CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Miles (Paul Giamatti) waxes poetic on his favorite wine.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Alexander Payne, Sideways follows Miles (Paul Giamatti), who is distressed about his lack of success as a novelist, and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), an equally unsuccessful actor with a rapidly approaching wedding. In a last-ditch effort to sow their wild oats, Jack and Miles take off on a final road trip to California's wine country the week prior to Jack's wedding. Both men have goals for the vacation -- Miles wants to turn Jack on to the art of wine tasting, while Jack is concerned with exploiting his last days as a bachelor -- but when the two men come across two fascinating women (Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh), the duo is forced to examine their morality, and if maturity isn't such a depressing prospect -- at least, for one of them.

One of the few movies to nail how human relationships actually work, sloppy, messy, flawed, and beautiful all at the same time
BS. It all boils down to lust.
@@jeanlundi2141 Someone didn't get taken to prom.
And not worth the time or trouble, lol
I like Paul Giamatti's voice. It's simultaneously soothing and funny.
You left out the second part of the scene. Virginia Madsen is incredible here. And the way Paul Giamatti melts when she is talking then retreats again into his shell, all without saying a word, and she sees that in him, is just the best acting ever by both.
Seriously, WTF is with that cut?
I totally agree
They left off the better part of the seen. He has totally misjudged her and now here he is after giving this probably rehearsed explanation of why he likes Pinot so much and then Madsen speaks and it just levels him.
And Rolfe Kent's reflective and subtle score...all of it, makes it one of the best scenes ever filmed
@@class4081 I don't think there's anything rehearsed about his explanation of Pinot. Of course the beauty of it is that he's talking about himself.
What a great acting job. Miles is obviously describing himself as he talks about pinot, but he's also completely oblivious to why he's so obsessed with it. Or is he?
I think its operating on a subconscious level, that's how we all are basically, we think we're talking about something else, but we're really talking about ourselves. I think its a beautiful example of vulnerability.
Hi William - I’m a “Pinot Potential” fan also. Love this movie. He spoke on David Letterman & said he doesn’t know much about wine. Jonny Weiss “Back to Phoenix.” 🎶
I think he knew exactly what he was saying
Jack is definitely a Cabernet. Doesn't think too deep about anything, probably hasn't read a novel since high school, he just wants to coast through life and get drunk and laid. Even in his late 40s.
He's aware but still figuring it out too. He's slowly evolving just like fine wine.
In my opinion, this is one of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema. Every screenwriter like myself should watch this scene. 💯
Pierre Stephens I agree with you totally.....as an example of a beautiful piece of writing and acting this scene is top of my list.
Yeah except this clip cuts the best part. Her description of why she loves wine is some of the best writing ever.
One of the greatest scenes indeed. Miles describing himself, and the grape he sees a part of himself as, " temperamental, hard to grow", and the introspection is so real, one can't help but believe they are sitting there, hearing the "real" Miles in a moment of candor and transparency.....magical...
Script, directing, editing, acting. It all came together.
I know many people feel that way, but I just don't get what is so special about it. I know you'll say I'm too dumb or inexperienced or whatever and maybe you are right. But to place this above so many really amazing movie scenes is just something I don't get.
this movie is such a treasure, intelligent, touching, humorous, my cup of tea
Ebert's review on sideways as enjoyable
Or a glass of wine.
I'll see myself out.
It is a touching and humorous movie. One of my favourite Dramedies, this is way better than Spanglish
Sideways Director Accused of Sexual Misconduct by Rose McGowan.
Kristof Thibaud OMG
Me and my brother watch this whenever he comes home on leave from the military. Can't wait to watch it with him when I visit him next week.
You guys have great taste in cinema. One of my faves too.
How’s your brother doing?
He kill any children overseas yet?
If these Ladies order any Merlot? I am leaving. 🍷
@@Petey0707 c’mon man
Unbelievable acting. This move changed the wine industry for decades.
Can’t believe he wasn’t nominated for best actor
Merlot wineries T.T
I haven’t touched Merlot since
The acting between them both in this scene is off the charts and use of jazz musician Bill Evans’ music in parts of the score almost breaks my heart....Sideways could easily be my all time favourite movie.
Highly highly underrated movie. Funny, dramatic, introspective, great acting, and awesome performances. Never get tired of watching it
Underrated? Won an Oscar, along with 122 awards and 91 nominations. Maybe I am mistaken as to what you define as "underrated."
Miles is too complicated to enjoy the simple things in life.
spot on
Relatable. Analytical but frozen to exactitude instead of intuition...hence his miscue to make a move on her when he should have. His downfall is his need to project instead of follow his gut naturally.
Complicated can be good. He’s deep and intelligent, but has low self esteem and can be self sabotaging. He awakens while with this woman though. She brings that out of him.
@@MeowMixer86 right like he makes the move only after he knows it won't work. Its a self sabotage thing with him I think.
Alexander Payne has made a few masterpieces, i love his films, his cast are always on top form. This scene in its entirety packs subtle emotional punch, Madsen and Giamatti couldn’t have played these characters any better. Hard to believe it’s 20 years old now, seems so recent to me still.
I like the metaphor: That patience and persistence can build something beautiful.
Giamatti is so good on-the-method. 💕
A wonderful scene. Disarming and moving. First, he's the Pinot, then he falls in love with her, thanks to her quietly mesmerising reply (which needs to be heard in full!). Beautiful.
I’d much rather have had this won Best Picture instead of Million Dollar Baby
It’s aged much better (pardon the wine pun)
I love how he's referring to himself during this monologue.
Everyone’s missed the other allegorical reference that’s his car, a saab 900 ‘Classic’, also requires constant care and attention. A Threesome, anyone?
This movie is so good...I don’t comment normally but Thomas Haden Church is so funny. But the real reason why I’m commenting is Paul Giamatti gave the most realistic performance I’ve ever seen. And I don’t give af about wine tasting. That’s all this movies was. But somehow Paul G gave the most relatable and realistic performance ever.
One of the best hangout movies ever. I wish I was on the road with these guys.
Miles loves pinot because it's an allegory for him.
When Miles describes his affection and appreciation to Pinot, he’s really describing his inner self which is why he feels such a connection to that particular grape. And Maya is the horticulturist who can understand what kind of nurturing he needs to thrive to make a great partner in their relationship.
This is such a beautifully crafted scene by Giamatti and Madsen. I felt everything they conveyed. It’s a master class in acting.
Watch this movie, you’ll really like it... read the book, then watch the movie... you’ll fall in love.
This scene is why I don't watch the academy awards. Both actors gave heart rending monologues. Forget about winning, because that is always at least partly political. That Giamatti wasn't nominated for this is simply unforgivable. I can't believe they cut Virginia Madsen's monologue.
Dude those awards shows are a blight on every industry they represent. From film to music and even gaming!
I agree, but will add that this movie catapulted his career!
I just love this movie and Paul's acting .
Movie flew under my radar but this a great film incredible acting ..
Just watched it for the first time a few days ago, such a sleeper hit
Met Paul this week in NYC - couldn’t have been nicer
Truly one of the few scenes where the conversation actually feels completely unscripted.
This movie is brilliant. It jus goes through so many feelings and emotions. One of the best that ever came up!
"I"m NOT drinking any FUCKIN' MERLOT!!!"
Allegory of himself. Nicely done.
One of the best 5 movies ever made
Someone gave me a bottle of Merlot for the holidays. So, I had to look up some sideways clips.
Miles - “If they order Merlot? I’m leaving.” I agree with Pinot Noir! Drinking Pinot Noir 🍷 now. TH-cam - “Maria.” New Song Release! Jonny Weiss! 🌊 🎺 🎶
No going to the dark side Miles
I loved this movie. so true about life.
This cemented my stance on Paul Giamatti as an actor, he gets typecast as the comedic relief, but this movie is his best acting role ever. You feel for the guy and Paul channels the character subtlety, not forced either.
Such a great film. I watched it a second time a few months ago and was surprised to find I liked it more than I thought I would (for a rewatch). Just splendid!
So many guys are a combination of Miles AND Jack. I am one of them.
Split screen TH-cam and lower the volume to half in the new box and play. ( I never loved a man like I loved you.) while he is talking into his glass.
One of those movies where you really want to know what happened to the characters after the ending.
pardeep parkash Everytime Miles knocks on her door at the end......
Read the sequel Vertical
Well I am not sure about Jack and Christina, but in the book Miles invites Maya to the wedding. Maya shows up at the wedding and they ditch the rehearsal dinner to go hang out because according to her, "we dont belong here"
She never would have left tha voicmail if she wasn't in love with him. I think things turned out alright for miles
@baby boy ...maybe...in part 2 ?
This scene is beautiful. He shoots himself in the foot again and again. From a man's perspective he should be so unloveable but she doesn't scare easily and doesn't give up on him.
He's such a great actor. This scene was so great.
Then again He was even great in The Negotiator and he arguably outperformed Spacey and Jackson...
Miles - “Epic!” I’m a Wino. “Pinot Potential.” Jonny Weiss “Back to Phoenix.” Music Video 🎶
This video omits an important part. Before asking Miles why he's so much into Pinot, Maya had said "can I ask you a personal question?"
That's why Miles is laughing before answering. Because asking him why he's so into Pinot is not a "personal" question at all... only, the way Miles answers turns out that in fact it was a personal question because Miles by describing Pinot grapes is actually describing himself.
When I drink wine, even today, I still sometimes think about what she said.
Drinking a merlot, watching Giamatti basically describe me as a Pinot.
really enjoy this part.
I watched this movie so many times back in the day, it's just so good
I’d trade a case of 1960 Cheval Blanc for a woman looking at me the way Maya looks at Miles in this scene.
I really like this movie overall, but this is the best scene of the entire film. Just magical (although one has to have seen the rest before it to really understand why it's so good).
I relate to jack AND miles on sooo many levels.
They are every man to an extent
Best Picture. Best Screenplay. Best Supporting Actor. Best Supporting Actress. And Paul Giamatti wasn’t nominated for Best Actor. Still to this day one of the single biggest travesties in the history of the Academy Awards. His performance in this film was one of the best acting performances of the 2000s without a doubt. Thank god the Oscars don’t mean anything.
Look, its a bit of a long shot for sure but I'm low key REALLY puppy for Giamatti to win that Oscar for The Holdovers
Love this guy😎
Such a great film.
Auto caption: "Why are you so into pee now"
The dialogue in this movie is second to none
Well played thespians ...Virginia, so beautiful 🎭
What the... but... she was just about to tell him!!!
He’s obviously only talking about wine here.. nothing else. 😂
The fact that her friend lives in a trailer type of house and has a Richbourg tucked in the fridge, that would be a story on its own
Underrated film. Stunning scene!
It is clear that you don’t know what the word “underrated” means.
I couldn't help compare the blocking with this scene from Sideways and the blocking from another scene in The Holdovers thinking how Giamatti's body position is almost the exact same and how his love interest also follows the same position right down to the way they hold their wine.
What about you?
What about me?
I don’t know. Why are you into wine. Lmao
I love Paul Giamatti's acting.
I was surfing Prime when this movie came up.
It's actually pretty good.
Absolutely love this scene
Loved this scene
to appreciate fully read Ebert's review
Sideways, 2004- Alexander Payne ❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏
As it was said it How I Meet Your Mother. "This is the signal"
The most underrated movie ever.
Haha. I suggest you learn what the word “underrated” means and take a look at all the awards and rating this movie has as well as the impact it had on real life industries and businesses.
How damn beautiful is Virginia Madsen... :p
Brian E
Pretty damn ugly.
Pretty damn.
Brian E Seriously gorgeous.
I remember her from the film Candyman.
This film is like therapy
Hidden Brain brought me here 🤣
OMG why would you cut it off there??? Her monologue that begins right where you cut it off is the best part of the movie!!!!
GREAT movie.
Acting is superb but the screenwriting is brillaint!
Wine is a great way for alcoholics to mask their alcoholism.
Seems labored to me. And I can tell he's reading.
Miles would do so good micro dosing mushrooms
She was way above his league 😅
That's not how it works, except in (other) movies.
I just like to drink wine. Why destroy such a simple time tested pleasure by making it so academic?
I think Jack shares your views. “Tastes pretty good to me.” 🤣
Perfect movie.
David Camassar such a perfect movie!! One of the best guy buddy comedies
I agree on Pinot Potential. I also recommend: Shiraz, Sangiovese, and Trifecta: Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre. Jonny Weiss 🎶
Pinot Noir sales after this movie 📈
Which proves people know next to nothing about the subject, and have to take their cues from movies and media. Great movie, superb acting. Uninformed public.
That's beautiful... 🤔❤️
Virginia Madsen is so freakin hot!!!
I'M a Pino grape 😭😭😭
Nothing says friendship like two people word vomiting over drugs.
This guy also smokes the finest n rarest weed
dude was robbed for not even getting an Oscar nom that year
“Ping-pong?? Really??…”
I like Merlot better than Pino. I've known these so-called wine connoisseur snobs like this and it's so much fun to rub it in their faces
Man, what I would do to share a bottle of wine with a girl I'm interested in.. Have her hold my hand and look at me like that
Thank you Mike Nickel ! Are you looking for a wine taster? Still in Omaha Nebraska?
This is when you kiss the girl Miles
Very developed acted Paul is..
Of course, why didn't I ever think of this?
sharing the whole scene would have been better .
Excellent acting, excellent script, production etc magical film. When he misses his chance here... But luckily he got another - more rare than anything to have a second chance. Shame about the wedding though
Tremenda escena, lastima que no sepa inglés :'c
I work in vegas, i don't get impressed by pacino, de niro or day lewis..mr giamatti..that would make my day!
What's really funny about his scene is he's just making everything up. Great movie.
As he clutches his wine stem by the bowl which no knowledgeable wine person would ever do…
