Excepts from the Fairy Queen was the fist LP I ever bought, a ten incher.. Conducted by Daniel Pinkham. Way back in 1949. My piano teacher, who tried to convince me that practically all great music had been composed by Germans and Austrians, was appalled. I paid no heed to what she said. I hung on to that record until the grooves got so deep that the needle wouldn't stay in them.

Thanks to the uploader, not merely for the upload, and for showing the list of movements in the description, but most especially for taking the time to add the start time to each of the movements.
That must have taken a lot of time.
    Thanks very much!

When I fell in love with Gilbert and Sullivan in the late Seventies, I decided I needed to find more opera in English. The first one I found was Purcell's "Fairy Queen". My first time listening to it, I thought, "What IS this strange stuff?" But I kept on listening, and began to think, "Hey, this is really good!"
I have gone on to become an all-around opera fanatic, and I still love Purcell. I'm hoping to see Seattle Opera do "Dido and Aeneas" someday. English Baroque opera is something of an acquired taste, but I have definitely acquired it. (And yes, I still love G&S, too.)

I wanted to go see "the marraige of figaro" at McCaw hall, but irrationally they insisted you wear masks even though the mask mandates were lifted all over the entire country. I don't wish to go and watch something that lasts for hours with a mask on. I often wonder how would they possibly police this? During an important part, what are they going to have some usher walk through the seats and whisper in your ear "Sir, you need to put you mask above your nose"? ridiculous but hey it's woke Seattle were talking about here. I even emailed them and asked why? they just said "this is our policy" so I emailed them back and told them you are just being stubborn.

IMO G & S is the most unnecessary music in all creation, but I absolutely *love* Henry Purcell. With the acknowledgement that if I was a citizen of 1600s England I might have applied the same epithet to Purcell's' music. Good post! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • @janach1305

@@cimbalok2972 G&S is not just music. It is a synergistic combination of music, lyrics, and theatre. I don’t claim Sullivan was a great composer or Gilbert was a great dramatist, but together they were truly great.

Gardiner & the Soloists here give us a wonderful interpretation: bawdy, fey, sprightly wit, to capture Purcell's fun with the eros-sensibility of his day. Again, one of those things so easy to do badly, here with superior musicianship & articulate strength in the voices, done superbly. The painting (thanks to info. by Y.), in this case, gives an appropriate illustration of the music, though centuries later - in a sense, Sir Joseph shows very complete & serious visual technique, yet the taste of his era almost trivializes the mythic power of the tale (comedy is deeply serious in its creation of our pleasure in laughter, not so?). More credit to this great music. Thanks to all.

A few comments from a very experienced classical and baroque music listener: In principle, you make a good channel, but you are presumptuous several times. Using the name Henry Purcell is one thing; then naming something the best in this intrusive way is just as unpleasant. The reference to halloffame/classicfm is completely pointless, with all your love for H. P. It is comparable to the German classical radio, which presents even the lightest thing in a disgustingly sweetened way. Most lovers of classical and baroque music prefer to listen to Vivaldi, Handel etc.
Most don't even know the name Purcell, let alone listen to this wonderful music. It is simply too good and fine. Only tasteful people let these marvels come close to them. See the number of your subscribers.
But, despite everything, I think this performance is one of the best. But there are small cuts and disturbances.
You give a lot of information, but i miss the names of the singer.
Finally, if you're using Purcell's name, I would have expected some more uploads, respectively the whole work. Some others have more to offer.
In friendship and love, a big Purcell fan
