  • The idea of traveling to space has fascinated mankind for quite a long time. In an entertaining talk, Dr. Jingnan Guo explains some of the dangers we will be facing when going to space to visit our neighbor planet Mars, and what we can do to minimize them.
Always fascinated by the exploration of Universe, Jingnan Guo started studying astrophysics when she was 17 years old. In 2007 the Marie-Curie Fellowship brought her to Europe to pursue her PhD on “high energy solar physics”. Ever since then she had been living and studying in four different institutes over three different countries across Europe (UK, Italy and Germany). Having worked with different groups and grown through various projects, Guo’s research area ranges from solar dynamics in particular particle acceleration and propagation during solar eruptions to the influence of solar energetic particles as well as galactic cosmic rays on Earth, Mars and the interplanetary space. Her current work is dedicated to better understanding the radiation environment in the interplanetary system and the risk of human exploration to deep space and other planets such as Mars.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Mars and Morocco might "look alike", but I assure you, they are very different. It's like saying two twins are basically the same because they look the same, but one's a sweetheart and the other one would bite your head off, given the opportunity.
People that are working towards a Mars Mission are doing it because they wanna do it. And that's not a bad thing, but I'm more willing to respect an explorer who calls it like it is. These days, people make going to Mars sound like a mission to build a city like New York at the summit of Mount everest. People climb Everest, but no one would build anything atop it. And yet, Everest is a tropical paradise compared to anywhere on Mars. Mars is an unforgiving planet, and it wants to chew you up. Go there if you feel compelled, but don't say it's a move to back up the species. We both know, deep down, that there are probably easier ways to become a solar civilization.
In my *opinion* setting up a colony on the moon makes a lot more sense. We can then use our presence to mine regolith for the raw materials needed to build our first habitat in space. Then we could have a shiny city, floating in the heavens, with spin gravity and such a unique environment that it's people would be able to innovate in remarkable ways unseen on Earth, building amazing tech using all the novel extremes that space has to offer. It's just an opinion, but I really think that makes a whole lot more sense than mounting a 3 year mission to Mars and back.
Again, if you wanna go to Mars, it's your life, not mine. I genuinely wish you the best, and I hope that you conclude that your effort was worth it. But let's not pretend that Mars is the optimal way to back up our Earthling life. We'd be doing it because exploration is a deep part of the human psyche. And I understand and respect that.
    What do you think?

I found your delivery very compelling. I would suggest mining lead on the moon and forming it into shielding to protect the astronauts while traveling to Mars and to cover any installations on Mars for cosmic ray and other radiation protection. This thesis assumes that there exists sufficient quantities of this element on the moon. The lead could be sputtered onto the surface of the passenger compartment of the ship.

The first Mars colonists will die..probably within 2 years. There is no way to provide a viable living space on that planet-anybody feel like living in a sardine can? People who live on Antarctica have comfortable dwellings-and they can go outside (if not too cold). Really, all these discussions of Mars Colonies makes no sense.

She did a great job. It was difficult at times to understand but she was funny sometimes too. Elon Musk is already planning to have his Boring Company up there to build deep tunnels. We will need them to shield the pioneers. I am sure now that Mr. Musk will get us there in my lifetime. I never thought that that would happen.

Water makes a good shield. As you head to mars and drink your water shielding away you replace it with your waste. Then that becomes fertilizer for your farm. Of course, this is all _after_ we wipe out the natives with guns and germs. Manifest Destiny!

The gist of the radiation matter is that the oh, so optimistic outlook of Elon Musk about taking us to Mars is a slick talking sales pitch. We are nowhere near having figured out how to survive anticipated radiation, and Musk and his backers are irresponsible for failing to communicate this to us. A portable magnetic field in Mars spacecraft is the only conceivable hope for now and we are just at the start of devising how to do that, if we can.

No...as an old Baby Boomer, I want to live out the few precious years I have left in peace here on Earth...thank you.
Most of my youthful aspirations are fairly long behind me now. If I could wave a magic wand I would have PEACE with my friends, family, and neighbors and on all the Earth without the manipulation of a "One-Size-Fits-All", very over-bloated central government and destitute local governments that try to mimic the repugnant, wealth transferring, narrative of those "Uncle Suga' " governments.

So 90's we had Britch TV channels, and now have access to TV channels from England and the USA, and movies and series are often made in USA, so naturally American English has bigger Impact this days then they were in the 90's, but if you talk to some in their 50's or 60's they will talk British English.
