Story time about the benefits of having low friends in high places. Friend (name withheld for decency LOL) was somehow able to procure four tickets for the 60th Birthday Concert for Chuck Berry. Not finding anyone else who could make the long trip on such short notice, I was asked. Of course I said yes in a heartbeat and it was one of my better "Yes" replies. Of course Mr. Berry was the star but with a backing band that included Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Johnnie Johnson-Mr. Johnny B. Goode himself on piano. Etta James, Linda Rondstadt and one of Chuck's daughters having back-up singing duties, they could do no wrong. The audience was a bit of the who's who of the music world and then there was little old me. it was the concert of the decade. St. Louis was quite the lovely city and had amazing Italian food

I saw him perform this song and others LIVE in Seattle, WA in the late 60s or early 70s. It was part of a concert organized by a local rock and roll radio station - KJR 95 on the AM dial. The concert included Bill Haley and the Comets and the Shirelles.
I only saw Chuck Berry live once. It was about 10 years ago at The Pageant in St Louis. When he played Johnny B Goode, and everybody was singing 'go, go Johnny go...' it gave me goosebumps to see a legend in his hometown.

You're right. Chuck Berry is where guitar rock started. I saw a documentary about him. In it, he was on his way to a gig. The reporter asked about his band. He didn't have one, but there'd be one there when he got there. "But will they know your songs? " "Everyone knows my songs." And he was right. If you play a guitar, you learn almost everything you need to know by learning Chuck Berry songs.
I worked a Chuck Berry show in Alabama......It was a private party and he played with a local pick up band...Chuck was drunk at showtime and couldn't get his guitar in tune, but man it was amazing!!...Legend right there for sure....

If it wasn't for musicians like him and Elvis, we may never have had rock n roll. I was fortunate enough to see Chuck Berry and Little Richard live in 1999. They have been older but they rocked like they were in the 20's. Chuck even did his duck walk.
It's generational. My grandparents thought Benny Goodman and Big Band Music was the end of civilization.( Also Frank Sinatra). 😁I love Disco and Funk, but Rap is Crap as they say. Well my dad loved Chuck Berry just about any black rock and roll or blues entertainer and we were solid white LOL that used to play with the black group when he was playing rock and roll and sometimes country you go downtown and are small town and go to that one bar at all black people he'd sit in there and jam with them and I'm still jealous ❤️

The thing I dig about seeing old performances like this is you see the intensity of the artist. This kicks just as much ass as any Metallica set I’ve ever seen.
Actually Berry stole it from his piano player Johnnie Johnson who composed all of the music on piano which Berry converted to electric guitar. Berry never gave Johnson credit or a single royalty. Johnson was driving a van for a senior center when Keith Richards tracked him down and took him on the road as the Stones piano player for the next 20 years. Richards wanted to make sure Johnson got his due.
I didn't get to see Elvis but I got to see Chuck Berry and I am satisfied. I was lucky enough to be able to see him preform the duck walk and I will never forget it...
I saw Mr. CHUCK BERRY live 2× in the 1st in1986 had floor seats for the filming of his documentary concert in our home town ST . LOUIS, MO, it was a 4hr show with such greats as Etta James , Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Robert Cray, Linda Ronstat, and more. Chuck still had the moves. Then 5ish yrs, later for the Grand opening of the PLANET HOLLYWOOD opening which my wife and I won tickets to the outdoors concert but best all was the private after party that was closed to the public but we partied all night with movie stars and sports greats. BRUCE WILLIS , JOHN GOODMAN, JAMES CANN, MELANIE,GRIFFITH, RAMS, AND ST . LOUIS BLUES PLAYERS. BRUCE WILLIS and John Goodman join Chuck on stage and killed it. I was fortunate enough to see Chuck Berry and Little Richard live in 1999. They have been older but they rocked like they were in the 20's. Chuck even did his duck walk.

It's generational. My grandparents thought Benny Goodman and Big Band Music was the end of civilization.( Also Frank Sinatra). 😁I love Disco and Funk, but Rap is Crap as they say. Be interesting to see what the Rap generation will hate that their kids love. But a few artists like Chuck B. will transcend all time....also the Beatles and Charlie Daniels to name a few.
Well my dad loved Chuck Berry just about any black rock and roll or blues entertainer and we were solid white LOL that used to play with the black group when he was playing rock and roll and sometimes country you go downtown and are small town and go to that one bar at all black people he'd sit in there and jam with them and I'm still jealous ❤️

Actually Berry stole it from his piano player Johnnie Johnson who composed all of the music on piano which Berry converted to electric guitar. Berry never gave Johnson credit or a single royalty. Johnson was driving a van for a senior center when Keith Richards tracked him down and took him on the road as the Stones piano player for the next 20 years. Richards wanted to make sure Johnson got his due.

I saw Mr. CHUCK BERRY live 2× in the 1st in1986 had floor seats for the filming of his documentary concert in our home town ST . LOUIS, MO, it was a 4hr show with such greats as Etta James , Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Robert Cray, Linda Ronstat, and more. Chuck still had the moves. Then 5ish yrs, later for the Grand opening of the PLANET HOLLYWOOD opening which my wife and I won tickets to the outdoors concert but best all was the private after party that was closed to the public but we partied all night with movie stars and sports greats. BRUCE WILLIS , JOHN GOODMAN, JAMES CANN, MELANIE,GRIFFITH, RAMS, AND ST . LOUIS BLUES PLAYERS. BRUCE WILLIS and John Goodman join Chuck on stage and killed it.
