I went to my local fish shop last year and got 3 Green Lantern platy/swordtails. Omg the amount of breeding these fishes do is insane. I now trade my juveniles lantern to the shop for store credit! Rick is awesome, also I love how much and how fast the channel has grown! ❤
Awesome episode, thanks for joining in Rick Borstein! The joke about livebearers being harmless gave me a good laugh, I tried raising endler fry in a betta tank, they started ganging up and ripping up his tailfin! Definitely not the result I expected, rectified that quickly.
Great Interview! - Rick Borstein is not just a master breeder of cichlids and goodeids/livebearers, but as you can see he's an excellent speaker and very accomplished in quite a number of ways. Great asset to the hobby, thanks Jason for having Rick!
Always had the best results when I bought my fish off the breeder and the quality is a lot better Rick is a very interesting and knowledgeable guy thanks for having him on
Well that was fun ! .... felt like a guest speaker we get at our monthly meetings... if having guest speakers on your galaxy famous pod cast is the new norm that's great ! .... keep up the good work... cheers boys
If you ever need a business professor to guest speak on state of the industry hit me up. I use aquarium industry in my event management and entrepreneurship classes :)
This was a great interview! I'll have to get down to a meeting at the Ft. Myers club at some point. I'm a couple hours away in Tampa and my parents have a place there.
Good speaker BUT two weeks in a row a lot of Latin names that most of us cannot identify. John, can't you edit this to show a photo in the corner so we know what your guest is talking about? Or at the very least show the spelling like a subtitle. Thanks.
Jason, I grew up in Ft. Myers in the 50's-70's. We used to have a great LFS called Bob & Joys Pets. It was near the Edison Mall. I imagine it is long gone by now. Sorry to hear the Fort is lacking in good fish stores now.
There used to be really large actual guppies(five inches or so) in the 80's and 90's. I remember seeing a lot of them, haven't seen any in a very long time. I wonder if what we actually saw were the Goodeid that Rick spoke about.
I wish my platies didn't die months after I get them. I keep the water quality stable for them but after they grow for a time they always start to get the clamped fins and die shortly after
Jason if you go down to see him, both of you should go check out Viktor's "diy public aquarium a fish story" in Naples FL. Totally worth it and Viktor is a fantastic guy! ✌️
Geez just remembering the fish names has to be an accomplishment. So I caught the part that as a group fish are raised and released (endangered fish). I've watched some videos of hobbyist raising endangered fish, do those fish also get released, is that a carrier/hobby. I know some maybe all get sold or given to friends and club members. Dumb question I guess. Watching this and other videos made me wonder if their endangered how are they getting them unless it's a raise - breed and release. Sorry Jason long winded
Great content. Production needs improvement. They need to be split screen to make it feel like a conversation. The switching between the two with the very different camera angles is jarring. Kinda felt like I was literally getting talked down to.
Have to be honest, I was very disappointed in this one. Rick Borstein was a good speaker but the first half hour was devoted to his favorite fish (using all the Latin names only). Minimal anything about the common live bearers which was what I hoped it would be. The things I expect most people wanted to hear (breeding tips, etc) apparently are part of his five or six presentations that he charges to give. Sorry, but I was expecting more, IMO not up to your usual quality.
Rick DOES NOT charge for any of his presentations. Clubs bring him out to speak at no cost to the members. I wanted this to focus mostly on the goodeids.
@TheTankTalkPodcast thanks for the clarification, I stand corrected. But perhaps the title should have been more species-specific, especially when the thumbnail featured a swordtail.
I really didn't enjoy this one as much, i miss john being involved and i feel like maybe this guy was a better teacher than entertainer if that makes sense
Here is the fish room tour referenced in the video: th-cam.com/video/QJ-_0x-4yfE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lrEVogGT1zX4P8jh

Thank you, guys. Dropping knowledge so cool... and needed.
Glad you are here!

Excellent presentation! Now I want to learn more about Goodeids
Such an awesome guest!
Loved this presentation, in depth and content that’s not easily found online!! Love it
This is going to be great.

Yes he is! : -)
I really enjoyed this one! Thanks so much!
Super cool! Thanks 🍻
I love this. jason didn't lie at all lol
This was a fun podcast. I had the re-listen and Google so that I can see what these fish look like. Maybe edit the video to add pictures?
Excellent talk, and no politics! Thanks!
Ya we keep politics out of fish keeping. There’s enough of that elsewhere 😀
Always had the best results when I bought my fish off the breeder and the quality is a lot better Rick is a very interesting and knowledgeable guy thanks for having him on
Appreciate this guest! It would have been super awesome if both Jason and John conversed with Rick. =)
Thanks for the great interview. I've been considering starting another aquarium and will look into livebearers.
Excellent guest speaker. I really appreciated the information. Looking forward to part 2 about cichlids ❤
Thank you!
Perfect timing - I bought four mollies yesterday so this will be great for learning more!
I had seen this guys name so often, i really liked this episode, haven’t seen good information on these goodieds, good job on this one guys

Great guest! I actually have some Allophorous robustus from Rick awesome fish.
I'm also in Cape coral and the first think I checked was the water report - we do use chlorine and not chloramine
John, split screen is the best. Otherwise, this cast is great, as usual.

Very great 👍
Some men seek fame and greatness, other have it thrust upon them.

I agree with this, and for audio listeners maybe try to include a common name the first time a species is introduced.
I just Google as they talk
Is 6:52 am in Philadelphia and see this video and even the am su post to be sleeping 🛌 but can’t wait to see it later😂😂😂😂😂….
Woohoo!
Nice
Are you kidding me?? I was a member of the Chicago live bearer association and I just moved down to FL and joined the fort meyers club!
That’s so cool!
I have no idea what fish he was talking about unless he once in a while mentioned a common name.
Shout outs from ft myers!

Definitely a niche to be filled!

Hi one and all. How deep is reasonable? How deep is too deep?
I can't seem to find a fish club (that's not just an FB group) in Southeast Virginia. Any advice?
Other than a google search I’m not sure?

How can you handle 82 f temperature in your room. I am from Canada. I like my temperature in my house is at 21 to 22c
You get used to it. : -)

I watched the whole show. But way over my skill set.
