You know, I just had my tastes unexpectedly change over the past month, and your comment summarizes it perfectly. I saw a Tagima Stella DW for sale last week, and I decided to buy it... then today I found a Cort X700 Duality for sale, sub $600 and went for it. I'm a sucker for well made guitars and as much as I'd like to have an Ernie Ball JP Majesty, a Suhr, an ESP Horizon or Javier Reyes 6-string (can you tell I'm a sucker for the high horns?) I will never be able to justify spending that much on one guitar. Maybe on one amp, but not when my favorite guitar so far is a Peavey EXP I got for $400.

I sometimes get lucky at find a perfect guitar. I got an old Ibanez Jet King painted silver sparkle. When Ibanez first started they were really Guyatone guitars with Ibanez put on the headstock. It looks very, very 50's so most guys never tried it out. It has chrome PU covers that make it look like the original but under them are P90's. John Mitchell from the bands “It Bites, Arena, Frost*, Kino, A, The Urbane and Lonely Robot” primarily uses Cort Guitars - white and black G254s on stage, and for recording, a tobacco G210 and a blue/black G290. He also plays an Alvarez Yairi acoustic guitar in the studio, and a PRS Classic. Mitchell's rack set-up consists of a Marshall JMP1 Preamp with effects being produced by a vintage Korg A3 effects unit. This signal is then amplified by a Marshall Valvestate 80/80 power amp to a 4x12 Marshall cab. So if there good enough for John Mitchell there good enough for me.

Tip for those out there wanting floating Trems.
If your guitars springs are providing too much resistance for it to float, buy springs of lower quality and put them in the back instead. Voila! Floating trem. If you want to make it float better too, sometimes thicker strings like 10s provide higher resistance and help it float better, at the potential sacrifice of harder playing for newer players or those not used to playing with thicker strings

I'm starting to think that an HSS configuration strat might be the best of both worlds for guitars. Decent single coil warmth from the neck position, but sufficient beef from the bridge humbucker.
Cort do make great guitars. I've got a Mansons Guitar Matt Bellamy Signature and that's a lovely instrument made with Cort. The neck feels especially lovely.
The quality of the electronics are going to be reflected in the cost I'm sure. If you want a guitar at a that low price point, then compromises have to come somewhere, and the person that's in the market for that sort of guitar probably doesn't care too much about lower end electronics.

Recently bought a Cort G200DX-NAT through Guitar Center, brand new in a box. The neck joint had a 1.5 mm gap due to shavings and sawdust. Reluctantly took off the neck, cleaned out the pocket, lightly sanded for a better fit & fixed it. How it passed QC like that blows my mind. Anyway, it was under $300, so it's my hot-rod-able Stratocaster-style solid body guitar. Better pickups are planned for it. With a swamp ash body & hard maple neck, it's a beauty to look at & plays quite well.

I don’t know how much a surprise is it that possibly the biggest guitar maker in the world makes a good guitar under their own name. They have always had done nice models at varying prices. The only reason the are not a household name for guitarists is because they have dedicated their resources and time to making guitars for other brands. Just a few of the brands they make Ibanez, Fender/Squier (includes amps), G&L, Gretsch, Laguna, Avalon/Lowden, Music Man, Schecter, Lakland, Strandberg, EVH, Chapman and Jackson

I have initially replaced mini Alpha pots on my Cort CR250 with CTS pots but recently switched back. One of CTS pots became noisy/cracky and other one had different feel when rotating. I also found that the taper on Alpha pots ("B" for volume and "D" for tone) works better compared to single "audio" taper of CTS pots.

Agreed and small Alpha pots are good pots, way better than some large sized 'no brand' ones. Lets be honest all guitar manufacturers use 'cheap' pots, none of them are using £12 Allen Bradly pots or anything super crazy. CTS are bog standard pots, nothing more. Gibson have made them mythical but they are just pots. In an inexpensive guitar Alpha's should be really be seen as a bonus free upgrade.

Darrell, you've pointed out small pots in a number of videos now; but I haven't seen an explanation of why bigger pots are better. Is it a matter of finer resolution or less sensitivity? Appreciating the channel much. Thanks, Joe

    • @Barbarapape
      @Barbarapape 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Small pots only have very slim carbon tracks that wear out very quickly
and don't provide the same contact area and feel that you get with high
quality pots from CTS etc, they are cheap to make, but are no good for
      regular use.

I have just one guitar with big Alpha pots, and will swap them with small chinese ones. With all the small ones I never had a problem, no matter wich value or linear or log.
But the big Alpha pots do jump from 10 to 8 in volume just by turning to 9.5. The sudden volume drop almost to 6 happens the more the tone pot is engaged.
      Duno if it’s the wiring…
