One other exception to the nano fish personality thing is the pea puffer. My group of peas come darting over to the glass as soon as they see me and the pea I had years ago would play with the cat through the glass. The only fish my cat took interest in and I think that’s because the pea actually tried to interact with him.
You need to take into consideration the cost of FOOD for your fish and the cost of FILTRATION... SMALL FISH are alot less money to feed. They eat all of the small food particles that will cause your water to need alot of FILTRATION.. that can also be costly . BIG FISH are just more expensive to maintain over small fish.
Interesting subject, obviously it depends on everyone’s individual preference but I would disagree with something; the argument tended to compare schooling Nano fish to individual monsters. For example the wet pet characteristics of a silver dollar and a cardinal are mildly the same - they’re not individually personable but an Oscar and a cardinal is no question. I think it would be fairer to consider the personable traits of something like Betta or sparkling Gourami and other Nano fish with more wet pet star quality. Same with the beauty. A school of cardinals was used as an example but if you simply compare the fish itself - take size completely out of the question and inspect the beauty of the individual fish and you would find the cardinal tetra to be simply stunning. In fact I would argue that there are more beautiful Nano fish than monster fish. But monster fish have size and that wow factor is their attraction. That’s just my own personal opinion though. Really great conversation!
johns the man , but prime time aquatics videos put me in a trance lol , the way he speaks and explains things just makes me feel comfortable 😂😂😂 keep up the work guys!!!
I’m more in the middle ground where the fish aren’t too small, but also not too big so they won’t destroy my aquascape, and I can still fit 75 of them in my 240 gallon. My “nano” fish would be my serpae tetras and cories, while my “big” fish are my denison barbs that range from 4 to 6 1/2 inches. The “monster” in my tank is my 7 inch striped raphael catfish. I’d love to keep oscars someday but I’d only feel comfortable putting like 3 of them at the most in my 240, and I’d get bored of having a huge tank with only 3 fish pretty quick.
I have sparkling gouramis that are happy to eat off of my fingers and while they're doing that the CPDs and chilis are an inch away grabbing the scraps. Very fun to feed.
Former large fish keeper turned nano lover. I enjoyed the Oscars, but I really enjoy now having whole ecosystems. From mosquito larve, to the CPD's and shrimp that live off them. Both reproducing and living unique lives. Keeping the 75 gallon for a goal of a massive colony of Mountain Minnows and CPD's with all my cull Shrimp. I'm sure I'll be back, miss my severum
Love my tetras and cories in my planted tank, especially after enduring days long power outages 2 winters in a row. Tank temp was in the 50s and lost zero fish. I don’t think cichlids would have made it as much as I would love to have a tank of angels again.
Speaking of price of nano fish, Celestial pearl danios are running around $8 to $9 each around here. I haven't been able to get my hands on any quality breeding stock either, the ones I saw most recently were clearly infected with some sort of microsporidian or internal parasite.
20:05 I must be in a VERY SMALL percentage of people who LOVES there fish tank and doesn't find much enjoyment out of feeding I have a discus tank and I love sitting there watching the beautiful fish the most relaxing thing EVER!!! ... But I have to say I do like to watch the smaller fish in smaller tanks eating
I mostly keep nano fish and I agree that they can have a TON of personality. Remember, Bettas are considered Nanos! But my Bumblebee Gobies come up to me to be fed, along with my pigmy cories love to glass surf whenever I'm near the tank. I also have dwarf Rasboras (people mix them up with Pheonix ones here in Australia so you can end up with both in the one batch when buying!) And they chase me whenever I approach the tank. I also had many Bettas in the past, all of them had incredible personalities.... small fish can have some quirky behaviours towards you just as much as the big guys!
Interesting take on the feeding part. I gravitate towards larger fish but watching small fish zip to the top one after another to eat is so cool to watch.
I love monster fish, but have really enjoyed my nano setups lately. However, I do think I have found a good compromise if you want the personality of the big fish but the small scale of a nano. Puffers! Well, specifically dwarf puffers. They have just as much personality as the big guys (in my humble opinion) but stay at the size of a nano fish!
To control aggression among large American cichlids, you can try these strategies: Overcrowd the tank Slightly overcrowding the tank can help distribute aggression among more fish. However, this will increase the frequency and size of water changes and filtration.
I'd say mid sized fish for me 3 to 8 inches mainly due to space constraints. I'm also odd apparently don't watch my fish eat just toss the food in on my way out the door unless i think ones having an issue then I'll observe.
These podcasts are recorded a couple of weeks in advance, usually several in one day, depending on John and Jason's schedules. A lot of "news" wouldn't be new.
I just started assembling my first 6ft tank. I started this project focusing on angels and neons.... than i found these 2 men on youtube and started questioning about switch to oscars and geos... just cant decide now
Loved this episode so much. I’m in the middle. I don’t have room for monster fish but don’t keep nanos. I have pretty big peacocks and haps and some of my mbuna are big. But I do prefer bigger fish and if I had room would definitely keep monster fish!! Great show guys!!
Hear,s a ideal if you want start a tank from scratch .Do like I did when I moved into my new house I bought 5 Buens Aires Tetras at first and 2weeks later I went back to the store and bought 5 more .
i had platies guppies & mollies in a big ole 5ft tank & it just wasn't right 🤣 put some american cichlids in it & moved the others to a smaller tank & now all is good in mityville
Mine is an albino corycat I've had it 6 years I had 6 and she is the only one of them left and I know I'm going to be gutted when she passes away because most of them don't seem to even live that long. Side note I got another 6 corycats so she wasn't alone because I doubt she would have been happy if I had just left her on her own 😊
Question for both of you. For a beginner, shouldn’t they “pay their dues” in learning how to balance the cycle without plant help? Weekly changes. Testing water. Ya know what I mean?
Good question - I think fish keepers can understand the basics while using plants as well. However, a lot of new fish keepers may not want the added perceived hassle at first. Jason
@@joeprovenzano4362 well that explains why you think it's a good idea to learn harder versions of things then move to easier ones, wear your helmets kids 🤣
As always boys absolutely love the podcasts the best idea ever my dream tanks are the ones I have the predator hap tank and the discus tank I must say the discus are a money Pitt to set up and stock those A grade Malasian I was dropping 500 dollars for some of them that's Australian dollars but when you sit back and look at them in my opinion it's all worth it
This goes with any type of tank you got to be careful what you put with what. For instance I thaught about getting another bitcherfish .The lady at Petsmart told me not to 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬
I don't know there just seems to be way too many downsides for keeping monster fish in my opinion.... even just look at the backgrounds of John and Jason I would venture a guess that 9 out of 10 people would absolutely love and want to keep in their house one of those tanks behind Jason.... the idea of just having a glass box with water and sand and nothing else doesn't seem so appealing, at least for me
I’m all about both Africans and community fish, I even have my Oscar in a 125 with 5 blood parrots, and 2 full grown angelfish. They get along great but I never worry about my corydora and goldfish. My weather loaches are giant and my yo-yo loaches are the busiest fish I have ever seen. Their in separate tanks obviously cold water with the cold water fish, the Goldie’s and weather loach together, my Corys are with kribs and mollies, and my yoyo loaches are with my guppies and endless. But still imy African cichlids take 90% of my energy even though I do have to stop and give affection to my Oscar, and angelfish. The fact they all greet the glass and or swim freely is just breathtaking, I could literally go on for days. I definitely got lost in the cichlid hole for a while but coming out of it I’m really loving every single fish in my tanks, axolotl too! Being in a good place with everything running smoothly has been my dream so seeing it now, I’m more than happy. Stay happy and healthy my friends,
@@ProducedbyPDotdo you want some? 😂 Part of the cichlid hole for me was breeding so now I have tons. But I agree with you! They are absolutely the best and most rewarding fish I own. Just can’t help but love my other guys too.

Pea Puffers are awesome!
Idk, I think I'm just a betta person. They absolutely "match" the monster fish feeding experience for me. I love those little monsters!
I have a honey gourami who touches my hands with his feelers every time I clean the tank..he might be small but he has real personality..💜

Best episode by far, alot better to listen and watch when you guys just chat, rather then debate.

Thank you!
Sounds like you’ve never seen a school of Guppies go crazy when fed
A true feeding frenzy

We have a disagreement in the house if our Synodontis was bought in 96 or 97. Regardless.... it's Dopey's tank and all others have just come and gone.

Love the Podcast!!! I have both a Nano (75) Planted Tank and a 135 South American Tank!!
Good info. Thanks!
It's funny you mentioned lots of ember tetras. I bought the whole tank of 85 ember tetras last week at my LFS. It adds up even at $1.50 per fish.
That's awesome!

Dumbledore, Snape and McGonagall for oscars

Been looking forward to this!
I have a Tank full Buens Aires Titras and. They are like pack of happy dogs when I show up to feed them. You don,t need monster fish to be happy.

I would have to go with nano fish because they are all kinds of cute.
the way nano schools feed is dope though cant knock that , feeding big fish sometimes isnt as interesting it actually gets my nerves going @ times
