    Really like the trim in the bedroom , that looks awesome. Went to visit with our son and his family, haven’t been able to go anywhere for over 6 years but we managed a halfway place for a few days and it was great seeing everyone again. Thanks for sharing with your family with us and glad your all safe. Fred. 🙏🏻🙏🏻👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👋👋

    Blocks are 16 lbs each

  • @takeahikeforlife
    @takeahikeforlife 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    FYI, the standard cinder block weighs 38 pounds. With all the items you listed so far (concrete and blocks), your pedestal is just over over 1,000 pounds. Add to that the weight of the gravel, the stone and the stove, and I can easily see the whole setup topping 2,000 pounds. That’s a lot of thermal ballast that will slowly release heat during the night when your fire goes out. Now I see why you beefed up the structure so much!

    It is cool to have a porch to work under when it is raining. I wonder how some Bluegrass will sound on that porch when it is done?

    It is exciting to see your visions for the cabin as they "come to life". The trim is definitely unique and looks great; can't wait to see the wood stove in place once the stone base is done, it's going to look just as great I'm sure. Hey to Jennifer and P1 and P2!! #SMO #SmokyMountainOutpost #Smoky #Dolly

    Ha Ha Ha! Who needs kids around when you've got those two! Amazing! That hearth will absorb tons of heat. I still think a wood fire is the best fire.

    Purely out of curiosity, If at a later date u r going to hold workshops and camping areas down on the bottom area of the property, why don't u move that little cabin down there as a rental, and to make it look more in theme with the rest of the property, cover it with the same sort of off cuts u r using for trim inside the cabin, that way u can use something u already have, instead of building, or even turn it into a meeting place for campers down there, along with a sort of small class room.

  • @Fredrik3626

    Hi Richard, I really enjoy watching the progress on your cabin. I’m curious are you going to air condition in a central mode or individual rooms if any at all? I know it’s hot in your next of the country so I know if I were to live there I would. Also, are you going to have a power house to provide daytime use and some sort of battery back up system? There are so many options to choose from I just wondered if you had a plan yet. I think you have made excellent choices so far and my last comment is whether or not you planned to seal the rock face? I think it would be a great look.
    Best Regards.

    Just wondering why you've placed a wire box directly behind the stove. You're gonna need heat resistant fixture for that and a heat shield would probably be a good idea as well.

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s for the fan on the back of the stove. The stove sets almost two feet from the back wall. It has plenty of room between.

    Richard can I ask why you’re putting concrete up in the chimney bend through the wall? I’ve never seen it done that way before as for me asking...looking great Richard top job...

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A lot of the old time folks would have a concrete box in the wall that the stove pipe passed through to keep chances of fire down

    • @keithandlindabaldrey7413
      @keithandlindabaldrey7413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My dad had that around his stove pipe in his greenhouse for just that reason.

      Hey Walter! Thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts. I hope I can shed a little light on the matter for you regarding ads. TH-cam pays $0 to anyone if ads are not placed in the video. If you view other channels that have less ads, it may be due to their personal choice to not include them, or google not placing them in the video. I certainly apologize if it’s bothersome or distracting, as that is not at all our intent for the end consumer at all. So for that, we are very sorry. However, Bc of the ads that are viewed (or skipped) is the only way we get paid from Google Adsense (TH-cam). The only other form of money that can be made would be from sponsorship or a paid ad that is personally made contractually with another company (i.e. Skillshare, that you may see us do once a month). My dad retired from his work, so the money that is made from here is gone to support him, his bills, and to also pay for the house build (tools, materials if needed etc…). The money also goes to buy new or better equipment to help provide better content for the end viewer (computer, editing software, hard drives for the footage, cameras, camera equipment etc…). So although it may be distracting or annoying… I am sorry and I apologize for the inconvenience that it causes you as the viewer. I hope this helps shed just a little more light on the subject of how we get paid and why we do what we do. Thanks again for tuning in Walter!

      I also want to clarify that with the newer things that TH-cam has put out.. like the paid services that you can pay for or any membership levels that a channel may offer or things like this… other than that it’s purely ads and sponsorships on how a channel makes their money.

    you putting all that weight on your subfloor and outer wall..... That is not how they built my fireplace and chimney. They cut the subfloor out for the hearth and cut the wall out for the brick, they used a chainsaw and framed the hole with 2x4s and had a mixer truck come in and pour a foundation just for the fireplace, hearth and chimney, 3 feet deep in the ground then a few days later came back after the initial pour had dried and stacked cinder block up to where the fire place hole was going to be and then placed fire brick all on top of the cinder block where the fire hole was, and for the the hearth, they just put a brick veneer over the exposed cinder block. I don't think I would trust that much weight on my floor and wall like that, and especially how all that weight will eventually settle differently than the rest of the house.

    • @SmokyMountainOutpost
      @SmokyMountainOutpost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The area for the stove was reinforced during the build of the floor. It’s supported by two 10in tree stumps on top of blocks that are laying on top of shale. I used joist brackets with screws and went behind that with a nail gun and it’s supported by 2x10 running horizontal at the ends connected to 7x10 in beams and angle iron joints. I am thinking it will do okay. But, thanks for the thought. I did something similar in my last house as you had done. I didn’t really see the need with this job.
