I almost didn't bother watching this one, but now I'm glad I did. The A-10 is such an awesome aircraft! It may not have been designed to dogfight other aircraft, but can you imagine what it could've done in WWII?
The problems that people seem to have forgotten when asking for a matchup! 1) The A-10 is a Jet so it automatically has a speed and vertical advantage despite not having a modern fighter Thrust to Weight Ratio 2) The A-10's mass advantage and 30mm Avenger cannon means that even if the P-51 gets a shot off on the Hog, The A-10 can tank it, The P-51 cannot do the same in return.
Hey GS, how about a WWII senario to see if a single A-10 could be successful on a mission against the Axis like a wing of B-17s might perform. Just to see what it might have been like if the Allies had the A-10 to go against ground targets, while defending itself against Bf 109s, Fw 190s, and the like.
@@TheNbc27 Maybe so, but using tactics and the more consistant power of the A-10s engines I think he'd have a chance. Remember the Axis aircraft have no radar so they have to find him first.
I was actually hoping you'd give Toxic your tail just to see how the A-10 held up to the punishment. Great flying regardless but I'd be curious to see what kind of damage 6 50s could do to the flying tank
Not saying that the P51 would do much damage overall, but an engine's an engine, and control surfaces are moving parts. You put enough rounds into either, you're going to tear something off.
I'm wondering if its your P-51 pilot and whether he was playing to the P-51's strengths in this fight. You aren't the first to try this match-up in DCS, but you are the first to have the A-10 dominating this way.

Snap roll. Looked like he pulled a bit too hard while yawing to the left, so his left wing stalled. He got it under control pretty quickly, so it worked out well for him.
I am pretty sure you hit the pilot in that first fight, instant mashed potatoes inside that cockpit... one of those rounds hitting someone must be absolute destruction!
When I read the thumb nail I thought for sure you were fighting against the A10 and wondered if you would even get a kill. I watched an A10 demolish an enemy position on a hill in Afghanistan after the Canadian battery had been firing on it. We took incoming and the Canadians went into action and I was standing behind a row off hesco barriers separating us from the battery and you could see the vapor trails and watch the impact on the hill. It was awesome. Then all the sudden the guns stopped and two A10s rolled in and the first took a run with some air to ground missiles. However the second one came in with the 30 and the explosive dust plume was a lot larger than the missiles. It was like the gun was exploding the hill side. Flipping awesome. That gun when fired is so distinct. I started my training at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri and there was a practice ground close where the A10 would do runs and on FTX's you would here the MAH sound of that gun out in the distance. Those things are so Flippin cool.
Efficient too. Which is why the REMFs with stars want to get rid of them. And replace them with a platform that carries less than a quarter of the Hogs load and can't fly in lightning storms.
It is really quite something how the GRs and GS get often wildly different results from aircraft combat comparisons. The GRs are often sort of proudly light on training, so I tend to trust GS, at least when he’s focused (fighting as underdog typically makes him the most focused).
A few thoughts. 1) Though I know it's not modeled, I still expected to see a red coating on the inside of the P-51's plexiglass in that first fight. Brutal. 2) The TF34 is a really solid engine and well optimized for low level flight. It has a lot of get up and go below say 18,000 ft. Or at least it does if it behaves like the civilian CF 34. 3) I bet if the P-51 got on your six and peppered both of your engines with AP .50, you would find yourself in the safest best armored glider around.
Engines are still very vulnerable from the front and back, you can armor the nacelles all you want but you can't do anything about the inlet and exhaust. It'd likely only take a few rounds before the engines disassembled themselves.
The P-51 honestly is NOT nearly as maneuverable as pop culture has led people to think. The laminar flow wing was designed for speed and range, not maneuvering, and didn't generate as much lift as the wing on the Spitfire, or particularly the F4U (which matched the mustang in speed and acceleration). Now once Leatherneck releases their F4U-1D I'd love to see if it fairs better. The Corsair is much more maneuverable than the Mustang, with a significantly higher rate of roll, and a much better wing for maneuvering

@@jackson-pl5zg That F-22 kill mark could have had a corresponding dozen A-10s on the F-22 he/she shot down in the exercise. That's why you do exercises - to learn. I does not tell you anything about plane capabilities where the skilled pilots are aware of their opponents strengths/weaknesses
It makes me wonder how it will turn out in a A10 VS ME262 match, you've shown us P51 stands almost no chance against 262... And seeing all these crazy moves makes me feel like P51 is prop version super maneuverability
262 would be better off doing hit and run passes on the A10. It has a speed advantage, and has a better armament of 4x30mm. Might manage to scratch the A10s paint job...
This is what I watch for. Thanks! I'd like to see you run through the best of the WWII fighters and see if you can hand their asses to them as well, or find one that can hand the A10 it's ass. I have seen some dogfights on other channels between German fighters and the A10 that didn't go so well. Their cannon can do a fair bit more damage with one or just a few hits that the .50s. Anyway a series "A10 vs ???." Or maybe a blind merge series where you don't know which WWII era fighter you will face. Finally, I noticed you were flying without other ordnance. How much of an improvement is that?

Depends on the exact versions, the P-51 should have the advantage up to 25k ft as it's generally the better dogfighter, from there up the Merlin kinda runs out of breath, and the 47s turbo should maintain its power better and give it the advantage.
@@rare_kumiko P-47N vs P-51D is what I was thinking, and yes keep the altitude up high enough that the P-47's turbo comes into play. Both planes have strengths and weaknesses. Be interesting to see how it would play out.
The damage models have come so far in DCS. Glad to see you still having fun in the warthog, it's an absolute favorite of mine. Had a lot of fun watching this one!
Try the same matchup at 20,000 ft. or more, where the P-51 is just below its critical altitude in high blower. The A-10 will have far less thrust than at sea level and likely less than the P-51.
Have a weird idea for matchups. So countries who don't make their own aircraft have to buy them from those who do, usually this means that those aircraft are compared. For example, my country had it finalized to either the Rafale or the f15e. Kinda, we have a special version of the f15e now but either way, I wanna see how these aircraft that the different countries were deciding between actually compare in a fight. But that will take many videos since there's gun only, fox2 allowed and bvr so I understand it isn't done since people will probably get bored of seeing those few fighters fight each other so much.

Interesting what you said about "making it interesting". I've been wandering a lot about your insane victory rate in videos. Obviously your an awesome pilot but It'd be cool to see you fly against a superior pilot in a dogfight of equally matched aircraft. Would also be cool if you did some more dogfight vids where you fight in both the featured aircraft in different rounds to see what's plane and what's pilot. That collision has to be an artifact of the damage model. I don't care how well built your plane is, crash 6000 pounds of metal into it at 100mph and it's not going to have a good day.
The cannon on A-10 is underperforming. But P-51 is kinda the convenient opponent, because of so-so low speed handling. Planes like Spitfire Mk 22 or F4U4B in theory should do better, but I guess they aren't exactly in DCS at the moment.
I would honestly guess in reality that the p-51 might have a slight advantage at low speeds but I think they would be closer to evenly matched in the end
Yes, but the P-51 pilot should have avoided rolling, which killed all of his low speed advantage (since the Mustang bleeds a lot of speed rolling, compared to other well-known WWII fighters). Pitching, yawing is somewhat acceptable - rolling is reducing the lift of a laminar flow wing, which, is horrible at low speeds to begin with.
What about the Hog against a FW-190A8? 4 x 20 mike mike. If the Butcher Bird gets some rounds in the right direction, it should dent the paint a bit more than a Mustang hitting the left wing I guess...

The smoke and explosion effects are severely outdated though.
One of the well known problems with the A-10 is it's distinctitive lack of two additional wing mounted GAU-8s.
Otherwise known as reverse.

He did that about a year ago. P-47 won 2 rounds, and the A-10 won 2 rounds. One of his few videos where the outcome was a tie.

The 262 only really improves in firepower. It was even LESS maneuverable than the P-51 at low speeds.

The A-10 versus Warbirds fights I have seen where the A-10 did not dominate were when the A-10 was laden with the extra weight of munitions.

Try the same matchup at 20,000 ft. or more, where the P-51 is just below its critical altitude in high blower. The A-10 will have far less thrust than at sea level and likely less than the P-51.

Have a weird idea for matchups.
So countries who don't make their own aircraft have to buy them from those who do, usually this means that those aircraft are compared.
For example, my country had it finalized to either the Rafale or the f15e. Kinda, we have a special version of the f15e now but either way, I wanna see how these aircraft that the different countries were deciding between actually compare in a fight.
But that will take many videos since there's gun only, fox2 allowed and bvr so I understand it isn't done since people will probably get bored of seeing those few fighters fight each other so much.

I seem to recall hearing that the main thing people thought when it came to a P51 vs an A10 was about the turn rate in a 2 circle.

Obviously your an awesome pilot but It'd be cool to see you fly against a superior pilot in a dogfight of equally matched aircraft. Would also be cool if you did some more dogfight vids where you fight in both the featured aircraft in different rounds to see what's plane and what's pilot. It is an A-10, designed to take serious damage and still fly. Ramming anywhere outside of the cockpit is kind of futile.

That collision has to be an artifact of the damage model. I don't care how well built your plane is, crash 6000 pounds of metal into it at 100mph and it's not going to have a good day.
The cannon on A-10 is underperforming. But P-51 is kinda the convenient opponent, because of so-so low speed handling. Planes like Spitfire Mk 22 or F4U4B in theory should do better, but I guess they aren't exactly in DCS at the moment.

I would honestly guess in reality that the p-51 might have a slight advantage at low speeds but I think they would be closer to evenly matched in the end
Yes, but the P-51 pilot should have avoided rolling, which killed all of his low speed advantage (since the Mustang bleeds a lot of speed rolling, compared to other well-known WWII fighters). Pitching, yawing is somewhat acceptable - rolling is reducing the lift of a laminar flow wing, which, is horrible at low speeds to begin with.

What about the Hog against a FW-190A8? 4 x 20 mike mike. If the Butcher Bird gets some rounds in the right direction, it should dent the paint a bit more than a Mustang hitting the left wing I guess...
