My grandma born in WW2 and my mom born at the end of the USSR had “mock apple” and bean “pumpkin” pie and I am an 80s kid so they just continued to make what they knew and what was cheap

This is interesting because I remember the bean pie recipe and, bean pie or bean tarts using navy beans are actually part of the Portuguese conventual sweets! Another treat that is part is the pastel de nata, aka egg custard tart which is originally from Portugal but popularized in Asian countries.
Was already a fan of Asian sweets (beany and custard tarty alike) and now you've got me down the Portuguese sweets rabbit hole 👀👀👀👀 a whole new world... Thank you for sharing this info!!
