    I can't wait for the tanganyikan cichlids part. Malawi tanks are really popular and some of the TH-camrs that I like owns or discusses them. I wish Tanganyikan tanks are discussed more often.

    Perfect timing on this topic. Over a year ago I saw Keeping Fish Simple’s tour of Adrian’s fishroom and it introduced the Saulosi to me. I’ve been obsessed with the idea of a tank of them ever since. I’ve finally found a breeder in Texas.

    Great podcast. Wanting to set up an African cichlid tank is how I found you guys in the first place. I have followed both of yours advice dealing with African cichlids and I have one of the best tanks I have ever had. Can’t wait for part two.

    I played it safe and stocked my 75g tank with yellow labs and yellow-tail acei.... and I couldn't be happier! They are beautiful and entertaining. They have so many interesting/funny behaviors and tons of personality. There's never a dull moment in the tank. There's non-stop action, but no hardcore violence. I gave them lots of rocks and a white sand bottom. I absolutely love these fish!

    What a great podcast. I’ve kept Aquariums for over 20 years always planted communities different fish over the years. After watching both TH-cam channels I started a 75 gallon cichlid tank with 12 in total so far 5 yellow labs, 5 acei, and 2 red zeb (all around 2 inches). Goal is to get around 20. Your videos aloud me to feel comfortable to keep them. Thanks for your experience based advice and commentary.

    Very informative episode! I keep a low tech planted community tank but enjoy learning about African Cichlids too!

    Had a mixed African tank 20 some years ago, went to reefs. Then got out. Got back in during covid and have several high tech planted tanks. I now find myself back with cichlids again. There’s something about them. And I don’t mind not having to do all the trimming and manicuring on these tanks.

    It's like your talking another language. Normally I can picture the fish you're talking about but this one I was in the dark. Very interesting and enjoy learning.... But now I have to look them up.

    You should dedicate Part I to Lake Malawi, Part II to Lake Tanganyika, and a Part III to the African riverine cichlids, which in many ways are more like the New World cichlids … and therefore cooler. 😎

    Myswell get a canister if you need 2 hobs on the back for flow. The canister lets you position flow how you want it. And for the price of 2 tidal 55s you are getting into canister filter territory.

    When you talk more in part 2 I hope you guys cover the pros and cons of having females in the tank more. There’s a lot of debate about what’s the best way to keep these fish. There’s no doubt that a male in breeding dress is the most colorful fish you’ll ever see. But should be have females in the tank?

    I'm sitting here listening to all the Cichlid horror stories while watching my calm, peaceful 20 long with a herd of Ember Tetra's, Astro (The Blue Phantom Pleco), Emmitt (The Clown Pleco), Fric & Frac ( Reticulated SAE), 2 Oto's, 5 Orange Laser Cory's and 4 Mystery Snails. No drama, just happy fish.

    I LOVE MY AFRICANS! I love my victorians too but I am rehoming both my pairs today to a breeder who wants to make a huge turnaround with them. Peacock are some of the most gorgeous fish with some of the most colour and diverse species even females have a charm to them. Mbuna are my favourite in particular just because they tend to be more of group and if you like it or not they are going breed and breed, Making for a tank full of life all the time! I personally have mixed all 3 of peacocks, Mbuna and haps with no issues AFTER I learned that both the Mbuna and peacock have reverse opinions on male female in a tank, Mbuna leaning towards being more accepting of it despite internal feuding with in the group but usually only results in coloured up males and “beta males” that colour down. Peacocks however can be the same but if sufficient space is not given, they will chase the others to the point where they usually try to hide and or isolate themselves and that can be fatal for a peacock cichlid. Haps I would avoid male female in a community tank just because the are going to be more aggressive and are larger on average than most peacocks. But if you have predator haps you can’t have Mbuna and peacocks can be hard due to smaller stature and lack of ability to defend themselves. Haps will be less aggressive on average but it will depend on the fish. Cichlids are incredible in almost every front, I have my favourites but I love seeing them all! Great episode and thanks for sharing! Stay happy and healthy my friends!

    I don’t hate the look of male Auratus cichlids. They are nuts I’ll give you that.But when they have spawning color on? I think they look pretty darn good. But I respect your opinion of course. Great podcast guys. Keep ‘em coming. I listen at work a d it helps get me through part of the day at least.,,,,,

    Kinda off topic. It’s been years since I had a cichlid tank, but they were in a 90. I had lots of rock work, but didn’t worry about it because the 90’s glass was thick. I’m getting ready to set up a 75 with sand and again, lots of rock work. My concern is the thinner glass of the 75. Would it be wise to put down some sort of padding or egg crate under the sand. My concern is the fish digging, and causing the rock to make contact with the bottom glass. Thanks as always.

    • @jerrygoebel9152
      @jerrygoebel9152 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'd go with the egg crate. I have a 55 with mbuna and for all that they dig there's no way the rock can touch the glass. Put down the egg crate, then the rocks that will rest on them, then your sand or small gravel, and then build upwards.

      Maybe a little bit for peacocks it wouldn’t be a tank you would want to look at. For mbuna it would be cool though.

      My mbuna leave my anubias alone and I have house plants filtering the water too. They ate every other plant I had in the tank. They'd leave some plants alone but then eat them weeks or months later. Anubias is the only one I've had luck with, in the water

      @@bwood4505 I had planted tanks before and it's not really for everyone. I had a hard time keeping most of the plants alive. Keeping them alive and arranging or managing them is actually much time consuming too. Yes, I do regular water change with my Tanganyikan tank but definitely not as time consuming as managing planted tanks.

    • @bwood4505
      @bwood4505 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@allangumiran8327you are correct, plants take just a little extra effort to thrive. I find the extra effort on my part is worth it. I’d hate to have to live in a desert with no trees or plants so I won’t make my Aquarium friends do that either. PLANTS make the tank a home vs a glass box with just water.

      You could still do riparian plants like Pothos.
