The GB Boy Colour only has one issue that makes it different from the performance of the original Gameboy Color. It only came up from testing the GB Video Player, which really pushes the limits of the hardware. The quick switching of color palettes sometimes leads to the incorrect colors being displayed (only slightly off though.) Either it's a problem with the cloned CPU or a problem with the FPGA/CPLD driving the backlit LCD. And the screen tearing only occurs because the display isn't scaled on an exact integer vertically. Because it's from China, Nintendo really can't do anything about it, so it's not going away anytime soon unless people stop buying it.

GB Color Fake haves different resolution and did notice some problems with different systems. I think you can rather buy original GB Colour with LCD upgrade don't you think so Retro Dodo. Yes it's 3x times the price of the GBC only you have a really great upgrade ?

Spot-on choice, giving a review with the closest matching real version you could find down to the color. I think it's the first review of that kind I've seen, but my memory sucks anyway XD I deliberately got the Crystal Green version of the GB Boy Colour, after researching and finding that it appeared to be the only one that didn't have a matching variant of the real Game Boy Color. Oh, the GBCs do come close, but even the neon green ones just don't get quite as shockingly bright in my opinion; I wanted it to stand out lmao This thing is lightyears better than the GB Boy Pocket, no ghosting, backlight, and the only trade-off is a slightly distorted aspect ratio I have to admit though, it seems like it might have some small issues. When I play Donkey Kong Land on mine, the graphics glitch up from time to time, making stages look slightly corrupted. Similarly, on my Game Box Advance, the unit doesn't have enough memory to play full movie cartridges. But I guess you can't win them all.
Nice review..I bought mine back in June '18..I watched all the videos I could find before purchasing it..I probably watched the Brandon one too..dropped to £30 at the time..I snapped it up..it was the general opinion the screen is backlit regardless of the box print..yes its wrong aspect ratio..but you can actually play games you can see..unlike my genuine GBC which strained my eyes..I dunno how we tolerated Nintendo unlit screens..I can't bear it..yes colour screens for modding are great..but still a bit too expensive and there's emulation for cheap and convenience..and I also wonder how Kong Feng don't get sued..I thought it'd be off the market by end 2018..and the flip/clamshell version too..they must have friends in high places..good luck to them..specs
The GB Boy Colour is a real GBC hardware clone. It has to use an external FPGA chip to translate the signals for the LCD. Someone could probably mod it to output video, like VGA or HDMI.
Awesome video. The GB Boy is so cool! Would have changed the D-Pad to a original Colour or Pocket D-Pad (easy mod). Could you see if you could find a similar GBA clone system? Cheers from Norway!

It had built-in games, could play cartridges, had an SD card slot, a good backlit screen, and could hook up to a TV with composite. It also had a 4:3 aspect ratio like the GB Boy Colour. I wish I'd gotten that version; by the time I discovered it, the newer model had come out, with all the good features removed; it only has the backlit screen with adjustable frequency left over, and nothing else. And even that has gone extinct now, so basically I have a rare GBA SP clone I guess. But I'm not selling XD
CONS: The head phone jack does not work. The remote thing at the top does not work. The plastic is cheap and can be broken if dropped. Screen lens is easy to scratch. PROS: Plays all GB/GBC games. Nice bright screen. Very responsive buttons. Over all it is good for what it is and a fantastic way to play your old games on a budget. I would not pay anything over $30 - $35 CAN.
Thanks for the video. You started off with some really positive feed back and by the end of the video you said 'If you want something you can throw away.' That went down hill. And if anyone is interested the different ratio is actually really nice. I now prefer it over the orig letter box aspect.
It does distort horizontal lining though. Remember the flicker he mentioned when moving up and down? That's due to the pixels growing and shrinking because of the stretching. It doesn't happen to vertical lines when you move left and right, but the screen tearing exists there as well (I personally don't mind it too much).
How did you find the T-shaped button worked when trying to move game characters diagonally, no just up and down? I have heard that it was a bit difficult in some games such as sports games. Thanks.
The GB BOY is an exact copy of the original Game Boy Colour (color) but i dont like how it would copy-cat without having permission but i do like the additional games loaded internally which is a good idea as well as allowing to play OG Game Boy and GameBoy Color games
the only problem I have with mine is that the cartridges must be sooooo clean for this thing to pick them up, also, for whatever reason pokemon crystal has some weird crashed that just don't happen in any of my original gameboys, but hey, it's one game in my whole library, all the other games are perfectly fine
Another solution is to align the cartridge right with the top of the console. Mine rarely takes games that are inserted all the way; it works best when the tops of the cartridge and console match perfectly. Try adjusting it to different fits; they seem to be different. Maybe Pokemon Crystal will work if you try this too.
I use to have one and if you let your cartrige inside for a dau, it would erase your save, first I belived the battery was dead but it did it with another game with a new battery. Dont know how but it take some juice from the battery in the cart and this is deffinitly not good.

I love my GBBoy, works so well and when playing the slight difference in aspect ratio isn't really a problem, it's only a problem when my brain reminds me that it's off a little bit. Also modding the original GBC dpad in makes it feel great, but there is also something to the rounded dpad too.
PSA for everyone: the infrared ports on the GB Boy Colour do not work; they're just a strip of black with no circuits under the shell. It's only for decoration (and probably to fool potential buyers).
What about the back battery compartment why didn't you open it and show it ? Does it take 2AA batteries ? I and I'm sure others would really like to know.
Nintendo stops suing bootleg and after market consoles when they no longer are in production. At that point, Nintendo has finished making and mass distributing Gameboy Colors. After they discontinued the Gameboy Color in 2003, we started seeing a lot of repro/bootlegs being made. It’s when a company like Nintendo is for example making a Switch console while it’s still in production and hasn’t been discontinued that it’s worth suing over. Think about it: the hot new consoles out and people are making cheep bootleg consoles that are imitations of the real thing. Nintendo loses money. They won’t lose money for something they discontinued many years ago. It’s a fair game too and up to the consumer to decide if they want real or fake for financial purposes or they just want it cheap and ready to use. So, post 2003, Nintendo won’t bother suing repro companies because they’re busy working on the next thing and it’s time and money wasted suing people and paying lawyers. For a video game console company a loss of money is major.
I just noticed from 3:34 (th-cam.com/video/j95K2YiourI/w-d-xo.html&t=214) and on while you go through some of the builtin games in the list that it at the top states "COLOR GAMEBOY 188 IN 1"... have you gone through and checked which number is correct? the 66 IN 1 stated on the packaging or the 188 IN 1 stated in the actual firmware?
Imma be honest...You're tempting me to spend my money on Retro Stuff,specifically for a Game Boy or Game Boy Colour. I never had one,it would be cool to explore the past. I think the only reason why people pay attention to the viewing angles is because the backlight on the screens makes it more obvious. I don't even get what the big deal is for handhelds. So what if there's a bad viewing angle? Are you playing the games with the console turned diagonally away from your face? Are you tilting it toward the floor? No, you're looking at it straight-on. So when people complain about it I can't help scoffing.
I really just want another version of the odroid go that has no screen tearing and a pixel perfect screen for gb and gbc. Like if they did that, maybe a rtc battery i would buy it in a heartbeat. I honestly don’t love the new emulator consoles because they try to be a jack of all trades without mastering one thing. Just give me an odroid go gbc with amazing gbc and gb emulation. I’d pay $50 no problem.

I bought a gbc and im gonna buy the ips mod and i think is worth it, looks pretty good imo and no tearing

A lot of people, like Rerez, appreciate a properly pivoting dpad, but I'm one of those who can make do even with a full button dpad.

66 is the correct one. The list on the GB Boy Colour loops three times.
