Giving one for each section isn’t a bad idea - but then there should still be a single award for athlete of the year. So you can win track athlete of the year against everyone in track, and then the winners of the three categories also essentially go head to head for athlete of the year.

    • @ricardorgomez
      @ricardorgomez 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

I think this is quite reasonable. To have an award for each category but one of those winners will be athlete of the year. And the athlete of the year will get a trophy that has a color specific to that designation.
But the big issue I have is that it’s awarded by a group of people and what THEY think should get it. One of the reasons why I love track is that no one is in charge of deciding who wins. Whoever crosses the line first. No questions.
Like the Olympics, I think they are over-complicating things. The co-ed events are the worst. Lots of b-rate runners and more money and time needed to run these events.
Track and Field has become bloated… Time to trim down….

Explain to me how a field event athlete like a pole vaulter would even stand a chance against against a track runner than can run 4-5 events but you as a pole vaulter only have that event. I think it’s impossible to compare a sprint record like USA in bolts to a person running a world record time in a marathon.

Don't think it's a bad idea to split into separate Track & Field AotY Awards, but everyone should've been made aware beforehand, that was handled badly by World Athletics! There could/should still be an overall Athlete of the Year Award even after splitting into individual Track, Field & Out of Stadia Awards. Would be great to get a video from TRP on 18yr old Freshman JaMeesia Ford who was just 0.04s away from breaking Abby Steiner's indoor 300m NCAA Record in her season opener a few days ago :)

The issue isn't that six people were awarded the title, it's that the organizers did not let ANYONE know beforehand that it'd be like that. That's simply poor mishandling. If they did what happened, then had an overall athlete award, there would've been literally no issue whatsoever.

I totally agree that they should have an athlete of the year for track, field and road, but that shouldn't replace the athlete of the year, they should still choose one of the three to be athlete of the year. I would even go so far as to say they should go one further and have an overall winner out of both sexes, so that there is only one athlete of the year as well as a male and female of the year and make it even more exclusive for that one.
Exclusivity is really important, that's part of why the Olympics are held in higher regard than the World Championships. With that in mind, maybe an athlete of the decade, etc. Either way, as Noah said, there should be a lot more awards. Age group awards, newcomer, specific, events, etc. How crap would the Oscars be, if there was only one award each year.

I could understand if they did like 1st to 3rd placing to change it up a bit but giving them 3 of the same awards for overall Athlete of year feels like. “Hey everyone did amazing so everyone gets a trophy!!! Yayyyy”
We all want to know who was #1 not 3 numbers ones in different fields of work.
I agree with Noah that maybe introduce Best rookie of the year/Most improved or coach of the year. But when it comes to the top top athletes of the year that should be one person that stands alone. It’s like the Oscars or Grammys we can only have one movie or artists (male/female and all the other categories) of the year. If they gave out 3 of the same awards to the other nominees it’s wouldn’t feel special. Yeah members of the committee will pick who they think is best and we might not agree with the pick but that’s what awards are. One person solely at top and that’s it.
Also if they do decide to do this option again they need to make a whole new category when calling the athletes up but I think take the 3 who won their section and pick the best one out of the 3. 🤷🏽‍♂️ that’s just my humble opinion.

This reminds me of when I was finished watching Olympic events when they came around ever 4 years. Most of my young life, the most watchable and the most traditional sporting events like boxing, track and field events like the short distance events, dominated commercial viewing of the Olympics. Suddenly, all of these events were no longer made easily available for television. Instead, events like gymnastics, ice skating, volleyball, and even talk of baseball, golf and other events that the average American athlete could not participate in because of the high expense of those sports. This is a very old tactics to recognize groups that normally can't participate in sporting events because they are just not built the same way as the ones that dominate those events. I am reminded of my days of wrestling. My school was very good and competed at a high level throughout the state. The main reason as far as I could see that we didn't dominate this even in the Olympics is because most of us could not afford off season wrestling clubs, and the ability to compete in the off season. When the regular season came around, we just were not on the same level as those that lived in the more affluent communities and cities. I have gone the long way around saying more directly why I believe they have decided to give this award to multiple categories, but if you look at it from this perspective, it will be clear why this decision was made and behind closed doors. Am I bothered by what they did. No. This is how the world works and always has. Some events there is just no way they can dominate unless a certain group is excluded from participating. Some running events in the US don't allow Africans to participate in because over decades, no one else has been able to compete with them. So the rules were changed. This is what's happening to track and field today.

I find it very hard to disagree with you. Everyone will say the 1500 loss to Kerr, but he still had a silver in it and a gold in the 5000m. But does his legit top 3 status in the mile and the 3000m, WB in the 2000m, and the 2 mile and 4th in 1500m mean nothing? But yea I think it's now going to be a mentality thing for him.....best in the world throughout the season and second when it matters most TWICE! I thought a little bit of humbling with Wightman would be good to humble any ego from popping to the surface but losing the gold twice in perfect seasons is going to hurt lot more than just his ego.

I'm pleased to see World Athletics handing out Awards in three categories for females and males. We, in the Statistics realm, had suggested such an initiative years ago, when we also pleaded with the 'Powers-that-be', to cancel all World Records and Best Performances achieved prior to 1st January 2000. Standards for new Records would be at 90% of the pre-2000 marks. We felt that it was extremely unfair for athletes in certain events (you can guess which ones) had no chance of ever getting a Worlf Record Bonus payout. Tony Hunt, World Junior Athletics News NZL.

The governing body is a private entity with no accountability, they can do what they want when they want. This is not unlike people sharing the Nobel Prize. It’s not always going to be announced that two scientists will be getting the Nobel Prize. But I guess the fact that it was not announced or hyped up ahead of time is probably what makes it sting a bit. Athletes like Noah Lyles almost has to have a big ego in order to have the kind of confidence it takes to perform. So having to “share” the award, or more precisely being part of the first year of a more inclusive award, has got to be a hit to the ego.

**The method for scoring the decathlon tables solves this problem.** Points are awarded to the rarity (level) of the performance. The points are calculated via a coefficient that references a huge number of real historical performances. So, it's possible to compare performances from different events using this method. So you score more as your performances reaches an (asymptotic) point, since the closer that coverges to a theoretical max, the closer you are to being the only person ever to do it. Therefore, your performances is increasingly rare, which makes it sore higher points. From there, you could be deciding how to aggregate points, whether it's via the mean of a top-5 performance per athlete or something.
But it sounds like WA has become fatally stupid.

The split does make a lot of sense, but yea should have been announced way before hand.
Also would be interesting to know how the decision is made, for example if a points decision is used, which carries more weight, a world record, a world championship gold medal etc. Also I am not in agreement that a gold medal or any medal in a relay should hold much weight as it is a "team event", hope that makes sense.
Also why was only Noah Lyles interview posted on this video? Was he the only one interviewed? How did the others feel about this? Even Faith (as she was the one listed as female athlete of the year on the web page), why was she not interviewed, or why wasn't her interview included in this video? By doing this it gives the "opinion" that in your eyes, Noahs achievements for the year are better than the other 5 amazing athletes who also won. Come on, do better.

I agree it's a poor way of handling but honestly i like the idea. I find incredibly difficult to compare performances across such different disciplines. Arguably, the marathon and the triple jump are more different than basketball and horse riding. To me, it does not dilute at all the concept of the award. If anything makes it more fair. Still, I find some problems in these categories. It's not very clear to me what out-of-stadium means (it gotta mean the marathon isn't it? did anybody care about kiplimo's 15k world record?) Also, is race-walking in this category? if that's the case why spanish alvaro martin and maria perez, both double world champions and world record holders in the case of maria, are not in the list? Is this a popularity contest or an "objective" award? Good idea, poor implementation, many doubts
