I understand that you maybe forgot but Freddy’s whole purpose was to kill the kids of the elm street parents who killed him. They had been teenagers by time freddy was able to get his revenge. It was an obvious work around to not kill kids but it was explained. After he killed the last of them in 4, he used the remaining teenagers to use his name to spread fear so he could get stronger. It all made sense with how they explained it.
Jason series is super interesting, he goes from being a regular guy to being a supernatural being who can regenerate. Really Jason just wants kids to get off his lawn.
Jason's portrayal in this is a whole thing. They actually fired Kane Hodder who played Jason for almost 20 years, because they did think he was big enough physically to be Jason in this movie. Kane Hodder wasn't happy and there are still fans who are pissed about it. That aside, Ken Kirzinger did a fantastic job as Jason in this movie, funnily enough he's a stuntman and did a good percent of the stunts, but the studio DID NOT want him to do any stunts. He called being treated like an actor weird, he really wanted to the Jason on fire in the cornfield scene, but the studio wouldn't let him. He's not a stranger to the Friday the 13th franchise as he appeared in, "Jason Takes Manhattan" and even ironically fought Kane Hodder's Jason.
Kane hodder didn't play Jason for 20 years 😂 he only played Jason in the last 4 films right before Freddy vs Jason Jason was played by different ppl in the early ones
@@jtrillguzman9641Between his first and last film, Hodder played the role for 13 years, 1988 to 2001. It's not 20, no, but it is three separate decades.
@@A1NYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot They wanted Jason to really tower over Freddy. Kane Hodder is 6'2 while Ken Kirzinger id 6'5 compared to Robert Englund who's 5'10. It still makes no sense, but that was the reason given to Kane Hodder when they fired him.
As a big Jason fan he is not evil like Michael Myers or Freddy he is misunderstood. Talking more about the original Friday the 13th films he was bullied to death and guarded his territory. Jason is much easier to sympathize with than any other horror villain
@@wolfpredator1000 Not really, Freddy for example was a monster his whole life, when looking at villains in general Sauron, Sidious, and other notable villains were always villains with no real backstory that made them evil to begin with since they always were. The complex villains like Vader or Scar from the lion king were made into villains due to others.
The backstory of this movie is super interesting, if only to learn all the different types of insanely wacky scripts that were submitted before it was pulled from development hell.
I saw this at a special screening event with friends they had scream contests buttons shirts the whole deal lots of fun, and yes, this movie grows on you the more you watch it 😂. Awesome show there, S.Pale. Keep up the terrific work 👌 👏 👍 😀
I personally enjoyed this movie. it's supper hard to put two monsters in a movie, and I though they did a solid job as far as combining the lore and logic.
This movie came out at the perfect time for me. I had watched all the movies and was a big fan of both characters. I was obsessed with concepts of distinct opposing forces meeting, like in old Godzilla vs. movies so this was pretty much a dream come true. Then when I saw it, it delivered so heavily on the Versus part of the movie that I instantly fell in love with it, despite knowing it had many flaws. Freddy and Jason tear each other to pieces for the entire third acts with literal gallons of blood and it is glorious. I think of it as a final sendoff to the slasher genre. The end of an era. A wave and a final wink goodbye. It had become outdated by then, and the Scream series had already been deconstructing it. So what better way to go out with a bang than have the two biggest icons finally face off with all the fixings and loving tributes from movies past. You get a little dodgy CGI but mostly its still good old fashioned practical blood and guts and the movie still keeps that classic fun tone where it's not taking itself too seriously. Not a bad swan song for the original continuity of both characters and a worthy final appearance by Robert Englund as Freddy.
What's kinda cool but funny is that they're trying to bring the Slasher genre back to life with Winnie The Pooh: Blood & Honey, and Mickey's Mouse Trap
This is self-aware schlock when executed well. It knew exactly what it was, and it “winked” at the audience (at the end, literally 😉). 😂 A big difference between Jason and Freddy is that Jason kills *clinically*. He’s doing what he believes his Mother is telling him and killing is just “a job”. He’ll lop your head off, and move on. On the other hand, Freddy revels in being unnecessarily cruel, he enjoys his “job”. Like in the other movie where he was enjoying himself behind the deaf kid’s back, mocking him without anyone else aware of his antics but himself. Which is hilarious.
There have been occasions where Jason made his "job" personal. Before he became a zombie when he attacked that girl in part 3 during her backstory, according to the what I've heard he didn't attack her to murder but to "assault". The other time was when Tommy brought him back, he really really wanted to kill him more than any of the other victims he had available. A whole cabin of little kids and he chooses to go after Tommy first.
Honestly, New Nightmare is my favorite and when you were critical at first, I was hesitant to keep watching your channel. But you paid attention and, while still holding a critical eye, were able to get the idea and understand it better, as you explained. I think you were very fair, and it must be hard to try to comment on something while actively watching it, I really can’t imagine. Haven’t watched this video yet, but I’m excited to, and to check out more from you!
Wow I really appreciate it your thoughtful understanding! And I will say, I’ve absorbed New Nightmare differently as time has passed. Because you’re 100% right, it is hard to fully grasp the film and how I feel about it while I’m completely in the moment. I personally need to let it marinate for a bit. So my feelings on it have changed, for the more positive, over time. I’m going to be doing a full ranking of each film after I watch the remake too where I’ll talk about this. Not to say I’ll always share the same opinion as everyone else when I watch movies but my opinions do change :)
Freddy vs Jason vs Ash was going to be developed after this movie, but sadly it was cancelled due to creative differences between the studio and Bruce Campbell. Would be a huge treat if we get to see a horror hero fight against the two evil slashers icon. 😔
It was because they were gonna make ash win against Freddy and Jason and felt it wouldn’t be received well from fan bases of Freddy and Jason and just scrapped it, would’ve been awesome to have a sequel
I remember seeing trailers for this when I was a kid, thinking I would check it out when I was old enough... and the movie lives up to the title, they really duke it out in this and it's a real blast to watch
@@ScaredPale a little piece of advice either be as physically durable/physically strong of a fighter/heroine/lover or build yourself up 2 as Superhuman Physique as ya can get either way ya need 2 survive/withstand being Superhumanly Stabbed in the back/chest long enough 2 receive Medical Treatment!
This is the only one I got to see in the theater when i was like 15. Been a fan since I was way too young. It was a little disappointing since I was hearing about a FvJ movie since I was in first grade, and horror changed so much. I wasn't into post Scream horror for a while, and this was a product of its time, but i still loved it and loved that I got to watch on the big screen.
The third act is happening on a construction site because there was originally a whole subplot related to that (Voorhees house being demolished, I think?) and it made the plot a bit more fleshed out and coherent. The runtime would have been around 2 hours. David Goyer was hired before shooting to trim down the script and write new scenes to make the story work anyway. Which explains a bunch of expository dialogs to move from one scene to the next sometimes.
I could watch all the Nightmare and Friday the 13th movies and still have fun with it (the goofy ones included). There's a certain charm to the low quality sequels haha..
The “springfield slasher” nickname actually came from a briefly aired anthology series that Freddy hosted. The first episode was how they came burn him alive after he got off from his trial.
@Scared Pale I think you should watch Jason Goes To Hell - The Final Friday, as it leads into Freddie vs Jason, kind of a pity you didn't watch it first. I know you're not keen on the typical Friday the 13th formula but "Jason Goes To Hell" is very different, to the point where it pi**es off some fans!
Sidney, I highly recommend rewatching the original Friday the 13th (1980). I hadn't seen it in a long time, but a few weeks ago, I decided to give it another try. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. While the entertainment value does rely on the kills, the tension buildup before each one is remarkably well-done. Additionally, the soundtrack is really great. The movie, for me, also evokes a strong 80's nostalgia.
@8:45 Freddy wasn't in the hell in the first Elm movie. He has range to dream stalk if he's in the dream world but in this film Freddy needed to escape hell, which is where Jason comes in.
i enjoyed this movie, solid visual style and the fight was a lot of fun. if memory serves, it set some kind of stunt record for longest fire walk. the guy playing Jason here had cameo'd in Jason Takes Manhattan as a guy who Jason throws through a window. i always assumed calling Freddy a child killer while giving off the vibes you mentioend was intentional...they wanted him to be a full on creep but didn't want to say it out loud
This has a killer soundtrack.i saw it in theaters the first time around and the end credits part was amazing with those tracks they used.when they played kill switch when darkness falls there was some headbanging going on in the theater it was cool.i was one of them.good times.still love this movie never not liked it at any point.this is a really great movie
This movie takes a lot of liberties with the Jason lore, but I'm not sure that's a huge deal, because Jason's own movies often contradict his own lore. And the timeline of the films makes no sense whatsoever. Jason's look is pretty unique in this movie. They purposely made him more like Frankenstein's monster. Much, much taller than he is in the other movies (in order to contrast with Freddy -- the most popular Jason, Kane Hodder, is barely taller than Robert Englund) and moves much more stiffly. I kind of like the ratty hobo look, but the head prosthetic has some super detailed painting that is just washed out to black with the movie's lighting. it's very light gray with a lot of progressively darker veins painted all over it. Looks one color in the movie. The film itself -- it's fun, but not great. There's a great video somewhere on the internet of the girl who plays Laurie at a comic con somewhere, tweaked out of her mind on meth or some other kind of speed. The Friday movies are all about the boobies, except for Part 6. I can't say I mind seeing some boobies from time to time, but it's a big reason why the Friday movies are so trashy. Especially Part 5. Boobies galore in that one. Doesn't make a lot of sense how they're able to drive from Ohio to New Jersey so quickly. Movie magic, I guess.
They said it in the Never Sleep Again documentary, they been trying to make this crossover happen since this the mid 80s. It couldn't happen at the time due to both characters being on different movie studio's (Freddy on New Line and Jason on Paramount). One of them F13 movies ended up flopping in box office (I forgot which one cause I don't watch Jason) and Paramount was done making Friday The 13th movies, until Jason ended up being taking in by New Line. They just weren't allowed to use the "Friday the 13th" title. Since then, they been trying to come up with a good script for years and it was challenging, considering that both characters had different background. Then the director Ronnie Yu (who had just directed Bride Of Chucky) never seen either Freddy or Jason movies but he watched them both and used his creative skills to come up with a decent script. Freddy vs Jason was definitely a needed film for the horror culture. It may not have been scary but it was highly entertaining. Fun Fact: The original ending was going to be setup, to where this giant devil hand comes from out of the ground and pulls both Freddy and Jason to hell. And as they were about to continue to battle there, they both get interrupted by Pinhead from Hellraiser, basically to play the peacekeeper 😂😂. It didn't happen because they didn't have enough money in their budget, to make it happen. Also Pinhead is from another movie studio. Me personally, I'm glad that didn't happen because I felt like it would have been overdoing it a little to add another horror movie killer in the mix. And I wasn't digging the theatrical ending either because they made Jason look like a hero and he had some help, which kinda killed the whole vibe. But it was acceptable, ig lol
Just discovered your channel and enjoying watching all these reactions. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this (or if you know) but in regards to all the "pedo vibes", Freddy Krueger was originally a child rapist as Wes Craven said that was the most evil thing he could think a person would do, but dropped it after a string of reported incidents in the news of that fearing it would be too controversial. I definitely think that Robert Englund chose to keep that unspoken detail in his performance of Freddy.
You're pretty much right about the Friday movies. They're mostly just more of the same though parts 4, 6, and 7 take big steps in Jason's evolution. Jason Goes to Hell is batshit crazy. Jason X is ridiculous but fun, the beginning features David Cronenberg and addresses Jason's fate after the previous films. A Smallville-type series died in development called Crystal Lake Chronicles and would have been a teen horror/drama occasionally featuring Jason. There was always a rumor that there would be 13 movies in the series with the last one being the definitive end. If you count Freddy vs Jason the next movie will be part 13.
No one ever thought Freddy was a pedo until the remake came out. But i can see why people who are just seeing the Nightmare movies now would think he was.
Well kind of. The pedo thing was in the original nightmare 1 script, as was the idea that nancy & her friends all had older siblings that freddy killed before the parents torched him... but they felt that stuff worked better when it was kept as implication, instead of an explicit part of the lore.
@@jaernihiltheus7817 no what happened was at the time there was a lot of allegations of kids being raped by teachers so they decided it would have controversial to do so they dropped it altogether and made Freddy a child murder instead
At its core the movie is retro kitsch. Fun but not particularly filling. That said, i have to say the execution of the fight scenes is excellent. As far as 'vs' films go (alien vs predator, etc) it was a good effort. Great reaction as usual. Have a great weekend!
Thanks! And I have seen all the Alien films and I’ve seen the first two Predator movies and the most recent one “Prey”. BUT I haven’t seen Alien vs. Predator!!!! Maybe I’ll react to that
This was so fun for Friday/Nightmare fan upon release. There was so much build up, they even had a boxer type weigh in promo in Vegas ahead of release. I remember the marketing being insane. Saw it opening weekend, theater was packed with ppl even sneaking in to sit on the stairs. There was cheering, laughing and so much interactivity. When Jason emerged from the water ppl went wild. But then when Freddy winked, his fans lost it. Good time for horror fans
This came on the heels of Jason X (2000), where Jason goes to the future and space. This was basically a back to basics reboot for both characters, with the goofiness of the later Elm St's. The director Ronny Yu had just done Bride of Chucky, which was also very self aware and rebooted Chucky for a new generation... before that he made Hong Kong horror & martial arts movies.... and with this movie he wanted it to basically have a WWE feel.. and I think he pulled it off. I went to see this a few times in the theater, but the first time, opening weekend.. you have NO idea how hyped the crowd was. It was the closest thing to going to Wrestlemania I can think off.. people were stomping, chanting, shouting for their favorite slasher, throwing stuff at the screen.. it was pandemonium. Im sure this bothered some people but the atmosphere in that theater (and im sure many others) was ELECTRIC.. the kind of collective adrenaline that lingers after the movie is over. People had been waiting for this for a long time and it certainly delivered on the title. This movie isn't "art" but in the right context with the right crowd it's a blast. Friday the 13th is worth getting into beyond 2. They get more fun as they go.. sillier.. like Freddy did. If you're gonna see any standalone movie of the series, see PART 6, JASON LIVES... it's the most fun, self aware, and accessible (though you might miss the backstory of the hero Tommy Jarvis if you don't see part 4 and 5).
I do know the name Tommy Jarvis from playing the Friday the 13th games! And I can only imagine how exciting that theatre was! I totally grew up watching Bride of Chucky on VHS. Didn’t realize it was the same director!
@@ScaredPale Yup... The Tommy Jarvis from the game is the same one from Part 6. Same actor too (hes played as a kid by Corey Feldman in part 4). Spoiler alert: Part 6 Jarvis accidentally resurrects Jason.. that's the one where Jason goes full on zombie.
Dan, The great thing with the ANOE and Friday franchises is their in sequence. Outside of a New Nightmare and Jason X this is picked up right after Dream Child and Jason goes to Hell with the outlier showing Freddy's demise in the Final Nightmare. I saw this at Hack n Slash at a festival outside of Austin with Robert and the crew. Then again opening night. You are right about the energy, when Jason knocked the door down and we hear " come to Freddy" the whole theater stood up. Freddy became so powerful in the real world because it wasn't just the Elm street kids afraid but the whole town of Springwood due to Jason's carnage. I don't think Jason showed fear in dream world. It was confusion over his mother. He finally realized he was awoken out of his slumber by Freddy. People thought Jason was afraid of water. That was false in the script. Freddy kills after he exploits your fears. When Freddy said " Lets dig a bit deeper" he saw Jason's dreams. Constant killing machine from vengence from the drowning. He saw a really disturbed individual. When Freddy started to drown Jason it put Jason in a rage and he woke up. These 2 were the Kings of the slasher genre during the peak in the 80's. Both are very unique on the way they kill. Freddy exploits your fears and turtures his victims. Jason is very skilled. Nobody uses weapons like Jason. The hype started after Dream Warriors and Jason Lives. Jason was powered up to the level of Freddy. Both were by far the most popular and powerful. These 2 Titan slashers hit pop culture in a way that really made this the collision of all VS films. Think about today Dan. Freddy would still work today due to dreams. You can't replace Robert so go with a demonic version and Zombie Jason being in a desolite remote area with no cell service. They need to reboot both darker and it ends in a remake of FvJ.
A little advice. You are a reactionary channel to say you won’t watch a certain movie series is a death nail for your channel. Friday the 13th would bring lots of views but you do you😊
I never say never 😊 as I write in the description. After going through 2 whole slasher series I’m ready to take a break on that sub genre and react to some different horror for a while.
Great reaction to this highly enjoyable film!. I've always loved this one. The little nods to previous films, Jason walking through that field on fire is one of my favourite scenes, the fight between the two was really well done too. I know you're not that interested but Friday 13th parts 3 and 4 are well worth a look to give you more about Jason's look, etc. Part six would explain why he's almost unstoppable, part 8 (in New York) is dumb as hell but very entertaining when he finally gets there and part 10 (in space) is one of those wonderfully daft films that you can't help but enjoy!. Maybe not reaction worthy but do give them a watch if/when you have the time. It always intrigues me that Freddy was this child killing, possible pedo and yet he became a mainstream icon, hell, even kids walk around on Halloween dressed as him. Very strange!. Oh yeah, the Nightmare remake is poor and genuinely considered one of the worst remakes, up there with The Wicker Man, so good luck with that one. 😀
Technically, this isn't Robert Englund's last hurrah as Freddy as he put the makeup on one last time in an episode of, "The Goldbergs" a few years ago.
Point to add to this. Robert does yoga so he retails his flexibility to an extent. It’s doing a lot of action stuff is what he really can’t do anymore due to his age. He can do it in his heart and mind, it’s just his body can’t handle it like he used too. So yes, this is technically his last time and he himself has said also, he is fine passing the torch along as he again is too old to play Freddy anymore.
The "Springwood Slasher" nickname came about on Freddy's Nightmares the tv show. It was released between Dream Master and Dream Warrior. This is the first (and only) movie to make it canon.
The “chhh chhh ahh ahh” is Jason saying “hunt hunt, kill kill” i used to watch this movie every day when I was a kid, my sister used to do the whispers to scare me 🤣
This is untrue as it is looped from his mom saying in the first one kill kill mama they took the ki from kill and ma from mama and looped it. Kiki mama
Regarding the "look" of Jason. If you go back to the Friday the 13th game, how there are various versions of Jason from the series of movies. So I won't consider this spoilers to the movies... (I won't spoil any specifics to the movies, just info you would know from the game) Friday 1 was mommy of course. Friday 2-4, he was more a deranged human. You got to see his face once. Although disfigured, he had some hair and such. He went from sack head to the hockey mask eventually. He would get injured and show reaction to it. He could survive some seemingly fatal damage, but nothing was too extreme on that. 4 was subtitled "The Final Chapter" for a reason... at the time. 5 continued things from the previous story. 6-8 Introduced Zombie Jason. Story continues in 6. But now Jason is decomposing, and seemingly invincible. Nothing really seems able to end him. I know many disliked 7, but it's one of my favorites, it also was the first one I watched seriously and all the way through. In 7, Jason had my favorite look, you could see his teeth through his missing cheek, you could see his rib cage. Literally decomposing. 8 kinda kept that look, but the end revelation was the most disappointing thing ever for me. 9 was meant to be the final chapter again. How do we kill Zombie Jason? Well we do some stuff many fans really ended up disliking, and adding new lore that I think went over about the same. He did seem disfigured but maybe not as decomposing like previous movies. The unrated directors cut whatever, had some amazing kills theatrical people didn't get to see. X seemed more like an evolution of 2-4's look. He seemed disfigured, but not really decomposed. His head seemed to have more hair than usual (maybe even Kane Hodder's real hair). He did seem pretty invincible though. Of course, in the movie he eventually becomes Uber Jason, the half man?, half machine, all evil being. Jason in Space. Then you have FvJ. I'd say he looked like an evolution of 2-4's Jason mixed with aspects from 9 and X. He seems invincible but not decomposed, and bigger and bald. Friday Remake (I don't hate this one like some do) he retains again the maybe disfigured, but big and strong guy. I don't think he is invincible in this one, more like 2-4. So I'd say each one he pretty much has his own look, though there might be similarities.
In the original film Tina was talking about her nightmare and said it reminded her of that old jump rope song 1,2 Freddy's coming for you. So the kids of spring wood still remember him.
The Friday the 13th series I love for I guess silly reasons. I like how over the top it is how bad the dialogue and how bad the characters are written. They are written so bad you start cheering for Jason to kill them which for me is part of the fun. Also so much fun 80s cheese
I also don’t get much from the traditional slasher MO. But Friday the 13th part 4 and 6 both have good characters outside of the usual “slasher fodder” that these movies usually have. They also explore more of that “was Jason also a victim in all this?” types of narratives that this movie has touches of. Which is the most interesting element in the series, I think.
27:40 to answer that as best as I can from what I heard Robert wanted to be so involved he did most of his stunts except for the few times he got chucked across anywhere.
What I like most about this movie was the marketing leading up to its release. They had an actual weigh-in in Las Vegas like boxers and ufc fighters do before fighting lol. The video is on TH-cam if ur interested.
One thing about the Nightmare on Elm Street remake that gets criticized very heavily is that the pedo vibes are very much front and center, but like you mentioned in this video, that's always been an aspect of Freddy
A new upload from you marks a good score of any day! I was super hyped for this movie when it came out. Can't say I was too pleased :) I expected something insanely grandiose. But it's fun watch regardless, even if only for a single time :)
I get the no interest in Friday the 13th as a series but I would suggest checking out some random ones yourself. Part 4 and 6 are both really fun movies
I want to say that I just found your channel. I'm already a fan. You are very authentic and I'm glad you watched the films before diving into FvJ. Sorry about the novel I wrote. In the 80's, Freddy and Jason was by far the the 2 most popular and powerful during the slasher peak. After Dream Warriors and Jason Lives the hype for a crossover was huge. Jason was powered up to the level of Freddy and the debate was on. What most don't know is that Micheal wasn't big in the 80's. He was dormant for 7 years and was considered a weaker version of Jason. Many were upset when they tried to have Micheal copy the Friday formula when he was prior to both. So Halloween films bombed till Jaime came back to the franchise. Halloween was great for being it's own thing. My point is Freddy and Jason was a perfect match of opposites. I was a huge ANOES fan and my brother loved Friday 13th. FvJ was popcorn fun and incredible that it happened. The hype was insane. It was odd to discuss a fight between two evil supernatural slashers. These 2 were so popular in pop culture it became a thing. The pacing was fantastic. Freddy became so powerful in FvJ because it wasn't just Elm street kids afraid but the whole town of Springwood. They need to reboot both Freddy and Jason and go dark. Both still work today. Jason in a remote area with no cell service and Freddy in your dreams. Make Freddy more demonic. You can't replace Robert. They could still do Zombie Jason and do 3-4 films that leads to a remake of FvJ.
Looking forward to the remake 😂 Yeah, good luck with that! Oof. I get what you mean about the Friday the 13th series with it being surface level but I think there’s a couple of films in there worth seeing, particularly Part IV. I like Jason X a lot too. Aside from that, with SAW X coming out soon, I think the SAW series would be a good one for your channel next building up to it? You might have already seen them but I’d be down for a series rewatch even if you have.
I can understand why you might stay away from doing the Friday the 13th series. But you might want to give Part 6 a watch. It brings in a lot of Gothic Horror vibes to this basic slasher series. Also Kevin Williamson has said in interviews that Friday part 6 was a big inspiration for his Scream script.
The pedo vibes are definitely intentional. Originally, Freddy Kruger was explicitly a pedo, but in the 1980s there was a big scandal around a preschool supposedly having systematic pedoness with its charges, so the script was changed so that it became subtext. Much, much later it came out that the scandal was a combination of kids lying (and being encouraged to lie via institutional bias) and parent hysteria. Regardless, the pedo vibe is there and continues through most of the movies. While the Nightmare series might not be overly sexual in so far as straight up skin, there is a definite underlying creepy sexual nature in the way Freddy interacts with his victims. One thing I always found interesting about this film is just how incredibly frustrated Freddy gets at Jason being a killstealer and being unable to directly harm the guy. One of the main reasons Freddy in life went after little kids was because they were easy to overpower and hunt. Freddy doesn't want a challenge; he wants to be in control and able to play with his prey. Thus why when people fight back, he gets increasingly annoyed and angry. So part of the explanation why Freddy mostly goes after teenagers now is because he CAN just as easily. In dreams, teens are no more able to fight back than his original elementary school aged victims were and teenagers have a lot more problems and hangups and interests that he can use to torment them before going into the final kill. Teens are an aged wine to the little kids' fermenting grape juice. There's a bit of a difference in the way that Freddy and Jason go about their kills. Freddy is sadistic and enjoys the hunt and terrorizing his victims just as much (if not moreso) than the final kill. Jason, while very brutal, doesn't derive much -- if any -- enjoyment out of his work. It's just a thing he has to do, so he's much more straight forward and blunt and only really engages in stalking to get a bead on his target. Once he moves, he kills in the most efficient way he has available. I don't think the Nightmare remake is quite as bad as its reputation suggests, though. It has some neat expansion on the lore (with the microsleep episodes providing some really cool visuals) and, had they kept Freddy's attitude and motivation through the entire movie, would be a different take on the character. But that's a discussion for when you see it. :)
I saw the original ANOE(84) on opening night and the Final chapter the same year. You are dead on with both. Freddy uses your fears and tortures his victims. Jason is so skilled with weapons and being a hunter with his kills. If needed he will go through a wall regardless of how many if he wants you. The hype and talk of this battle started after Dream Warriors and Jason Lives. It seemed like a pipe dream till Jason goes to Hell. We saw how powerful Freddy can become if it's not just Elm street kids afraid. In FvJ, Jason's rampage put the whole town of Springwood in fear. After Jason Lives we know Jason was powered up to the level of Freddy so this became a fun debate. Both hit pop culture which is rare. They were by far the 2 most popular and powerful during the peak of the slasher genre. I explained to some that Micheal wasn't an Icon near the level of these 2. His original film was iconic like "The Shining" but he was dormant for 7 years in the 80's. When he did return he was considered a far weaker version of Jason. I loved Halloween but the films bombed when they started to copy the Friday formula. The og Friday was meant to be a Halloween ripoff but the roles took a dramatic turn due Jason's iconic fans. I loved the Elm street films but enjoyed Friday for what they were. Popcorn fun. My brother preferred Friday. That was common. Freddy did well with casual horror fans but Jason's cult following was huge to the genre. This has to be the best Vs. film ever created.
Supposedly this isn't the ending we should have gotten. Originally they wanted Pinhead to come stop them from fighting and ask them what the problem was, then taking them back to Hell I think. but the production company couldn't get the rights to the character.
This movie is so fun that I let the flaws slide, like you said the odd off acting weirdly fits the early 2000s scary movie/idle hands vibe. Not the og actor for Jason's mom, when they asked her actress she turned it down for being too small of a part. I'm glad they brought back Hypnocil, its such an interesting element only 2 of all the movies tackled. The more Friday the 13th films you see the easier FVJ is to appreciate, and Jason looks the closest to his appearance in Jason X here with the jacket+gloves. In Nightmare 1 the mom emphasizes on the "filthy" when she calls Freddy a filthy child murderer, kinda confirming or at least heavily supporting the pedo theory not to mention the remake embracing it.
There are people who don't believe what Freddy's about? In the Englund's movies, it's never said out loud, but it's not really hidden. In the remake there are no subtleties to what Freddy's about, made it difficult to root for him. Even Wes Craven didn't like that move.
The reason why no one rooted for the Freddy in the remake is because the character and actor did a crap job. And the reason why Wes Craven hated it is because the actors gave crap performances, the characters were far from developed to the point where they all merged as one. The remake is utterly atrocious at best.
for jason's case, if some quick therapy was applied, saying like his mother would've wanted him to have a happy life, a better life, then ask if he finds his life being a killer makes him happy. Does anyone think he might listen to that?
Love the commentary! ❤. My parents let me watch Nightmare on elm Street because it didn't have nudity. I couldn't watch the Jason movies. Halloween movies were too boring for me. I think that's why I became a Freddy fan and still am to this day.
I legitimately enjoy this movie - no "so bad it's good" weaseling from me, this is a good movie! A great modern version of what Universal used to call "monster rally" films, like FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN or ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. (GODZILLA VS. KING KONG and the recent GODZILLA VS. KONG remake also rate highly.) This movie knows exactly what it's about and mostly delivers. As you mentioned the makeup and effects are a lot truer to the Freddy concept, nowhere near the rubbery look of NEW NIGHTMARE. The director, Ronny Yu, also did the amazing (yes! amazing!) BRIDE OF CHUCKY 5 years before this. If you're looking for a new franchise to check out and you haven't seen it already, I highly, HIGHLY recommend the CHILD'S PLAY/CHUCKY series of movies and TV. It's kind of a minor miracle - same actor playing the villain, same writer/director involved with the whole series on some level, and the series veers from straight horror, to parody, back to horror, without ignoring or retconning any of it. I believe Robert Englund did one more appearance as Freddy Krueger after this - a guest shot on a 2018 episode of 1980s-set sitcom THE GOLDBERGS. He has said repeatedly that he is officially retired from the role, for health reasons. I can only imagine how grueling it would be for a 76-year-old to sit through hours of makeup and then have to run around and kill people on camera. The remake, I don't know...I didn't HATE it, but it left almost no impression on me and I've never felt the urge to revisit it, despite being a huge fan of the franchise, so, take from that what you will. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, always love your reactions.
I like that you think that the filmmakers like either of these series. Director Rommy Yu infamously is not a fan or either franchise, he actually he's never seen a Freddy or Jason aside from his own. I get why choosing someone impartial might feel like a good move, but at least choose someone who knows who Freddy and Jason are otherwise we end up with stuff like Jason being scared of water. Jason basically lives in water in his own movies, he's definitely not scared of it. Those scenes still rub a lot of fans the wrong way.
he didn’t write the script. it was two american men who were fans of both franchises. they intentionally added the water thing so freddy would be able to use something against him in the dream world.
I was 13 when this movie came out, i liked it a lot, seeing it again many years later the perception has changed a little but it remains a good movie. I can't wait to see the next video.
Id say in this movie, Jason's look is most similar to Friday the 13th 6 Jason Lives. Thats also a movie where he comes out of the grave in the beginning. So it's got a similar dirty vibe to him and rotting flesh.
I’m sure someone else has probably recommended it, but I just wanted to make sure that someone has suggested that you watch “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon”. I think it’s the best of the self-aware horror movies, and Robert Englund is in it, too.
The comics called Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash are sequels to this movie and Jason kills Lori and Will and Lori says she actually felt sorry for Jason and what he went through both as a kid and against Freddy but she lost all sympathy for him cause he just doesn't stop killing. Freddy once again uses Jason to get the Necronomicon to gain unrivaled power in both the dream realm and the real world. Freddy uses his new power to take over the world and allowed Jason to lead his deadite army in a new and improved body but eventually Jason turns on Freddy.
@A1lNYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot I figured it wasn't but I think it's the only thing we see that continues their story beside a deleted scene of Will turning onto freddy and killing Lori at the end.
The part about Jason being afraid of water makes no sense in this because here's an example. In Friday the 13th part 6 there is a scene in the movie we're Tommy Jarvis is in a boat trying to get Jason to go after him and Jason had no problem going after Tommy going in and underneath the water / lake Also when it comes Jason's mom. Originally the plan was to have Betsy Palmer the same actress that played Mrs. Voorhees in the first Friday the 13th to reprise the role. She ended up turning it down after reading the script and also the money they offered her was not alot. Compared to the amount they originally offered her.
@@ScaredPale The movie didn't really explain the water thing all that well. It's not that he's afraid of water, he's afraid of drowning. Like his original death. During the F13 movies, he's been in the lake plenty of times with no trouble but the times where he has zero control, he panics.
@@Seelebobwhat you mean the movie didn’t explain it there’s literally a scene in this movie where we see Jason as a kid get thrown in the water and we see him drowning struggling 18:38 there’s also some explaining throughout this specific scene
For some reason this comment was deleted, but i highly recommend watching FREDDY vs JASON vs ASH comic film 2020 dubbed by Steven Grisez. It's a sequel that was originally intended for freddy vs jason that never took off, and was made into a comic instead.
Ngl i enjoyed this one and feel like it's actually better than the later crap freddy films lol. I love that you caught the PJ Soles baseball cap cause i saw somewhere that was the reference. I feel like the plot in this like the town freddy cover up, bringing back hypnocil, nancy's house, all the references and call backs to the original film, and freddy being brought out of the dream for the final battle, all make this a better version of the Final Nightmare as a final Freddy film, while still being campy and silly and upbeat. I only wish there could have been some link to Nancy just to really circle it all back but im always going to be partial to nancy bc imo she's the best final girl and perfect foil/protagonist against Freddy which is something that was lacking for me in later films as they became very very Freddy-centric to where youre just rooting for his cool kills.
Last year, I watched Friday Part I to X, skipping the remake. I just watched the 1st Nightmare last night and I've decided to finally finish the franchise in succession, and I can finish on Freddy vs Jason this year. I watched Halloween the year before last, but Friday is still my favourite of the Big 3. Friday Part II is an absolute perfect Camp Slasher 😚👌 I love Part 6 so much too! But I'm shocked that you wouldn't want the same Lore experience of Voorhees. Jason takes Manhattan, is a wicked flick, but only after like an entire hour lol. Seriously disturbing finale 😂 If you're not tackling Friday next, what were you thinking of covering next? Any franchises?
@@ScaredPale One offs, eh? Then may I recommend 1981's Just Before Dawn? Exceptional Wilderness Slasher, with one of the most memorable Final Girl archs ever in film. Highly underrated and mostly forgotten, but so solid in its execution! As a male viewer, I'd be very interested to know your Female perspective on it. Connie, imo, is one of the single greatest Final Girls of all time! And nobody ever mentions her! You ever screen Susperia? The 1st time I did, for no reason I can describe, I just had to go back and watch the 1st 10 minutes again. Æsthetic Masterpiece! 😚👌 How are you with Final Destination? They're working on a new one ya know. And how about the 1st 6 Leprechaun flicks? Just a few ignorant suggestions, not really knowing what you've personally screened. I really loved the 2022 Hellraiser! When Pinhead was like "You have chosen the Lament Configuration", I fkn cried!🤘😭 No other film made me cry last year. I have to go back and watch like Shawshank or something, to jerk a few man tears 😭😂
I'm new to your channel but... you look just like Kate Winslet and it's crazy. I'm sure you get that a lot. Anyways, I love this movie. Came out when I was 12 and it got me into the series lol.
This movie was the only one where Jason afraid of water, this movie did not follow the Jason story from the Friday the 13th , movies, he was never afraid of water in those movies
Spoiler alert Jason there a reason why there seems to be two different Jason one is more like a mutant than the other is like a zombie you'll get an answer in Jason goes to hell. There is a item in the film that reference another franchise which explains Jason and his mother background little more in which the other previous movie never go into detail about.
I forgot to mention that the fact that the youth organization of Freemasonry is named DeMolay International after Jacques de Molay is probably the most concrete and public connection between it and the Templars.
@@A1NYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot lol In response to your first comment then, I guess Friday The 13th Part 3 has nothing to do with Jason Voorhees, since he's not mentioned by name in it beyond the archival footage from Part 2.
@@backforblood3421 Well my friends and I watched the whole franchise and in the Friday the 13th part 3 movie no one knew who Jason was anyway that's why it wasn't mentioned because nobody but two people in PT 2 well actually three if you include the guy at the bar who didn't go back but every other goddamm person was killed in that massacre and Jenny was in shock so she couldn't tell them anything because she was incoherent and these are different people who have no knowledge of Jason and what happened at Crystal Lake they're college kids and probably didn't live close to where those murders happened just like with Friday the 13th the final chapter no one knew who Jason was except the guy who was hunting Jason because he believed he was responsible for her disappearance and Tommy Jarvis knew everyone else didn't have a clue that's how it went down
Big flaw in the movie Jason isn't scared of water . In the movies he is in water all the time And Freddy isn't really scared of fire he's already burned lol
You are correct. Freddy exploits his victims fears and then tortures and kill. He dug deep into Jason's thoughts and then his subconsious. He saw a constant killing machine that always thinks of nonstop killing. Deeper is when he saw the drowning. What Freddy didn't realize is the drowning makes Jason angry. He actually wakes up in a rage causing the van to flip.
The main problem with any VS movie is... almost always there is a third element of regular human people. If the VS movie even declares a winner, the humans almost always have to be the winners in the end. You'll notice in the end there isn't really a winner because you can clearly see Freddy is still a thing with the wink. In a versus movie I want a literal fight between the two things, and I want humans to just be human fodder. To this day, of the few VS films I've actually watched, I've only really seen them do it once. In the end the humans didn't necessarily win anything, and they were killed left and right during. I really liked that movie, but many people despise it. I won't give the name in fear you haven't seen it yet.
This movie is so good imo. The only thing I didn’t like was Kia’s whole turn around at the end. Every time I watch this movie I like her character but as soon as she starts calling Freddy homophobic slurs it took me out & made me hate her as a character which is sad cause she was probably the best character until that change where she became a garbage person. But I love everything else about this movie. This is how you do a good crossover
…oh damn. Truth.

Well she thinks that Robert England isn't doing all his stunts but I found out he is definitely doing at least half of the stunts for sure .
After the first movie, there's really no reason as to why he wouldn't go back to killing kids.
Jason series is super interesting, he goes from being a regular guy to being a supernatural being who can regenerate. Really Jason just wants kids to get off his lawn.
lol I love that description
@@jtrillguzman9641 My mistake, it was closer to 15 years. He 1st played the role in Part VII in 1988 to Jason X in 2001, 13 years.
I don't understand isn't Kane Hodder like 250 pounds why would he not be big enough for the part

All monsters have a tragic origin though
@@wolfpredator1000 Not really, Freddy for example was a monster his whole life, when looking at villains in general Sauron, Sidious, and other notable villains were always villains with no real backstory that made them evil to begin with since they always were. The complex villains like Vader or Scar from the lion king were made into villains due to others.
The backstory of this movie is super interesting, if only to learn all the different types of insanely wacky scripts that were submitted before it was pulled from development hell.

20 years...geeez - I saw this movie in cinemas a few weeks before graduating High School. Now I feel super old!!!
You said it perfectly 👏🏼
What's kinda cool but funny is that they're trying to bring the Slasher genre back to life with Winnie The Pooh: Blood & Honey, and Mickey's Mouse Trap
This is self-aware schlock when executed well. It knew exactly what it was, and it “winked” at the audience (at the end, literally 😉). 😂
A big difference between Jason and Freddy is that Jason kills *clinically*.
Freddy won the fights but lost the war Jason doesn't get tired and he's unkillable
Smart
Bob Shaye loves his cameos. And the teacher in 1 is his sister, Lin Shaye
Freddy vs Jason vs Ash was going to be developed after this movie, but sadly it was cancelled due to creative differences between the studio and Bruce Campbell. Would be a huge treat if we get to see a horror hero fight against the two evil slashers icon. 😔

I’m sure other comments said so but Jason is not afraid of water.
Jason Lives was my favorite version.
I think I may need to check this show out

@Scared Pale I think you should watch Jason Goes To Hell - The Final Friday, as it leads into Freddie vs Jason, kind of a pity you didn't watch it first. I know you're not keen on the typical Friday the 13th formula but "Jason Goes To Hell" is very different, to the point where it pi**es off some fans!
Ooh interesting I think there’s a few Friday the 13th movies I’ll check out
Sidney, I highly recommend rewatching the original Friday the 13th (1980).
Yeah saw Friday the 13th for the first time last Halloween and had a blast! Kevin Bacon!!! The ending was wild I loved it 🎃
@8:45 Freddy wasn't in the hell in the first Elm movie.
I really like these two villains. Such awesome and scary slashers. I like Jason the most of the two though
If you count Freddy vs Jason the next movie will be part 13.
they’ll never leave this franchise dead permanently. the next one after the 13th will probably be a another reboot if anything.

That would have been so fun to see opening weekend!!!!
This movie has one of the best split in half kills ever. Looks so good haha
Blake's dad is the security guard from HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION
No they actually talked about it in the first and second movie
@@A1NYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot No they didn't. Please quote dialogue.
The “chhh chhh ahh ahh” is Jason saying “hunt hunt, kill kill” i used to watch this movie every day when I was a kid, my sister used to do the whispers to scare me 🤣
Oh no way! I never knew that
This is untrue as it is looped from his mom saying in the first one kill kill mama they took the ki from kill and ma from mama and looped it. Kiki mama
Regarding the "look" of Jason. If you go back to the Friday the 13th game, how there are various versions of Jason from the series of movies. So I won't consider this spoilers to the movies... (I won't spoil any specifics to the movies, just info you would know from the game)
Friday 1 was mommy of course.
When I hear " I'm ok I'm alright" followed by "not strong enough yet" I involuntary convulse in embarrassment.
Lolol
One thing about the Nightmare on Elm Street remake that gets criticized very heavily is that the pedo vibes are very much front and center, but like you mentioned in this video, that's always been an aspect of Freddy
A new upload from you marks a good score of any day!
I was super hyped for this movie when it came out. Can't say I was too pleased :) I expected something insanely grandiose. But it's fun watch regardless, even if only for a single time :)
I get the no interest in Friday the 13th as a series but I would suggest checking out some random ones yourself. Part 4 and 6 are both really fun movies
A few people have mentioned Part 6 in the comments!! So I’ll have to check that out!
I absolutely love your channel. This is a epic movie. You did a phenomenal job. Keep up the great work!🥰👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you!!
This isn't Robert last time as Freddy , he returns in makeup in the TV series The Goldbergs
To answer your question yes, the stuntman WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio did have to wear the makeup while doing the fight scenes.
the girl wearing the hat was a deliberate homage to the girl from carrie
Everyone is recommending part 6 so I think I’ll have to give it a go!
Great question
My favorite and only Friday The 13th movie is Part 7 New Blood 💯🥰🥰 Definitely good!!
Oh ... the police guy that's helping teenagers is that "small pp" guy from Scream.
Love the commentary! ❤. My parents let me watch Nightmare on elm Street because it didn't have nudity. I couldn't watch the Jason movies. Halloween movies were too boring for me. I think that's why I became a Freddy fan and still am to this day.
I just love your voice 💕. I can listen to that all day. Keep it up nobody will probably see this but that is completely great for me, thanks. 👍
I think this is most like part 6 Jason. I love the Westin Hills connection.
I’ve seen all the Chucky movies but am dying to watch the series!!!!! Jennifer Tilly and Brad Dourif are icons!!!
Dammm ...girl I miss You si much, great react and análisis. Keep the good work.
Oh wow! See, me not knowing the Jason lore, I had no idea!!! Wow that is a huge misstep
he didn’t write the script. it was two american men who were fans of both franchises. they intentionally added the water thing so freddy would be able to use something against him in the dream world.
I really enjoyed your review on the series..good stuff... Made my work day fly right by..thank u..
Thanks so much!!
I feel the same way decades later. I feel like there should be more. I can seee why it went on for longer than it probably should have.
Really dating myself here, this was the first R Rated movie I was allowed to see with friends.
I was 13 when this movie came out, i liked it a lot, seeing it again many years later the perception has changed a little but it remains a good movie. I can't wait to see the next video.
You liked it a lot?; that's it, now I'm gonna get Freddy Krueger to burst your fart 🤪
Id say in this movie, Jason's look is most similar to Friday the 13th 6 Jason Lives. Thats also a movie where he comes out of the grave in the beginning. So it's got a similar dirty vibe to him and rotting flesh.
The brother in the tub was actually the same actor that played the bully in A Christmas story
11:57 girl in green is Evangeline Lilly from Lost and Antman and the Wasp.
I’m sure someone else has probably recommended it, but I just wanted to make sure that someone has suggested that you watch “Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon”. I think it’s the best of the self-aware horror movies, and Robert Englund is in it, too.
Funnily enough no one has but a bunch of other horror TH-cam channels I watch have mentioned it before! I think this is a sign I need to watch it!
i love their fight at the end
The comics called Freddy Vs Jason Vs Ash are sequels to this movie and Jason kills Lori and Will and Lori says she actually felt sorry for Jason and what he went through both as a kid and against Freddy but she lost all sympathy for him cause he just doesn't stop killing. Freddy once again uses Jason to get the Necronomicon to gain unrivaled power in both the dream realm and the real world. Freddy uses his new power to take over the world and allowed Jason to lead his deadite army in a new and improved body but eventually Jason turns on Freddy.
Lori & Will was never killed how did you get that information
@A1lNYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot it happened in the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash comics
@@BSM-vw6cf Yeah but that's not canon for the movie storyline ok
@A1lNYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot I figured it wasn't but I think it's the only thing we see that continues their story beside a deleted scene of Will turning onto freddy and killing Lori at the end.
@@BSM-vw6cf Right absolutely right
The part about Jason being afraid of water makes no sense in this because here's an example. In Friday the 13th part 6 there is a scene in the movie we're Tommy Jarvis is in a boat trying to get Jason to go after him and Jason had no problem going after Tommy going in and underneath the water / lake
Also when it comes Jason's mom. Originally the plan was to have Betsy Palmer the same actress that played Mrs. Voorhees in the first Friday the 13th to reprise the role. She ended up turning it down after reading the script and also the money they offered her was not alot. Compared to the amount they originally offered her.
Yeah sounds like the water thing in this one is total made up B.S
@@ScaredPale The movie didn't really explain the water thing all that well. It's not that he's afraid of water, he's afraid of drowning. Like his original death. During the F13 movies, he's been in the lake plenty of times with no trouble but the times where he has zero control, he panics.
@@Seelebobwhat you mean the movie didn’t explain it there’s literally a scene in this movie where we see Jason as a kid get thrown in the water and we see him drowning struggling
18:38 there’s also some explaining throughout this specific scene
Yes I agree, pulling Nancy in somehow would have been epic
YOU HAVE UNFORTUNATE ASSUNPTIONS ABOUT FRDAY THE 13TH, SPRINGWOOD SLASHER CAME UP MORE IN THE FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES SERIES
Seriously disturbing finale 😂
If you're not tackling Friday next, what were you thinking of covering next? Any franchises?
I’ll probably do Evil Dead 3 next to finish off that trilogy and then a few one off films :)
How are you with Final Destination?
Haha I do get that comment on TH-cam a lot, not in real life funnily. Maybe once. Welcome to the channel!
Boobs n' blood. That's literally Friday the 13th in a nutshell.
This movie was the only one where Jason afraid of water, this movie did not follow the Jason story from the Friday the 13th , movies, he was never afraid of water in those movies
6:07 but sound of jason is because he´s coming to elm street, the shadow shows
Spoiler alert Jason there a reason why there seems to be two different Jason one is more like a mutant than the other is like a zombie you'll get an answer in Jason goes to hell. There is a item in the film that reference another franchise which explains Jason and his mother background little more in which the other previous movie never go into detail about.
Now look up the comic mini series Freddy vs Jason vs Ash which picks up a few years after the movie.
The s for u we’re looking for is lochlyn Monroe. He is also in scary movie and many more
I forgot to mention that the fact that the youth organization of Freemasonry is named DeMolay International after Jacques de Molay is probably the most concrete and public connection between it and the Templars.
There's no mention of free masonry in the movie no at all

@@backforblood3421Ok that's not funny I'm a grown woman lol
@@A1NYCBKLYNGIRL-tc5ot lol In response to your first comment then, I guess Friday The 13th Part 3 has nothing to do with Jason Voorhees, since he's not mentioned by name in it beyond the archival footage from Part 2.
@@backforblood3421 Well my friends and I watched the whole franchise and in the Friday the 13th part 3 movie no one knew who Jason was anyway that's why it wasn't mentioned because nobody but two people in PT 2 well actually three if you include the guy at the bar who didn't go back but every other goddamm person was killed in that massacre and Jenny was in shock so she couldn't tell them anything because she was incoherent and these are different people who have no knowledge of Jason and what happened at Crystal Lake they're college kids and probably didn't live close to where those murders happened just like with Friday the 13th the final chapter no one knew who Jason was except the guy who was hunting Jason because he believed he was responsible for her disappearance and Tommy Jarvis knew everyone else didn't have a clue that's how it went down
Freddy was set on fire by the parents if elm street way back when, that's why he's scared of fire.
Big flaw in the movie Jason isn't scared of water . In the movies he is in water all the time
And
Freddy isn't really scared of fire he's already burned lol
You are correct. Freddy exploits his victims fears and then tortures and kill. He dug deep into Jason's thoughts and then his subconsious. He saw a constant killing machine that always thinks of nonstop killing. Deeper is when he saw the drowning. What Freddy didn't realize is the drowning makes Jason angry. He actually wakes up in a rage causing the van to flip.
I’m so glad you did this film.. your reactions are priceless 😊
Awesome reaction! Made my miserable morning better! 🤘
