      A down vote gives the same exact positive impact to the channel as an up vote does. All it does is show interaction. Unless ofc you get a majority of down votes which isn't ever going to be an issue.

    Another great episode. You do a great job putting them together. It’s nice when you let us sail along with you and enjoy the beauty of the sunset and rolling waves.
    Good day two you both...

    You kids have such a casual way about your inter-island travels, like it's nothing to just sail overnight to the next port. You are very well suited for the lifestyle and you seem to enjoy each other's company too! I sure hope Georgie's hosts take as good care of her as you kids do.

    Thank you for putting the Azores on the cruiser map!

    Nice video, no boring music, nice talks.
    Being born in the Azores, it makes sense that I fell in love with sailing from the tender age of 8 years old.
    I still sail now and then but not full time... yet!
    Funny enough, the Azoreans that own yachts locally (my brother has an yacht in Terceira), do not sail them in winter, they stay off the sea from late October to early May, for the weather there can be rough in a gipsy.
    We mostly celebrate Christmas by drinking and eating a lot in December!
    You chose to sail in December, awesome!
    Safe travels!

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. It was typically the Brits, French or Americans out and about during Nov-Dec. The port captain in Ponta Delgada did give us a strange look when we asked for clearance to sail back to Terceria.

    This is what cruising is. Weather windows, sea conditions and deciding when to move is an everyday part of the cruising lifestyle. We, my wife and I started cruising a long time ago and at first we only thought about the fun stuff. It didn't take long to realize that there is a lot of stuff!! We learned early on that sailboats have diesel engines for reasons other than moving about the marina. Actually, I think we motored more than we sailed as the wind never seemed to be where it needed to be. BTW, we never figured out what it was that we did to aggravate the wind god but it was something I'm sure? We really enjoy watching your videos because it takes us back to our cruising days. Age and health have us now and we are boatless and landlocked. But, it is what it is and it is a part of life. Continue cruising, be safe and enjoy it.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're 100% right. Until you've been out there for awhile, it's hard to imagine how often you do need to motor to make it to the next port in daylight, avoid weather, beat the current, or just make those extra few degrees to windward. It reminds me of all the stories we hear from cruisers that have towed the engineless Padrys into harbors around the world.

    A couple of heavy pieces of mooring rope tied from boat to a pair 20 foot lengths of 3,8th chain, it helps stop destroying your mooring Lines and also never wears through on the dock stops the surges as well ,wrapped round what ever your tying up to Big Ballard etc ,then oversized shackle to attach chain back to itself on the dock, it saved me in a Harbour in Scotland from pretty bad surge in a storm , i was literally running out of dock Lines good luck guys ,should have said the to 20s making up as well a 40 foot heavy chain for a kedge anchor .

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We got yelled at for using our chain against their cleats. I can see how they would burr the cleats and cause issues for future boats, but man are they nasty even now. We have purchased new chafe gear and hope to be bale to fix those issues.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is! The plan had been to spend this past winter in the UK as we make our way north, but opted to winter in the Azores instead. This spring we'll continue to go north (via Ireland or England) and then spend our summer in Norway. 😀

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We we're lucky sailing out of Muskegon, we could sail on Muskegon lake, or jump to Lake Michigan if we needed more or less wind. It also gave us some protection for late season sailing. We'd typically launch the boat as soon as our mooring was installed in the spring. We needed to be able to justify boat ownership with as many sailing days as possible :)

    We are long time boaters of Lake Michigan too. We were power boaters and now searching for our new sailing home! Brand new at the sailing thing but so excited! Love to watch your adventures. Where would you say is a must destination for us? Probably leave from Florida.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't mind some unsolicited advice....Don't rule out buying your boat back home in Michigan. We often say how thankful we are that we brought our first cruising boat down the East Coast instead of buying it in Florida. Being Great Lake sailors previously, taking our boat down ourselves gave us such a great education on ocean sailing.... Each days travel was a baby step, and gave us the chance to learn the boat better while still coastal and with repair facility/ parts available to fix the inevitable issues along the way.
      We've seen a lot of cruisers dreams crushed when their first real experience is jumping from Florida to the Bahamas unprepared in both mind and boat. So, if you do buy in Florida, a few good shakedown cruises along the coast is highly recommend.
      Also, there really is a difference in a Great Lakes boat vs one that lived its life in the tropics.
      Enjoy the lifestyle change!

    your raingear reminds me of two people who i saw with a backpack like you us. over in port washington a couple of months ago walking towards the pier. as soon as i saw em i was thinking they must be returning after getting provisions. back before i got interested in boats i would of just thought what an odd spot to be walking in the rain.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our first young cruiser friends we're found in Cape May New Jersey while walking into town to provision. Thankfully, they stopped us on our walk and invited us over to their boat for drinks without even asking if we were cruisers too.
      Over the years of cruising you learn the skills of how to pick out cruisers from Joe Public.... Subtle details like oversized backpack, stubbornly wearing flip flops in all conditions, that all ways present windswept look; or really, the only people actually walking in an area with high driver ratios. It's proven to be a good thing to know.

    Hey guys! We're also planning to sail across the pond someday, so we're very curious about dealing with Schengen Zone issues and EU VAT tax on "importation" of vessels. Reading Noonsite, we're wondering if you have considered if a "resident visa" might affect you guys vis a vis the EU VAT tax on your boat? We'd love to hear more about this subject matter! From Noonsite: "Non-EU vessels which are intended for re-export may be temporarily brought into and used for private purposes in the EU, or more strictly in the "Customs territory of the Community", (which includes our territorial waters), without Customs duties or Value Added Tax (VAT) needing to be paid. But this can only be done by persons who are not EU residents - in official terms - by people who are "established outside that territory". This facility is thus NOT available to EU residents whatever their nationality." www.noonsite.com/General/EuropeanUnion

    It's unfortunate that you didn't have time to put subtitles/captions on all the parts that the windsock failed (or worked but muted your voices).
    Seems that the Azores jaunt has been the most fabulous of all your experiences. I think that it's the same for 'Erb & Maddie on SV Wisdom. Makes me really, really want to go!

      IKR? SAME. I had heard of the Azores, but had never known too much about them, had never even seen videos or pics I don't think from any of the islands or towns, so I had never in my life considered ever wanting to go there, but now I REALLY want to! Seems like such a Beautiful place =D :))

    If you use phone and gimbal at the same time you should disable stabilization on the phone so gimbal and phone doesn't have to fight each other.

      I think the issue is that Jess used the stabilization in Adobe Premiere to compensate which caused the warping issue. Right after this we bought an Osmo Pocket, so it should be better.

    er.. I left Washington state (grey, misty, rainy yuch, for San Antonio. Never went back. Your on a boat. You can go anywhere, why are you still chasing grey, misty, rainy, yuch? I can't boat, (health). I RV'd for 40 years (the sunbelt). Now I'm living precariously through couples like you on boats, I love what your doing and would if I could, but not in the cold!

      Unfortunately, I never acclimatized to the warmth of the Caribbean, and I spent the last 6 years overheating 90% of the time. Im currently loving the cool weather, but who knows how long it is before I'm searching for warmth again. We're commiting to one season North and will decide then if we want to stay any longer.
      Like an RV, the beauty is we can pick and choose our home's location

      @@mattjohnson6716 ; Well I was a scoutmaster in Wa St. and dug sno caves every winter for 11 years with the kids. We lived in WA for 45 years and when I had a chance to be warm I knew I was done with the cold, time will do that. I do miss the summers up there but the price is just to high. Summer in Texas is hell on earth, no doubt, but we don't have to stay here and we don't.

    Depressing. Must be the rain. You both need some mental stimulation. Perfect time to put the boat up and explore new adventure ideas and mediums. If you don’t like wind and waves maybe sailing isn’t the right medium for you. Consider a bicycling adventure across South America or Europe or maybe motor yachting down the Mississippi River or living on shore in the Azores and teaching drone flying.

      They were wintering there. They're staying in the northern hemisphere due to them wanting to sail to Norway and Ireland and they can't go there until the weather is better, so where would they have moved on To?? Besides, they fell in love with the Azores, better wintering There than back home in Michigan

      Correction as I remember something from their Instagram: the Boat was wintering there, I believe They were wintering in SE Asia (and Jess spent some time with family in Tahiti or something), so they Did move on :)
