated and doing things in a healthy balanced way was a bad thing…..? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

      Everyone has their own idea of balanced.
      So telling people to eat balanced can't work without fact based Information.
      Some people think drinking soda and eating JunkFood with a meal of self cooked veggies once a week is balanced.
      Some say it's eating as many different fruits and veggies as you can and have raw meals like rainbow salads every other day and don't eat sugar.
      So jzst saying "balanced" is a hollow as it can get.

      @@CordeliaWagner Like I said, it’s all based on any number of individual factors, which obviously vary from one person to another. But a balanced approach that accounts for those individual variables is always best, especially when it comes from a place of knowledge and education, and not from a standard fad diet template that people frequently blindly follow.

    I feel like most people forget that everyone digests food different. What can be „good“ for one is quite damaging for the other. I am gluten intolerant, that doesn’t mean that gluten in and of itself is bad. It’s just not good for me.
    Humans forgot to listen to their bodily cues - and I feel like each and every person should spend some time to ask themselves „how does my body react to different food types?“
    There are more universal effects (e.g. Having „bad“ reactions to too much processed foods) and more unique and niche reactions (like being gluten intolerant). At the end of the day, it is important to know how your own body reacts to food stimuli - only then will it be possible to hack your behavior with the goal of feeling your best. As you once nicely said „it’s no use looking good if you don’t feel good“

    I’ve done keto, and intermittent fasting. Keto I felt amazing but it wasn’t very sustainable money-wise or socially. Intermittent fasting is the only one I’ve actually done consistently for years. It’s easy to do, doesn’t require any specific foods, you have control over when you eat and it’s not that strict. I break it all the time with little consequence.

      Same but I do one meal a day now. I’ll get hungry and then it goes away . I only eat at night once per day and I’ll eat what ever I want. I did the no carb diet and got shredded but it’s not sustainable . It’s also depressing. We need to find something that doesn’t feel like a diet but more like regular living. I find one meal a day keeps my calories in check and it’s easily manageable and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on what I like to eat . But my weight loss is very slow but I’m good with that cause I can stick with it

      I found out I did intermittent fasting without knowing it, as I have troubles in the start of the day to eat something wich turned into a habbit. After I let someone tell me I somewhat do that I took it more seriously. I have never been fat in my life even though I am a big sugar addict and in general dont eat very healthy. Im pretty sure any form of fasting that suits you best is the way.

      I find keto/ whole food eating is actually cheaper if I add in processed carbs I end up paying for the processes involved in making it and for the colourful packaging etc

    I remember watching "Eating You Alive," a documentary about eating a strictly plant-based diet, and it not only claimed that eating this way is the only way to stay healthy, but that it can cure pancreatic cancer (one of the quickest-killing examples).

    14:00 Note Margarine and butter are made from two different fats.
    Butter consists of 70% saturated fat, 25% monounsaturated fats, 5 to 10% trans fatty acids, and 1 to 2% polyunsaturated fats.
    Realistically, butter should have 2 ingredients. Milk, and salt. That's it. The other problem is what the animals are fed, like gmo corn, or the antibiotics. etc.
    Margarine is made from a mixture of vegetable oil, and water.
    Margarine consists of a water-in-fat emulsion, with tiny droplets of water dispersed uniformly throughout a fat phase in a stable solid form. While butter is made by concentrating the butterfat of milk through agitation, modern margarine is made through a more intensive processing of refined vegetable oil and water.

    I developed anorexia recently. Even science based dieting techniques like CICO can be taught and done very irresponsibility and lead to illness. I would have never developed anorexia if I did not go online. I’m 100% sure of that.
    These diets everywhere combined with common sentiments like “if you can’t lose weight, it’s your fault” or “you’re a leech on society and selfish” of course will lead people to the path of eating disorders.

    I honestly stopped giving a f*** about all the cancer research when it comes to food. Everything seems to cause it and actually getting cancer seems to be random, so whatever. Eat as healthily as you're able to, eat varied foods and check with your doctors what you might need to work on.

    This trend has nothing to do with food and everything to do with identity. Similar trends are happening in politics and social movements. I implore anyone who finds these trends interesting to study up on Tajfel & Turners social identity theory of intergroup behaviour. Awareness of these social mechanisms is the only way to combat toxic social trends. Great video!

    I eat vegan myself, and man, at the peak of vegan youtube years ago, people were all in on these crazy "raw vegan", "frutarian" restrictions, as well as the weirdo who freelee used to date recommending people a crapton of sugar and that everyone should ride a bike for hours every single day.
    Veganism already has its problems which require a wide variety of foods and some supplementation, and some people want to restrict it even more, this is insane.

    Nutrition isn't easy, but I feel like many of these diets stem from inner denial and cognitive dissonance of what you really have to do. I know it sounds basic, but eating less (especially of things like soda and mcdonalds) and exercising more really are the answer. Not cutting out entire food groups, depriving yourself of nutrients, or doing weird cleanses you got from a shady influencer. It's hard work to change your habits over a long period of time, but it really is the answer.
    I'm not perfect, I still have lapses where I eat a crap ton of cupcakes at a party, but over the past year I've finally worked away from my stress eating and binging and I've started making homemade meals and exercising 1-2 hours a day. I really enjoy and look forwards to daily nature walks, and I'm not constantly thinking about food as much. To all those out here who are struggling, I'm rooting for you! You deserve to take good care of yourself, and you deserve a healthy life!

      Tbf alot of what you eat influences how hard it is to 'eat less'.
      Many foods will increase hunger hormones and are poor for satiety.
      Telling people on a SAD to just eat less is like telling an alcoholic to just drink less (tongue in cheek).

    I was never really on a diet. I basically eat whatever i want whenever i want and trying to not overeat. When i wanted to lose weight, i ate just less but everything. It worked. I am on a bulk now, i eat more, and diverse too. And it works too. Nothing extreme is good for your health. And dont take it that seriously. Food is just food. It should not be that big of a deal.

    I've done 3 day fasts many times and felt great, However, recently I tried a 5 day thinking I'd give my system a break after having had some digestive difficulties, Well.... on the morning of day 3, I felt like CRAP!! So, what did I do?? I ATE!! And decided to forget about this, at least for a while. You MUST listen to your body. If something doesn't feel good, stop doing it!

      After much thinking, I suspect my digestive problems had resulted in vitaminn/mineral depletion. Probably B12 and iron. Fasting at that time not a good idea. My next attempt will be only 2 days, and I'll see how it goes. In the past a 2 or 3 day made me feel great.

My mantra for eating is that I should never feel bad because of the things I eat that I know I probably shouldn't have, but for the things I know I should have eaten but didn't. This makes me excited to make varied and good choices, and doesn't bring me down when I make poor ones.

    A major problem with following the "summation of science" as far as healthy food choices goes is that the majority of studies involving food are laughable. Outside of axioms like "you need water to not die" and "don't eat car batteries" they can't actually causally inform anyone of anything - there are way too many confounding factors and the statistical gymnastics that goes on in the studies is comical and criminal.
    Try to eat real foods that don't make you feel like dogshit and you're ahead of most people.

    I got very ill from arthritis 12 years ago. I was on crutches and exhausted.
    Every dick head with an opinion on my lifestyle and diet came out of the woodwork.
    I realised if they blamed me for getting sick because I was "eating the wrong food" then they could believe that they will never get sick, because they are eating the right foods.
    It's a defence mechanism they use to deal with their fears. And some sociopaths see that and create diets to take advantage of those fears

      There are people who genuinely want to help others. Some of those “dickheads” may have been sick themselves at one time and healed it through diet. Diet does affect illness. Consider they may have been offering you a possible solution for your pain out of empathy.
      I don’t doubt it would get annoying to be offered constant “solutions,” but assuming everyone has selfish reasons isn’t productive.

    We have a toxic diet vulture that’s often about restriction when it should be about what do I need to eat everyday to support my physiology.
    The CICO model needs to emphasize how metabolism plays a role. Your metabolism will slow following a long term calorie deficit and regular fasting protocols. It’s effect on hormones will make it even harder to lose weight and u can’t cut calories indefinitely. Also makes binging more likely, insatiable cravings from a major energy deficit

      Your body is not going to start creating fat out of thin air, it will though force down your energy expenditure making you slower and lazier. This is why deficits cannot be extreme and also where diet breaks come in where you go back to your new maintenance for a while and let your body stabilize before starting a new deficit.

    What dealing with anorexic and orthorexic behaviour has taught me so far is:
    Fats, Carbs, Protein all have use and can be part of a healthy diet.
    Constantly thinking and researching what foods to rule out and what foods to eat for optimal health can be a lot more stressful and harming for a person than eating food that is not very nutrient dense occasionally or even for a burst of time.
    Whenever I slip into a Burnout I tend to not eat anything except for protein bars e.g because the immense irrational fear of "unhealthy" foods overshadows the rationale of eating whatever being more healthy than not eating.
    I now have learned that eating industry bullshit is not healthy but far more healthy than starving (surprise)
    Frozen veggie blends safed my ass because you can pop them in the microwave for ~10 minutes and you have a bowl of steamed veggies ready to consume.
    Also a well formulated multivitamin taken with something fatty like nuts will be beneficial for anyone not having the energy or mental capacity to eat vitamin dense foods (a lil fat makes fat soluble vitamins far more bioavailable for absorption, which can be essential for some kinds of vegan diets)

      Telling a person that to their dear life obviously struggles with eating, let alone eating a nutritionally sufficient amount or complex of foods just to eat real food might sound reasonable but afaik it most likely isn't (to the extent of my personal experience with ed and what I observed in others).
      Of course I and everyone with brains would wish for those people to do the "obvious" thing but that's very far fetched for people very acutely struggling imo.
      In the end what I talked about were harm reduction strategies for when any other option feels scarce.
      I hope this clarifies my point and sheds light onto perspectives some eating disorders folks might share :)

    I think that saying some diets are ideal for "some" people is a bit backwards. The problem is that the standard American diet is about the worst thing possible for "most" people. "Everything in moderation" and "a balanced diet" is not what most people do. Just cutting out sugar would be enough for most people to see vast improvements in their weight and health.

    Life expectancy and health is also about happines. Soo if your diet is pure, healthy but makes you sad. It wont make you live longer.

    it's almost like there's no easy way out. it's almost like some of these diets sound too good to be true. nothing beats suffering in the gym without the use of supplements. a pre-workout maybe if you feel like going nuts, but it's really not necessary. know your limits. seek assistance. hydrate.

    Great work yet again! Your information is always appreciated.
    I once lost 67 pounds in 2 months eating one jack in the box chicken sandwich for lunch and a quarter of a seedless watermelon for dinner. No breakfast, no snacks, that was it for 2 months straight. That's aprox 700 calories a day, and almost no nutrition.
    This changed my brain chemistry and the results were so fast. I wouldn't listen to anyone about what I was doing. Going from mid 170s to 105lbs had acquaintances asking other friends if I was sick, close relatives were very worried, but it didn't matter. This was working and I wasn't going to stop.
    I started to faint if I stood up too quickly, I started to have nightmares, my joints hurt....but I still felt fat.
    The only thing that knocked my back to reality was having to call my dad to remove the oil drain bolt on my car as I could not get it off, even with a long wrench. Not being able to change my damn oil brought it all into focus and I started eating again.
    This was well over 2 decades ago but even now I have odd health problems that I think are here forever. I have problems with my ATP cycle resulting in all kinds of issues.
    Most of us think "that would never happen to me" but in my case all it took was a bet with a friend to lose the most weight in 60 days. I won my a landslide....and I'm still paying for that "win" to this day over 20 yrs later.

    The best strategy to learn about anything is "first principles" thinking - I wanted to find out what the best diet for me was and so I read the whole medical physiology + biochemistry books and now I know how my body works and I can choose not only the best diet, but also exercise and generally lifestyle ❤

    I lost weight without a diet. Just ate “whole foods” and didn’t deprive myself from a few pleasures. Our parents and grandprarents didn’t need these silly fad diets to be fit, healthy and maintain their weight. Not that all of them were healthy and yeah there are certain foods and ingredients and foods I try not to consume often but my point is that people and these people promoting these extreme diets are over complicating eating healthy.

    I've been thinking pretty much the same thing for a while now. I was a vegetarian for 6 years and I gave myself anemia lol. I know vegetarianism has helped a lot of people, but it wasn't for me. In truth I was using it as an excuse to hide my eating disorder and excluding foods just fueled the fire. What works for me is everything in moderation, no food is forbidden, I just eat more of the healthy foods. Right now I'm at a point in my fitness and health journey where I don't need to loose any more fat, I'm so happy with my body and what it can do, so I find it easy to tune out all the noise of all these fad diets and cults. The people who fall for this are at a vulnerable time in their life and like you said, looking for control or also want to have a sense of purpose and identity, and it is so sad how many of these influencers are taking advantage of that. There are also the influencers that believe their diet actually IS the best diet and get sick and lead others to illness.

    Nobody talks about the most prevalent diet cult which is the calorie-counting sect that is obsessed with how much total heat of combustion certain foods produce when burned in a literal furnace. It is pretty much impossible to explain to its followers that organisms are not furnaces because they break down, digest and metabolize different compounds in various foods differently instead of burning them like fuel

      It’s the most scientifically logical one though, energy is not matter it’s just a number that represents physical formulas that stay constant in a closed system, and adding to it the law of energy conservation it should more or less work even if it’s not accurate.
      It does help that it is the most researched method with the most reliable researches and the least prone to be a marketed diet method.

    I just started trying to get stronger and in better shape but all this food stuff is wack. I just eat slightly more healthy items and eat less total food, and I feel fine. I found the key is to find something relatively light that feels filling so you aren't hungry later. The key to going to the gym and eating healthy is discipline. without discipline you slip and get impatient and take short cuts like steroids or fad diets.

    Get a food allergy test done. Avoid the foods that you are allergic to. Stop eating so often during the day. Give your body time to digest food and rest. Keep your hormones balanced. Exercise regularly, play a sport, cycle, go to the gym, just do something to keep your muscles strong. Make sure your get enough sleep. Do things and spend time with people that make you happy. Stop worrying about what people think of you and just do what is needed for you to be healthy which is all of the above.

      I did the carnivore diet for a month and slowly started adding foods back in. I found out that I was sensitive to many foods I was eating daily and I feel a lot better now that I no longer eat them. Allergy tests don't test for everything.

This is why it’s important to eat a diverse diet I myself eat animal based but I also eat rice, potatoes, veggies, nuts, seafood, fish, berries and I’m doing good

      Then you are plant based, not vegan. Veganism is a Moral Lifestyle which believes in animal rights. Not necessarily linked to a healthy diet, you can be vegan by just eating plant based potato chips for the rest of your life. But its a Moral Stance, not a diet.

      It’s not hard. Any time someone with above average charisma is pushing something you’ve never heard of before, and especially when they’re vague about the evidence, you should run.
      Think about things that work, from diets to OTC cures for basic ailments, to beauty products, and so on. You don’t ever see some hot, confident, half-dressed person spouting off about how great they are. When’s the last time you saw an influencer pushing Tylenol? They don’t have to. Because it works and everyone knows it. Ever seen an influencer pushing lavender essential oil as the best cure for a headache?

    All I know is that as someone with Celiac disease, I would never willingly eat gluten free if I had the choice. I genuinely don't understand how people without Celiac have the motivation to do that.

      I am pretty healthy and need variety but it didn't keep me from cutting out many food groups from my diet ;) I had a reason for it. I have little reason not to eat gluten as it's low-carb enough for me but I have much better, tastier and more nutritious items, I don't NEED or particularly want gluten. So it's not so hard to give it up. Not like I completely did it but close. And both I and my bread lover SO gave up gluten for a year just to see what happens (nothing) after we heard from a doctor that gluten is actually bad for most people, not everyone but it is a factor that may be a bad combo with other factors. It was very, very easy for both of us (we just cut out added sugar and many other things too, that was super easy as well. we kept what was really important for us).
      So that's it, gluten is super important for many people and not at all for others. I met people who found eating only meat easy too as that was their only really precious food item. Wow. You would need to pry my eggs and even sour cream from my cold, dead hands :D And I can't imagine not eating fruits for half a year either (my record is probably the 2 weeks that is my carnivore record too. I like challenges and trying out - usually not crazy and never dangerous - things even if I don't need them).

      Some people have this misconception that celiac is something that you develop like diabetes hence the gluten-free craze. I suppose the one upside is that those with actual conditions have a lot more gluten-free foods available than they did a decade ago like how the keto craze led to a lot more sugar-free options that benefit diabetics.

    A properly planned vegan diet is considered healthy by dietary organizations, and it by no means has to be restrictive. There is vegan junk food and just about anything you can imagine. There are vegan fad diets, but eating vegan in general is not a fad nor any more harmful than improperly planned omnivorous diets. In addition the ethical vegan movement doesn't promote restrictive eating for what I've seen.

    My grandparents grew up in a post-war Spain eating rice, bread and rats. When that era ended they ate whatever the hell they wanted because they finally could. My grandfather died at 93 and my grandmother at 97.

    Good video! Very informative. The segment on mental health really struck a chord with me. I felt so much guilt when trying to decide what to eat, at one point.
