Guys whats the difference between " adjusting gain before the signal hits the mixer VS after it hits the mixer" ? Great video btw!

    • @joerchf
      @joerchf 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Before it hits the mixer means before the inserts. If for vocals you want to get rid of volume peaks so that a compressor doesn't have to do too much work it must be before the mixer. With the volume fader (and therefore with volume autmation) it's after the inserts of the mixer. Adjusting the volume after the mixer doesn't help the compressor to deal with huge volume peaks.

One thing I was struggling with was not really knowing where you are DB wise in the automation lane for volume. I wanted to write volume automation with the line tool, but I didn't know where the volume db corresponded to the line I was drawing or seeing. Does that make sense? Seeing the wave in the automation lane is helpful, but still kind of drawing values blindly. I could use the fader and put it at a starting value, but I still am not sure exactly where -2db down from the existing value line is. is there a way to display the db in automation lane? Hope that makes sense

Have a doubt, the fader is post or pre insert/channel processing? I mean, if I put a comoressor on channel/inserts and then automate fader for some reason...will I be moving the compressed signal level? Or the movement will go into the compressor and disturb the audio? I have this confusion in mind

It seems though like the only way to adjust pre mixer volume for all different
kind of tracks especially when programming ( instrument / audio etc ) is the pre gain feature.
Is there any way so that we can do it literally with one move ?
I've tried to assign it to a quick knob ( so that i could do it with an external controller )
but even if you have to save a preset it's faster to first open the channel editor then
    adjust accordingly.
I'm searching for a way where it would be done like in a physical mixer "workflow".
You open an instrument grab the knob and turn down pre-gain at once ( since all instruments are too hot from scratch )
in the same way you can do it after the mixer with the "post" volume fader .
I did try to save a preset where by default all channels open at -15 pre-gain but that causes the opposite problem
when recording ( where the external hardware chain has been already set up correctly and you need minor adjustments there depending on the artist - musician ) and of course all the fx - group tracks etc. In that case one move would bring pre-gain up to the "correct' value.
To summarize is there a way to adjust pre-gain ( with an external controller or even with the mouse ) without opening first the channel editor or the
    mixer window ... ?
    Thanks !
PS : I guess i'm searching for something like a "pad switch" ?

Thank you, this was very helpful. I ran into an issue, I'm sure is addressed. I accidentally found that in a late night tweak of a few tracks, the automation WRITE was on. I didn't note which tracks I played with, so I abandoned and reloaded the track forfeiting my work, rather than destroying my original mix. Is there a way to turn toggle write on and off for all tracks? I only used automation on a few tracks and only would turn write on as needed. Thanks.

Greg how do you lower the overall volumes in automation. I tried using the trim function like i read in the forums by selecting trim start stop and write automation. Lowered the volume and deselecrted write but it goes back to the recorded automation.

If there are multiple lanes with events on a track, the waveform in the automation lane becomes a visual mess because every event gets displayed in layers. Is there a way to view only the active front most event of a track in the automation lane?

Why is that when you adjust the pre gain and have the metering set up to input, the individual channels still display the same levels. I understand the faders won’t affect on this setting but the pre gain should. Still, it reduces the volume and you get the respective visual feedback in the master, but not in the channels. How can you fix this and get pre gain feedback on input metering on every channel?

Thank you Greg for all the knowledge you share about the cubase program.
It’s invaluable and helps us all save so much time.
Question, is there a list of what types of hardware the built in cubase plugins are emulating..
For instance, is the classic compressor based on a LA2A? Even more so what type of console/ channel strip is the cubase based on?
    Thanks for your time.

    • @gregondo376

I have never asked if they were modeled on any particular gear or if it was an almagam of processors. I think the intention is to provide great sounding tools for the plug-ins and channel strip that work for a broad variety of uses rather than model a specific box . I will see if I can find out when I am in Germany next

Hi. Just a quick question. Does the change of clip volume affect how much signal goes into plugins (ie compressor)? Is this change similar to pre-fader gain control like in Pro Tools? I am asking about this, because I'm considering buying Cubase and right now I am in the process of learning what it can do and how it works :)

Greg, another thing (if I can explain it well enuf) regarding when I zoom into a track to see where I want to split a track. As I play the track, the area of the track i'm trying to view keeps advancing into area's of the track further down the line that is past the one area i'm trying to look at. (as the default setting follows the vertical bar that marks a point of a track) How do I freeze the small, zoomed in area of a track on my monitor, while the track is playing, so to inhibit the position of the vertical bar from advancing to the next sections of a track? thanks.

I miss a simple relative volume automation in Cubase Elements. A simple checkbox "Relative automation" would work fine.
A typical example asked about many times in many forums. You create some nice and complex volume automation curve on a track to create nice fade-ins and outs and whatnot (no matter, audio or synth instrument track). And then at the end you open the mixer and want to adjust levels of all the tracks to create balanced sound... but the volume of the automated track obeys the automation curves and you cannot adjust it.
I guess, I'll have to use the Input Filter -> Pregain or the track fader automation instead of volume, so I still can adjust the volume in the mixer.

Have you tried to just manually monitor on the tracks themselves? the tape machine style monitoring is ideally suited for punch recording scenarios. I would place all of the drum tracks in a folder and monitor all of the tracks from the folder when the drummer wants to hear themselves.
