I love Spitz's lead playing. He had such a distinctive sound and technique. Specifically, I love his phrasing on Hy Pro Glo.

Early anthrax ( upto state of euphoria ) both guitarist used marshall heads and cabs , the last marshall Scott Ian toured with was a jcm 800 , after that he switched to Randall ,after playing through dimes rig he switched .

surprised nobody mentions the stereo detuning effect, that everyone was doing in the 80's just 5 cents sharp right and 5 cents flat left does wonders.
Yep. I mentioned the tape effect Kramer used to get a tape style chorus but didn't know if this was what they used. I think he was the first to do stereo ADT after the Beatles did it in mono. I would love to know how they got Kirk Hammets solo sound on Kill Em All. I suspect that is detuned too.

I always loved their tone. I was eating lunch at Sweetwater a couple years ago and bumped into Scott Ian there. Chatted with him a few minutes and got a couple pictures with him. Awesome guy! He was very generous with his time even though he was there on business, so obviously very busy. Anthrax was doing a recording master class. It was an amazing moment! I've been a fan of Scott's since I was a young kid growing up in the late 80's and 90's.
All the best to you too man. I'd love to meet him. Huge influence on my right hand.

Big, big fan of Anthrax. I maintain that they had the best guitar tones (in the 80's at least) when compared to the other Big Four members. Serious riffage on Among the Living and State of Euphoria!

IDk, they were very good, but going up against the likes of Dave Mustaine, Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman is a toss up. Plus Kirk and James had a sick sound on Master of Puppets. I love all these guys, they are very good, but my personal favorite is probably Gary Holt of Exodus, dude is a monster, and Ill always argue Exodus and Overkill should get more mention along with the Big 4, probably should throw Testament in and just call it the big 7. If I had to pick a favorite Joey era Anthrax album it would be Persistence of Time, and for the Bush era We've Come for You All, that album is kick ass from start to finish, plus we get some extra Dime riffs, you can never go wrong there.

@@STR8L8CED Likely my second favorite Anthrax album, behind We've Come for You All. A lot of punk influence on Spreading the Disease. Plus I love Stephen King books, and The Gunslinger has always been my favorite Anthrax song and King character.
Met Dan Spitz once. My band opened up for Anthrax on the Among the Living Tour. He came down to our dressing room and introduced himself. Super nice guy.

I went to see Anthrax at O2 Brixton Academy recently. Their music was part of my life in 80s. That info about Charlie written most riffs was in this week's Loudwire ......I finished recording Anthrax style guitar and I think the sound is mostly from the style of playing, then mixing and layering guitars in the track.
Band House!!!! NAOOOW! Dan Spitz timepieces are gorgeous.
I saw them for the second time in 1987 at the Royal Court in Liverpool with Testament. It was the night that they got a load of their custom Jackson guitars nicked from the tour bus. A few years later we found out that the bin bags of t-shirts that had been lifted were dumped in an area of the city and a bin crew found them and were wearing them to work for years later. Embarrassing for the city like, but it didn't really top the chaos of the recent Beastie Boys gig.
For the time, I don't think anything can beat the opening chord of Caught In A Mosh and the palm mutes/bass run that follow. You've got to have a pretty bright tone to hear the picking songs like that.

I found the No Drugs Jackson in a backstreet shop in Wigan a few years later, they wanted £750, I reported it to the police, as far as I know the only thing that was recovered

The SPX90 has been used on most major records produced since its inception. Especially on bass. Great video. Kudos to Charlie Benante killing it on the road with the Pantera Tribute!!

Late 80's Anthrax & Exodus both had killer tones.
First Anthrax show was on the official Headbangers Ball Tour in 1988. Was just a wee lad. 🤘
Dan was easily the best lead player of the big 4 back on those 80’s records. Obviously Chris Poland did some great stuff but Dan took the cake for me.
Yep when I got older I appreciated the depth of Poland but at the time it was all going on Dan was the man I was fanboying over.
If you watch any of the worship music making of videos, you can see Charlie using the click tracks, but he has Scott there with him tracking guitar live. I think this is the best of both worlds. You can have the visual cues of the live tracking, and the precision of the click.

Charlie is such an underrated musician. Great vid, nice to see more for the studio :) Going on the vanilla sausage analogy, I tried an EMG setup into my Peavey and.......I don't like it. It's the set-up of my childhood and it's just so underwhelming, guess it's more of a producer's tool. Got a Duncan Custom that is VAAASTLY prefer, overtones be damned.

Charlie Benante wrote the riffs, no shit! I did know that Dan had become a very talented watchmaker, I wondered as to his whereabouts a while ago and came across his website. Fucking amazing. You got the sound pretty close Owen, not an easy one to replicate.

Many people set the click too fast. Set it up for quarter notes so it click once for x4 16th or once for x6 sextuplets. Then you retain the feel and give the recording space Also, set the click a little slower than you think because everything sounds faster when all the instruments are laid down.

Amazing breakdown of one of the most amazing tones of the 80's. If you're still taking requests, it would be nice to see how Malevolent Creation got their tone for Retribution or how Suffocation nailed the tone for Effigy of the Forgotten.
I know the Malevolent guys - they used Marshall JCM800s and Mesa Dual Recs w/ Boss Metal Zone pedals for Retribution for that brutal (and somewhat excessive) scooped out distortion.. 🤘🤘

@@karrazaki89 metal zone to boost the front end of the heads - half the gain was from the metal zone and half from the heads - that’s how they got that searing distortion.
I have seen pictures of Charlie’s Guitar, it’s a black Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion model, the LP Custom of Jazz Guitars.
I heard an interesting thing back in the 90s, Scott Ian preferred using EV speakers in his cabs. That may have been a thing later on, after Among the Living, but I'm pretty sure he always claimed they were "better" because they were full-range HiFi speakers rather than guitar speakers. I think I got that from a guitar magazine (probably Guitar Player mag) when they started covering the big four.
How about you do Deicide's Legion guitar tone. That album had a pretty killer tone. the debut was just Morrisound 101, but the guitars on Legion had something unique about them.

Dan was rocking a monster rack of Mesa MarkIII's and mesa power amps for the live tone back in the day.
Yep he went mkiii after the studio fire took out his other amps.

Something about Jacksons makes them the most metal sounding guitar.
A buddy of mine worked on one of their late 90s albums and he told me that Charlie likes to use an old piece of gear called a rushing/dragging meter, or something like that. I'm sorry I dont remember exactly what it's called. But essentially it works kinda the same way a tuner works. The light meter starts to go one way if you rush and the other way if you drag. He said he would just keep his eyes on that thing and try to keep it within a certain percent.

Are you sure about Dan using 81's? I vaguely remember him talking about preferring the very early 58's in his guitars to newer Emg's in some old guitar mag interview.
Danny was the best of the big four. All over for him. Very underrated guitarist.
Anthrax's palm mutes made me want to play guitar. I'm still at it 33 years later.

For me the Spreading ... era is the best. Among the living is a bit too clean sounding for me. I think Ian used jcm800 super leads(maybe 50w in the studio?) with a TC electronic booster and he has a killer sounding Rhoads (the exception for Jackson imho). That guitar(the "NOT" Rhoads) has a full maple body as far as i remember from an old interview. There is some old video recording from a tour they did with Agent Steel and Overkill in the mid 80's where he has that "older" Anthrax sound.

Definitely would love to hear Type O Negative! For Bloody Kisses Kenny Hickey said he used an A/DA MP-1. Not sure if it was modded though, you can definitely hear the chorus on Frozen from that unit. Now October Rust, that would be a little harder.

A Skeleton In the Closet. That shit rips. Have you done a Deftones video? Like the Around The Fur/ White Pony era where Stephan Carpenter used a JMP1 and 8200 poweramp with stock Marshall cabinets? JB for the ATF and EMG 81 for WP. Plus Stephan has said in an Ernie Ball video that Anthrax was his favorite thrash band and that is what I thought of now. Carpenter still uses his JMP1 on the newer records still.

Probably one of the biggest parts of the rhythm tone was Scott Ian's picking hand technique. I have heard him say in an interview how his fingernails get ate up. That means he is digging in deep.

the "click track" is most definitely not like 100% to the grid even if there are back then (there's UREI 964 hardware but you get the idea).
Speaking of the tone, i thought it was more like G12-65 or G12T-75 but nice to know it really is the G12-80, i wonder if Classic Lead can nail it tho.

@@CIRCLEOFTONE they actually used producer's Ross Robinson's JCM 800 and there as a big muff and a ts9 involved I think. They switched to Mesa Rectifiers after that record.

From a producer/mixing engineer perspective I can tell that most of the "tone" on an album comes from how guitars are mixed. Of course the initial tone when recording is important, but the mixing stage can make or break that tone.
Set up a band room and invite the three of them to come over and jam.

Nope Dan used 2 Mesa Boogie Mark 3 heads. I saw them on the ATL tour. The Mark 3s had blue indicator lights while the prior Mark versions had orange lights.
Yep he used dozens of different amps over the years live. The mkIIc+, Mk III, Metropolis Plexi etc. But the one he modded in the studio was the earlier version.

I have been a fan of anthrax since the begining , I hated the early stuff they did with John bush during the 90s , the only bush stuff I liked was music of mass destruction and we've come for you all , my favourite albums are as follows
1st for all kings .
2nd among the living .
3rd spreading the disease.
4th worship music .
5th state of euphoria.
6th persistence of time.
7th attack of the killer bs .
8th fist full of metal .
As a drummer of 35 years I totally agree with Charlie , clicks sterilise metal just as triggers sterilise the sound of most metal they are used on ( I'm not hating on triggers , in extremely fast metal I think triggers have a place , particularly the bass drums )
However hearing acoustic drums getting hit hard in thrash and death metal music is beautiful , I think modern drummers don't know how to hit hard enough , back in the day you used to use wooden beaters ,click Pads on the bass drums , and good heavy 2b or 5b sticks , back in the late 80s and early 90s us drummers had to learn to hit harder than ever because when we did tiny pub gigs half the time there was no p.a for the drums ,so if you didn't hit hard you weren't heard .

The gold was not released back then. He may have used them since. I have one. Good bright speaker.
