The horizontal surfaces of many ships aren't very thick. I think the A-10's gun has 55 or 60mm of penetration on modern armor. I doubt an A-10's GAU can sink a cruiser, but it could probably shred the upper works to the point repairs would take a long time.
The A-10 can also individually drop 6 2000lb bombs or 4 guided 2000lb bombs. Iron probably didn't use them because they would have been way too OP against ships.
During the Dev server those GBU 8 2000 pounder guided bombs were dumb bombs and didn't actually guide at all. Annoying as hell but what ever. Typical of gaijin to release the Dev server way before it was ready to be released.

Shaped charges aren’t the best to use against ships. You have: many crew instead of just a handful, components are spaced out, compartments are separated into multiple bulkheads, volatile ammunition is stored deep beneath the ship, etc. AKA the opposite of tanks which are very compact with ammo and fuel stored close together with a handful of crew with most tanks not really having bulkheads beyond engine compartments or ammo stowage.
When shaped charges and AP belts are all you have, I'll pick the shaped charges every time. Of course, given the freedom to choose freely, I'd choose a bomb (guided or not, still could make it work) with a time-delay fuse on it so that it goes thru the decks a ways, and THEN explodes, hopefully hitting a major fuel tank or ammunition magazine. Or you know, fit a proper anti-ship missile to it, I hear it's not hard to get the Harpoon to talk to all manner of datalinks.

Although if you threw in another A-10 or two, you could do strafing runs along each side as that was something done to suppress open AA mounts in WWII. With the way modern ships are set up, strafing runs can mess them up pretty good. Not a massive amount of armor and they are bloated in size. You can cuck their defenses pretty bad with mass rocket artillery barrages. But as an advocate for roles, I think you would see more like B1's and carrier launched F18's using anti-ship weapons and not an old army line support brawler due for an airframe overhaul going at major warships. I wouldn't doubt the Russian Navy is retarded enough to allow a suicidal A-10 to get close and let it rip causing so many bullet holes the swiss rename their cheese.
I think these simulations routinely ignore that the battleship AA batteries are manned by fairly exposed crew. A burst from an A-10 along the decks would severely, and instantly, shut down most of the light AA and would also trash any kind of range finding equipment for the heavier and more protected AA.
The turrets of the secondary armament (5" guns) of most ships of that era aren't as heavily armoured, the main gun of the A10 would likely punch through and knock out the secondary armament quite easily. Most of the anti aircraft guns (25-40mm) are on open deck mounts so a strafing run would turn the AA gun crews into mincemeat. Then you can send in the torpedo bombers to deliver the killing blow.

Top Tier SPAA will be having a nightmare, not a field day. That is, if you bring Mavericks, and can lock on to the AA outside of it's missile range. That's what you have to do in DCS to take out AA batteries with an A-10, and it's actually quite effective in this role. Basically, stay high and far, because those Mavericks may have a rocket motor on them but they're more like a glide bomb in how they actually fly. The higher and further away you are, the longer those Mavericks can reach out.

If battleships were susceptible to 30mm ammunition no nation on earth would have bothered building them. Light discussion with a friend, the A-10 could make a pass at 40,000ft carrying 4 GPS clamp-on equipped B43 Thermonuclears to deliver the weapons in a box formation creating a quarter megaton "hydraulic press" around it without the ship ever having a clue what was going to happen.
One little mistake, you can only fire the Cannon on an A-10 for 3 seconds, or the recoil will stop the forward motion of the plane and cause it to stall.
The title very explicit says 'battleship', yet the video features a pair of cruisers :| You'll find weapons of similar size on ships in the mid-higher end of coastal trees, and usually in more numbers. Yet those ships struggle to kill destroyers, so surprise surprise, the 30mm can't really damage a cruiser. Even with the advantage of shooting at the unarmoured deck from above, all you can do is damage unprotected equipment and kill the crew on the first and second decks immediately below. Realistically, the crew would just move lower in the ship
The flight model needs a lot of work. The A-10 can turn like that, but it losses energy like nobody's business. The A-10 could rival P-47 or even P-51 in a dogfight
Having seen an A-10 at an airshow, this... seems pretty close? Those things can maneuver pretty quickly, at least when not carrying a weapons load. As far as the gun... I would've expected more damage to the crew and AA guns, but critical systems damage being minor is about what I would expect. Whether or not the gun translates to tank kills, idk. My understanding is that it's intended for more moderately armored vehicles (APCs and whatnot) and light fortifications, as well as from fairly substantial range. For MBTs... well, it will probably make them experience a sudden lack of ERA packs, possibly some light critical damage, but far from just ripping them apart. Still, that is all useful.
From how it's been on the test server it pretty much deletes every tank around or above its BR. The low side armour and even worse roof armour on most tanks just leads to it shredding them
Soon any custom battle where the creator choose "plane: all br" will be unplayable for everything other than a jet. I mean it's already the case but it isn't going to improve...

Lacking AP bombs, you are only going to wreck the upper works, though that can still mission kill the ship. If the simulation you use has the Durendal, you should probably try that, but you would need to use either an F-111 or F-15E
that's the thing though, the 30mm shell is using a dense depleted uranium core that is self sharpening, meaning the thicker the armor & faster the shell, the deeper it will go (and sharper it becomes, but that should be self explanatory). dense uranium > steel & wood also the gau 8 cannon wouldn't give a shit about deck armor or armor in general, since it has enough shells& the fire rate to simply saw through the deck like an impaling sword to a tanks crew compartment, or to a ships ammo rack

A battleship's anti-aircraft weaponry is considerably more potent against the A-10 than the A-10's 30mm is against the ship so standing off with guided bombs until the dual purpose armament is out of commission would be recommended. Many battleships, not an Admiral Hipper-class cruiser as seen here, could be designed with protection against armor piercing shells with explosive fillers in excess of the Mark 84. The A-10's payload is probably insufficient to "blast ships into the depths" in the case of a battleship but could force the crew to abandon ship if enough damage is inflicted. I suspect near misses with the Mark 84s would probably prove more effective than direct hits in order to damage the hull below the water.

If an A-10 pilot were to attempt something like that, firing down the smokestack is probably the way to do it. - The A-10 can fire bombs and missiles, and like any aircraft capable of carrying missiles, it can probably be adapted to fit an anti-shipping missile. In which case it doesn't matter if it's an F-35, A-10 Warthog, B-52, or even an adapted B-17, you've likely sunk it from well beyond visual range.
Ah yes, taking an Anti-tank specialist against warships, a recipe for shenanigans. The A-10 irl is good at its job because of the shear amount of ordnance it can carry, and it’s all but impervious to small arms fire, not necessarily larger caliber cannons. And side note, the A-10 is extremely maneuverable when it has an empty load, it’s just ya know, designed with the intent of having an entire B-17’s bomb load strapped to its hard points (obvious exaggeration is obvious)

the A10 was designed to be a close ground sup[port aircraft, not a fighter, so its not as fast as fighters but its extremely maneuverable in order to stay close to the ground troops. basically its a flying tank.

The A-10 is actually known to be quite agile. Not fast. But what with the wing span and everything, the A-10 is known to turn well and what not.
In a simulated exercise, an a-10 was able to outmaneuver and “kill” an F-14 tomcat

they simply built them differently back then. modern arnti ship missiles are built for speed and radar evasion, not penetration or explosive force. modern ships are not armoured like they used to be- Modern radar and anti missile and anti-torpedo systems have made armour obsolete.

Anyway, I’m really excited that they added the A-10 to WT! It’s gonna be so fun, but challenging to use. Of course, top tier SPAA is gonna have a field day, but that’s part of the fun :) I am a little disappointed that the gun dispersion isn’t as huge as in real life, I was really hoping to douse an entire grid square.

Top Tier SPAA will be having a nightmare, not a field day. That is, if you bring Mavericks, and can lock on to the AA outside of it's missile range.
That's what you have to do in DCS to take out AA batteries with an A-10, and it's actually quite effective in this role.
Basically, stay high and far, because those Mavericks may have a rocket motor on them but they're more like a glide bomb in how they actually fly. The higher and further away you are, the longer those Mavericks can reach out.

It seems like lazerpig is rather accurate with what he’s said. But because it was made for infantry units and light armored vehicles. At least the cannon was. So.. using it on a ship is understandable at how crap it is.

One little mistake, you can only fire the Cannon on an A-10 for 3 seconds, or the recoil will stop the forward motion of the plane and cause it to stall.

You'll find weapons of similar size on ships in the mid-higher end of coastal trees, and usually in more numbers. Yet those ships struggle to kill destroyers, so surprise surprise, the 30mm can't really damage a cruiser. Even with the advantage of shooting at the unarmoured deck from above, all you can do is damage unprotected equipment and kill the crew on the first and second decks immediately below. Realistically, the crew would just move lower in the ship
The flight model needs a lot of work. The A-10 can turn like that, but it losses energy like nobody's business. The A-10 could rival P-47 or even P-51 in a dogfight

Having seen an A-10 at an airshow, this... seems pretty close? Those things can maneuver pretty quickly, at least when not carrying a weapons load.
As far as the gun... I would've expected more damage to the crew and AA guns, but critical systems damage being minor is about what I would expect.
Whether or not the gun translates to tank kills, idk. My understanding is that it's intended for more moderately armored vehicles (APCs and whatnot) and light fortifications, as well as from fairly substantial range. For MBTs... well, it will probably make them experience a sudden lack of ERA packs, possibly some light critical damage, but far from just ripping them apart. Still, that is all useful.
From how it's been on the test server it pretty much deletes every tank around or above its BR. The low side armour and even worse roof armour on most tanks just leads to it shredding them

As an A10 Fanboi, I am impressed, the survivability is extremely high, the payload is effective even with what you are currently bringing, find the fact that modern-day A-10's 11 hardpoints, and the gun which is meant for fighting Soviet vehicles it does what it's supposed to, the thing that you don't understand is that us A10 Fanbois are Not all about the 30mm gun, it's about the sheer Firepower that this CAS plane can bring, and it does exactly what it is designed for, be slow, turn fast, tank bullet, and Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt

Ive used this A10 in Afghanistan a shit load. I was a forward observer for 8 years. This and the F15E are my favorite CAS platforms by far.

that's the thing though, the 30mm shell is using a dense depleted uranium core that is self sharpening, meaning the thicker the armor & faster the shell, the deeper it will go (and sharper it becomes, but that should be self explanatory).

also the gau 8 cannon wouldn't give a shit about deck armor or armor in general, since it has enough shells& the fire rate to simply saw through the deck like an impaling sword to a tanks crew compartment, or to a ships ammo rack

@@cr90captain89 A ship has so much internal space and comparmentalization that a 30mm strafing run will likely do little more than maim a few sailors for each pass. A battleship's anti-aircraft weaponry is considerably more potent against the A-10 than the A-10's 30mm is against the ship so standing off with guided bombs until the dual purpose armament is out of commission would be recommended. Many battleships, not an Admiral Hipper-class cruiser as seen here, could be designed with protection against armor piercing shells with explosive fillers in excess of the Mark 84. The A-10's payload is probably insufficient to "blast ships into the depths" in the case of a battleship but could force the crew to abandon ship if enough damage is inflicted. I suspect near misses with the Mark 84s would probably prove more effective than direct hits in order to damage the hull below the water.

This seems about accurate;
- The A-10's gun would never be able to penetrate the armour belt. Ever.
- The A-10's gun, however, would _devastate_ the superstructure, as most battleships of WWII vintage had shifted to an "All or Nothing" armour layout, meaning that only the critical parts are heavily armoured, but the armoured parts are _significantly_ tougher than their contemporaries with an equivalent amount of armour. Of course there is _some_ armor in the superstructure, but nothing that the A-10 likely couldn't make swiss cheese out of.
- In the _highly_ unlikely case an A-10 can survive getting over a WWII battleship, depending on the thickness of the deck armour, it _might_ be possible to penetrate the ship to the engine room. but that's extremely unlikely. If an A-10 pilot were to attempt something like that, firing down the smokestack is probably the way to do it.
- The A-10 can fire bombs and missiles, and like any aircraft capable of carrying missiles, it can probably be adapted to fit an anti-shipping missile. In which case it doesn't matter if it's an F-35, A-10 Warthog, B-52, or even an adapted B-17, you've likely sunk it from well beyond visual range.

Ah yes, taking an Anti-tank specialist against warships, a recipe for shenanigans. The A-10 irl is good at its job because of the shear amount of ordnance it can carry, and it’s all but impervious to small arms fire, not necessarily larger caliber cannons.
And side note, the A-10 is extremely maneuverable when it has an empty load, it’s just ya know, designed with the intent of having an entire B-17’s bomb load strapped to its hard points (obvious exaggeration is obvious)
