Great job guys! Your video brings nostalgia about my wonderful first time in Istanbul in 2010. There are a few new changes but the istanbulkart (the red one) still makes the most sense for most travelers. The Istanbul city card requires you to take a lot of public transit in order to get your money’s worth and they are only offered in a few of the machines… they did recently put a limit if 500tl per month on the red İstanbulkart so if you buy one card for multiple people and you are in Istanbul for more than just a couple days, you can hit the limit and you won’t be able to reload the card. It isn’t too big of a deal though, you just have to get a new card and start over on your limit.
You only have to tap off (for a credit) for the Marmaray line. That is the only one that credits you for unused fare and there are separate “refund” kiosks you’ll see. Enjoy your trip!
@@WaypointofView great, thankyou! I was just watching your video of Airlie Beach to Rainbow Beach in Australia - we live in Mackay where you stayed at the beach van park!! Heading to Turkiye for 7 weeks in April/May 🤩
The transport card... So me and my friend could use one card between us? And it's for trams, buses and the metro? We'll be there for five days, so how much would you suggest we put on it to get the best usage out of transportation. And, is there a similar thing for the ferries or do you just buy singles and returns each time? Thanks!
Very good, thanks! A question if I just arrive SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) airport without lira, can I buy Istanbul Kart using a credit card? Or I have to get Lira to buy Istanbul Kart at SAW (Sabiha Gökçen) airport?
Thank you for sharing! If I could ask... I am almost ready to purchase a last minute ticket to Istanbul, spur of the moment thing. Then I saw that floods and rains of the last few days. Is it still advisable to go? It would be my first visit to Istanbul, so the list includes all the classical sights.
My hotel was at the very bottom of a very very very steep hill and very very steep long steps, I could get a bus at the top and walk down, but to go back up was VERY VERY VERY VERY hard going. There was no bus that could take me without going up these steps.
I just found your account yesterday and I have been watching all your videos nonstop since then. May I please ask you how do you use your phone there? any tip is very appreciated I’m planning to visit Istanbul in the fall. Thank you so much for your time Penny
Thanks for watching! We buy sim cards from Turkcell. You can buy them at the airport, but they are far cheaper if you are able to wait until you get in the city. Hope you have a great trip!
Thank you for the beautiful video you made. He is very very helpful. I saw you go up and down the stairs when you get in and out of the subway. Don't all the stations have escalators or elevators to enter and leave the station for elderly people?
Thanks for watching! I’m not entirely sure about elevators, but yes definitely.. we have never seen a station without an escalator. 😊 Edit: we just take the stairs because we eat baklava everyday. 😂😂
I wish someone would show, how you scan your card to get on the tram. Does the tram do round trips? Or do you have to get off and back on going the other direction? IE: can you sit on the tram and end up where you got on without getting off?
Bus drivers like to skip early trips and to change routes because road is blocked by workers or traffic so I'd not wait too long for a particular bus suggested by google maps and try different route instead.
Thanks for the information. Could you please let me know few more information? Me and my wife will visit Istanbul for 6 days in November 2023 and hopefully will cover most of the Istanbul area with tram, metro, ferry and buses, if our 500 lira card balance finish then what we do next? Can this card have option for more topup cuz I heard that you can use Red Istanbul card for 1 month with 500 balance. Please guide us. Thanks & Regards,
If you reach the limit of 500tl before your trip is up, you can always get an additional red card for 70tl and start over. Since the red cards can be used for multiple people, I would just get one when you arrive and use it for both of you. If you happen to hit the 500tl limit for that card just get a second card. It will very likely still be the most cost effective option… I hope this helps! Be sure to check out our other videos on Istanbul before your trip 😀!
Awesome video! We're visiting Istanbul next month. What's the best option to go from the airport to our hotel in Sultanhamet? Will have our parents with us so less walking (with luggage) the better. Thanks
You can now take the metro from either SAW or IST airport but if you are in Sultanahmet square no later which airport you fly into it will require a couple of transfers which can be challenging with luggage. There are shuttle companies what can take you door to door or a bus service that can get you pretty close or Uber Taxi that will also take you door to door.
I would suggest ask ur hotel for pickup it’s not very pricey and worth the convenience when traveling with luggage and elderly parents ..pls do not skimp on transfer from airport to hotel and hotel to airport …metro will be hard to navigate with luggage ..make life and trip easier for parents from airport to hotel and hotel to airport … For the rest of the trip u can take trains, ferry ,bus and tram …
Nice video, thank you. Why does every ride has another amount with also digits after the decimal point to pay? I thought, there are fixed prices per ride?
Some systems charge you for the exact distance and you receive a refund at the end (such as metrobus, as the whole trip would take you from one end of the city to the other very fast, thus it is bit more expensive in comparison)
Thanks for watching! Honestly not sure about ESims specifically but we use physical SIM cards from Turkcell. You can buy either at the airport or in the city!
When I was there 2 years ago, the hardest part of the public transportation was registering/activating the Istanbulcard. Is it still that way? In your video, you just bought it, loaded it and used it. So, no more registering? I remember that took like an hour online to do it last time.
It is not necessary to tap off from any of the public transit. All fares are a flat rate. So just tap on and then you are good to go! They offer some small refund for the Marmaray train (the one that goes under the Bosporus) when you got off depending on how long you were on it… but now you have to have a registered card as a resident to get any refund on the Marmaray train. so even the Marmaray train is a flat rate for tourists.
Damn it seems difficult and time consuming getting around the city. I am planning a trip to either Istanbul or Berlin but getting it seems Istanbul is a bit chaotic.
The prices of the transportation you guys had taken had been changed... for example, the cheapest price for transportation now is 9.25 lira ... I was there last month and I spent a whole month in Istanbul
Since you are coming into SAW, you have some great options! Just recently (Oct 2022) they connected the metro to SAW. Get a İstanbulkart inside the airport and head to the metro and you have two great options depending on when you arrive. If it is during the day, You can take the metro straight from the airport all the way to Kadikoy (final stop) then a ferry to Eminonu. From there the tram station is close and you can take the tram straight to Sultanahmet. If it is later and taking the ferry isn’t really worth it, you can take the metro to the Ayrılık Çeşmesi stop where you will transfer to the Marmaray line. Take that under the Bosporus and get out at sirkeci and then hop on the tram to sultanahmet square. Honestly, just turn on the transit layer on your google maps and google will tell you exactly how to navigate with the public transit almost anywhere in the city! Also, you should check out some of our other Istanbul videos for inspiration while you are here!!!
I saw another visit stating that we need to fill out a form to obtain a HES code and later link it with the Istanbulkart. Is this still required? Also, we are staying for about 15 days, can I use one Instanbulkart for my family ( 4 )? Best Regards
You can use one card for your family and you don’t need a HES code if you are just here as a tourist. The machine will dispense the card and you will just load money on and tap in your family each time.
There are some machines that will take credit cards but the majority of the machines are cash only. For the machines that do take credit cards, I believe there is a small transaction fee when you use it to load money onto the card İstanbulkart.
Yes I do believe that all the public transit is accessible to wheelchairs. I would definitely avoid trying to take the bus or trams during rush hour just based on how crowded things get but I believe it would be manageable to use public transit. Once you get off and navigate the streets, things might become more difficult. The sidewalks and streets can be very uneven and not very friendly….

Hi guys, has the new Istanbul City Card changed things?
There are a few new changes but the istanbulkart (the red one) still makes the most sense for most travelers. The Istanbul city card requires you to take a lot of public transit in order to get your money’s worth and they are only offered in a few of the machines… they did recently put a limit if 500tl per month on the red İstanbulkart so if you buy one card for multiple people and you are in Istanbul for more than just a couple days, you can hit the limit and you won’t be able to reload the card. It isn’t too big of a deal though, you just have to get a new card and start over on your limit.

Thanks for watching! Honestly not sure about ESims specifically but we use physical SIM cards from Turkcell. You can buy either at the airport or in the city!
We are traveling from Athens to Istanbul and debating between the bus and metro from the airport to Kadikoy?we are trying to save a few $$
Which airport.. IST or SAW? :)
When I was there 2 years ago, the hardest part of the public transportation was registering/activating the Istanbulcard. Is it still that way? In your video, you just bought it, loaded it and used it. So, no more registering? I remember that took like an hour online to do it last time.
Pretty sure that was a requirement during COVID for all visitors to register their public transit cards. That requirement has been lifted!
thanks
Please tell me, is it necessary to re-apply the card when exiting transport, as happens in Dubai?
It is not necessary to tap off from any of the public transit. All fares are a flat rate. So just tap on and then you are good to go! They offer some small refund for the Marmaray train (the one that goes under the Bosporus) when you got off depending on how long you were on it… but now you have to have a registered card as a resident to get any refund on the Marmaray train. so even the Marmaray train is a flat rate for tourists.
Damn it seems difficult and time consuming getting around the city. I am planning a trip to either Istanbul or Berlin but getting it seems Istanbul is a bit chaotic.
Please, slow down when you give the information. Thank you
Is there a card for children?
Браво
Thank you for watching!
hi do we need to tap it twice (entry and exit) or just once
Just entry :)
@@WaypointofView ok thank you
The prices of the transportation you guys had taken had been changed... for example, the cheapest price for transportation now is 9.25 lira ... I was there last month and I spent a whole month in Istanbul
Can you use same card for 2 people or have to buy separate and is it can be used on all kind of public transport as shown in the video? Thanks
@@daljeetsingh9560It can be used for more than one person, it is enough to read the card for each person.
@@daljeetsingh9560u can use the sane card
Thanks for your reply I've been there yeah
Price are changing almost every month if not weeks but public transport made the traveling around easier
Hi could you please guide me the public transport from sabiha gokcen airport to sultanahmet
@waypoint of view thank you so much❤
wait, you can used 1 card for the whole group?
Yes
You sure can! 😊
@@WaypointofView Great! Thank you for reply. Good to know that the cards can be purchased at the machines.
Does the machine take debit/credit cards? Is there any extra fees?
There are some machines that will take credit cards but the majority of the machines are cash only. For the machines that do take credit cards, I believe there is a small transaction fee when you use it to load money onto the card İstanbulkart.
@@WaypointofView would you have any recommendations for the best US dollar exchange?
Would google maps figure out all these tram lines and bus stops for me?
Yep!
Which mobile network is best to use in instambul
We use Turkcell :)
❤❤❤❤😊
Doesn't show tap on tap off on buses, teams etc.
Does the machine take credit card to refill your card?
Some of the machines will take credit card but not all of them. 😀
Is the public Transport in Istanbul accessible for people with a disabilities
Yes I do believe that all the public transit is accessible to wheelchairs. I would definitely avoid trying to take the bus or trams during rush hour just based on how crowded things get but I believe it would be manageable to use public transit. Once you get off and navigate the streets, things might become more difficult. The sidewalks and streets can be very uneven and not very friendly….
The Istanbul card seems like an unnecessary extra step. I wonder why they don't just let you tap your bank card?
They do now, but the rides are more expensive that way..
Can I use one Istanbulkart for 3 people?
Absolutely! Hope you have a great trip!
@Waypoint of View Thanks dear, I am traveling somewhere new for the first time. Could you tell me any tips, Istanbul airport to Beyoglu the biancho hotel
Would I have to tap the card for each person
@@rizhossain368I would say enjoy keep smiling ,go with an open heart and mind and absorb the experience..never ever refuse the Turkish chai ..it will be offered at shops and places do not refuse if they offer u chai ..drink it and if u don’t want more just say you are full now ..but never refuse the first tea ..I had tea given at all shops I went to and I drank so many ..Turkish ppl are very hospitable …
Also from airport to hotel I would either look into a bus shuttle that’s direct to hotel or book a pickup through hotel it’s worth it …I rather not struggle with luggage at bus stops and trains ,..for the rest of the trip u can enjoy public transportation…
I was solo …I had sooo much fun and it So safe traveling as a woman alone ....google the best places to eat and sightsee …take lots and lots of pics and haggle while shopping …basically just enjoy go with the flow and make amazing memories….and also very very important make sure ur hotel has breakfast included in the price if the hotel cos u shouldn’t skimp on the Turkish breakfast ..it was included in my hotel stay and what amaaaazing spread it was …I have become so spoilt after having such fabulous breakfast daily at hotel in Istanbul that now I don’t like breakfasts served at hotels in USA …Turkish breakfast and food is to die for ..
I am so sad i have been applying a couple of times for Turkey Visa, to celebrate my Birthday in Turkey. But unfortunately i was rejected. However, i celebrated my birthday instead in Georgia where i ejoyed my journey for a week of my travel in there. Hope one day i can come to do a tour in Turkey.
Good video for people who get lost... how to find your way back to the group. Lol

There's nothing to see in Taksim Square guys. Come on!
Try not to use the buses in instanbul. It is a nightmare. Buses extra packed. Buses not to schedule. Buses don't stop. They drive like crazy drivers. Try to use metro or tram.
this guy has the most annoying accent.
