Machine Shop 101: Do NOT wear gloves while using a drill press. The bits have a tendency to take hold of the gloves and twist. Often resulting in the loss of fingers, hands, and sometimes arms. An easily prevented injury or death. That little dremel and stand would probably break before a working mans hands would, but for the sake of proper shop instruction please do not ever suggest gloves while using a drill press. OSHA, your WC insurance, or some other safety inspector may disagree 'til their blue in the face, I'll gladly hand them some pigskin gloves and put them in the shop. Keep in mind that if you're not capable of ripping your own caught appendage quick enough it's gonna keep taking more. Wanna use the lathe next?
Those are good tips - I was just about to write exactly the same comment! Generally using any kind of power tools and having gloves on is a risk of things getting caught up and pretty messy. And safety glasses would reduce the potential risk of parts of the casing flying in your eyes.
Super video! very good idea to use the dremel in this way to be able to fit the screen. Just one tip, in stead of taking away all the necessary material in one go, try taking it away in multiple steps. This means less stress on the material, less heat being generated, and overall a smoother finish. This will take more time, but it is definitely worth it. I sometimes work with CNC machinery, and this dremel setup is very similar.
You have no idea how much this video helps me. I needed some alternative way to close the top half of my kiwi GBC shell (raspberry pi project) and this may have just allowed me to fit a much larger screen inside. So thanks! EDIT: I also understand where you're coming from with how annoying it can be to dremel the plastic. It just boogers up and snags.
You sand down the top of the screw bracket some and you’re fine, even without it you’ll get pretty damn close. But what do I know not like it’s how I got mine to sit almost perfectly the first time
I still wish there was a 1:1 screen replacement solution. Even the Taobao GBC sidesteps these issues more neatly. **Cue the oncoming hate-storm** Still, I'll concede that everything that was wrong with this mod has been resolved, so good job with that modding community.
That Taobao LCD screen is slightly smaller than the original screen and it makes a huge noise, and most of all, it plays the games in a slightly slower speed (very minor slow down, and you have to A-B compare with the original to find out).
It will still fit neatly into the case without having to resort to drastic modification of the case and removal of the LED. And I don't know if this mod allows it, but the Taobao also allows brightness settings.
PandaXclone2 No the taobao mod won't fit perfectly either, you have to brute force to screw back when closing the housing. His previous video shows that, and I have the taobao one myself and I can confirm on this. It still needs to trim down some of the housing. The benvenn mod (or it could be the Chinese version of the adapter) also supports brightness adjusting. The downside is that the screen/viewing area is smaller than the original GBC screen.
Well to be fair, the GBA SP AGS-101 screen also has terrible speed if you go with an original one (tho re-reading I understand you mean processing delay not ghosting), so better option is to go with a new batch chinese part. Funny that the new knockoffs are better than originals but that's true. I've done classic GBAs modded with those and they did perform better (color reproduction and speed) than the original. Only thing it loses is on sunlight visibility, but well that's where the AGS-101 gets destroyed by the AGS-001 and classic anyway. To be fair I really don't know which one of the mods I prefer, I would go BennVenn cause availability, but no way I'm not giving credit to Taobao as well. All this knowledge of the signal interface makes me wonder how viable would it be to produce new drop-in screens of the original resolution, preferentially transflective, with enough people into the idea we can reduce the impact of the tooling costs significantly, and the individual part price isn't all that much usually.
Kalvinjj there's another Chinese seller who is currently developing a new screen for GBC, 1:1 pixel match, not doubling, backlit of course, but that screen is actually a little bit bigger than the GBC original (slightly bigger, like 1 mm wider). He said he got the prototype working but he's still tweaking around and will start to sell them in the future.
Get rid of that Dremel drill press asap, Ive had 2 fall apart... replaced them with a used 335.25926 craftsman. off craigslist. Its basically the same thing only all metal.
Wow, awesome followup. I love the Gameboy Color Light lens. That is an amazing finishing touch for this mod. I might actually do this one now... but with a premodded shell.
thanks for the update! I've been unsure about the bennvenn mod for a while, and have an extra front light + loca (applicator) sitting in my apartment for a few years now debating to do this ... well, order a custom one. But interestingly enough, because of brexit, it'll be cheaper to order from retromodding and ship to Europe, than ordering from Jellybelly ...
Removing the screen's frame is one of the steps that was necessary for my classic GBA with AGS-101 screen mods. Tho on my mods I removed both metal shell parts of the screeen, as it does hold itself well without the back one (if removed carefully) when assembling back the modded console, and no need to fuzz around with the components, as the necessary cuts to shell and small trimming of the risen frame of the screen is enough to make the new screen fit. Heck I would bet I wouldn't even need to sand down the inner small inserts if I had removed the metal frame in 1st place (as it has the exact same internal structure). Also hell yeah that back sticker!
To help with milling - get a machinist jaw for smaller parts to clamp it in. It will help cool the shell a bit and it makes it more heavy and therefor easier to handle under the milling bit!
holy cow, this shows how far you're willing to go in order to close a gameboy shell, if that isn't passion and commitment i just don't know what it is!
If you have a spare lens keep that attached while you are using the Dremel it'll help keep the frame flush and not war because the glue will hold and take most of the Heat as well as the additional plastic on the screen
Damn it’s like every time I think the backlit GBC is dead because of some problem, it comes back with a vengeance. Want light in your GBC? Try a frontlight! Frontlight not bright enough? Try the Kitsch-Bent backlight kit! Too washed out? Buy a clone console! Not the right aspect ratio? Buy a modded GBC from Taobao! Too expensive/not enough stock? Stuff an AGS-101 screen in there! Shell doesn’t close properly? Here’s a custom milled shell and some 3D printed brackets! No more power indicator light? We fixed that too! This search for the perfect backlit GBC has been a wild ride from start to finish. Now if we could only find another warehouse full of those AGS-101 screens, so people would stop destroying perfectly good GBA SPs, everything would be perfect.
This Does Not Compute Well I guess that means everything IS perfect. How long have they been around? I just recalled in your video about where all the GBA backlit kits went, that you proposed a theory that someone had just found a warehouse full of unused screens and that they ran out (funnily enough that was the first video to introduce me to your channel). Have you talked about these reproduction screens in any of your other videos? Are they the same aspect ratio as the original? I’d love to know more
I'm so happy to hear that this has become an easier mod to complete. I managed a while back to build the backlit GBA mod via Retro Modding, but I would love to one of these backlit dedicated just to GB/GBC games. =)
Awesome video! I have done a couple 101, amp, and speaker modes to the GBA, but as far as GBC I have only done the front light. Totally going to do this to my GBC now. Glad you but this kinda stuff out there for those of us that enjoy modding and soldering.
dudeeee no way i did the same thing as im not a tech-y guy so i couldnt mod that stuff my self but once obtaining the money from work, i just had to buy a jelly belly custom GBC! I cant wait for it to arrive in the post. What colours did you pick for the case cover and buttons?
Yeah! A lovely dude by the name of Toruzz did a full colorization hack a few months ago. It's called Super Mario Land 2 DX, and I gotta say, it's the best way to play SML2 in my opinion. He even added Luigi as a playable character!
Awesome video and the result is the beautiful screen on your Game Boy Colour. It some how transformed the video game (Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins) from the earlier colour to full colour. Keep up the good work and thank you for uploading this footage.
Really nice video, Love how you make and create products like this, You have the GB Colour from China only this is way better option. Keep this up I love your channel !
now I have to get one done it been a while but glad to see this done and you did most of the work for me thank dude your awesome on my way to build one myself
Now there's an even better kit. It's called the freckle shack. Can you do a vid installing and reviewing that kit? No soldiering and minimal modding of the shell
I think the best idea for this mod would be 3d-printed screw holes that attach themselves, or maybe even gluing magnets on each side to hold them together without sacrificing repairability
If only there is a better 160x144 lcd, websites and companies only offer 160x128 displays all the time. But it did well using the 240x160 sp display and center the image on the screen with only 8 pixels from top and bottom removed and 40 pixels from each side removed by covering them up. Then about the case, I do not wish to dig into my clear-purple colored shell so I might want to simply frontlight it or there is a way to backlight the display if I peel the right set of layers and insert the light that way.
well if you go with ANY screen mod you'll need to mod the case as well, front lights will need at least some small inserts cut for the front light wires. To be honest from what I've seen, I wouldn't really recommend it either (well you can see on Colin's videos how it turns out).
Yeah, I just mean that since he doesn't want to mod his own case, he would need a new case regardless of which mod he goes with. Either do the cuts, or get a new case, whatever mod it is.
I sure would agree, specially with the new tabs. Unless of course one has great tools at disposal and wants some color not available on the pre-modded ones. Heck that front glass and the modded back sticker alone would justify it!
Seems like you might have better luck using a small cutoff wheel or some nippers first, then switch to the end mill for shaving it down after the bulk is cleared.
Fascinating modding...... If you the already prepared shells wouldn't have been available, I would have suggested that you might do the milling in a little bowl of water, whatever would fit under the machine. This way, you could have been working at highest speed without melting damages. And the debree would have been flushed aside for better view. Anyway, I like the engineering level of that thing.
I love this mod, so glad you've perfected it! it'll be funny if Nintendo releases a renewed gameboy color classic or something that plays original cartridges and has a backlit screen though :P
I’ve been eyeing a GBC backlight for quite some time. Now with all the new screens I don’t know which I should get . From McWill , Freckle Shack , Ags 101 , and TaoBao . Someone help me decide . Thanks !!!!!
will Retro Modding mod a exsisting GBC? I have one im ordering a new shell for and im curious if i can sned it in after I replace the shell for the screen mod
I understand that back in the 90's, technology was not as advanced as today in the sense of the picture quality screens from any handheld, but man, imagine if every handheld out there came originally with this type of quality picture screen? I would have in my possession the game gear, atari lynx, neo geo pocket color, gameboy color and so on.
Do you know where a good backlit Game Boy Color could be bought? Jellybelly is out of stock, and I see no place on the website to get in contact with them to call or email them about the Backlit being re-stocked. I would really love this piece, but I don't know the first thing about refurbishing and stuff. Nor would I like to buy the type of machines stated in the video to just make this one thing. I would really love your help, thanks very much! If you can't help, its fine! Loved the video!
Hey. This video was published on my B-day, in my mind, I want to mod my GBC with that glorious screen. I enjoy GB+GBC games, quite a lot. I'm going to do all the modding myself, I already have the donor console and 101 screen, haven't bought BennVenns ribbon adapter yet.

luckily its just a dremel ;) serious tho in some cases wearing gloves is more dangerous
Colin, you’re SO thorough. Awesome video.
Now I absolutely need a GBC Light.
vc por aqui izão
Please get one and make a video on it!!!
"oooh, Colin, spank me Colin, spank me with your back lit GBC *COLIN* !!"
Get a room 🙄
ironically your username fits perfectly to this comment.
Izzy Nobre Would it satisfy the problem with your thrown out GB Micro?
The plastic milling scene was much more fun than I could've imagined.
I’m honestly impressed with the level of commitment you had to getting the original housing to work 🙌🏾
You need a cork sheet under the plastic to keep it steady.
Wearing gloves and using a rotary tool are not the best workshop practice. A pair of safety glasses would have been an better option.
Those are good tips - I was just about to write exactly the same comment! Generally using any kind of power tools and having gloves on is a risk of things getting caught up and pretty messy. And safety glasses would reduce the potential risk of parts of the casing flying in your eyes.
The dremel montage is so bad ass. Its like you're working on an old GTO
Super video! very good idea to use the dremel in this way to be able to fit the screen. Colin, I have to say that your videos just keep getting better and better.
absolutely stunning! glad to see it finally fit together. here's to hoping that game boy color lights become easier and more widely available!
Awesome cinematography in this one! Loved the slow-mo shots when using that dremel set up!
Long story short: buy pre-modded shell ;p
You can pretty much the same thing with flush cutters....
Nicholas Kormanik yeah, sure... 00:40
You really can't.
flush cutters are gonna get you nowhere
You sand down the top of the screw bracket some and you’re fine, even without it you’ll get pretty damn close. But what do I know not like it’s how I got mine to sit almost perfectly the first time
Man I'm more and more impressed with your composition. The way you setup your shots times nicely with your narration. Good job man
Nalu Rash I agree 100% legitimately professional production value.
I still wish there was a 1:1 screen replacement solution. Even the Taobao GBC sidesteps these issues more neatly.
**Cue the oncoming hate-storm**

The "Gameboy Color Light" logo on the glass is just the perfect cherry on top.
Best montage music (during the milling sequence).
A great way to finally finish of this mod. Well done.
Wow, awesome followup. I love the Gameboy Color Light lens. That is an amazing finishing touch for this mod. I might actually do this one now... but with a premodded shell.
If you pay attention, you can see it's also not just the lens, the back sticker is custom with new custom text too!
You said it wasn't possible... you proved yourself wrong!
I like it :-D
thanks for the update! I've been unsure about the bennvenn mod for a while, and have an extra front light + loca (applicator) sitting in my apartment for a few years now debating to do this ... well, order a custom one. That dremmel scene was unbelievably fun 😄
Loved the Metal music! Your desire for solving the Gameboy color backlight problem is second to none.
Man that sanding process bit was so sexy to watch.
Awesome finish quality. And awesome backlit quality, makes everything so vivid.
That screen is AMAZING!
You never cease to amaze us with your craftsmanship Colin. Great tutorial!
You really polished this modification into a professional upgrade!
That montage felt like a cheesy Home Depot commercial
In a good way though.
Please never change that awesome theme song!
So much effort, pretty insane! You must really want that screen in that GBC 'no, you will fit!'
That milling montage so sooooo satisfying!
Removing the screen's frame is one of the steps that was necessary for my classic GBA with AGS-101 screen mods. Also hell yeah that back sticker!
Do all the GBC’s you get from retro modding come with a white border around the screen?
Man you really went all in on this build for the love of gameboys good work 👍
To help with milling - get a machinist jaw for smaller parts to clamp it in. It will help cool the shell a bit and it makes it more heavy and therefor easier to handle under the milling bit!
That screen looks gorgeous.
This is exactly the solution I'm looking for. I wasn't happy with the last solution--fantastic!
holy cow, this shows how far you're willing to go in order to close a gameboy shell, if that isn't passion and commitment i just don't know what it is!
I need that Dremel workstation. I didn't know those existed. This changes everything
If you have a spare lens keep that attached while you are using the Dremel it'll help keep the frame flush and not war because the glue will hold and take most of the Heat as well as the additional plastic on the screen
That Dremel action was so satisfying

Actually, reproduction AGS-101 screens have been around for a while and are readily available. No need to scavenge one out of an original console.
I’d love to know more
Wow. This looks nice and clean. Might be the replacement for my backlit DMG and front lit color.
I simultaneously think this is both ridiculous and amazing.
Wouldn't it be easier to buy a GBA SP AGS-101 instead?
I'm so happy to hear that this has become an easier mod to complete.
I managed a while back to build the backlit GBA mod via Retro Modding, but I would love to one of these backlit dedicated just to GB/GBC games. =)
Funny going back to these videos now that we have the greatly improved IPS kits
Awesome video! I have done a couple 101, amp, and speaker modes to the GBA, but as far as GBC I have only done the front light. Totally going to do this to my GBC now. Glad you but this kinda stuff out there for those of us that enjoy modding and soldering.
Amazing man. So awesome. We gotta do another segment or 2 soon.
Nice one! This is one of my favorite TDNC videos now.
Great production value. Channel going from strength to strength.
Don’t forget safety glasses/eye PPE!
Fantastic modding there. This is the stuff I like watching be awesome to see you undertake more projects.
Nice camera shots! You're really improving your videos! :D
this mod looks amazing and your tutorials are easy to understand, one day i would really want to try this mod! Overall just an amazing video!
7:38 i would not call this a perfect fit, there are gaps all over the shell
This was long overdue, Colin. Glad you did it, though.
YOU ARE THE MAN IN GAMEBOY MODS.
THE GAMEBOY TEACHER*
Looks great. We need Wiggyx to start producing some custom housings made for these screens!
Glad to see this mod is actually good now. Before it was pretty incomplete
I bought a GBC Light from JellyBellyCustoms and I couldn't be happier...
dudeeee no way i did the same thing as im not a tech-y guy so i couldnt mod that stuff my self but once obtaining the money from work, i just had to buy a jelly belly custom GBC! I cant wait for it to arrive in the post. What colours did you pick for the case cover and buttons?
7:42 what kind of flashcart do you use to run mario land 2 dx? I've heard everdrive is incompatible to this mod due to power requirement
What palette are you using on Super Mario Land at 7:48?
Did you try using one of the stone grinding bits for the dremel?
Seems like something that could be designed and printed via a 3D printer
That Super Mario Land 2 with color @ 7:40 is looking amazing!
Yeah! A lovely dude by the name of Toruzz did a full colorization hack a few months ago. It's called Super Mario Land 2 DX, and I gotta say, it's the best way to play SML2 in my opinion. He even added Luigi as a playable character!
Your production quality and editing has always been great, but this has to be one of your best videos. Top marks!
Why not just get a Advance SP 101? I find them a lot here at our local retro store for 30 bucks on average
I think the best idea for this mod would be 3d-printed screw holes that attach themselves, or maybe even gluing magnets on each side to hold them together without sacrificing repairability
You are the real life Otacon ! 😆
Kalvinjj you can buy a shell for this backlight
Yeah, I just mean that since he doesn't want to mod his own case, he would need a new case regardless of which mod he goes with.
Either do the cuts, or get a new case, whatever mod it is.
Kalvinjj I think buy 101 lcd gbc shells are a better option
I sure would agree, specially with the new tabs. Unless of course one has great tools at disposal and wants some color not available on the pre-modded ones.
Heck that front glass and the modded back sticker alone would justify it!
how many rpm was the dremel good for the housing this information would be very good
Seems like you might have better luck using a small cutoff wheel or some nippers first, then switch to the end mill for shaving it down after the bulk is cleared.
Never wear gloves when using a rotory tool THAT close to your fingers! Very dangerous
Jesus. You didn't say that WE would be needing ear plugs too! Lol. I'm used to the music on your channel being someone mellow. 😂
Why you didn't print the whole back shell of the Gameboy Color?
wish i had that setup when making my gbc lights! I just used my dremel and a lot of time
Does the infrared light still work?
Is there a new to buy this already assembled?
finally the GBC has been perfected , thank you ,Awesome video
To keep the plastic from melting you could hook up a bucket of water to slowly leak onto the drill bit.. maybe
Wow, that's a lot of work.
That's amazing. Great video. Loved the milling music lol
This video seems overdue
I had to wait for it to get above freezing in the garage.
This Does Not Compute I think where I live we've seen all 3 seasons in 3 days haha
will Retro Modding mod a exsisting GBC? I have one im ordering a new shell for and im curious if i can sned it in after I replace the shell for the screen mod
I understand that back in the 90's, technology was not as advanced as today in the sense of the picture quality screens from any handheld, but man, imagine if every handheld out there came originally with this type of quality picture screen? Oh man , thats dedication ! thumbs up!
Fantastic and VERY professional
Does the power switch lock into place, or is it loose?
