  • In the Austrian town of Lebring near Graz, automotive supplier MAGNA Presstec produces particularly stable ladder frames for the automotive sector. Since 2017, production for the Mercedes-Benz "G-Klasse" has been running fully automatically on a line from KUKA. For MAGNA Presstec, this marked the beginning of a new era in production for the "G-Klasse": whereas much of the welding had previously been done manually, this work at MAGNA Presstec is now carried out by an automatic production line from KUKA.

this is just the means to faster production, however the backend coding to command robotic arms is entirely different thing, If CNC Gcode is something then Robotic arm Programming is entirely different and really hard, such as python/C, C++/Matlab...Robotics is not a walk on the cake, what you shall command your machine/robot shall commit, if you write a wrong line bad line or opps i did it again error...then its Phuuuuuuucked...sorry for the word...but this is reality.

@@tengilaurel3777 Oh boy, that's not how any of this works. Also it's pretty hard to convince someone on the leap from building 20th-century refrigerator tech (Midea) to 21st century robotics/automation (kuka). There doesn't exist enough propaganda to fill that gap. You *will* however be able to make a convincing argument for having sold enough refrigerators to amass a fortune to purchase such foreign tech.

"There doesn't exist enough propaganda to fill that gap"
      True.
But throwing a couple billions and buying all the intelectual property, patents, plans, knowledge, client relations and legacy of a 100+ year old company seems to fill that gap pretty damn well.
Its safe to assume that the majority of kuka robots are already made in china. Since its also the biggest client by far.
And its also safe to assume that in a few decades, the vast majority, if not all of the r&d labs of the company will also move out of germany.
No need to be first in the market and have a history of 100 years. Just produce cheaper goods. Make enough money, and buy out the tech.
And most importantly, buy out the existing spots in manufacturing lines all around the world. Because thats what really matters here. Cause lets be real, building robot arms is not exactly an impossible scifi tech. What matters is that these robots are already out there, people are already trained on them, and they will always need parts and replacements. The way the high-end robotics market is, even if all the r&d closed in germany and the talent from there formed a new company, that new company would never capture any significant market % in a million years.
It really is amazing that Germany let this purchase happen.

@@Mr30friends I'd love to disagree with you on most of your points, but admit that my rebuttals will asymptotically go to crap with time. I strongly maintain my position on the naive notion that the purchase equates to more than just that ("it is X's property, thus X's technology"). By the same infantile argument, should *I* ever purchase a kuka robot, it must then be *my* technology. The sheer simplicity and arrogance of such propaganda may very well end up as its downfall.
I will, however, already agree with you today that the sale of a strategic asset was a monumental mistake. But Germany, in past and present forms, has never been much of a strategic leader. The sale of kuka (and the sale of automation company Grohmann to Tesla, no less) cements an ideology of impulse and tactic, but most certainly not strategy for a country that wanted to lead Industry 4.0. It is disappointing, but not surprising.
