I’m 34 and just studying for the MCAT ❤ the time will pass anyway. Why not spend it doing what you love. If you’re starting later in life the bonus is you have more experience with people and maturity. Change your perception and you will change your life. Thanks for sharing your story with us! Looking forward to hearing more of your experience. 👏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽♥️

Graduated from my bachelors at 26, became a nurse this year at 27, and I am planning on enrolling to med school next year at 28. It wasn’t until I was 23 when I realized I wanted to be a doctor. I’m praying I’m making the right decision.

The first two years of med school were tough. If you’re like me, you may second guess your decision. Once clinicals begin in year three, it starts to make sense again. If I could give my younger self some advice, it would be to find meaningful clinical experiences (whether shadowing or volunteering) during first year. Best of luck

I just found this video! I'm Polish and got my Master's in English Philology at the age of 27. I was "two years late" already, on top of another 5 years of Master's. All that despite wanting to become a doctor since I was 6. Life happened. Lots of regrets. I'm enrolling in one of the best med schools in Poland as of now. I still get insecure and very regretful of the "lost time" as I feel like it contributed nothing, but I did get to travel some. People admire my courage and perseverance, but I only see negative traits that led me to NOT get into med school, which were laziness and profound procrastination skills. I feel like those 8 years of my life were meaningless and so forgetful I could just erase them from my memory. I am still, clearly, very regretful, but I REALLY need to forgive myself, because it will kill me. I'm finally at a place I wanted to be at for more than 20 years. It feels comforting to know there's someone out there who is in a very similar situation. Thank you for sharing. It helps.

Don’t regret it, trust god plan . You are more mature than before.
I am 27 with call center job and bachelor in English language and translation… i quit nursing school at 19 years old … I knew that i don’t want to be a nurse but i liked medical field… so i got depressed at that time and my family is full of stressed nurses 😂 they keep blaming and talk about me …
I worked in medical insurance field I learned alot
Medical terms + i passed first year at health school.
Yes i regret not planning for medical school before but … i have to trust the right timing… ⏱️ now ???
I decided to get a scholarship and preparing MCAT AND TOEFEL EXAMS ….
Big decision but I will do it anyway…
Med school and i will be a general doctor with double salary of the nurse. And no stress only desk job.
Yes i will be abroad but i will be proud.
Life is a beautiful journey doesn’t matter the struggles as long we have faith ❤

Thank you for this! I'm considering returning to study at 36 to train in psychology. Many years of data analysis and HR & customer service felt so disjointed and amen to the existential crises, but now I see them as preparing me for the kind of work I would do in a research or clinical field of psych. Trying to tell myself that I'm not too old, as no one is going to blink at a 40 something psychologist and I can reach that goal by 43 if I start now. Life is for the living! This video has definitely helped!

I graduated diploma in engineering in 2012, graduated diploma in Safety management few years later
and now I'm enrolled in a Bachelors in physiology to get me to qualify for med school in 3 years. Il be 30 next year.
3 kids, 2 career changes and 5 years of marriage later, it was a mistake not to study medicine straight from high school.
Now it's my turn to do it right 👍

Your background has likely shaped you in some way and can help you stand out during interviews. At age 36, Im in my third year of med school now and I find my humanities background really helps during patient interactions. Plus it’s fun being the lone English teacher in a room of science majors. Anyhow, best of luck

I have always been a successful student and excelled in my studies. I used to see myself as a doctor, and all my professors saw me as a doctor. Unfortunately, in the baccalaureate year, I was subjected to severe pressures and was not able to pass my exams as I used to. Today, I am studying engineering. Thanks God for every thing. But unfortunately I suffer from depression since then. I am studying engineering and I am sure that I am not an engineer, and that one day I will be a doctor. And I will. Today I fight for success in engineering. And my hatred for what I study hinders me. But after graduating and getting a job, I will work to save money to enter medical school and achieve my dream. And I will become a doctor as I always dreamed of.

This was everything I needed to hear tonight. Thank you! I sold two companies that I owned for seven years to pursue the MD route. I also went through many challenges throughout this process and many setbacks, and I am just now beginning my premed journey at the age of 31, going on 32.
I work inside an operating room at the Medcenter in Houston, and will hopefully attend one of the medical schools here in Houston when I apply in about two years. I very much resonated with the story you told about when you had reached the peak in your career, as that’s where I was as well. Many people questioned this decision, but I’m pursuing it no matter what. Very curious whether you were able to juggle being in a relationship while you pursued this path. That’s been very challenging for me. I can see why most people marry within the same profession. They understand the grind. Thank you for sharing your story! It gave me the boost of motivation I needed this evening.

Hi Douglas! I've been spending the last couple of days on the Internet trying to find stories of people that started medicine after a second career. Weirdly enough, I'm an English language teacher too and I really see myself in what you are saying in the video. I'm 25, originally from Italy, moved to the UK at the age of 19 and really worked hard to get to where I'm now. However, as much as I like teaching, I know it's not what I really want to be. On the other hand, this would mean abandoning my dream of travelling and teach abroad. I hope I'll figure it all out eventually. For now, thanks a lot for sharing this video and best of luck :) Claudia

Hello, I did 6 years of dentistry in Mexico, once I finished I worked for 3 years, but a desire to extend my knowledge beyond the oral cavity took hold of me. Although I consider dentists to be doctors of the mouth, the specialties do not provide a comprehensive view of human health, not even maxillofacial surgery since dentistry is practically a surgical discipline. So I decided to do a Master's Degree in Public Health, when I finished it I felt that I was already somewhat advanced to seek job opportunities that would take me beyond the dental office and I had good opportunities, however fate brought me a public medical university to my city so I decided to do medicine and now at 32 years old I am in my first year of Medicine, I will finish at 38. I have doubts if I am doing the right thing, taking into account that the last years of fresh youth will be spent studying and I am afraid of losing opportunities work, but in the long run I think I will have better rewards. Thanks for sharing your experience!!

This really resonates with me. Although I have thoughts of being a Doctor an alternative for me is an aim to be a detective. I hated school and I hated revising so I was at a crossroad choosing subjects for sixth form. Chose anything but sciences. I wanted to work in Politics and work in an NGO. I did a year experience at the Red Cross and went on to do a Master's. Unfortunately, COVID happened the year later and I was working supporting physical and mental impaired adults. I applied for NGO jobs but I didn't hear much from them, I got really frustrated but I then had a sense of clarity. I saw the hard work that Nurses and Doctors do and what I learnt from my Master's was how I can appreciate work that wasn't the case in school. I look back at my University choice somewhat in regret but I want to do something fulfilling so my aim at the age of 26 is to be a detective.

This gives me hope. I’m 21 and almost done with my undergrad degree. I was majoring in neuroscience my freshman year then I switched to film, and transferred twice 😅. Just got a revelation that I should go to med school, so I’m like “GREAT!” Hopefully, I can finish my arts degree and then take the required the pre-med courses online.
I will likely finish undergrad at 23. & Just to think, I was about to say “25 is too late for med school”

Glad it gives you hope! 25 is definitely not too old lol. The average age of first year medical students in the US is around 24. And I’ve met numerous students and working physicians who started in their late 20s to early 30s. Best of luck

Wow! Your story is almost IDENTICAL to my own. I studied ESL at university, went abroad to teach English in Asia for 7 years, 6 of which were in China as a chemistry and biology teacher. Also spent a year teaching and developing courses for the hospitals in my area to teach doctors and staff English medical terminology. The only difference is that I always knew I would return to the premed path when I turned 30, I wanted to experience a different life before I committed to medicine. For the most part, I stuck to my plan, and last year I turned 30 and returned to the states to begin my pre-med path again, taking the MCAT in a few months. I ALSO was THIS close to applying to medical school in Poland and the Czech Republic this summer, but fortunately/unfortunately, depending on your perspective, I am married and I had to take into consideration how my spouse would be able to get residence in these countries and be able to continue their career as well, which was not as feasible as I would've liked and therefore a dealbreaker. Looking forward to hearing more from you my doppelganger :)

    • @MAtoMD
      @MAtoMD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow, our paths really were quite similar! Well Poland has been adventure and I’m glad I chose this route, but studying in the US has its perks. The transition into residency will be much smoother if you graduate from a domestic school. IMGs like me have a few extra hurdles, and matching into competitive specialties is especially tough. Best of luck with your studies :)

So, I went to English Literature because that is where I got accepted. It's my field, and I enjoy learning English. But I'm thinking of re-pursue my dream to study in med school. Lmao. Just like me, these pre-med classes are not that bad. I’m a 27 year old forensic psychologist taking premed course planning to enter medicine within the next couple years. I’ve complete one semester of pre-med courses with a 4.0. I’ve learned to study during my corporate years and have become emotional intelligent which I feel like would help me as I continue throughout school. I don’t feel fulfilled as a psychologist anymore esp. with the blurred line between actual mental illness and just not wanting to live a fulfilling adult life. It’s killing me. I want to be in a position where I can actually see my difference.

    • @MAtoMD

Wasn't exactly easy, but as my younger colleagues pointed out, "you came with a vision of what you want, and often sat in the first row".

I'm 27 and currently am a Cybersecurity analyst and considered successful by my peers but I recently came to the realization that I am not happy doing this anymore. My passion for it just died as I felt like I been getting no fulfillment in what I do even though I do make an impact in my field and protect 30+ companies from cyberattacks everyday. I have access to a GI Bill I haven't used which will help me fund this for a bit. My bachelors is in Cybersecurity and I feel insecure looking around as none of my courses relate to bio, chem, or anything medicine related. I thought I may have to get a new bachelors in something applicable. I just found out yesterday about post-bac for pre med and this is where I'm currently at in the process, I plan to apply for this post bac at university of St thomas in houston for next spring, just waiting on applications to open up.

I love it! Thank you so much for your encouraging words and congratulations on getting into medical school. I really like your point of view and how positive you think about starting medicine in 30s. I myself am planning to apply to medical school and I will be 36 when I start. Your words are very encouraging to me. Do you think it would still be possible to be in surgery residency so late in the 40s? It has been my dream to become a surgeon but seeing my fellow high school classmates having made it to consultant level before their 40s, I’m having an existential crisis about becoming a surgeon late in life. Currently I have a medical research background. I would be grateful and love to hear you further elaboration on this and your opinion about pursuing surgery residency as a non-traditional student after 40s. Thank you.

    • @MAtoMD
      @MAtoMD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Lulu B Im glad the video was encouraging! Starting a surgery residency at 40 is certainly possible (even slightly older students have done it) but ofc it’s less common. Two big factors to keep in mind are your physical/mental health and desire to be a surgeon. If you theoretically finish a surgical residency at age 45-47, you’d still have 20+ years of practice provided you stay healthy, active, and love your work. Absolutely worth it IMO. Best of luck with your career switch

If you’re considering medicine or a related field, I’d recommend getting in touch with a nearby community college (the route I chose) or state college, where you can inquire about pre-health studies. Switching careers is a long path, but I’ve found that it feels much better to be working toward this goal than to be wondering “what if.” Best of luck with your journey

Hello. Im also 30 and studying civil engineering but quite not liking it. I feel like I always dreamt of becoming a doctor. I'm thinking. But I'm a single male and scared about my decision. Please some advice all I need
