As a nanny, I used to walk my child in his buggy to a place every day. On the way as we reached the top of the hill, I would point out certain things as we passed them and make the appropriate noises where needed. One day I just forgot this, and the little boy turned around at looked at me as if prompting me. It made me realise that he was listening to me all this time, and I wasn't just talking into thin air.

12 years without a drink, and 22 months clean from opioid abuse after a tough surgery. I ran for so long from my childhood trauma and simultaneously lived inside of it. After being misdiagnosed bipolar, I am off all psychiatric medication. This isn’t a path for everyone and I’m grateful for the medication, it helped me when I needed it most. I worked closely with my therapist and my psychiatrist to wean off. It’s opened space for me to process the trauma from my past. I’m learning my why and I couldn’t have understood that without listening to Gabor Mate’s talks.

I'm starting to rediscover connection with my fellow humans and my higher power through AA. 7 days sober. I've been watching a lot off this man's speeches and it helps me understand how I became so broken. I'm working to change my ways so that I can have more meaningful and lasting connections. My mind and body are not used to this so I see it as stressful. I never want to drink again. One day at a time.
Edit: Now 10 months sober. Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Isn’t it just mind blowing how little information we’re exposed to, even those of us who have graduated with a bachelors or masters or even a PhD
I have two masters & I had to seek out for myself the information that interested me (connected to a topic I was studying) bc for as “liberal” as universities are, there is most certainly a “knowledge filter” that exists & far too few professors who are willing to share it with their students

There ARE reasons for that. . And there ARE solutions. Thank you for being with us, Dr. Gabor Mate. Wow Dr. Maté! This is eye opening and explains why 30 years of suppressing my emotions and desperately seeking connection with my ex-husband while keeping it secret resulted in my breast cancer diagnosis (with no family history). It also explains that the stress I endured during my pregnancy from my husband coming home and telling me “he wasn’t happy” while I was pregnant resulted 3 miscarriages and in my son’s asthma (no family history) diagnosis. But there is no one to blame he (ex-husband) was a victim punished as a child for expressing his emotions by his parents. This is the generational curse spoken about in the Bible but this cycle stops with me.

What I really focus on is the value of the content and what I’m truly passionate about while helping others! I'm glad that I'm foolish enough to believe that I can actually start making money through my passions. I've never thought that I'd be able to gain 1K subs faster. I can't imagine how many opportunities could have been wasted if I didn't have courage to go after them. That includes having this channel, being in a management role, having the people who actually care about me for who I am, freelance gigs, being an ambassador in a creative community and now I'm also planning on honing my public speaking skills through joining a toastmaster club and these all happened in 2023. It started with writing them all down on a piece of paper. A paper that serves as a reminder for me to go after what I want even through hard times. I'm not bragging about my accomplishments but simply hoping that this message can also inspire others to believe in themselves.

During that time I was getting triggered as well and seeing myself regress into a child when the events in my life was occurring. My biggest takeaway is that the physical and mental self are inseparable and that's why stress leads to sickness. Especially unresolved childhood trauma, which leads to health problems in adulthood. #wholehearted so glad I discovered this Dr🤗 at a time where I'm experiencing many issues with my health.

    • @tmking7483
      @tmking7483 ปีที่แล้ว

I never get sick and was abused as a kid. So I think there is another angle , in addition to the one presented here where childhood trauma causes physical sickness when older _ it does but not for everybody. ( I think it does when your more nuerotypical and had some good enough parenting,) I had psychopaths for parents. What I figure is that I ran out of cortisol because my mast cells (20000 cells above normal when stressed) mopped up the excess cortisol because it was killing my prefrontal cortex when I was an abandoned baby _ mom went crazy from giving birth and abusive family and abusive neighbours. ( Rosemary baby situation,). When I'm stressed I break out in a rash and I need cortisol cream cause I'm all out of cortisol. The baby abuse shut down my cortisol so my brain wouldnt die - my brain knew it needed to stay alive for me to survive.Everybodies body is different when it comes to stress_ our healings from childhood woundings is a individual journey.

I'm following a spiritual journey and no longer a human construct. But, that only could happen because I withdrew from the human construct early as I saw death coming. We make connections with all members of the life community on this planet. When you find your connection to Earth and the Earth community, it is easier to take the ups and downs of human connections. Also, read lots of books about varied people and their experiences. This helps. Again, bless you. You are not alone.

I then wanted to comment and say thank you for your work Dr. Mate but after hearing your talk I want to say thank you for taking the time to be with the why and create dialogue around human nature. This constant action to do instead of be with has driven us away from our needs and ultimately our nature. My takeaway #wholehearted : As a hopeful mum-to-be, I was drawn to Dr. Maté's simple explanation of attachment and his message about the importance of early intervention and action. It was put frankly that our indigenous knowledge and the knowledge of our ancestors is paramount to our own healing and wellbeing. We should take heed of our current insular world and the role technology is playing in disrupting an age-old experience of childhood and development. His use of common every-day examples, i.e. a parent pushing a child in a buggy while using his phone contrasted to the mum carrying her baby providing very different experiences for the child, were impactful and relatable. This talk and its many other takeaways have left plenty of food for thought.

Wow! Very informative. This made my day and happy to discover Dr. Gabor Maté. Thank you very much.
I have been going through a hellish life for the last 16 years of my life as I am getting targeted persistently 24x7 in an unprecedented way by the highly corrupt people, as I am speaking the truth and criticizing their tons of unstoppable advanced criminal acts all these years.

This man is so wise. I’m 30 and have lived with multiple sclerosis since I was 13, after an extremely abusive, neglectful and stressful childhood left me devoid of any love, connection and authenticity. When I was in the hospital bed at that young age of 13, I sensed something was very wrong, but I didn’t have the words to describe what it was I felt. No one could tell me why it had happened, and I was of course told there was no cure and I was doomed for a life of paralysis, but I never gave up on myself. It’s been a rough 17 years, but I can thankfully say I am still fully able bodied, with a sharp mind to boot. Gabor nailed it when he said we are bio, psycho, social and spiritual beings, and all four of those areas need to be met in order to cultivate health. He has put words to what I intuited, and has led me to a life no one ever thought possible. I am so grateful for this all he has done and continues to do.

Thank you. Producing and crafting this talk was a significant undertaking. We believe this is the best overview of Gabor's work, and we're honored to have created it. His work deserves the time and effort involved in producing this. Wholehearted absorbed the cost so that we can distribute it freely. This is our contribution to sharing Gabor's work with the world. I think that perspective might be missing the larger point; at least according to Gabor. His point is that too many people are being diagnosed with conditions in order for us to have a functioning society. These conditions are a result of a society that does not meet many people's basic needs, all while society still produces incredible benefits. There are many conflicting qualities within ourselves and society. He starts out the special explaining how he has internal contradictions within himself, and that those dynamics exist in relationships, families, communities, and society as a whole. We use the term Wholehearted, as shorthand for integration or coming together of those conflicting parts. :)

Dr. Mate, I have heard your story about your wife not picking you up at the airport and it hurts every time, I can feel your pain, to the point that I cannot agree with you and what you say about this. I wonder if your wife has said, "I am so sorry, time flew and I didn't realize, I'm late do you still want me to come and pick you up? I can leave right now!" Because to me it makes a huge difference, and I don't think it's ok to just handle it in such a nonchalant way. It just doesn't feel good, is perhaps the culture we have become. What do you say? I experience the same thing over and over as you may have imagined. Just that for instance, my husband back then when something like that happened, wouldn't care and will go without talking to me for even years... same with other members of my family. So to me is totally a case of adding insult to injury.

You're welcome. You can see more of Rae's art at her website www.raemate.com. When we designed the set, we really wanted art in the background. Rae was gracious enough to let us use one of her pieces. She painted these decades ago. Rae sent us digital versions, and we enlarged and enhanced the images and printed them for the production. I (AJ), built the frames and my best friend and I stretched and stapled the canvas to them. A worthwhile effort to provide a beautiful background to Gabor's powerful message.

Both my parents lived through German occupation, both lost one parent early, and both had severe emotional disorders. They should never have children, in my view.
I'm sure they loved me, but not enough, and only recently, thanks to Dr Maté's teaching, I started to understand why.
But I lost my life as surely as if I was never born. I I am loved and needed as mother and grandmother, but I don't it. The pain of this lack of feeling is unbearable most of the time, and if I allow myself to think about it, I fear for my life. I do love my family too much to do anything rash. But the unhappiness kills me slowly and I'm losing the will to stay healthy.
At least Dr Mate made me understand why I am this way, and at least I don't blame or judge myself.

Very wise and helpful words from Dr Mate: Rather than looking at diagnosing disease, conditions or behaviours [only], "Why don't we look at the nature of human beings? What conditions are needed for the healthy development of human beings?"
This is similar to educator Maria Montessori's philosophy, materials and methods related to children's learning -- create the right environment for children to learn and they will learn and grow in healthy ways that are unique to their personalities, needs, etc. The teacher then becomes more of a guide and a facilitator, rather than someone who is depended on and who supposedly knows all the answers.

So, like he said, 70+ years later, and he still has that problem of feeling like the abandoned infant which leads to fights in the marriage. So my question is: once we've identified the root of that behavior or coping mechanism, then how do we FIX it, how do we RESOLVE it? I don't want to be 70 years old and still acting out these same unconscious detrimental patterns...
