From everyone I've talked to this is very common, the urge to quit because of negative thoughts. Hang in there man, go all the way and make this what you want it to be. It will be glorious.

I agree with you that neither is more high stakes than the other. A good teacher can have an enormous impact on someones life. I know that for myself, some of my teachers over the years I still remember and they really shaped my way of thinking and understanding the world.
That is definitely on part with the impact of medicine on my life.

Hey Douglas, thank you for putting your thoughts out here - I’m currently a 3rd year dentistry student, but always wanted to study medicine; so I‘m kind of in the field, but not really - you‘re helping me to find the strength in order to change my career path, which is really scary for me since I also fear the financial aspects of it…it’s good to hear from someone with the same thoughts, but continues anyways :)
I’ve just discovered you and noticed that your last video is from back in 2021 - idk if you plan to make videos again, but it’d be cool so hear how you’ve been doing and get some sort of life update, if you’re willing to share it
Thank you for the videos and especially for the one where you explain your decision to go to med school! Truly felt that and can relate so much to this feeling

As a professor myself, I would advise you to detach your emotions from your debt. U.S. doctors are well paid and a quarter million will get paid down in a reasonable time. Having a fear of debt is normal, but if you want to get the MD put that fear away until you graduate and concentrate on your studies. I would advise against a side hustle out of your field to pay interest, that is debt fear talking; use any of your extra time to do research, educate, or volunteer in your field (medicine) to strengthen your connection to your new career and your resume at the same time.

@Lance Parker, thanks for the feedback! I’m slowly getting over the debt fear and did ultimately decide not to pick up a side hustle. Hoping to get involved in writing case reports this semester. A better use of time for sure

@@MAtoMD Hi there I am considering coming to PUMS this year but I am a bit confused as to why one can only get Sallie Mae loans? on the school site, it listed one can get the US federal loans, can you please speak to this? also, have you decided to transfer?

  • @parkeld

I watch your videos because my son is considering PUMS 6 year program 2.5 years from now. I would like to hear about how the 4th year students are faring getting residencies, passing USMLE etc., especially the U.S. citizen students. Are you networking or socializing with those students to see what's coming down the road? Are you in classes with the 6 year program students?

@Lance Parker, great questions. The 4 and 6 year MD tracks have different schedules so we don’t take courses together. Re US residency matches, I haven’t directly met anyone who has matched stateside (just read the match lists). But those are necessary conversions to have, and I’m gonna ask around for contacts. Would make for a useful video

Oh and one more thing, we have a Facebook group for prospective students with current students. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here 😀 facebook.com/groups/PUMSapplicants/

Good idea! Turns out med school has quite a bit of groupwork. We often do team presentations and PBL sessions, which have largely filled that void I felt after leaving classroom teaching
